This is a very cozy, beautiful, and modern-looking sushi/Japanese-Korean fusion restaurant. This BYOB offers a wide selection of sushi, sashimi, and colorful combo platters to choose from, as well as a good selection of appetizers and entrees. Though we didn't order any appetizers, I noticed that they had some items that I don't typically see at other restaurants, like okonomyiaki. The sushi is very tasty - maybe not Morimoto-quality, but for the much more affordable price tag, it is very good sushi. I tried the hamachi verde and naked tuna tartare. Both were very delicious, but I will need to go back to try some other signature rolls. Sometimes, i judge places by their choice of bathroom decor, and the bathroom in this place is simply gorgeous. After all, if a place can't keep a clean bathroom, then how can they keep a clean kitchen? The staff is friendly, and though the restaurant is small, there are several types of seating to choose from. While it wasn't busy when we came in, I would highly recommend reservations. Would give it a two but the servers were the nicest servers ever. I was hesitant when I walked in because everything was all white but that just sort of made things seemed dirty. And the chopstick were clear plastic so same deal, it was cool but it looked dirtier than it probably was. The menu was pretty long which is also concerning because its like quality over quality. Also, there were japanese and korean things on the menu. It didn't really say on anything what type of restaurant so I was confused why they didn't just have one cuisine but maybe the chef is part korean part japanese, I dont know. The tempora sampler was good, no complaints. I am not actually sure what I got, the people next to us got it and it looked good so I just pulled the trigger. the chicken breast was not super dry and the noodles were cooked well but I still didn't like it. I'd say more like 3.5 stars but there are some key dishes and the service is incredibly kind, so I'll round up to 4. My friend and I actually first tried Doma in 2012, but I still remember eating the naked salmon sushi. That's how amazing it was! It has crunchy rice topped with spicy salmon and jalapeño. So obviously we ordered it again and it was just as I remembered. Unfortunately the spicy tuna fell flat for me. It was more filler than tuna and as a result, kinda dry and flavorless. My friend got the eel cucumber avocado roll and it looked alright. I'd like to try the chirashi one day but I'd stick with things they're more popularly known for, like the naked sushi. I also got a dish from the specials, which was a salmon hot stone bibimbap. It was basically bibimbap topped with raw salmon and it was delicious. It comes with a gochujang sauce to mix in and the rice gets crunchy and delicious. It's a little pricy, but I'm always willing to pay a little more for a hot stone pot. Our server was incredibly sweet and the atmosphere is nice and clean. Overall, a bit pricy for what you get, but they offer a large variety of Japanese and Korean food. Good for dates! I wouldn't wish this on anyone and I'm so thankful we didn't give any to our toddler!! Beware of restaurants (especially sushi) that are slow and probably holding on to raw fish longer than they should. My doctor told me to call poison control, so that's our next step. read more

We tried to get a table at umai umai on a Saturday night 9pm but when we didn't get one, we went to doma. And I don't regret it one bit! Love the food here!! Order the steamed buns. They are simply delicious. I had one spicy pork and one bulgogi, and I am considering going back for lunch tomorrow to order them again. I also enjoyed seaweed salad, miso soup (could have been warmer temperature-wise), and the tartare trio. In the tartare trio, the yellowtail was my favorite of the three fishes (next time I will ask for extra jalapeño), and I added seaweed salad into the other two - tuna and salmon. Each fish is served with its own sauce, which was good and fun to try. Sometimes I get bored of sushi because I'm allergic to shellfish and can only have so many things on the menu. I appreciated the wait staff's attention to my allergy and their recommendations based on that. I got the triple double spicy tuna (tuna, spicy mayo, sriracha, tempura crunch, scallion, & seared albacore, shichimi pepper, sweet glaze on top) and the naked tuna (tuna tartare, avocado over deep fried sushi rice, topped tobiko and jalapeno slices on top). With a pretty expansive menu, my friend and I sipped on our BYO wine as we contemplated. Our waiter was pretty helpful in suggesting recommendations, which isn't always the case at sushi restaurants. As fans of Chinese scallion pancakes and Korean kimchi pancakes, we began our meal by adventuring into an okonomiyaki. We weren't quite sure what to expect of the Japanese seafood pancake. Once past the initial aroma of fish flakes, we dove into the fluffy pancake filled with bacon, calamari and mixed vegetables. Paired with a drizzle of sweet and savory okonomiyaki sauce and Japanese mayo, it had a perfect mix and melody of flavors. It was also quite filling since it was thicker than we expected. It was exciting to see this on the menu, along with some other authentic casual fare, such as takoyaki octopus balls, that is typically rare in Philadelphia. Also inspired by a mix of Asian cultures, the spicy pork steamed buns we got combined Chinese peking duck steamed buns with Korean bulgogi. The soft buns were stuffed with flavorful meat, pickled cucumbers, and scallions. A house sauce, similar to hoisin, was plated alongside for necessary dipping. Another enticing appetizer option that our neighbors got was the popular korean tacos with a choice of bulgogi, spicy pork or braised pork belly served with spicy slaw. While every Japanese restaurant has their wild, innovative sushi rolls, Doma sets itself apart by reinventing a lot of the basics. Even the Naked Salmon Roll is not a typical roll. Instead, it's spicy salmon tartare with avocado, masago and jalapeño slices laid over crispy, sticky rice crackers. The simple presentation with a twist was definitely compelling and a delicious, little snack bite. I would definitely come back to try other rolls. Between two people, the sushi deluxe platter was the perfect sampling of fresh raw bar options. With an assortment of 10 pieces of sushi and a classic spicy tuna roll, the overall quality was apparent. Among all the sushi competition in the city, Doma's ambiance and food stands out from the crowd. Doma is a great place to enjoy good sushi, and it's BYOB to boot. We had the miso soup and edamame to start which were leagues ahead of other spots I've tried. The miso here tastes fantastic and is packed with flavor which contrasts many of the one-dimensional tasting miso soups I've had at other Japanese restaurants. If you can't choose a particular roll, I'd highly recommend the t.y.s. roll combo. It's composed of a spicy tuna roll, a yellowtail scallion roll, and a salmon avocado roll. You can eat it with soy sauce or ask for some spicy mayo too. The host and waiting staff were exceptional and made sure that everything was perfect. Our host and servers were very attentive and always had a smile on their face. I am a huge fan of Doma's chirashi. Everything from the sashimi toppings to the vinegared rice is delicious and balanced in the right amount. I love this place! Menu has a good mix of Korean and Japanese dishes and everything I've tried has been delicious. I highly recommend the tuna nachos- we were wowed by this. The tacos and the okonomiyaki are also good choices for starters. The appetizer options are honestly all so appealing that my mistake the first time here was filling up on apps before the main dishes even arrived. They have a good selection of sushi rolls, the tuna club was unique and tasty to boot. Definitely leave room for dessert. We opted for the taiyaki and it was the perfect ending to the meal. The taiyaki was stuffed with red bean paste, the black sesame ice cream was topped with Rice Krispies, and the whipped cream on the side had super soft pillowy mochi. Easily the best beef dolsot bibimbap I've ever had. The miso soup was also topnotch. I can't speak on the sushi, but I fully intend on coming back here to give them a try. Service was great, though admittedly I was the only person in the restaurant for lunch. They kept my tea and water full so I'm a happy camper. Not every sushi restaurant asks if you want tea before you have to ask for it, so that was nice. I really can't say more other than that I left full and quite satisfied. Oh my, Doma. I've been hearing great things about you for years, and they are all true. The boyfriend and I made last minute New Years reservations because somebody (ok, me) forgot to book a place. They were closing at their normal 10pm and serving their regular menu. Because we were able to bring our own booze and not shell out for an overpriced prix fix menu, we decided to go all out and order A LOT of sushi, without being price conscious. I was a little underwhelmed with the house salad. Red delicious apples aren't crispy enough in my opinion to use in a salad. This however, is the only thing that was less than amazing. Everything was great, but the stand outs were spicy Agetofu, Spicy Scallop roll, Bibimbap roll and the Ooki Eel roll. The Agetofu was just spicy enough and perfectly fried. The Spicy Scallop was melt in your mouth amazing. The Bibimbap was the best of both worlds- sushi and bibimbap. The Ooki Eel....I can only say to try it and be immensely satisfied that you did. We were stuffed. But still we ordered desserts. Fried bananas and ice cream. You can't go wrong with that, but the real star at Doma is the sushi. I've spent the past 11 days fantasizing about Doma, and have tried twice to satisfy my cravings with other sushi. Needless to say, I have failed. I'll be back soon. read more

Can never go wrong at Doma!! I was introduced to this place couple years ago and it has been one of my favorite sushi place to go to without breaking my bank! This restaurant is pretty tiny so reservations are recommended when coming here at a busy night like Friday, Saturday. They do not have a parking lot but I never really had a issue of finding street parking here. I love their rolls more that their Sashimi and i am not a roll person at all. The Sashimi is pretty fresh but it does not taste as fresh to me (certain pieces) But the rolls are super yummy! Must try the tuna flat bread! But, for us, the place looked better than the food tasted. Cute and charming, small space, but done warmly, and well. Ordered agedashi tofu and 2 specialty rolls that averaged about $15 each. Believe the names were island and double spicy tuna roll. Rice not fluffy enough and the pieces were sliced unevenly. Overall taste was just average for the price charged. As well, agedashi tofu could have held much more flavor, and had a more delicate fry and fluffiness to the protein. Don't think we would come back for another visit, cuz we are here for a bit. This place is not your average typical sushi byob but 100 times better. The menu is extensive with a ton of yummy selections to pick from. My friend had tuna on a crispy bready yummy flat square. I had the Philly roll, which was cream cheese, avocado, and smoked salmon, with a red caviar on top. As you can see I am not an expert on the names of the food we had, because sushi is not my favorite. But this place made me love sushi... The thing I liked most about this place was that my friend did not see what she wanted on the menu, so she showed the waitress a picture of what she desired. Doma is a quick and easy place to pick up takeout. Ordered the bulgogi bento box with spicy tuna roll. For $19, it was a decent portion size. I was able to get 3 meals out of 1! The bulgogi was perfectly savory, didn't have any spice, but that can always be added. My only complaint, is the bento box did not come with any rice, which I feel should be an essential with the box. Overall, I'd come back to try more dishes! It's pretty small though so if you have a large party, it's going to be a tight squeeze. The edamame was the freshest bowl of soybeans I've ever had. I also had the pork buns, spicy tuna and spicy scallop rolls. MD and AC also ordered some rolls and the tuna sashimi special. The pork buns were a little lackluster- not very flavorful but overall satisfying. You know I love the swine. The fish was very fresh but I found the rice to be ever so slightly undercooked. There are so many menu options that it's really hard to choose. On a return trip to Philly I definitely plan on stopping in again. We were seated near the bar and saw this "tuna club" roll get plated and served and the rice was shaped like a club sandwich! This place most definetly surprised me, who knew this gem was hiding a hop, skip and jump away (literally) from sabrina's cafe. All I have to say is wow! From korean style tuna tar tar served with a quail egg, to the doma roll wrapped with thinly sliced cucumber instead of seaweed paper and no race, which was one of the coolest sushi rolls I've ever had, this roll alone is worth you visitng this hot sushi spot. Their rice was very good as well, not sweet at all, just solid sushi rice. The other rolls were very well excicuted, especially the chloe roll (I posted a pic of the rolls on their yelp page). The fish was also very fresh and tastey. Doma would easily have five stars if their prices were a little better, other than that an overall fantastic sushi spot. Oh, and if you're one of those super picky people who has to know exactly what they're eating -- they do this nifty thing where they have code letters; "i" for inside and "o" for outside, conveniently letting you know the ins and outs of each roll. Conventional sushi rolls pale in comparison to the signature rolls here.
