I love mexican food and there are plenty of places around LA... but the best part of Don Antonio's is their Dollar Taco Wednesdays. Although it can get really crazy because of the overwhelming amount of college students trying to catch this deal, you can make this experience a great time. You can ask for a crispy shell or a soft taco.. the best ones are the chicken and carne asada and surprisingly the potato one. What more can you ask for? Margaritas and tacos. The trick here is to get there early or have someone wait before the madness starts. Oddly enough, I have been coming here before the whole "Hills" feature of Speidi. We have seen them dining here without the camera... Heidi, Spencer, and Brody were sitting a table away from us. So that was quite interesting. read more

As lame as this sounds, I don't even like Mexican food, but I came here from watching the hills. I lOOOVE the hills, so when i went to LA for new years I had to try Don Antonios. The food portions were HUGE for that i'd give three stars since i can't quite rate ont he QUALITY but it looks like the place is pretty good for a nice mexican restaurant. Sadly, this place is losing its appeal real fast as of late due to TERRIBLE service. The 2 stars are for the food- it's decent and hasn't changed much over the years. It's consistently solid (if greasy as hell) Mexican (American) food. The lack of stars is for the increasingly terrible service at Don Antonio's. I've been coming to this restaurant for 20 years or more. But the past few times I've come to DA, the service has been poor...if not downright rude. Tonight my request for a booth for 2 was so challenging for the person seating me, you would have thought I was requesting a banquet table on Taco Weds. AND NO, I don't want to sit next to the bathroom. The guy made a grumble about it, did not seat us with silverware or menus, and went off abruptly. Looking around the restaurant all around me were couples in booths- but he was saving this one for a larger party?! (A party that never materialized and more and more space opened up all night.) But seating debacle aside, I tracked down menus, water, napkins myself....all without too much trouble, but the staff was oblivious and not the least bit attentive, clearly. The waiter never checked on us. The atmosphere is rushed and hectic which is so odd because nothing takes a long time - except we waited the whole meal for over priced gauc to arrive to the table. This has been what's consistent lately- negligent waiters, their rudeness and general feeling of 'hurry up' and get out. The friendly neighborhood feeling is gone. If you're not able to converse in Spanish, you get ignored, rushed, and of course made to feel like an asshole for requesting a booth on a slow Sunday night. Forget about a water refill. It's so frustrating when local standards that you've supported for over a decade turn into cold, classless factories forgetting that customer service truly wins the day. I came here on cinco de mayo and it was packed! Waited about 1 hr before being seated, and I was extremely hungry. I had the garlic shrimp, chili relleno, and a virgin mango Margarita. SO DELISH! I would consider it pretty authentic Mexican food. To top it off for dessert I had the xango, which was a banana/cheesecake wrapped in a churro like dough with vanilla ice cream. I am a huge lover of mexican food and there are two spots in LA that are my favorite and that I consider to be the best in town. Don Antonio's is one of them and I honestly don't think I have ever tasted such amazingly simple and delicious carne asada tacos and enchiladas. The food here is uncompromised - I get a very down-home, fresh out of my Abuelita's kitchen vibe and taste. My other number-one spot is more mexican-cuisine with a bit of a calmer atmosphere, (Conquistador in Silverlake) so I my business is toward whichever mood strikes me that day, or the people I am with. Also love the ambiance here - I wouldn't nessesarily say its the perfect date spot just because it is nearly ALWAYS busy and noisy, but very cute nonetheless. (I prefer the patio when I actually get the luxury of being able to choose) Dollar taco wednesday is fantastic, and word has gotten out around town. Expect at least an hour wait and show up early when hunger is only merely starting to strike. By the time you sit down, you'll be famished. Service is the only reason why I don't give Don Antonio's 5 stars. This place is always packed and waitstaff is rushing around constantly. Generally, when I eat out, I like to have a calm, relaxing dinner while taking my time and chatting with friends. Don't expect that here. You're not even barely finished with your plate when your waiter is already clearing the table and hussling you out. It has happened to me on SEVERAL occasions here that we won't see our waiter the entire meal, then before we're even finished he is breathing down our necks and shoving the bill at us. Be very clear with your waiter here about what you want. If you're still working, are going to want more of something, etc., because these people are the types that have a tendency to make the decisions for you. Service here is pushy and generally unfriendly - but the food is just so damn delicious that we bear it and communicate any dissatisfaction in our tipping. Recently visited Don Antonio's which I normally do not patronize on a regular basis; mainly for the reasons that I encountered again, our waiter gave us poor service (in fact the table in front of us also complained to the manager) the food was what I like to call "Gringo's delight" its 1 Star up from Acapulco's but definitely not a Paco's Tacos and what restaurant in LA doesn't give refills??? You can keep your $1 Taco nites; cuz that's the only way they can draw a crowd in. Tina L. had been raving about this place for a while now, and I was curious to see what the fuss was about. So we went there on a wednesday night, when they usually have $1.25 tacos. I've seen this so many times before, but it never seizes to amaze me how much people love a good deal. The place was packed and we had to wait for 15 mins. At this point in time, I thought the food must've been really good, judging by how popular the place was. We were seated out on the patio, on plastic chairs that didn't really fit with the rest of the decor. It seemed that they just opened up that space to meet the demand, without putting any thought into it. Whatever, I was still looking forward to try the food. We ordered 5 Tacos (2 chicken, 1 carne asada, 1 carnitas and 1 potato) and a carne asada quesadilla. Overall, the tacos were average at best, but I guess not a bad deal for $1.25 each, but at $9, the quesadilla should've been better. What ticked me off though is that although you get complimentary chips and salsa, they WILL charge you if you ask for another round. This is SoCal, there's plenty of better mexican food around. Talk about complete disappointment! Like many other people probably, we came here because some of my friends saw this restaurant featured on The Hills and wanted to try it. We called ahead to put ourselves on the waitlist and were seated within 10 minutes of arrival in the cave room. The room was pretty and nice enough, but that's about all that we enjoyed about that night. First off, we realized very quickly that the ventilation at this place was extremely poor. Someone had ordered a dish that came on a hot plate and it was smoking profusely. The smoke filled up the entire room and spewed over the the rest of the restaurant, and everyone there was coughing and gagging, trying to breathe. One of the other diners asked the waiter if he was trying to suffocate us, and honestly, I was thinking the same thing. There was no fan, air conditioning, or some kind of ventilation to clear out the smoke it seems. The room was literally a haze that it hurt to keep your eyes open and to breathe, even with your nose covered, was painful at best. Everyone in the room was coughing like crazy. When things cleared up enough, which took about 15 minutes, we ordered food. Not being very hungry, I just ordered the Xango - a dessert which is suppose to be a banana cream burrito fried and coated with a cinnamon sugar coating, topped with vanilla ice cream. Sounds good enough, right? Well, imagine my surprise when I got it and offered some to my friends, one of whom took a huge bite and practically had to spit it out because the entire thing was drenched in SALT. Yes, you read correctly - the cook had mistaken salt for sugar and coated my dessert with it. A classic mistake for the amateur cook, but this is a restaurant, not home. You shouldn't screw up like this. I told the waiter and he had more or less a look of disbelief - he had to take it back to the cook to verify (and I assume the only way to do it was to try it themselves to prove it, since he didn't seem to really believe me), and then come back later saying they'll make a new one. The waiter also just laughed it off - there was no apology. Um, sure it was a mistake, but I think at the very least it warranted an apology! My friends' dishes didn't seem much better. One got a chimichanga, and it was filled mostly with cheese instead of meat - she didn't eat much of it. Another got taquitos, and for some reason the meat filling couldn't stay in the shells, and got very messy to eat. Overall, this place was a disappointment. And towards the end of our meal, someone else in another room ordered that smoke-filled dished, and we left the restaurant coughing the entire way out. I figured most of the reviews on here focus on the tacos and the drinks -- we didn't have either. Perhaps being liquored up could have saved our night and made the experience funny instead of painful. read more

I just came here for the first time last weekend. I LOVE IT! The food was delish! My boyfriend and I got the "fajitas for 2" and they were the BEST fajitas I've ever had. The rice here is a fluffy phenomenon and the chips and salsa are as good as it gets. It can be super crowded so go on the "off times" and try to find street parking before you cave in to the valet. My boyfriend and I have been coming here for over a decade. This is the best Mexican food we have ever had. They are consistent, price is right, and food always delicious with a generous portion. Parking on street sometimes a challenge but they do have valet. Although everything on menu is great, I am a fan of the #12 (pork tamale and cheese enchilada with rice and beans). I have been to Don Antonio's often over the last 35 years; the restaurant is in our "lunch zone". Over the years, it has had its ups and downs, but it seems to be on a roll lately. Today's lunch was really delicious... a great big bowl of Albondigas with a side of flour tortillas. Yum! They also have great enchiladas, chimichangas and tacos! They have a nice lunch value menu for those on a budget, and you'll almost always get an extra meal from any selection on their entree menu. Staff is always quick and courteous. My pal Jenn swears by the potato ones. The wait is super long if you get there right around 5:30 ish. Parking is a bit of a pain unless you are lucky. I don't mind parking a few blocks away after stuffing myself with 6 tacos - the exercise really helps. valet is available for $3, but that is like 3 tacos. The drinks here are nice and strong. We had strawberry margaritas, jack and cokes, coronas, tequila pina coladas - all delicious . The decor kinda sucks, but we were not here for ambiance. This place used to be much better before Spencer started going to it on The Hills. Now it seems the place has sort of given up on service and quality and instead relies on it's dollar taco night. For shame. The tacos are about the only thing good here anymore (and they're still too greasy) unless you count the outdated trivia napkins that came with my cocktail. I like the atmosphere, but it all seemed better three years ago. I've gone three times in the last year (not on taco night, mind you) and each time I was more disappointed. My friend wouldn't shut the hell up about this place, so she dragged me to it one night unsuspectingly. What I discovered was something quite sublime ruined by terrible service. Pros: ahem...ONE DOLLAR TACO WEDNESDAYS (try them all, the crispy ones that is, you. can't. go. wrong.); $18 (non-watery!) margarita pitchers; addictive chips; cool patio area Cons: valet parking (at a Mexican restaurant? really?); eonic wait times. oh, and also, WORST SERVICE I HAVE EVER EXPERIENCED IN A RESTAURANT IN MY LIFE. I have never, ever, had to ask a waiter for water FOUR times. And not just one waiter. FOUR WAITERS. Are three glasses of water that difficult to wrangle up? This isn't the Sahel. The most irritating thing was watching my waiter sit and laugh at the computer as my table and I were getting visibly frustrated at the fact that he wouldn't bring over some damn water and my friend at the table was choking. After forty minutes, four waiters, and me having to physically stand up, leave the table, and walk over to threaten my waiter who was sitting on his ass, the water arrived (and of course, not from our waiter). His tip? $0. I have never not given a tip to a waiter in my life, but this occasion called for it. And I wasn't the only one who had to get up from their table and ask waiters for things. Simple requests like napkins and silverware were not filled at many other tables, including ours. But the water thing took it over the top. Their food is better than most Mexican restaurants I've been to here in the old U S of A, and their prices are ridiculously affordable. But the horrid service and complete lack of hospitality was revolting. However, I will try it again just because the food is that delicious. The space itself has a novelty vibe, with a dining room featuring large red banquettes and walls textured to look like a desert mountain cave, and the back patio creates a flawlessly original and almost adorably tacky setting for an afternoon margarita. The guacamole is some of the best found in LA, but the tacos and fajitas are the standout favorite. The queso fresco on the tacos is as fresh as it gets, and adds a rich, salty flavor to crisp shells and perfectly seasoned meat and vegetables. The fajitas arrive to the table sizzling in a cloud of steam, and while there is nothing particularly creative about the dishes, the no fuss entrees are executed to the very best. Let's start with the good: The food was absolutely delicious and the service was very good. Our order was taken promptly, the food was very well prepared and the portions were respectable. The endless chips and salsa kept us busy till the food arrived. The decor is fascinating and creates an interesting ambiance for dining on some good, authentic Mexican food. The prices were very reasonable too, especially given the amount of food you get. Now, on to the bad: We spent the first few minutes simply trying to figure out which door to walk in from. We tried the door on the left only to find that we had just walked in on a family enjoying their meal. Whoops, back to the other door. The second door also led to a dining area and neither doors had any staff that could seat us. So we ventured deeper, which is where we found someone who guided us to our table. So the first thing they need to do is figure something out about greeting their patrons at the door instead of having people wander inside trying to find "the counter". Next, I understand that this is a business and they look to maximize the number of people they can accommodate at any given time. But WHY must two tables be so close that a skinner-than-average human being can't get to their chair without shoving their ass into the person's face at the next table?! Oh Don Antonio's, how I miss thee. On my lala land excursion last week, I managed to make it back to Don Antonio's for a decent Mexican food fix. I asked for the "special" hot salsa, and as usual it delivered - a hole in the gut. This salsa is not for the faint at heart. It will hurt...hurt so good... I just love this place and it's as tasty as ever. I noticed a bit of recession affected service, i.e. not replacing the salsa on the table as before or what happened to the pickled carrots? I came here for dollar taco Wednesday and will not be coming ever again. This place sucked on many fronts. We had a 1.5 hour wait to get seated, after being told the wait was 1 hour. The tacos were bland and bone dry. The sangria was horrendously watered down. And the final straw? We paid in cash, only to have waiter come back later and tell us we were $30 short. I eat out with this group of friends all the time and we are NEVER short. NEVER. If you come here, I recommend pre-eating and don't order the tacos, don't order the sangria, and don't pay in cash. read more
