I ordered the chips and salsa along with the sweet potato/quinoa, buffalo chicken, and the pork belly tacos. I typically do not order pork belly from certain establishments because it's often tough and dry but DT's pork belly was pretty decent. The buffalo chicken taco came with generous chunks of bleu cheese and the sweet potato/quinoa taco was well seasoned but the texture of the soft potato threw me off. Overall everything tasted great. Service at the bar was prompt but the drinks could've been a little stronger for the price and size. The Hemingway marg (grapefruit) was super refreshing after a long 12 hr shift at work. The only regret I have is that I didn't find this place sooner than yesterday. After spending forever in the nail salon, it was safe to say that the bf and I had worked up an appetite. I passed this place on my way to Nando's on Sunday and it was packed. I mean the outside dining space was filled to capacity, and you could see people at the front of the restaurant waiting to be seated. I automatically thought that this place had to be good. Fast forward to yesterday, and we were greeted and seated by this tall guy (forget his name, but he was so nice). Our waiter came to greet us right away as well and he welcomed us after we told him that we were first-timers at Don Taco. Before he could tell us how ordering at this establishment worked, we had already figured it out (mainly because we were curious as to what the papers and pencils were on the table). There are individual disposable menus with boxes you check next to what drink/entree/appetizer/small plate/taco you'd like to order. The tacos are small, but priced well (normal tacos like your chicken, beef, etc) are just under $3.00 per taco, premium tacos are just under $4.00 per taco - this is your surf and turf, banh mi, pomegranate skirt steak, etc.). The tacos are full of flavor as well. I got the surf and turf, the pomegranate marinated skirt steak and the chicken. The bf got a banh mi taco, pork belly and something else... I cant remember. Needless to say, we were satisfied. We also ordered two chicken empanadas, and OMG. The best empanadas I've ever had at a restaurant. They tasted so homemade and so fresh. All of our food was hot and fresh. The salsa was delicious too. I also ordered a mango marg (it was half off, okay?) and it was sweet but strong. Just how I like it. All in all, we love this place and cannot wait to go back. We went here a few weeks ago and had a weird experience. It was the middle of the week around 2pm. No one up front to greet us-when the host came we realized he had been sitting at the back of the bar on his phone and had looked at us a few times before he came up. We asked to sit outside as a table had just opened. It was cleaned for us and as we were walking out, another waiter gave our table away. The host asked the person to move since he had already given us the table. We ordered a lot of tacos. One of almost all so that we could taste them. We got through our entire meal and were then told we could have and should have had sauces on our table. It would have changed our opinion of some of the tacos. No apology from the waiter and no effort to fix it so we wouldn't be upset. My husband likes spicy and it really would have made a big difference. Our waiter recommended the variations of pork tacos. This is our second visit here this weekend. We picked up to go late one night and loved the food so we decided to do lunch here again. Both times we got the Al pastor, Dilly Dilly, and the Bulgogi tacos. All were excellent, the combination of the pineapple and pork in the Al Pastor was a wonderful burst of flavor in your mouth. The Dilly Dilly is a great piece of grouper and the Bulgogi meat was tender and flavorful. The pomegranate skirt steak was very good and tender. My experience at Don Taco was underwhelming- the food was hit or miss but to top it all off the service was absent. The girlfriend wanted a margarita and after doing a quick Yelp search this place showed up. We visited on a Sunday around 5 and were quickly seated upstairs. She placed an order for a drink and it took probably 10 mins to come out even though the restaurant was relatively empty. She enjoyed her drink, so I can vouch for their adult beverages. As far as food goes, we ordered the chicken nachos, shrimp rice bowl, and a pomegranate glazed skirt steak taco and the surf n turf taco. The tacos came out first after roughly 20 minutes and they were the best part of this meal. This establishment serves tacos with an Asian twist. The flavors were unique. I will say the portion was a bit small for the price. The nachos came out next and they were sub-par compared to anything I have had. The nachos were very plain and there was not enough chicken. I found 4-5 small pieces on the whole plate. Keep in mind, this whole time we have not seen our waiter since we placed our order. He stops by and asks if we are ready for dessert. I then tell him we have not received the rice bowl. He goes and checks up and let's us know it will be out shortly. Looking back at this now, I should have just told him to cancel the order. The rice bowl was the worst- it contained a scoop of guacamole, some sautéed peppers scattered on top, 4-5 shrimp and a huge glop of cheese thrown on one side of the rice. Not only did it only visually displeasing, it also tasted horrible. This dish was plain, it was so bad I just ate all the shrimp and left it there. Throughout the whole meal, I did not see my waiter. They leave you a bottle of water at your table, this bottle was empty but no one refilled it. Honestly, this establishment was hovering near a 1 star review but the tacos edged them into the 2 star territory. I went here with some friends and I loved it! I had their vegetarian tacos (avocado, mushroom & sweet potato-1 of each), they were very good and inexpensive. I also tried their shot with salsa verde! I think that was the most exciting part of the night! So you get a shot of tequila, a shot of salsa verde (it is spicy) and a Modelo beer as a chaser. I loved that the spiciness of the salsa verde shot takes over the tequila's super strong after taste. Talk about genius!! I do not like canned beer, I wish the Modelo was bottled. Next time, I'll ask for a glass. I did not give it 5 stars because I did not like their margaritas. It just tasted like limeade with a little bit of tequila, very sweet & sour. The service is solid: friendly hostesses, attentive servers, and a manager always walks by and asks how everything is. The tacos are awesome. Every time we come, we order about 6 between the two of us (we always get one taco of the week). My absolute fave is the jerk shrimp taco. My second go-to is the buffalo chicken, but everything is tasty. The tacos of the week have never disappointed. Are the tacos small? NO! They are a little bigger than your standard street-sized tacos (only one tortilla though). These are a little more innovative than your normal street tacos though, so if you're looking for regular carne asada or chicken with cilantro and onions, you won't find that here. Went for the first time last night. I was worried we'd have to wait forever for a seat (it was Saturday night), but we got right in! We sat upstairs at the bar, the bar staff was so friendly & very knowledgeable about their menu. I know my husband and myself asked a ton of questions since we were newbies, but they answered every one with a smile. I got the chicken nachos, which was a huge portion, & they were delicious! I also got the "sweet heat" cocktail but was weary of jalapeño vodka, the bartender recommended I switch it out for Citroen vodka instead. Solid recommendation, it was delicious as well. I dined here Sunday, January 1, 2017 as a post-New Year's hangover meal. I loved the food, the service, and the atmosphere. The tacos are excellent. I'm vegan and I greatly appreciated the vegetarian options, and the staff was very accommodating and knowledgeable about ensuring they were tweaked to be vegan - dairy in some sauces and whatnot. I ordered three tacos: quinoa sweet potato, portobello, and fried avocado. They came with lime and two cups of sauce, one hot and one sweet/creamy. I'd highly recommend the fried avocado taco for anyone, not just vegetarians. The tacos are a bit small, so I'd order a minimum of 3 for someone as small as me, probably more like 4-5 for an average adult. I like the atmosphere in Don Taco, too. It has a fun, modern vibe, and it's well-decorated. What really struck me throughout my experience was how excellent their music was - kudos to whoever made the playlist or chose the station! Best part of my experience: the waiter. I really wish I could remember his name, because he deserves a lot of credit for being awesome. Great experience. Wanted to try ALL of the food but was completely stuffed. Every taco was amazing. I had the Mexican short rib, fried oyster, and buffalo chicken with Sriracha per recommendation of our WONDERFUL waiter Garry. He was top notch as was the food. Also, the chicken and beef empanadas are RIDICULOUSLY AMAZIIIING! The meat is succulent and juicy all while fried to perfection. First things first, I want to say that our server tonight was amazing and that this review has nothing to do with what he did for us. But with that being said, I will never come back and give my money to this establishment again! The front half staff was completely rude, and treated my party and me horribly. We came in and they treated us like we were going to do something horrible the entire time. They kept staring at us, and not paying attention to any of the other guests. Like we were going to dine and stiff them with the bill. Then everyone behind us who came in, they treated them the way someone should be treated when you come to a restaurant. The hostess told us that we couldn't wait in the restaurant until a table was ready, and when my friend asked if we could sit at the bar, she said only if you pay for something... my first reaction is why would you say that to us first off! And secondly, of course we would pay your service, that's why we came to the restaurant in the first place. Then when we were seated, she immediately said we had 90 minutes and that's it, and our time already started before sitting down. We were seated right next to the entrance, and not one time did we hear her or anyone else mention to the other guests that their was a time limit, or that they couldn't wait in the restaurant as they waited for a table to become available. They sat us at the table closest to the door; and when they wanted to keep the front door open, they asked the table further from the door if they were comfortable with this. But they didn't even bother to ask us, and we were closer. My sister had to ask them to close the door because it was freezing! Then the table next to us on the other side was there way before we arrived, and they didn't leave until maybe a few minutes before we did. And they didn't get told that their time was up, they just left on their own. But they made sure to tell us when our time was up, and they didn't even say thank you for coming or anything when we left the restaurant (except for our waiter). The male hostess was nice and told us where to access the menu, but the two women hostess' were rude and nasty to us from the beginning for no reason. They were even nasty on the phone days prior to us attending the establishment when we just wanted to know some information. I highly recommend that NO one dine here, and find somewhere else to eat and spend their money on. They don't need the meaning of the customer experience, nor customer service. I have already contacted the BBB about this visit, and I will never, ever, ever come back here again! Nor recommend this place to anyone I know! read more

Been having this place on my radar for quite a while and atlas..... my hubby and I visited here on a Saturday night for some drinks and dinner. I ordered (don't judge) the cluck, the pomegranate skirt steak, carnitas, land and sea, and the special of the week which was pork belly and a small order of guacamole and chips. To start of, the gauc and chips were absolutely amazing. It kinda reminded me of chipotle but much much better. I couldn't stop munching on it. Definitely a must order. I typically have to force myself to pay for guacamole in a restaurant and I was glad I did. The tacos were all pretty flavorful but the most memorable was the carnitas and the land and sea. The carnitas always takes some adjusting for me because I find it kinda dry, but what made this taco amazing was the flavor of the pork and red onions just complimented it so well. I know this may sound weird but it kind of put me in the mind of eating a good simple hotdog.. weird comparison I know..but I think it was the red onion. It was delicious though. I don't recall seeing or tasting any salsa on it because it was a bit dry but the menu stated salsa verde as a topping. I think it missed my taco..??anyway the land and sea was amazing. A perfectly beer bartered shrimp and tender beef. It was a perfect match. The pomegranate skirt steak was good too but tasted very similar to the land and sea as they used the same steak for both. I was disappointed with the pork belly because it literally seemed to me like it was the al pastor taco. It was good but had to grow on me a bit. I think I was expecting something g different but on the other token I didn't ask what was on it either. It came topped with a pineapple salsa or it could've been mango.. not really sure. My hubby ordered the land and sea, the dilly dilly, mr.Cordero, and Mexican street corn. He devoured the corn. It was our first time trying it and it was very pleasing. Let me start out with the food is really, very good. I came here on the third night and was greeted with a 45 minute wait. This wouldn't be a problem if we hadn't gone to the upstairs bar to find an entire room full of empty tables. Meanwhile, ~25 people shoved themselves into the small bar area. The managers mean really well and are very friendly. The wait staff was so confused I actually questioned if any of them had worked in a restaurant before. Our order was given away, and when it finally came out, 3 separate orders worth of food was all on one plate. The wait was very, very long for food. All in all, I would possibly come here again once the kinks are worked out. I don't think the food was anything that spectacular, so the service will have to be better. Don Taco is truly a GREAT addition to Old Town Alexandria!! The ambiance is definitely on point and the food is absolutely delicious. I highly recommend stopping in for a bite. My personal favorites are the Pomegranate Skirt Steak, Mahi Mahi, Surf and Turf and Bahn Mi tacos. If you decide later you would like something to cover that sweet tooth craving than I suggest you try out the apple esplanades, house made Churros, and Nutella taco while washing it down with a Pima Prina cocktail. Always willing to give a place a second chance here we go: 4.5 stars Rotating daily happy hours and Monday is half price margs. It's a true marg, no triple sec, but I found their cocktails more interesting. The sweet heat is a real treat (see what I did there?) But really it's good. Carlitos way was a bit lemon forward for me. For tacos this time: Jerk shrimp: served with a pineapple slaw, I really like these. Their red sauce as i just discovered is wonderfully spicy. Mexican short rib: I also really liked this one, esp with the red sauce. 5 star items: Lomo saltado: while not a traditional flavor profile this dish was excellent and had about 6 good size pieces making it good bang for your buck. This review is really hard to write because I have been to Don Taco since it has been open and I usually LOVE this place. But after last night, I'm not sure I will be coming back. Ill start with the good: - The margaritas are fantastic, some of the best I have had in the area. Definitely a little pricey but boy are they good. - The guac is something I crave on a weekly basis, it's just that good. The bad: - The service last night, I'm not sure what happened but when I walked in, there were about 7 servers just standing around chatting with each other and so I stood at the front waiting for someone to talk to me. Eventually I just walked up to someone and asked where I could find the table of people I was looking for. Everyone just seemed more concerned with themselves than actually helping the customers. - The service again. Once we were seated we were greeted by a wonderful man who seemed to be excited and energetic, but boy did that fade quickly. Over the course of the evening, he forgot our drink orders, visited our table once, maybe twice every hour, and then when we finally asked for our check, it took 45 minutes to receive and the check was wrong (he had missed the beer he took an hour and a half to get us). Maybe it was just an off night for everyone. I will still strongly encourage people to go there because I like supporting local businesses and I think Don Taco's food is really spot on, but the service last night (or lack there of) was really disappointing and put a bad taste in my mouth. OMG Don Taco is definitely a recommend place to go. While we did have to wait for about 35 min on the blazing heat today it was totally worth it. Once we were seated the service was amazing. Our waitress answered all of our questions and even told us about the place. The food was amazing I couldn't get enough of everything I ordered. The best part is was my margarita! They definitely don't skimp you with the alcohol! If your thinking about going GO!! If I could offer a tip to Don Tacos it would be to at least offer the option for reservations at least for the booths. Upstairs is pretty cramped. read more

A very welcome addition to Old Town! The tacos, guacamole, margaritas and fried oreo dessert are all must haves. It's a great atmosphere, only enhanced by their awesome bartenders (Katie is fantastic!). I've been here a few times since the grand opening and they seem to now be hitting their stride, making changes when it makes sense. If you find something isn't right, be sure to let them know. They work hard to make the customer happy! Having tried all the tacos now, the stand-out favorites are surf & turf, pomegranate skirt steak and fried avocado (amazing), but they're all pretty delicious. Absolutely order the guacamole as an appetizer and fried oreos for dessert -- you won't be disappointed. I'm not a dessert person, but those oreos might change that. While I had the regular margarita, my friends can't stop raving about the jalapeño margarita...just the right amount of heat at the end, apparently.
