Fabulous! We went for a last minute dinner on Thursday night. The restaurant was busy, but service was excellent. My husband refers to Don Taco as the place where you order tacos like sushi. You get a menu and little pencil and pick how many of each taco you want. Makes ordering so easy! Every taco we got was excellent. And the chips and salsa were great. I wasn't too hungry so I got 3 and that was plenty. My husband was hungry and he eats a lot so he got 5 and was happy with that amount. We also got the Mexican mules and they were great. read more

Wow, what a hip place! And the tacos are leeeeeegiiiiiit! My family and I came here on New Year's Day. After sightseeing all day, we came back to Old Town hungry and tired and this was conveniently down the street from our hotel. Thankfully, they were open. They seated us upstairs, which was pretty busy for a holiday. Even though they took a hot second to grab our orders, it was okay. I always love the extra time to sit and talk over the menu with my husband and daughter. The menu was short, but had some very unique and delicious dishes. If you are a taco-lover, you'll go ga-ga with some of their tacos. Get the empanadas (unforgettable), chicken nachos, skirt steak taco, shrimp taco and whatever specialty dessert they have (ours was a dessert taco). We in inhaled everything and was so excited at how tasty and packed with the right amounts of flavor everything we had was. Other than the service taking a teenie-weenie bit longer, I highly recommend this place, if you are in the Old Town Alexandria (Virginia) area. I went with some friends on a Friday evening. Their customer service was amazing! Was kind of stunned by the prices because at my good taqueria you can get 20 tacos (authentic Mexican tacos) for 12 dollars, whereas this place has ONE taco at around 4 dollars! When I saw the permit signs go up in the window I was so excited for this spot. Unfortunately it hasn't lived up to my expectations. Went there on the second night it was open and was really unimpressed. Decided to give it a break cause it was so early in the restaurant's life. Went back a few weeks later and I can't say much better. Look, it's not bad - it's just...there. The most frustrating part is that most things are just a small change away from being great. In most cases that small change is just a little extra salt, but more on that later. The drinks are the first problem. The place calls itself a tequila bar, and while the tequila list is impressive the cocktails leave you searching for tequila flavor. You would think the cocktail recipes would be spirit forward, but all five cocktails I tasted were way too heavy on whatever juice they featured instead of tequila. It's not about getting wasted, but they're just not well balanced. The empanadas were a high point, fried nice and crispy with big chunks of flavorful chicken and meat inside - not the shredded watery mush many empanadas are stuffed with. On to the tacos. First, and I'll admit this is a small nitpick, they don't double up their corn tortillas, which is not only traditional but also helps the tacos stay together. Between both trips we tried seven different tacos and only one - the banh mi taco - would really bring me back. The pork is tender and has the savory Maggi sauce flavor that immediately reminds you of a good banh mi. The toppings are crisp and they drizzle it with a sort of aioli that keeps each bite moist and tasty. Second place goes to the pomegranate skirt, tender and juicy with caramelized onions, but a little one-dimensionally sweet. The rest were just ok. The fillings were all quite bland. I got the impression that in an effort to appeal to a larger audience they were afraid to push the limit on seasoning, heat, and overall flavor. The short rib is under-seasoned and a little dry, with too much raw red onion. Sweet and spicy mahi wasn't particularly sweet or spicy. Pork belly was diced instead of a nice slice of pork belly so you couldn't really appreciate the ingredient, and also under-seasoned. Sriracha chicken was almost there, but if you get a bite without the sriracha mayo, it's bland and dry. They should consider tossing the chicken in the mayo before putting it on the taco for more even distribution. The biggest disappointment was the jerk shrimp. It wasn't terrible, but there was nothing even remotely jerk about it. These were fried shrimp (maybe coconut?) in a mildly sweet sauce with zero heat. None of the dark, grilled, herby, scotch bonnety goodness that jerk signifies. Call it something else and this would be fine, but labeled "jerk" it was the biggest disappointment of the night. The venue is great, with fun decor and an energetic vibe. Since I live so close I'll probably drop in for a beer and a tequila shot from time to time, but the food and cocktails are a real let down. read more

Best tacos on King street! From the street style menus- where you indicate the amount tacos you'd like, to the waitresses that bring the extra touch of Spanish culture, this is a pretty neat place. The subtle creativeness of using pallets on the walls to almost act as a frame (literally) with tequila bottles displayed was such a creative touch to the décor. As for the food! Depending on your appetite and whether you started with an appetizer, go with 3-4 tacos. They are small but packed with flavors that burst in you mouth. My favorite were "The Dilly Dilly", runner up were the "Spicy 'Shroom". The "Cauliflower Tempura" were good as well, the uniqueness of the fig and cauliflower were interesting. I also tried the "Fried Avocado" taco although it was pretty good the fattiness of the avocado and it being fried, was a bit much for me. These tacos are all definitely worth a try! Not impressed. This is the third time I've been here in the past 2 weeks. The first time was later at night after dinner, the second was an early lunch hour and now is dinner time. Food: The first night I ate here I was drinking, and I thought the food was decent... The last two time I was here I was not drinking as much... The food sober NOT good. Chips and salsa: get a B - they are pretty good! But they are NOT complementary. Tacos: I tried 5 different tacos, while unique, not very good quality meat. They get a D. Nachos: I had the nachos, definite F. Nothing special, very bland, meat was again low quality. Didn't even bother to finish them. Drinks: I had the house margarita and the prima pina. They both tasted a little watered down. So I ordered it with Milagro silver tequila to see if it was just their house tequila that I didn't care for. The upgrade definitely helped the flavor, but they up charged $3 for each drink I added Milagro to... Just as a point of reference, there are a few restaurants around the area that use Milagro as their HOUSE tequila, so it's not a crazy upgrade. I watched for several hours as a glass of mint that was probably bad two days ago was moved around a few times but never thrown away! If anyone was to eat that, I promise they would have gotten sick from the bacteria that was surely growing on it. I included a picture. The BOTTOM LINE: Basically I left hungry and not feeling very well each time I was here. For two of us to drink margaritas for a few hours and two entrees our bill before tip was over $100. We typically frequent MXDC in DC that has amazing high quality food, makes delicious drinks and chips and salsa are complementary (which most Mexican restaurants do!) and our bill is usually around $70. I leave full and buzzed. Staff: Pretty disappointing, don't really try to make conversation or even try to provide a good experience. The bartender on the second level watched tv, back facing the customers the entire hour I was up there and only turned around every once in awhile to see if anyone needed a drink. We decided to go sit at the main level bar and when asked why, we told them the energy was really low up there. They said it was just because it was hot... Which brings me to another point! THEY NEVER HAVE THE A/C on! It's sweltering and uncomfortable. In the day time it is obvious to see the bar isn't very clean. We came here a few times to give it a chance, they failed. Mexican is hardly what I got when I ate my food. There was no Mexican flavors. We ordered to go. The food was super basic, flavorless and I hate to say this but when did tacos become so small and the price so high. My bf ordered the tuna and grouper taco and his palm was bigger than the tacos and he's not a big guy. The tacos are 2 bites and the flavor was not there. There was no wow factor. I ordered the shrimp bowl and again there was no Mexican seasonings or flavors just seem like they put salt and pepper and thought the veggies would mask the fact that nothing else was seasoned. The yellow rice had no flavor the beans had no flavor. Literally there was no flavor except from the veggies and the jalapeños I added and I'm glad I did that. The "Mexican" street corn was a joke. The corn was boiled! The sauce was basically mayo based topped with cheese and spicy. Mexican street corn should have a grilled taste this was far from it. The food looked good but the flavor wasn't there. I guess sitting inside the place and the atmosphere is why they have 4 stars. The place is really nice and clean. We decided to check out Don Taco after visiting Alexandria on numerous occasions and observing a hefty crowd there each time. The 4-star Yelp rating further helped to convince us it was worth a shot. Unfortunately this place did not live up to the hype. We ordered guacamole (runny texture) and chips (decent flavor but seemed stale) along with a bulgogi taco (room temp beef with consistency of a canned stew) and an ahi taco (this one was relatively good by comparison). Went out with a group of 4 and were seated pretty quickly for a Saturday night. The food was great and the service was nice as well. The surf n turf shrimp & steak taco is everything! (Sorry my tummy wasn't bigger lol) The overall atmosphere was calm, welcoming and the layout was nice with just enough space that one doesn't feel cramped and squeezed in like so many other places. I went to Don Taco for the first time this past Friday and again with an out of town guest on Sunday. Overall both experiences were good and there were quite a few really good tacos. There were a couple of things I would question about the service, but first let me start with the food. On my first visit we ordered a large guacamole to share. This is one of the first times I have ordered a guacamole or salsa appetizer and there were exactly the right amount of chips accompanying the dish. Well done there. Moving on to the tacos, we ordered about 14 total - note: the tacos are small, so anywhere between 3 and 5 could easily be a meal. I ordered the following: Pork Belly - good, but was expecting a little more fat. After all it was labeled 'pork belly'. Lamb Chimichurri - One of the better tacos on the menu. Incredibly tender. Pomegranate Glazed Skirt Steak - a bit of a mess with the glazed onions, but very flavorful. Shrimp Taco - another good taco. About 3 or 4 batter dipped fried shrimp with a nice accompanying sauce Short Rib Taco - right up there with the lamb taco. This one is also very good. When I returned with a friend on Sunday after having a couple of appetizers at Hank's down the block, I order the Lamb and Short rib tacos again. Those two were really the best I have tried so far. The two beverages I ordered really weren't that remarkable. I had a Mexican Mule and the House Margarita, the second having too much sugar and too sour almost causing immediate heart burn. I'd stick with their draft beers. Small drinks with little alcohol and too much sugar are just not for me. Probably the strangest part of my experience at Don Taco was the service. One phenomenon I noticed both upstairs and downstairs was the tendency to bring one or two patrons at a table their orders and then return a few minutes later with the rest of the order. Being all together on a larger serving tray didn't bother me, everyone not getting their order at the same time is a new one for me. The other strange thing was that typically the person who took your order is not the person delivering your order. When that happens and your server goes to the wrong table with your order, and that table says they didn't order the food, the server has this look as if they are just going to give up and head back to the kitchen. This actually happened on both Friday and Sunday night and if it weren't for my muttering out loud, keep checking with the other tables, I think our food would have headed back to the kitchen. A little more "team work" or throw some numbers on the tables would really help out with this confusion. A little more attention to detail, training and coaching the wait staff would greatly improve some of this dysfunctional approach. Making sure that there is sufficient amount of silverware settings at a table for the number of diners would at a bare minimum work to solve some of these problems. Having to ask for another place setting multiple times can be frustrating. Seeing your beverage sitting on the bar for a couple minutes while the wait staff walks right past it multiple times is also a little annoying. Yeah, I wanted to order a drink, I just didn't want you deliver it as soon as it was ready. That kind of stuff can be fixed with a good wait staff manager. A good wait staff team member is a reflection of a good manager. Watch your people and help them improve. Running around looking busy, but doing nothing serves no one's interest. read more

Been twice now and I'll probably keep going. The drinks are good and the menu is done a little differently. Instead of ordering a meal, you order individual items, and simply get more later if you want. It lets you try a few different things, but also lets you just get a little instead of a whole meal if you aren't that hungry. The food prices are very reasonable and the drinks prices are comparable for the area. My wife and I had tacos and the chicken empanada and a couple of drinks. Everything was good. When the server asked how the empanada was, my wife's response was that it was "stupid good." She ended up ordering another one at the end of the meal. I got the fried avocado and jerk shrimp tacos, both really good. For drinks, I really like the Mexican Mule. The Exchange is also interesting, mostly because it comes with a shot of "sangrita" which is some sort of spicy cilantro/jalapeno concoction that is really tasty. read more
