I forgot to give this place it's due justice. It's funny I'm doing this review today, because the last time I was at the Don was on Mother's Day. Lol. But anyways, I'm a very big hater of Mexican food. But this is literally the only place where I enjoy the food. I came here for the brunch and it was sooo good. The tacos are awesome. The chorizo, bacon, and egg is definitely the best I've had. The breakfast burrito was also very good. My first time through here I had six tacos and a burrito. After walking by this restaurant for months decided to give it a try tonight. He no idea what to expect. There was an amazing and creative variety of tacos and other options to chose from on the menu. I have never had such flavorful tacos! I tried a variety of tacos and an empanada. Outstanding! The food and atmosphere are great. A colleague and I were in the area for a business trip and stumbled upon Don Taco. They have an incredible selection of tacos. I will say that the tacos are really small. I had 4 and could have eaten more. The "fried avocado" taco was absolutely amazing, and I would order it again given the chance. The "land and sea" taco was also great. I ordered "the cluck taco" and it was different but good for fried chicken on a taco. I also ordered the "chorizo and eggs" taco and probably wouldn't get it again. It was a lot of egg and not as good as the others. Finally I ordered tres leches, and it was delicious. Finally made my way into Don Taco after watching it ready itself for Alexandria. Group from work went for lunch and so trying anything off the drink menu was not going to happen. As previous reviews indicated, you are not going to get your standard Mexican fare at this restaurant. Got to the hostess stand just before noon, the place is rather open. She went through her usual questions "upstairs, downstairs, booth, bar" and after three minutes of these she finally says go ahead and seat yourself. Being the astute comedian in the group I said, " why did we need the hostess again"? We had a great server, very informed of menu. It is filled with very interesting items like an avocado fried taco, portobello taco and buffalo wing tacos to name a few. Rice bowls and expend as are also on the menu. The ordering process is fun. Like sushi ordering mark what you want and give to your server. We all varied on our orders but had to have the guacamole. Coming from Southern California, when I get guacamole, I have become very tolerant of the bland, overly creamy, poorly mixed guacamole. Don Taco, you blew my socks off. Just short of licking the plate, the guac was out of this world. I would go back just forget that! The only complaint I had was the food coming out in shifts that made some people who were at the table uncomfortable. As soon as we gave them permission to go ahead and eat while it was hot, they paid no attention to when our food came out. I am anxious to go back for evening, test out some margaritas and stay long enough for desert. Looking forward to seeing how the menu evolves, see if they stay adventurous and have more guacamole. So I happened to find this place by accident, best accident ever.. the food was tasty and the prices are reasonably. I've been here twice and every time I want a bowl, some tacos and the empanadas, needless to say that's way too much food for me, so I have to settle for one or the other. I love their ordering style (you just check everything you want on their small size menu that they have at the tables). The drinks are good but they're not consistent with them. The overall atmosphere is good, go upstairs if you want a more private feeling. Every time I've gone is always pack, which is always a good sign for me. Definitely the place to stop by if you're craving tacos.. they're obviously not your typical Mexican tacos, they're more American than anything but they are delicious!! read more

Trendy spot in Old Town Alexandria! Headed upstairs to be seated - the lighting is a little dim but cool vibes! My friend and I shared the guacamole and chips, chicken nachos and each for some tacos. The portions are fairy decent but it should be noted that the tacos are more a la carte size but so well done! Our server was awesome and had great suggestions, knowing it was our first time there. We went for an early New Year's Eve dinner and had a great night - the service and food were top notch. Very appreciative with how they are following guidelines, enforcing mask wearing, and high level of cleanliness. We had jalapeño margaritas, queso and chips, and an assortment of tacos. I've been on the search for a great empanada and taco since the closing of a beloved DC restaurant, Mama Chuy --- moment of silence. I went to Don Taco on a Friday night for a quick order of empandas and tacos. Despite the crowd, service from the bar was very fast. Both chicken and beef empanadas were hearty; big in size and plenty stuffed. The surf and turf taco was delicious. I wasn't a fan of the salsa selection, but maybe some pico de gallo would be a more flavorful option next time. Overall, I'm glad I found Don Taco and look forward to going again soon. read more

They have Mice or Rats!!! Small black furry critter ran under our table and the table next to us, she even asked me if i saw it too and i said yes. Definitely have mice/rats. The burrito was rice and some meat, save yourself the time and make uncle bens dirty rice at home (thats what it tasted like) and save yourself 12 bucks. Water had black bits of something in it. Main takeaways: understaffed/poor service; uneven food; below average sangria; very loud. The service was pretty bad at the start -- no introductions (Hi, my name is...)/welcome to the restaurant/what are you celebrating/there was nothing. The first person at our table waited 15 minutes before a server approached let alone took a drink order. We had two servers that seemed to operate on their own; which led to confusion during the meal. Drink orders dragged (at most 30 minutes) or were simply forgotten. We put in orders for more chips/sangria (extra tequila was ordered to add to the sangria)/water and had to follow up with our servers several times before those items made it to the table. Some items didn't make it at all. For the main event -- the tacos -- a few orders came out later than others and the tacos themselves were uneven for the table. Sometimes great, sometimes crap (the skirt steak was chewy and overdone for at least two in our group). Desert was typical; the churros were great, the empanadas were okay. One person at our table received his fried oreo desert 20-30 minutes before his tacos. Paying checks was the usual cluster of a large table. One person (leaving earlier than the group) waited at least half an hour to hand the server her credit card after receiving her check and then an additional 20 or so to get it back from the server; so a total of 50 minutes to close out from request to singing the check. The place was very busy so maybe the bar/kitchen had lagging issues; maybe more staffers were needed?? We did have a partial owner and two managers stop by to check in on our table. We were pretty honest with them and they did their best to "take care of things." Which amounted to a few comped dishes for those that complained about the food; as for the service, well it was their Grand Opening. I would go back a second time; I believe in second chances but if it's anything like what happened on Saturday that will be the last time. read more

An awesome addition to the King Street area! My buddy and I ate here yesterday @ 11:30 am for the first time. We work at State Dept FCU near King St metro, where there is little to no access to tacos. We heard about this place and decided to walk down for lunch. Our server, Rashad, was great. Very welcoming and attentive. He explained the process selecting what you want from the menu card. We ordered the white queso, guacamole, and both the chicken and beef empanadas. The empanadas were nice and crisp. FYI, the beef empanada is filled with sirloin, not ground beef... but it was still really good. As for the tacos, we ordered buffalo chicken, mahi mahi, pork belly, and banh mi. Everything was superb. It's not like a normal taco place, where all you do is swap the proteins. Each one of these tacos had its own flavor profile. The pork belly was by far my favorite! I ordered one pork belly to go, just so I could give it to one of my buddies at work. He bit into it and said it was one of THE best tacos he's ever had. An hour later, he walked down there with 3 co-workers and ordered 4 more tacos (3 pork belly and 1 pomegranate skirt steak)! Don Taco occupies the space that Flat Iron Steak used to reside in. I am going to let all 250 people I work with know how great this place is, since it's only a 10 min walk from our headquarters. Could not even leave the restaurant without writing about how great this place is! Kyle was our server and he went above and beyond our entire meal. We had a party of four plus a toddler and everything was great! Good food, unique drinks (you must try Sip of Smoke!), and my son loved the queso! Worth any wait for a table! I don't know if it was the soccer game that was on or something else but the bartender and rest of the staff were underwhelming and seemed agitated. The staff were swearing in Spanish about something being sh!t. We ordered the queso and a couple of signature cocktails. They were ok. After looking over the rest of the menu and the the environment we were experiencing, we decided to go across the street for dinner instead. A few girlfriends and i went here for late night food and drinks. I'm not a huge fan of Mexican period but their dessert taco was phenomenal!! The bartender (i dont remember ger name) was very sweet and helpful with drink suggestions. I highly recommend the Ernesto Hemingway..it's beyond delicious. This place is pretty cool! The premise is simple you receive a sheet were you write the amount of tacos you want in a small box to the left with sides and varies other meals as well. They have a wide selection of Tequila given that it is a tequila bar lol and pretty good beers as well! They have bar seating and tables along the right side of the restaurant and are open until 2am which is AWESOME! I would say this place deff can get crowded quick because it is so popular and the food selection is great. We went on a Tuesday and it was buy 2 tacos get one free so we had to do that lol we got the El Pastor, Fried Avacado, The Cluck, White Queso and Chips , and Mexican street corn all of it was phenomenal! Awesome spot in old town for some delectable tacos and great service! Came here with the hubby and started out with the queso. Sooo good. For our main--we shared 6 tacos. Looking back, we could've each had one more since they are somewhat small. So 4 each. They were all really good but the standouts were pomegranate glazed skirt steak, fried avocado, and surf and turf! The tacos are interesting, the ambience is amazing, the bar tenders are cool, and the customers I encounter each time I go there are the kind you want to be friends with even after the tequila wears off. All around, it's a great little bar, much more intamate than Don Tito which is nice. It fits right into Old Town like it was always meant to be. I loved Don Taco in general, and I've always had my birthdays and special events here with large groups. I loved bringing out of town guests and having gatherings here. There's only one table that can accommodate 10 people. They don't allow reservations on the weekends but have always taken reservations for that one table, as there is literally nowhere else to sit with a large group. When I called today, they said they wouldn't take my reservation and my large party would have to just show up and wait for that one table to open up. So if someone came 5 minutes before us, we'd be standing in their lobby for two hours. I'm really frustrated and angry about this, and won't be using Don Taco for my celebrations any longer. read more

Yummy street tacos, plus a selection of delicious, unique margaritas. Try the spicy margarita, or the one with pineapple- they're all excellent! Service is consistently great, and bartenders are really nice. Food is priced reasonably, drinks are priced about what you'd expect from Old Town Alexandria. There's an upstairs bar as well. Don Taco is one of our favorite places to go after work. It's open late and there are no deceptive timings on their website where the kitchen randomly closes and the bar stays open. They are consistently fast every time and the tacos are probably one of the best in this area. Although they are small, they turn the tables around pretty quickly and the wait is never long. Don Taco has been one of the most amazing tacos (favorites Carnitas, Shrimp bacon and dilly dilly) and Elote (you need to order this!!! AMAZING) I have had. Went there on a trip recent trip to DC, but will need to go down to Alexandria more often when the craving hits, service is great and the town is lovely. Tried this place out for happy hour today with a couple of friends and it definitely beat my expectations. I knew it had just opened so I expected to see some kinks either in the food or the service, but honestly overall everything was really great! I was especially impressed with how quickly the food and drinks came out. Alright so, the good: -$5 margaritas on Monday and they were GOOD. Didn't taste watered down. I appreciate a margarita where you can taste the alcohol and it's not cloyingly sweet, and this hit the spot. -chicken empanadas. This may actually have been my favorite dish, and at $3 for two I almost got more.. But had to save room for the tacos! -the two tacos I had were the surf n' turf and the bahn mi, and they were both delicious. The not as good: -the churros. SUPER sad face. The portions were generous, which I appreciated, but the dessert itself missed the mark. The churros tasted a little bland.. I think they needed more cinnamon and sugar. And the chocolate also was missing something I can't quite pinpoint. Possibly it too was just not sweet enough. -the ceviche. To be fair (and with the risk of sounding obnoxious) I have been spoiled by tasting ceviche at a variety of restaurants all over the country, so it's completely possible this WAS good ceviche... But honestly was just very simple lime flavor and didn't hold my interest. The prices were all on point and it makes me nervous they'll go up ;) I also have to give a shout out to our waitress Flo who was phenomenal -- extremely friendly, always coming by to check on how our food and drinks were/pour us water/ generally make sure we didn't need anything (without being at all overbearing!)
