There also was a spacious parking lot. We walked in without reservation on Saturday for an early dinner. They also have lunch specials Monday thru Friday. We ordered sashimi for two plus raw sea cucumber and abalone which were very fresh. It came with three side dishes: cucumber & apple salad which was refreshing with right amount of mayo, potatoe pancake with creamy mushroom and scallop sauce which was very unique and tasty and golbangyi salad. I took my parents here for Father's Day this year. This course was $250 (before tax + tip) definitely enough for 4 people. This place is reasonably priced. The seafood was fresh. The appetizers could have been more interesting. It was a lot of vegetable focused side dishes. I didn't understand the cream of mushroom dish but my dad seemed to enjoy it. The main course, we ordered variety of different sashimi fish. It included tuna, tuna belly, yellowtail, fluke, red snapper, salmon, squid, octopus, and abalone. Then lastly, fish bone soup to end the meal. The restaurant used the left over fish bones with a little bit of meat to cook a spicy seafood soup, and that was refreshing and delicious. I've been here before they remodeled/relocated to the bottom floor, and recently came back a few times. The seafood and sashimi combos they have are full of a variety of raw seafoods and cooked appetizers as well. Honestly, I'm not too accustomed to some of the things that were served, like sea cucumber, sea squirt, etc., but there's no doubt that everything was very fresh and a great bang for your buck. This is not like a high end omakase dining experience but if you're really into seafood and trying new things, I would recommend trying this place out. This restaurant has a unique setup. For starters it's free valet parking. Then you have a choice to make. You can go upstairs for their Korean BBQ or head downstairs to their seafood/sushi experience. I heard about their fresh seafood so I gave it a try. You walk in and they have fish tanks setup by the chefs. It also has an eclectic menu for sushi, sashimi, and a set meal options that comes with soup, side items, etc. I liked how the sushi and sashimi was delicate and broke down easily. I ate lunch outside in 90 degree weather. The table was covered in a tent and the shade made the dining experience bearable. The waiter brought cold bottled water (included in the meal) and the menus. The menu was in Korean so it may be difficult for non korean speaking customers to order. I ordered the Palisades Park sushi bento box that came with sushi and sashimi. The banchan (side dishes) with boiled egg, fish cake, kimchi, and a whole small fish also came with the meal. The sushi tasted average and the banchan was ok. The sauce on the sushi and dressing on the salad was more than my liking. Next time, I will ask for the dressing on the side. I am a huge sushi fan, and I am giving 5 stars just for their amazing lunch special. Most lunch specials are during the week but DHSS's is on Saturday's and Sunday's. Their lunch special menu is extensive, but one item for $11.99 you get rolls, sushi, sashimi, soup, salad, and fried tempura. you also get banchan (side dishes) galore. And its not crap quality but their fresh stuff. umm what more can you want? Yes the entrance looks shady but once you get past that you will discover your new favorite place to eat on the weekends. i literally have been telling everyone about it. Other than their lunch special, DHSS is one of those sushi places where you can order those huge boats filled with all just sushi. Went for Daily Lunch Special Food - 5/5. There is a huge variety of banchan and they all taste pretty good. The gyeran jjim was fluffy, the mackerel pike was grilled well and the dotorimuk had great texture. The only thing that wasn't too good was the kimchi, as it tasted very recently made so the flavor was plain raw napa cabbage with red pepper seasoning. Salad had a tasty dressing, tempura had a clean batter, salmon and fluke sashimi was delicious and the maeuntang had a good spicy flavor. There was a lot of different food and they all tasted good. Service - 4/5. Fast and responsive. They come quickly when called for and deliver anything you requested relatively fast. When they bring you the check, they bring you oranges as well. Bonus points to service! Value - 5/5. Their lunch specials are daily with huge portions and great quality sashimi. My family and I have been going here for years for korean sashimi. The place actually renovated and changed a lot, as it's now a more refined Japanese establishment. Although I miss the nostalgia and charm of the original restaurant, I greatly enjoyed my meal at the new restaurant. I feel like this place has been around since I was a little kid....which was a really long time ago. I remember tagging along with my parents and their friends whenever they had reunions with their friends and they would have a feast filled with lots of whole fish and soju. They seemed to enjoy themselves but I never went on my own until my friend told me about their ridiculous lunch special. Being a sucker for great lunch specials, I had to check it out and it did not disappoint. When you walk into the place, it seems like you're walking into a shady underground dungeon. It wasn't well lit and the decor and furniture looked like it hadn't been changed since I was a little kid. If they add some strobe lights, it could be easily converted into a seedy nightclub. But on to the actual food. For $12, you get sushi and sashimi assortment plus vegetable tempura (fried perfectly), small grilled mackerel, and a choice between udon or spicy fish soup. The food was all very solid. Actually what impressed me most about the meal were the plates and silverware they used. They brought out the sashimi on this really fancy rock. The sushi came out on a clean wooden board. The bowls and utensils were nice as well. I haven't eaten here for dinner but I imagine if you were willing to drop some cash, you could have a pretty righteous feast here. There are so many options for great Korean-Japanese food in the Fort Lee/Palisades Park area, but I love this restaurant in particular for their unique lunch specials. Yes, it can be a little pricey ($10-12 per person?), but you get SO much food in return. I'm a big fan of their al bap, which is white rice topped with katsuobushi, tobiko in varying colors (orange, black, green - very pretty!) and nori. It sounds kind of strange, but it tastes amazing. It's actually part of a lunch special combo with dwenjang jjigae, which comes out bubbling hot. Their ban chan is great too - they give you a whole grilled mackerel as well as egg jjim (steamed egg with scallions on top), which is one of my favorites. read more

Came here for dinner on Saturday night with my husband before hitting the spa -- neither of us are Korean (nor do we speak/read Korean) so we couldn't read the specials on the walls nor did we know what a bunch of the menu items were. So unless you know some hangul, ordering soju is just going to be guessing at random (or asking for help), and it also turns out that it's Dong Hae Su San -- not the english name Susan! In case you were wondering. Driving down Grand Ave, this restaurant is off by itself with a dedicated parking lot. The sign from the road says "Best Seafood Restaurant" in English. The building is two stories -- the top floor is a billiards hall, and the restaurant is on the bottom floor. So you have to go down a flight of stairs to get in, and I didn't see any handicap-accessible entrances. Our server was really accommodating and did a good job of explaining the different entrees -- I had the first entree (dong hae jeung sik -- sushi/sashimi sampler w/4 pieces of tempura, a bowl of spicy fish & tofu soup, and a grilled saury for good measure) and my husband went for the fish intestine soup. He really enjoyed it, and if I hadn't been so full from everything I'd ordered I would have tried more than a sip of his broth :o Broth was spicy and hearty, and tasted "cleaner" than a beef-tripe soup (my only intestinal comparison point). The raw fish was fresh and the piece-size was generous. I would probably get the jeongsik that didn't have the tempura/hot pot with it next time, just because it was an enormous amount of food, or try a different combination special. We will definitely go back and try more of the menu! The live octopus (like, still squirming...) is very intriguing :D Service was decent, though our entrees came out at different times. My sushi and tempura arrived while he noshed on banchan, and our hot soups arrived together -- the end of my meal = the beginning of his. Not sure if it's fair to blame that on the kitchen or if we should just both have ordered the same type of meal? Getting our server's attention after ordering for things like "more water" and "belatedly ordering a drink" was challenging, but not impossible. There's a broad range of price-points on the menu -- our entrees came to about $40-45 together, but different combo platters for the table come in from $80-$300. WORST restaurant I've been to in my life! Don't waste your time and money here. 2 people ordered from here, and both got sick later that day (one with nausea and upset stomach, and the other with nausea for multiple days and violent vomiting in the middle of the night). We had had a lot of leftovers and called to get a refund, but they said that we have to go to the hospital to get bloodwork done that proves that we were sick from their food. We had emptied everything out at that point and was feeling better and definitely did not want to make an unnecessary trip to the hospital with covid. Then they LIED about agreeing to get us a refund and took our credit card number and info. We never got our refund, and when we called weeks later to ask about this, they denied agreeing to give us a refund and kept avoiding our calls saying the owner is out and that he will return our call when he gets back. They never got back to us, of course, and despite making multiple calls, they never apologized and were extremely rude and unprofessional, talking among themselves calling us unreasonable and rude while we could still hear everything they were saying. I saw another review from a customer who had exactly the same experience, so this kind of terrible service must be how they routinely deal with problems. Very concerning. read more

I went here to enjoy lunch today, but was told by one of the waitresses that there would be a long wait as only one person/chef (someone who was able to cut the fish) was available today. As we were getting ready to order, the same waitress told us that there would be a 30-40 minute wait to get the food as many other customers were waiting. We said we understood and asked her to still place in the order in which instead of agreeing she kept trying to deter us from ordering and insinuated we order something else. I understand that there is a shortage in staff, but isn't that an issue for the manager to then call in for someone else to come in? And if the restaurant is known for their raw fish shouldn't their staff not be preventing customers from ordering it? They are trying to do fusion with the side dishes? Its too overpowering and you end up not wanting to eat the sashimi. They give ample amt of sashimi but its alot of salmon, tuna, hamachi. Was looking for clean crisp kind of food but its creamy greasy dish after dish then the sashimi is mostly oily fish. Too heavy for my palate. If you look for this place on google, you'll get "Dong Hea" as a result. Apparently someone misspelled the name. For Koreans, this is sea food heaven. The name, Dong Hae, means East Sea. It refers to the east side of the Korean peninsula. The Korean/Japanese mixed cuisine is served family style. See the pictures I've uploaded to see what to expect. Unfortunately, I only started taking photos half way through the meal, so my food porn is a bit dated. This is a sea food restaurant. Horrible experience.. what happened to them? Financial struggles after opening the bbq spot upstairs? Seriously the quality of this place just severely dropped from their sashimi to sides. Went on Christmas Day and honestly if you're going to open on Christmas I thank the hospitality folks for working but please don't open if you're not capable of putting out quality food. So here's what happened family goes in and orders the mixed fish sashimi which is a $200 meal. Usually the sides come first but we got a thing of mussel soup and fried tempura then our main fish came out... before the haesam (assortment of sea creatures) which never happens. Ok so you're busy.. which honestly they weren't. All outside tables were empty. Then they give us this nasty eel on mashed potatoes with bugles... yes the chips WTF? Is that supposed to be some fancy creation?! It was pathetic. Then they give you this tasteless fried whole fish which is basically inedible cause it was fried so long the flesh just dissipated and was allll bones. The fish for sashimi was pathetic for what your paying. Wish I could have taken pictures. Then lastly the spicy fish soup at the end without any fish and the smallest bowl of rice you can imagine.
