Great sushi!! It can be busy in there too, so expect a wait during busy times. The sushi checks are usually very friendly. The service is pretty good, but sometimes you have to ask for the standard things (refills, check, etc). It's reasonably priced and the quality of fish is good. The sushi at Dong Hae is pretty mediocre American style sushi. If you have any experience with high quality sushi this place will not interest you in the slightest. If you however, are looking for sushi in Lompoc and it happens to be a Monday where Sushi Teri (the better place in Lompoc to get sushi/sashimi) is closed, then this will do the trick. The Aloha Roll and Poke Tuna are tasty and fresh. The Hawaiian Roll also had a nice flavor profile and the fish was fresh as well. They have many cooked rolls which is great for those who do not eat raw fish (thus we eat here when the Mother-in-Law is in town). The Salmon Tempura Roll and Crunch Roll are two that stand out for cooked rolls and I ate them with no problem when I was pregnant. My only warning for this menu: PLEASE for your own well being stay away from anything with the words monkey and balls in it. We should never ever have tried the fried disgusting balls that arrived at our table covered in grease and I have no idea what else. We sampled it and were in complete horror that they would even have it on their menu. We told the waitress that it was awful. She left it there and walked away, no offers for something more appetizing or replacements. Bad service that time. We have been there quite a few times since it opened a few years ago and I am happy to report that there is usually nice waitress staff. The other sushi rolls and meals are very hit or miss. It is obvious this isn't a Japanese restaurant but rather a Korean one. Many of the dishes are heavily influenced by Korean flavors. That isn't necessarily a bad thing, but just know that you are not getting authentic Japanese flavors. Overall I would keep any of my foodie friends far away from Dong Hae, but as for a Lompoc eatery it is pretty decent and it has a more modern vibe than nearly anything else in town. I do like Sushi Teri rolls more when given the choice, but Dong Hae does substitute well when needed. read more

So here's the thing about Dong Hae Sushi...go now, before the rest of the world catches on. The Chef is personable, but it's not his demeanor that has me so impressed; it's the knife skill...it's the quality of fish...and my goodness it's the absolutely incredible finishing touches. Excellent place to eat! I went here for the first time with my girlfriend and it was a truly fantastic experience. We sat at the sushi bar and it had a great atmosphere and the staff were fantastic. They are very friendly coming in and leaving. They give A LOT of food on the Lunch Box service option. They do tend to make the rolls a bit big, but they are fresh and taste great. I wish they would use ginger dressing on the salad instead of ranch, but that's just a preference. The green tea is good. I also wish they would use Jasmine Rice instead of whatever they are using on the side. Overall, I've been several times already. Even when it is busy we are served in a reasonable time and the wait staff is quick and checks often. Give it a shot. read more

If you are in Lompoc I would recommend Dong Hae's sushi. Not because it's the best sushi in California, that goes to Shogun in Palmdale, but because you aren't getting anything better within 60mi. I've eaten at sushi houses all over the world, and extensively in Japan, and have learned what makes a good sushi joint. Watch the chefs prepare the sushi. Talk with them about where it all comes from, what their experience is. This will give you insight into what you are about to eat. Here at Dong Hae they carefully select which fillet to cut from, feeling the meat for consistency. They enjoy their work and are proud to present it for the customer. Emphatic about their trade and dedicated to some random guy sitting at their bar, this place has sushi soul. They obviously get good, but not great, sushi which is their only limitation ... but we can't blame their sources for ingredients to much. I have been here multiple times, each worst than the last. The dining atmosphere is uncomfortable at best, and though service has always been polite, don't even get me started on the food. Their rolls are actually okay, but their beef teriyaki tastes like it's been marinating for a week, WAY too strong, to the point of having to spit it out into a napkin (experienced this both times I ordered it). What grossed me out the most though (like almost threw it up), was when I noticed halfway through my shrimp tempura that they still had huge poop veins in them. My sweetie and I are regulars here so I would like to give an outstanding review. Unfortunately, were were there this past weekend and our lunch wasn't the greatest, mainly for reasons of service. When we came in, the hostess directed us to a dirty table and told us someone would be by to clean it for us. We waited a few minutes, noticing the wet and dirty-looking rag that had been sitting in a heap on the table. The table was wiped, but I sat down with the distinct feeling it was less than clean. Our lunch (bento boxes) were good, but didn't seem quite as fresh as they are during the week. Our server wasn't very attentive, and we had flag her down to ask for refills on our drinks. The last couple of times we have been in, service has been spotty and the restrooms weren't clean. In fact, the last time we came in, the women's toilet was clogged and the staff didn't respond with much concern. There are days when Dong Hae is really excellent, and others where they miss the mark somewhat. While the food is always good there, they lose points for dirty tables and restrooms as well as lackluster service. read more

There was a cycling competition around there this weekend and my friends and I ate there on saturday night and then sunday during lunch. The food was fantastic (Some of the best salmon sashimi we've had and one heck of an unagi plate that's set over grilled onions!) and the service was awesome too! If you go here and you don't have a huge party, try to sit at the sushi bar because one of the coolest people/chefs ever, James, will entertain you and give you some of the best foods and humorous service. When I arrived the hostesses seemed discombobulated and flustered even though the restaurant was more than half empty. Once I was seated it seemed like they were ignoring me. This annoyed me at first, but then I remembered I was looking exceptionally good tonight so they were probably just shy :). I had the baked lobster roll and a side of gyoza... it was actually really good... well worth it! On top of that one of the chefs offered a complimentary salmon skin, which was also very good! All in all, I had a large sake, hot tea, gyoza, and a roll for under $30 (including tip) so not a bad deal. Only thing keeping this from 5 stars is a little more training for the staff. Decided to give this place a try, and I got the Salmon and Scallop roll, and the Philadelphia roll. I got both due to the happy hour discount, bogo regular rolls 5-7pm. They tasted fine, but they were HUGE pieces. Some people would think this is good, but it was bad since they were just stuffed with the spicy scallop mix or cream cheese. It wasn't a good ratio of fish to other ingredients, and it wasn't very creative. Anyways, 2 stars is due to the piece of beard hair I found in my roll. read more
