I've been eating at Dong Nai for over 12 years, yes 12 years, about once a week. It was one of the first places I went to after moving to town. Never any issues until yesterday... My wife and I came in at 3pm, it was slow, and we usually get great service. We were seated and ordered our pho per usual. It came out in the right amount of time but mine was different, the noodles were badly overcooked and soggy, almost like porridge. "Nope, this one bowl of soup has to go back." It was inedible, the first time ever...it wasn't even close to being acceptable. I mention this to my server, a new kid, and asked him for another bowl because the pho i had was so poor. He looked at the bowl and said "no" and walked away. Crazy. I kept calm and mentioned this to the manager. He then says "not a single customer, all day, has had that issue, i'll fix it but i just want to let you know." By this time I'm considering walking out, the nerve of these guys... They scream into the kitchen, and begin mocking me in Vietnamese while bussing the other tables. I understood what they were saying and hence the one star rating. They likely didn't think I understood, as I am half Vietnamese and don't look like I would understand. What was once a favorite affordable lunch spot for over 12 years is now simply unacceptable. I've never sent anything back here, but if I do, I expect to be treated like a good paying customer and not mocked by the staff. The replacement pho was not as I had originally ordered, I gave them a second chance and they brought out the wrong soup. I give up on this place and so should you. read more

I've been going here for over 3 years and the food and sweet staff working here has been consistently great! Definitely come here for the vietnamese food, especially the spicy beef pho ( bun bo hue) and the grilled pork rice plate. This is one of the last authentic vietnamese places that aren't attempting to be instagram trendy or "elevated" to up sell. This place has fair prices and tastes just like what i grew up on. We were really happy with our visit to Dong Nai for a Friday Lunch. The Pho was both fragrant and delicious, and tasted freshly prepared - the beef rib served in the soup was tender and terrific. There was a lot less fat than found at other shops in town that don't seem to ever trim their meat. Our Vermicelli with pork was also fantastic. The serving team was excellent, and seemed genuinely interested in whether we enjoyed our lunch. That's something increasingly rare in Austin. If you're craving Vietnamese food, and you haven't tried Dong Nai, it's worth your time. Parking is easy, and while the restaurant isn't glamorous, it's very clean. I stopped in here for lunch one day and I loved every bite! I ordered the Vermicelli with pork charcoal and dong nai egg roll. The entire bowl was packed with flavor. When you are served they also bring some stuff to pour on, which I did. It is good and adds to the flavors of the vermicelli. The egg roll was perfectly fried and crispy. It was some of the best vermicelli I have ever had! I would give this 5 stars if the service had been a bit better. They seemed to maybe be a bit short staffed and I seemed to have to wait a bit to get my check. There were only 2 guys working the front - host, waiting tables, take out orders and ringing up the checks. It wasn't a huge deal or anything, but that would be my area of improvement for them to get their 5th star from me. Don't ask me about the chinese side of the menu. That is where the less intelligent folks look. I come here for pho and bun (vermicelli bowls). If you stick with the Vietnamese food....you will be happy. Plain Jane on the inside, nice wait staff (all family), and the service is quick. Brittnie and I went there for lunch today. We were in and out within an hour and for under twenty bucks. If you know what's what, this is your hungover destination. This pho has divine qualities that will fuck your hangover in the butt. My friend claims this is his favorite pho place in Austin so we went here on a Thursday night around 9:30 pm. There were three or four other parties including us; seems like a good crowd for that time. The prices are fair for Austin pho restaurants. The P13, a huge bowl of fried tofu and vegetable pho, was $7.25. The broth was tasty but I've eaten at PhoNatic soooo much that I'm used to PhoNatic broth. The waitress brought out a big plate of condiments including limes, mung beans, basil, and jalapenos. My friend and I both love condiments so the friendly waitress offered to bring us another plate. The second plate was even bigger. There were like six bunches of basil, my favorite pho condiment of all. The waitstaff constantly refilled our water glasses. We stayed there a little past their 10 pm closing time and they did not rush us. The waitstaff was very friendly. Their menu also has Chinese dishes. Dong Nai is located in a huge shopping center with Target, Tomlinson's Feed and Pets, Souper Salad, and more. It sits on an island in that huge shopping center. My new favorite Vietnamese noodle restaurant in this part of town! Maybe I'm just thrilled that I found a place close to home that's similar in cost/quality to some of my favs in North Austin. But whatever the reason, I'm excited nonetheless. I just had a bowl of pho with steak, tendon and tripe for $5.75 which is sooo much more reasonably priced than my other pho option near my house (Hai Ky). Not to say Hai Ky's food isn't as good, but when you factor in cost, Dong Nai gets the extra star. Remodeled dining area, FULL BAR finally some alcohol here, but most importantly... the food! I have been overlooking this place for some time now to my chagrin! Passing it often, I keep thinking I should give it a try and finally did this week and was disappointed; not in the food but for not going there sooner. Loving Pho bowls, they had a really good beef broth bowl that was really tasty, #26 for those interested. The broth was rich and very flavorful and all the fresh ingredients that came with it were wonderful. I ordered the large and it was huge so I had plenty the next day. First of all, when you walk in there's a very funny smell that never ended up going away. Not a very pleasant smell. My gf and I were excited about the boba smoothies but then were let down quite badly. The tapioca pearls were hard and tasted of cardboard. The service was horrible. The young guy waiting on us was very friendly and felt bad and apologized for it taking so long but they still could step up their game. We had two servers and they still couldn't get it right. Pho usually takes a short time to get out, but not this time! #28 and #25 were what we decided to order. I give the PHO 4 STARS and the rest 2. They did take our boba off the check so that was nice. First of all - can someone please dis-assemble that door chime - ding, ding, ding, dong, ding, ding, dong, ding - every.two.seconds - this becomes rather annoying really quickly... Tasty, succulent pho served up by people who are genuinely glad you're there. Pricing is quite moderate and proper Covid precautions are observed. My "small" bowl of pho made me wonder just how big the "large" bowl is! The broth was quite savory and tasty with a great mouth feel and not too salty either. The steak and meatballs were pretty standard which is just fine, the rice noodles were hot and done just right. Lacked a bit of sauce anf some good mixing but it was tasty and had lots of ingredients. also a very large serving. Enough for two people with an appetizer. The deep fried cream cheese dumplings were a delicious surprise. Being asian i rarely order fried wontons especially filled with cream cheese, its not particularly tradition asian food. Starting I would like to say the attentive polite friendly staff deserve five stars. They were so sweet and on top of *everything*. Next, the pricing here is fantastic. Today, I ordered what is described as your general banh mi sandwich. Reader, this sandwich was at least 18" long!! It was packed and taped in paper with the wet condiments and herbs on the side so thoughtfully. The only thing I might change is including some kewpie mayo and/or Sriracha without request. I had generously sized grilled pork summer rolls,really delicious if the peanut sauce was a little too sweet. My hot and sour soup generally I would not have ordered this on a hot day but it was recommended in another yelp review) had the perfect consistency, I wish it had been more sour- it leaned on the sweet side. Decided on a to go order for dinner. Here the lunch specials range from $11-$15 depending on your protein. They come with soup and an eggroll; they're really the usual suspects. I ordered the shrimp "spicy basil" option and added broccoli. Generous portions of everything except for anything at all spicy or even one leaf of basil. Almost thinking that we misunderstood each other but I did point to the item 3 times while asking questions. They don't gouge you for the little things like crab rangoons or Coca-Cola products which was so refreshing. Added bonus, they're right by the Tesla supercharger station, the excellent local pet store Tomlinsons, as well as Target and Strait Music. I could tell by the guests coming in and out that this was a regular spot for them with beloved menu items. I always crave pho when I'm hungover but all the really good places are all the way up North so I'm never able to eat it because obviously I'm not going to drive that far when I'm feeling like poop. I yelped pho places in South Austin and this place came up so I decided to give it a try (Thank you Yelpers). The pho was REALLY good! You can always tell good pho from bad by the amount of grease in the broth and the broth at this place was extremely clear and tasted really yummy! My boyfriend even told me that he thought this pho was the best he has ever had. The reason for the four stars instead of five is because it took a REALLY long time for the food to come out and there was only person who was doing everything from the seating to the busing to the serving. I'm afraid that I might have some sort of maggots or something inside of me because this fly has white puss in it's stomach if you haven't noticed in the photo. I let both the waitress and waiter know about the situation and they both acted un sympathetic about the situation and as if it wasn't a big deal. A good spot for a quick bowl of pho (beef or chicken broths) or bun. They've cleaned this place up from prior incarnations. Gone are the booths (now it's just tables). It's not the best but it's a pretty solid meal. Note on the chargrilled pork for the bun. It seems like it's a wetter type of pork (possibly pan cooked?) and not the drier grilled meats I'm used to for bun. Still good, but different. Eggrolls are a solid plus too. read more
