This place has to be the worst Vietnamese food I have ever had. This is like a bad Chinese buffet pretending to be Vietnamese restaurant. I and a friend ordered the vermicelli with grilled meat and an egg roll (bun thit nuong). The dish literally means in Vietnamese grilled meat with noodles but it tasted like the beef broccoli sauce on chicken with rice noodles. The meat wasn't grilled, it was cooked in a wok or something. They used big mac lettuce and no sprouts. They couldn't make the fish sauce correctly. It had non of that tartness from lime or vinegar. Also we had spring rolls and they used the yellow big mac lettuce too. The wait staff didn't know much about Vietnamese cuisine. The waiter was like an Asian guy from Russia and wouldn't know what Vietnamese food if it hit him in the face.. I barely touched the food and I was pretty hungry, and I didn't take it home. I told him I am Vietnamese and what they were serving was an embarrassment to Vietnamese food and culture. They need to take any references of Vietnamese food off their sign. Yeah, I felt bad I was harsh with their food but you got no right saying you're serving Vietnamese food when that shit is shitty Chinese buffet shit. I come from immigrants. We don't waste shit and I didn't want to eat the shit or take it home. I suggest trying pho please on Riverside and 35. It isn't the best bun thit nuong I've had. Excellent beef pho with generous amounts of meat in an aromatic, smoky broth. Bun Bo Hue, special of the day, was ok but the stock was a bit thin. The third diner had some kind of chicken and rice dish that came with a sweetened fish sauce and she ate half and happily took the rest home. All at more than fair prices. The reasons it doesn't score higher are first, the very haphazard service and second, the very uncomfortable banquettes that are built for much smaller folk than average Texans. You can solve the first by insisting on a table. The second is probably a matter of short staffing. What was annoying is that our three dishes came out at three different times, and folks who arrived after we did were served before. I don't think there is any agenda to that, just poor organization in the kitchen. That said, the food is more than good and I plan to return. read more

Sorry to say after I ordered out a Pho dish and had it for two meals, my stomach hurt immediately both times. They do give an incredible amount of food, probably more than any other place I've ordered Pho, but the broth was also actually quite greasy as well. I stumbled on this little place by accident and boy, I lucked out the menu had so many variety of noodles, rice, meat and seafood dishes, I actually was overwhelmed but in a good way. Ordered Muschu combination and the pho fried tofu and vegetable dish (which by the had extra basil, limes, jalapenos, mung beans) with the Vietnamese egg rolls it was delicious! I would give 6 stars if I could. Attentive waitress excellent meal.....and it is a cozy small place not fancy, very casual and even reasonable in price but plenty of food not by all means portions that is small but in fact a lot of food to fill you up had to ask for container for my leftovers which was a lot of food to take home. Parking is not a problem so you can actually find a quick spot located off south Lamar and Ben White intersection near Strait music. Highly recommend this location for Vietnamese dining and they also have Chinese dishes here too so you have a large variety of both area countries. Wow I'm so glad I stumbled across this restaurant. It's in the same plaza as the dollar store and Target. Huge authentic menu with pork, shrimp, or chicken with rice or vermecellin(bun) with steamed egg cake and fried spring rolls. The fried spring rolls are to die for here, soooooo good. You can get an order of 4 of them under Appetizers and they come cut up into sections with leaves of green romaine lettuce and cucumber and sweet and sour sauce to wrap them in...very good. The soups here are incredible. I've had the one with BBQ pork, fish balls, shrimp, and vermicelli noodles. Came with bok choy, bean sprouts, lime, and jalapeño. Broth was very good. The lemongrass shrimp with vermicelli was incredible too!!!! Yum! Added some Sambal hot chili paste to it to liven it up. There's a Chinese menu in addition to Vietnamese. The lunch and dinner specials come with rice and hot and sour, egg drop, or wonton soup. Good deals at $8-10/special. I tried the sweet and sour shrimp and it was heaven! Will try lemon chicken and Szechuan dishes one day! Definitely my go-to spot for authentic Vietnamese and Chinese food now. They have lots of Americanized Chinese dishes but the chef is talented so I would bet money that their dishes would come out yummy despite not being super authentic like Hong Kong style authentic. I would definitely try Kung Pao or Cashew Chicken here. They have homemade lemonade and Thai iced tea too. I noticed on the blackboard inside the restaurant by the kitchen door they have innovative dishes like Pho Rib and stir fried Ribs in sweet sauce too. Their interior is decent enough to sit in. The seats aren't super fancy but the interior seems comfortable enough, with a mix of tables and booths. Red is the color inside and it's appealing to the eye. It's not as good as back in the bay area in CA, but a runner up. I like that they use the wrapper that's crispy yet slightly stuck to your teeth good. Filling is decent. *the decent -vermicelli bowl: large portions even for someone like me who can eat a lot. The fish sauce and ingredients were on par. The only downfall was the "grilled" meat that it's supposed to be. It's not grilled yet rather stir fried or something.. If it was grilled, it be even better. Great service, everyone is really friendly but the food doesn't compare to my regular spots of tan my or sunflower. I got the vermicelli bowl with tofu and lemongrass with a side of peanut sauce. The noodles came out and it was a cold dish, I'm used to it being warm in a lemongrassy soy sauce (comparing it to tan my). Also, the tofu wasn't as flavorful and the whereas I get brocolli, carrots and onion here the bowl came with shredded lettuce, cucumber, bean sprouts, and carrots. Also, the lettuce, cucumbers and bean sprouts were underneath the noodles and when it came to mixing everything it was difficult and messy as the noodles has clumped together. The pho and spring rolls were pretty damn good. Especially with he tasty peanut sauce. I'd even go as far as saying the best Pho in South Austin. The staff was over the top friendly, even asked if we wanted more broth in our soup. They gave a generous portion of noddles and veggies. The Thai tea was huge and delicious. It feels like I'm caught in a batting slump with cheap and great Asian places lately. There was nothing bad about his place, but nothing that made me want to turn cartwheels on the floor either. Two of us shared a Pho Tai, egg rolls, hot & sour soup, sesame chicken, and just for the hell of it, scallops in garlic sauce. For me, ordering scallops in a casual Asian place is a foolish pleasure like playing the lotto, sometimes there's a payoff. Not today. The pho was decent, but I had to de-stem my mint after chewing them, usually a sign that they're ready for assisted-living. The egg rolls and hot & sour were good. The sesame chicken and scallops were less than stellar. I understand why logical yelpers advise against doing Chinese in a Vietnamese place, but if restaurants don't want to exert themselves over a secondary cuisine, then don't offer it. The service was cool and the place was okay, and it's fun seeing more and more Yelp stickers on doors. With water and tip, we got out of there for $35. I don't know--more than a "meh" but less than four-stars. A-OK doesn't seem quite right either, maybe more like a B-OK. read more

There are three types of Vietnamese restaurants in my opinion. #1 the pho restaurant #2 the banh mi restaurant #3 the bun restaurant Dong Nai is my go to #3 choice if I'm in the area. The pho here, although not bad, just doesn't satisfy me like Pho Dan does. Sadly, they have no banh mi. The bun is by leaps and bounds, easily some of the best in Austin. This leads us back the my subtle reference to 7D. The bun here, first off, is enough for two people! It's massive and fresh! The pork on the 7D is delicious and succulent. While most places say 'Lemongrass Pork' and deliver a soy drenched mess, Dong Nai delivers on that lemongrass flavor. Accompanied by a plethora or fresh crisp vegetables, to include shredded carrot, bean sprouts, lettuce, and cilantro, this bowl of noodle love is sure to please. On a side note. I had always been weary of how quickly their spring rolls came out pf the kitchen, which led me to believe they were premade. This has always prevented me from ordering them, but my craving during my last visit got the better of me and I found myself ordering them. Wow...that's what I get for assuming! Well, I've never had truly fabulous Vietnamese food in the States... never lived in the right place, I guess. So we're operating on shaky ground. However, I do have a solid gold reference point for what good pho should be thanks to the Vietnamese neighborhood in Paris. So, is this place that good? No, but are you surprised? Me neither. And that's fine. You generally can't go around expecting the pinnacle of taste and authenticity at all times unless you live somewhere like London or San Francisco. All that aside, I like this restaurant. A lot! The staff are nice, if a little timid, and the pho is good. Maitre D. has ordered some more adventurous things with very mixed results, but like I said -- I'm out of my element when we start ordering non-pho things. For what it's worth, I like what I get. They always bring out plenty of basil, mint, bean sprouts, chilies and lime, so it's pretty hard to go wrong in my book. Sometimes the chicken can get a little dry, but that probably has a lot more to do with the insistence on white meat than with anything else. The bottom line: Huge portions for cheap, and amusingly cheesy surrounds. I find the TV a bit distracting, but oh, well. Based on my experience in Paris, I feel like there must be better Vietnamese food in Austin, but I haven't found it just yet. If I do, expect an update on this review and a lower rating. Come hungry, and you shouldn't be disappointed. Just know that I'd give it 3.5 stars if Yelp would allow it! read more
