Dong Nai is the spot! A hidden gem in Austin, serving delicious and authentic Vietnamese food. I discovered this establishment on New Year's Day, when my usual go-to Vietnamese restaurants were closed. And I'm so glad they were, leading me to this spot! The interior design of this restaurant has a "Mom and Pop" feel to it, and the food is absolutely amazing. I ordered the "Beef Rib" Pho (Absolutely amazing and highly recommend) and Pork Fried Egg Rolls. Both were authentic and absolutely mouth-watering delicious! This is one of several previous reviews. Last night was a very satisfying meal at Dong Nai. First time that I tried the spicy crispy honey beef, which unlike its Chinese counterpart, had lots of very fresh vegetables and quite a nice spicy sauce. Although the beef had more breading and less beef than I like, it was crispy and the dish was very good. I also tried something new to me, the fried egg tofu appetizer. It was a delightful mix of tofu and egg, very custardy, nicely fried. Third item was bun grilled pork vermicelli, which was OK, but not their strongest offering. Dong Nai is a great restaurant. The staff are friendly and knowledgeable, and the food is delicious. I almost always order Rare Steaj Pho from Vietnamese restaurants, but I changed my mind and asked if I could order the Pork chop instead. Unfortunately, they were out of pork chop, so I ordered the grilled chicken. This was so yummy! The pork was juicy, not overcooked, and the fish sauce was the perfect compliment. I ended up taking a little home, and even reheated it was great! I also ordered Tofu Spring rolls which were nice and long, and came with a yummy peanut sauce. The ambiance was nice. Awful experience. Ordered during lunch time for pick up- missing food items and/or any food with shrimp (despite shrimp cleared denoted on receipt) was either missing or made with chicken. Mistakes acknowledge on first call w/agreement to determine refund amount and for them to call back. Each subsequent call (to them btw) the story changed - bring food back, some tbd refund, 1/2 refund, can't speak to a manager (left for day, on vacation, etc). Simply uncalled for, rude and obnoxious behavior. Of the food we did receive- mediocre at best. Called BBB and credit card company for them to sort. We've loved this place for years. It went through some hard times around Covid, but really turned it around and did a full revamp of the dining room a few years ago. The food is fresh and we great. Had lunch here with a group and we all really really loved the food. The traditional spring rolls for an appetizer were SO good- crispy, hot, and with so much great flavor and vegetables. All of the main dishes we ordered were also so good with such huge portions. I got a vermicelli bowl with chicken and egg rolls, and it was amazing. The service was also amazing, as our server was attentive and routinely check in. The natural lighting also makes this place very peaceful to dine in. Had an amazing bowl of pho here. I ordered the Dong Nai special which came with tender brisket, filet, and a perfectly cooked soy marinated egg. LOVED. The broth is legit! You know it comes down to the flavor of the pho broth and theirs is authentic and very tasty. They have gluten free egg rolls!! I've been coming to Dong Nai occasionally for a few years. It wasn't a top 3 Pho spot for me in Austin but a "good" choice if I was around the area for lunch that was convenient given the ample parking in the large target parking lot + quick service that was used to bussing in folks coming in for a quick lunch break. They've redone the interior with a fresh new buildout and the ambiance today is a lot cleaner than the hole-in-the-wall vibes of old. Can't argue with clean new floors, fixtures, tables, and menus while still maintaining that strong immigrant efficiency. I wasn't a frequent diner but I also feel as if they've improved the quality of the food itself since I was last there. Whereas before I would not have pegged them in the "Top" pho list of Austin, their house special - the Dong Nai - which includes a fried soybean roll (which feels more Taiwanese than Vietnamese but delicious is delicious!) is actually insanely good. We often also get the shumai appetizer which is a solid B for Austin and what you end up with is a pretty tasty meal. I still can't imagine coming to Dong Nai for dinner, but I think the way they've stepped up their entire game over the past few years is memorable and I may find myself coming here for lunch much more often. read more

Adding a star to this updated review. The place has been renovated and have gotten a menu refresher as well, Dong nai offers northern Vietnamese styled pho. (Donut breadstick) some entrees include it but you can also request it on the side. This isn't on the menu but just an insider scoop! It's $4/stick which is a bit hefty but it's freshly made and worth it cause you can't get it else where in this area. Really excited to have this because my daughter loves these savory, umami sticks of dough. They're good alone or soaking in your pho. The service is on point. Someone is always watching to see if some attention or service is needed. The pho this time was good. The broth is clear and tasty. The herbs are fresh and clean. meat... no complaints. Food was great and the service was decent. However, the prices online don't match what they charge in person, and that was disappointing. Before I came, I checked the restaurant's online menu and saw the rice short ribs plate listed for $14, edamame for $6, and tea for $2 -- so I was expecting a total around $22 before tax and tip. When I got the bill, my total before tip was $34 because the rice short ribs alone were $22. I asked the waitress about it, and she apologized and said the online prices were more than two years old but she'd let the manager know. Later she told me the manager said they'd updated the prices online two days ago and were sorry but they didn't offer to match the listed prices or do anything to make it right. The food itself was very good, but it's the principle restaurants should make sure their posted menus reflect the actual prices. read more

I had the yellow curry chicken and my husband had the short rib pho, which of course I tried. Our favorite was the egg roll appetizer! They came with all the fixings to roll them in a lettuce leaf, shredded carrots, cucumber slices and fish sauce to dip it in! Absolutely delicious! Chef's kiss! My least favorite item we ordered was the garlic chili edamame. It wasn't very flavorful and was somewhat over steamed/cooked. Restaurant was clean, service was great and prompt. I got this for takeout through an app and I was very impressed! I got the beef meatball pho and the portion size was great. The broth was reallly good. It was my first pho in Austin and I would definitely get it again. They do charge 1.20 for hoisin which I was a little annoyed about especially because the bean sprouts came with a hoisin sauce already which I did not know.
