It feels like I'm caught in a batting slump with cheap and great Asian places lately. There was nothing bad about his place, but nothing that made me want to turn cartwheels on the floor either. Two of us shared a Pho Tai, egg rolls, hot & sour soup, sesame chicken, and just for the hell of it, scallops in garlic sauce. For me, ordering scallops in a casual Asian place is a foolish pleasure like playing the lotto, sometimes there's a payoff. Not today. The pho was decent, but I had to de-stem my mint after chewing them, usually a sign that they're ready for assisted-living. The egg rolls and hot & sour were good. The sesame chicken and scallops were less than stellar. I understand why logical yelpers advise against doing Chinese in a Vietnamese place, but if restaurants don't want to exert themselves over a secondary cuisine, then don't offer it. The service was cool and the place was okay, and it's fun seeing more and more Yelp stickers on doors. With water and tip, we got out of there for $35. I don't know--more than a "meh" but less than four-stars. A-OK doesn't seem quite right either, maybe more like a B-OK. read more

Took our family out to eat here... The pan fried noodles were incredible, also had a chicken dish that was very good, tofu plate was good and the noodle bowls were very good as well. Did find the noodle bowl a little bland, but thank goodness for fish sauce :) We all were very impressed with the food, the service was great, atmosphere is old, but if your just wanting great food, I would highly recommend it! read more

There are three types of Vietnamese restaurants in my opinion. #1 the pho restaurant #2 the banh mi restaurant #3 the bun restaurant Dong Nai is my go to #3 choice if I'm in the area. The pho here, although not bad, just doesn't satisfy me like Pho Dan does. Sadly, they have no banh mi. The bun is by leaps and bounds, easily some of the best in Austin. This leads us back the my subtle reference to 7D. The bun here, first off, is enough for two people! It's massive and fresh! The pork on the 7D is delicious and succulent. While most places say 'Lemongrass Pork' and deliver a soy drenched mess, Dong Nai delivers on that lemongrass flavor. Accompanied by a plethora or fresh crisp vegetables, to include shredded carrot, bean sprouts, lettuce, and cilantro, this bowl of noodle love is sure to please. On a side note. I had always been weary of how quickly their spring rolls came out pf the kitchen, which led me to believe they were premade. This has always prevented me from ordering them, but my craving during my last visit got the better of me and I found myself ordering them. Wow...that's what I get for assuming! Well, I've never had truly fabulous Vietnamese food in the States... never lived in the right place, I guess. So we're operating on shaky ground. However, I do have a solid gold reference point for what good pho should be thanks to the Vietnamese neighborhood in Paris. So, is this place that good? No, but are you surprised? Me neither. And that's fine. You generally can't go around expecting the pinnacle of taste and authenticity at all times unless you live somewhere like London or San Francisco. All that aside, I like this restaurant. A lot! The staff are nice, if a little timid, and the pho is good. Maitre D. has ordered some more adventurous things with very mixed results, but like I said -- I'm out of my element when we start ordering non-pho things. For what it's worth, I like what I get. They always bring out plenty of basil, mint, bean sprouts, chilies and lime, so it's pretty hard to go wrong in my book. Sometimes the chicken can get a little dry, but that probably has a lot more to do with the insistence on white meat than with anything else. The bottom line: Huge portions for cheap, and amusingly cheesy surrounds. I find the TV a bit distracting, but oh, well. Based on my experience in Paris, I feel like there must be better Vietnamese food in Austin, but I haven't found it just yet. If I do, expect an update on this review and a lower rating. Driving around town today, I realized that I had to take action if I wanted to combat my sore throat/hangover combo - brutal! Pho seemed like the natural solution, so I swung by Dong Nai and placed a to-go order. Pho to go, you might ask? I'd never done it either, but was pretty darn pleased! I ordered the pho with beef and meatballs, which they packed up nicely. All of the fillings (meat included) were in a large to-go container and they didn't skimp at all. Tons of mint, cilantro, bean sprouts...delish. The broth itself was packed separately in a little soup container. After eating half of it (plus one spring roll), I can say that I'm stuffed and smiling. My headache's gone and the sore throat's a little less evil than before. Thank you, Dong Nai! (Incidentally, I'll probably stick with this place as a take-out. The inside is rather sparse and, although that's not particularly negative, sometimes it's nice to eat my pho while sitting on my sofa in my loungewear.) read more

Mmm...pho. The vegetable pho with fried tofu is so freakin' good. CHOCK full of yummy, fresh veggies, and that's not even counting the plate of pho fixins that comes with the bowl. It's filling and cheap as hell. There's also a whole page of lunch specials for under $5. Under $5, people!! The cheese wontons are very yummy as well, and they don't have that yucky faux crab stuff in them either. I've read the reviews of this place--after I ate there today. ... That makes me think I need to give it another try. i will. At some point. Just not right away. Besides, Hao Hao is closer to home. I had Pho. It was just okay. My friend got some sort of vermicelli and hers looked much more appetizing than mine was. I even stole a bite of hers. It was good. Service was fine. Nothing stellar, but not horrible, either. Young kids (of owners? workers?) were sitting at a table nearby. They were distracting to us and to the servers. The older couple (probably the owners?) sat quietly in the corner and rolled napkin after napkin of silverware. it was very cheap--both our lunches totaled only $14. I figure I'll give it another chance. But I think one of you folks may have to convince me to try it again. Last night. I was really wanting some American food. But then I got the guilt trip laid down on me. "I haven't had noodles for years!" "Uh, Wok On FIre Tuesday and with your friend Jenny on Wednesday." Yes, see it's been forever!" "I really want to try Wings To Go again. They have those flavored chicken wings. You sort of like them." "OK. But you never get me noodles. Never." (sad face) "OK, I think I know of a Vietnamese noodle place" "No let's just have Chicken wings." And by that time Wings To Go has long passed by and I'd need to circle around the block to return. But I have to say, Dong-Nai is another really convenient spot to get my wife some noodles! She has been warming up to the Vietnamese Pho this past year in the U.S. since it's exponentially more convenient to find than Chinese noodles. As for myself, I am just sick to death of noodles! I have noodles coming out of my ears. I don't think I have had any really bad Pho (I am just kind of tired of it), anywhere. But I must say Dong-Nai's meat and shrimp inside were pleasantly fresher than I have ever experienced. And I liked their selections of sauces at the table. Several types of chili sauce, hot mustard, duck sauce etc . . . The soup was tasty and I made it extra spicy. The bokchoy inside was good and fresh as well. The wife loved her Pho; she had the same selection as me. And she even ordered an egg drop soup on the side. "Honey, don't you want something else? You have soup coming with the noodles." "Noodles are noodles and soup is soup!" "Okay!" Don't ever argue with the logic of Chinese woman. You won't win! I also tried the egg rolls. I ordered two and glad I did. They are pretty skinny, but tasty! There was one other group while we were in there. I can't help but share what was overheard. An apparently technically challenged lady asking her friend about computers. She asked "Is a Mac a PC or is a Mac a Dell?" I wanted to ROTFL but restrained myself. This place has really gone down hill - specifcally for the Pho. The noodles are now cooked ahead of time causing them to become one big clump of nastiness, there's something different with the broth that makes it super oily and the meat... Pho is one of my favorite things. Really, it is! I can only comment on the Pho at Dong Nai as that's all I've ever had, but man is it tasty. I always get it with plain old eye of the round or whatever it is and it's my Vietnamese restaurant yardstick. Dong Nai does it up right. The broth is rich, and deep in flavor. The meat is perfectly cooked in the broth and I always have enough basil, sprouts and jalepenos to add to my soup to make it the way I like it. The last time I went, I also ordered fried wontons. I'm pretty sure I ate all of them because I am disgusting and no one that was with me eats pork (damn you Karla and Angus for making me fat). The bottom line is that Dong Nai sure isn't the prettiest restaurant in town, but they serve some of the best pho and some damned tasty wontons as well, and all for a dirt cheap price. I've been here a few times because it's conveniently located across from one of my favorite stores Target) and work. I've ordered spring rolls and most recently, the bahn mi. The bahn mi's bread was good. It was a good size portion, and the price was right (about $7). I've stumbled across far too many $10+ bahn mis in Austin, and it makes me miss Houston where you could score a great one for $5 max. Anyway, this was the closest in size (a real footlong) and it's definitely satisfying for when you're hungry. The meat portion was decent (I ordered the grilled pork and it was delicious.) the only downside was aside from the meat, it was bland. I added all of the pickled carrots and cilantro and it still needed a bit more flavor or a kick. Perhaps the mayo was sparingly used? I also didn't get jalapeños in mine. I will definitely order again when I'm hungry, but I'll definitely ask for more jalapeños and cucumber this time. The spring rolls are solid IMO. read more

I have to give kudos to Yelp search. Last night I had a craving for bun in a bad way. Luckily, Dong Nai is on my way home. Too bad the menu is nowhere to be found online. I took a chance and decided to drop in, place and order and wait. The place was pretty empty and I was a tab bit worried, but I thought back to those good reviews and waited patiently for my order. It was ready in less than 10 minutes and I was out the door. I ended up with 3 orders of bun, 1 with grilled pork and the other with eggrolls and pork. They were hot, fresh and delicious. The fish sauce was perfect, not too oily or smelly. For an appetizer I tried the squid with black peppercorn. The boys raved on the taste. Seriously, it was amazing. Still hot and perfectly fried. I will be trying this out as a dinner portion next time. Dong Nai is now on the "bun list." It' s a small, honorable list and I'm happy to add them to it. read more

I'm sitting here eating squid with black peppercorn and chicken pho and DAM it is tasty! The chicken is white breast meat, the broth is flavorful with plenty of yummy fixins, and the squid is amazing, with a light batter thats even good as a to-go order. I said vegetarian very specifically while placing my order. He heard it. Nodded his head. I asked, "Is the soup vegetarian?" He said, "Yeah it is." I asked, "Was it cooked in chicken broth?" He said, "No its not." Ordered the hot and sour soup. Had a few spoons and already knew there was something funky with it. Probably the chicken stock it was cooked in! Ordered the Kung Pao Tofu. Vanilla : Ice Cream :: Kung Pao Tofu : Chinese Food. Disgusting. Sauce was horrible. Vegetables overcooked. Everything looked a weird orange colour. I don't know if they were paying some homage to the longhorns in that dish, or trying to match the shirt I was wearing. Ahh, there's an egg roll!! They couldn't possibly screw that up, can they? Took a bite and had to spit it out. Pork or chicken in my egg roll. I ask the waiter and he goes, "Oh yeah! There is meat in the eggroll." No sorry. No you don't have to pay. No nothing. Dong Nai is located in a really undesirable looking strip mall. Admittedly (and unfortunately), I never went in because of the shopping center's gritty, unkempt appearance. I was robbing nobody but myself! (/end melodrama) Dong Nai is pretty rad. I ordered the tofu spring rolls for my appetizer and the lemongrass tofu. The interior is nice enough - as in it's not decorated enough to be kitschy/stuffy/stereotypical, and not bare enough to make you think you're in a workplace cafeteria. It's a decent in-between. Warm, and laid back. The staff is quick, attentive, and very friendly. Always a plus. And my food was great. My only complaint is that my tofu spring rolls did not come with a sufficient amount of peanut sauce for my greedy self. Also, if you're a spicy-ophile like I am, although the menu notes "hot" items with a chili, it's really not that spicy. What else is noteworthy is that Dong Nai uses firm or extra firm tofu. It's not the soft tofu that most other places use - so the food feels a bit more filling/hearty. Of course, it's fried and not steamed or whatever. That said, sucks for me that I passed this place so much. But I shall make amends. read more

So the vermicelli is what I expected it to be and that was flavorful and filling! I ordered the dish to go and it was very hot and fresh when I came around to eating it. I get a very similar dish at another Vietnamese restaurant so I couldn't help but compare the two. I'd say it's a tie, but there are a couple things I personally could have done without here. I didnt like how much salad was in the dish (I'll order without next time) nor did I like the slices of cucumber they included. I also firmly believe the egg roll tasted exactly like a frozen kind I've had from Heb. They're competition has the egg rolls beat hands down. I am always looking for new Vietnamese food down in South Austin. I had NO IDEA this place existed until I read a random Yelp review about another spot. Asian fail. So I went here today and ordered a noodle soup (I ordered the wrong thing I wanted so I won't comment on it b/c I was biased by ordering the wrong thing) and also ordered Tom Rang Moui which was freaking good. My lunch partner had never had it and thought it was delicious too. Anyhow, it was a good first impression and I will be back. If you are South Austin, I will say (so far) Dong Nai is better than Blue Bamboo which is better than Pho Tai Son which is better than T&N cafe...in that order. read more

Wow! So good! Had the steak pho ir was seasoned to perfection very flavorful. Just right amount of noodles. Broth is delicious on its own but lots of condiments besides siracha to get the pho how you like it. Trust it's good on its own bowl is huge. Can't beat the price $7.95 for a huge portion of pho. As has been noted ad nauseum by many Yelpers, it's hard to find good Chinese food in Austin. Yesterday, my brother and I met for lunch here and it was definitely the best Chinese I've had in a long time. We split the sweet and sour chicken, and the garlic chicken. Both had large pieces of white meat that weren't gross or fatty. The sweet and sour had the sauce served on the side so you could sauce it to your preference. I also like that it included lots of onions, carrots and green bell pepper. The garlic chicken was incredibly flavorful with notes of lemongrass, ginger and garlic. The hot and sour soup was flavorful and satisfying, as was the egg roll. There are plenty of restaurants in Austin with good Vietnamese dishes, but I will be coming back to Dong Nai when I want good Chinese food. read more

I love love LOVE this place. I started coming here before it was called Dong Nai, before they even had a sign on the outside because it was within walking distance from my then-apartment. I got to know the owners (Vietnam transplants from the town of Dong Nai) and their children (their teenage daughter often waits tables inside). The Vietnamese food here is outstanding, I especially like the charcoal pork vermicelli bowl. The portions are huge and very fresh. I am addicted to bun (vermicelli) and have tried it all over Austin, and this place by far has my favorite. I have gotten the (Americanized) Chinese food here before, but I wasn't as impressed as I have been with the Vietnamese food. The portions were big, but I could taste the cornstarch texture in the glaze on my chicken. The interior is painted in primary colors, with a big screen TV smack dab in the middle of the dining room for distraction. I'll be honest: the only reason I came here was because I read on Yelp that they deliver. They don't. They stopped because they "don't have enough employees for it." Certainly not a good sign. I didn't get pho, but had the spring rolls and steak bites. Both were okay, but certainly not on par with the level of Vietnamese food you can get on North Lamar. The interior environment was a little scary. Almost moribund at primetime with some sketchy characters about the place. Pho review. We walked in to a completely empty restaurant for a quick lunch before heading to my parent's home out of town for mother's day. We sat in a booth, had water, ordered cheese rangoons, and pho tai (steak) for me and pho tai nam (steak and brisket) for mi amor. The rangoons were alright. If you're eating here, note that they don't provide a sauce for you because a sweet and sour sauce is already on the table. The pho came out shortly afterward. The broth was alright. It wasn't bad, but not nearly comparable to other pho I've had. The meat and noodles were both pretty tough, and it wasn't that great. I didn't see any pink in my steak at all, so I was kind of disappointed about that. Hence, my advice to anyone out there who is trying to find a decent pho restaurant in south Austin: look elsewhere. This place was packed for lunch... Which could mean two things... 1. It's poppin or 2. There's only one waitress working the entire restaurant. It was the ladder.... I mean don't get me wrong. The food was... alright. Probably the best Vietnamese food in South ATX (with decent pricing). But seriously.. ONE waitress for the entire restaurant! Lunch hour! Vietnamese food (pho, rice dishes, sandwiches) are super fast and do not require waiting over 30 minutes for food. One waitress who: took orders, did payments, bussed tables, and took the food from the kitchen to the customers. When we were trying to pay, I stood at the front and she came around to me 3 TIMES telling me "One moment" while she took care of other tables. PLEASE LET ME GO HOMEEEEEEE. Yes the service was sad and terrible. But the thing that made me feel bad rather than angry was that they had a "Now Hiring" sign on their door... so... It's not just them trying to be cheap and work around with one waitress... they are hiring. Please yelpers... help these poor people. read more

Dong Nai, while maybe not the place you take friends from out of town to in order to impress them, is very much the place you go to time after time in your own neighborhood. Their food is very fairly priced and tasty, and their service is fast. The decor is a bit on the blank side... it seems like the money for a lot of decorations went to getting a large screen TV to keep the kids happy, but it is a comfortable sort of place nonetheless. Their vegetarian options are plentiful and varied, and the portions are generous. I have tried every vegetarian option on their menu, and have loved them all. Their salt-and-pepper tofu is easily in the top 5 best tofu inventions of all time, alongside Veggie Heaven's "Protein 2000" or Wheatsville's "Popcorn Tofu". read more

Austin isn't exactly the best place for Asian food, but Dong Nai is decent fare. The atmosphere leaves a little to be desired, but the service was overall very friendly and speedy. I had the steak and meatball Pho and I enjoyed it. It really is a huge portion! The broth was very flavorful and not too oily, and I found the quality of the still-pink steak quite good. One downside was the spring rolls, which to be fair were very inexpensive, were obviously made earlier in the day and were pretty dry. The best Vietnamese restaurant I've tried in South Austin. If you live in South Austin, and you're trying to stay local, order take-out from Dong Nai! The food is very good. Very large portions! Vegetables are very fresh. Really great Pho. The Bun bowls are completely satisfying, but nothing special compared to places outside of South Austin. The staff is pleasant, but the ambiance and cleanliness of the restaurant needs a little extra T-L-C. However, with that said, this is a great place to order take-out, because the food is so good! Note to the restaurant: PERFECT THE SPRING ROLLS! I've had them on several occassions where they look dissholved, and the protein is low-grade! I still order them, though. As a Vietnamese person from Bolsa, Dong Nai is the most authentic Vietnamese food that I have had in Texas. That's why I think it may not be enjoyed by foreigners who aren't used to it. I am the same way with Italian food, since I prefer Olive Garden to the real deal. Anyways, if you want to eat what real Viets would eat than this is the place. I always get their hu tieu thap cam which is a seafood soup that has shrimp, fish balls, and chashu pork. My husband likes their pho dac biec. We also love their tom rang muoi (roasted shrimp with salt) which is not done the traditional way, but its very tasty. I notice a lot of people opt to get take out because the staff does not speak that much English but I enjoy watching them squabble and be their true fobby self. My husband and I always get a good laugh when we see Vietnamese people acting the same no matter what state they are in. read more

This place is nothing special to look at, but it's one of my favorite spots for Vietnamese. I CRAVE the pho. I'm not SUPER authentic or anything - so I usually just get the beef steak. My boyfriend is more adventurous and gets the one with the other bits. The broth is amazing - I think it's a miracle cure for whatever ails you. I'm usually too full (or tired of working with chopsticks and spoon) to finish a whole order. Also, you HAVE to try their Dong Nai eggrolls. OMG they are so delicious!!! Crispy wrappers and yummy filling...better than other places. I've had the vermicelli bowls, and those are good, too. (Especially, if it's the one with the Dong Nai eggrolls cut up in it!) I think the only thing I've had here that I didn't like was the Vietnamese coffee. I prefer Tan My's. I've never had any of the "Chinese" menu choices here...but why would you? I have a mild addiction to Vietnamese food, being from Houston. I can honestly saw I have YET to be disappointed with Dong Nai. Not only is their food FANTASTIC, the customer service is truly remarkable. Everyone is so kind and helpful. I typically get vietnamese eggrolls, Grilled Pork Vermacelli, Steak Pho... and a few more... but all are SO SAVORY!!! I also am very picky with Pho... If you want fresh, hot, inexpensive Thai food- go to Dong Nai. I come here at least once/ week for phó, and I am never disappointed. The broth is full of flavor, always hot. I usually get phò tai, which is beef. The meat is great, perfect proportion in the soup. The herbs are fresh, never old or wilted. My bf usually gets fried rice- he had always been satisfied with the flavor and amount. We have also had the steamed pork dumplings, bún, and some of the Chinese food. All was good, never any complaints. Ok, so the decor is a little outdated, but I rather have outdated decor and great food. The owner is very nice, super busy, and the wait staff is young, but very sweet. I highly recommend dong nai if you are looking to have authentic Thai food at a very reasonable price. read more

DELICIOUS, HEALTHY, AUTHENTIC, CHEAP. I have eaten Dong Nai food twice now and both times I have had the P12 (or P 13, can't remember), the TOFU AND VEGETABLE PHO SOUP. Usually I order something vegetarian or seemingly healthy and then try my friend's food only to discover that it really is better with meat. However this did not happen when I ate at the restaurant the first time and tried the duck pho ordered by my dining partner. Though the duck pho was good, I actually thought that the veggie pho with tofu was better: The tofu was fried but still soft and tender; the veggies were cooked but still crisp; noodles done perfectly just soft enough; fresh basil and cilantro a plenty. For the second time I am now eating Dong Nai, the same veggie tofu pho: It is just as good as a take home dish== the broth is delicious and all the add-ins are separate. I have a plentiful amount of noodles, bean sprouts, broccoli, tofu, mushroom, green bell peppers, green onions, an entire half of a lime, plus soy sauce, pepper sauce, and sweet plum sauce on the side. This dish could easily feed me twice and I don't stop eating early. Everything is fresh and delicious and cooked just enough to bring out the flavor and texture. My entire dish was $7.53 after tax, before tip. Beware, though this is a veggie dish it is served in beef broth. I've been here a few times, especially when I'm in need of a warm remedy during the winter months. Their Vietnamese cuisine is by far the best I've had in Austin, although it's never busy when I've been. No free refills on their canned sodas, but that's probably best for us all right? The owners should try and put some focus on the inside decor, as many people probably overlook this place based on the overly tacky "1980's called and want their cheap city mural paintings back". I asked for a vegetarian dish from the lunch special and received chicken in my soup. I was cool about it as I am about most mistakes. It happens when your vegetarian all the time so I can't be angry about it. Most places are really nice about it so I asked for more vegetables in my fried rice instead of a bowl of soup. The waiter said no and offered some steamed rice... with my fried rice. I canceled my order. Instead of management offering me something else to eat I sat with some friends and drank water instead of eating lunch skipping it that day all together. Mind. Blown. I get it that mistakes happen but this bad service brings me to Yep to give a bad review. I recommend going to one of the other hundred and fifty Vietnamese restaurants in Austin this one does not deserve my business any longer. read more
