Finally after years of trying I was able to sample the cheesesteak at this fine establishment. The wait was worth it, it was a perfectly balanced blend of meat, cheese and bread. Ok so I saw the article about Anthony Bourdain saying the best cheesesteak is from donkeys place in Camden and how it's a hidden gem. Warning. This is a long read! I apologize ahead time for my rant. I most definitely do not agree with him. Maybe because he's a celebrity, he might have gotten a jammed pack sandwich with the best of the best. Service was absolutely horrible. It could have been bad because the waitress doesn't give a rat ass or maybe she was having a bad day. But that's no excuse. We sit down and waitress comes up with an attitude and first thing she says "you want onions and cheese!?!". Well hello to you too, miss. Next she says "what you want to drink" with same attitude and when asked if they had fries, her answer was "not today!" with the same side of attitude. My friends and I relax and just shook off the nonsense with the waitress and we wait for our food. We wait.... 20 mins goes by and we're now wondering why our food was not coming out. It was not busy at all and they only serve 1 sandwich. Also, after we sat down, 3 other tables have sat down after us. Two of the those tables already received there sandwiches. Another 10 minutes goes by and another lady from the bar brings out 1 sandwich and says "who had no onions?". I reply back saying we ordered 3 and all with onions and cheese. At this point all 3 tables that came in after us received there food and 2 of the tables ate, paid, and left. Finally after 45 minutes of waiting, the waitress comes over stinking like a fresh cigarette and we get our food with no apologies or nothing. Sandwich was on a paper plate and seems to look decent. Taste wasn't anything great. All 3 sandwiches had more onions in them than meat. The meat they used is just the normal "Original Philly" cheesesteak meat. So nothing extraordinary with the meat. After, we go to pay, and the waitress then tried to charge for an extra drink. In conclusion, not impressed with the sandwich. I don't think the sandwich was worth $7.50. One of the worst experiences I've ever had. The owner or manager needs to pay a little more attention to their staff. read more

This is a strong 4.7 star place. The staff is friendly, the food is tasty, and the price is better than any cheese-steak place in Philly. My only disappointment is that it can get messy if you don't have much control over the sandwich. Also, there is no designated area to place an order. And then I discovered Donkey's Place in Camden. First visited Donkey's a couple years back along with a friend who raved about their sandwiches. He knew of the place since he was familiar with Camden. The service is at a small walk-up window in a building attached to Donkey's Bar. Well, my 2 friends and I took a small road trip to Camden to see what the big fuss was about the steak sandwiches from Donkey's place. We had heard of the legend of the steak covered in cheese, onions, on a poppyseed roll before, but decided to make the trip after it regained attention, once Anthony Bourdain televised his visit to the small hole in the wall. It is just that, a hole in a wall if I've ever seen one. Most people are intimidated by the neighborhood and the terrible reputation of the city of Camden. It's not in the belly of the beast of Camden, but if you're terrified of the ghetto, then you can get the sandwich from their Medford location. As for the experience, it's pretty simple, as everyone there is ordering one thing and that's the cheesesteak. It's thinly sliced steak, white American cheese, and a ton of onions on a poppyseed roll. They push out many sandwiches, as people flock in trying to catch a taste before they close or run out of bread. Which happened while we there. The sandwich was a good sandwich but it didn't change my life or anything. I liked the poppyseed roll, it was a twist and the onions did add great flavor, but I personally thought the sandwich had too many onions. Be prepared to wait a little longer than usual as, many people who follow Anthony Bourdain, are making the trek to try the cheesesteak. The place itself is s throwback to the old bar/grills, which were more common for me growing up. If your not into 40 year old grease, then this might not be the place for you. Stopped into Donkey's place before hitting the aquarium. A no frills unassuming spot with lots of vintage "stuff" randomly placed throughout. This vibe actually made me feel like there was a good cheesesteak in its way. It isn't served like the traditional cheesesteak though. It is served in a round poppy seed roll. The cheesesteak was bigger than I expected and the poppy seed roll was more enjoyable than I would've thought. Great sizes portion... The onions were on the thicker cut side and we're awesome. For spice lovers, they have chili paste and chili oil, both of which added the perfect burst of heat to the sandwiche. The fries were thin cut and crisp. Got some of the Best Damn Root Beer, which was possibly more delicious than Not Your Father's. Staff was very friendly and talked to us a couple times during our meal. Now usually with cheesesteaks they come all chopped up or in very thin slices. I prefer to actually taste the cheesesteak and enjoy the slices. Donkey's is different though, they serve you legit cut pieces of high quality steak. They have a flat top that is only used for making cheesesteaks, and cheesesteaks only. You can't create that seasoning of a grill anywhere else, and if you try, it will take you many years! The steak was juicy and the flavor profile was out of this world. The carmelized onions were delicious. I would top every sandwich with those onions if I could. I would have to put Donkey's at the top of my list of best cheesesteak. #1 used to belong to The Trainwreck Po Boy at Becks Cajun Cafe in Reading Terminal Market, but the cheesesteak for me is everything I want a cheesesteak to be.
