No frills small restaurant/bar that serves great cheesesteaks. This not so hidden gem of Nj is as good and as real as they come. They only serve a few items of food & you don't need much else. I got their famous cheesesteak and it was worth every penny & the long drive. Full of flavor, smothered in onions, I could have used more cheese but I will make sure to order extra next time.

This was a counter and bar location that served a cheesesteak, fries and dry rubbed wings, nothing else. There were a few tables in the back, but the bar was tight in the front. There were a lot of people taking out too. I enjoyed the slide show that was playing that showed people from around the world displaying their gear from the establishment. The diverse music was loud, which was a little surprising. I had the regular cheesesteak ($15) and an order of fries. The cheesesteak came with white American cheese and fried onions on a poppy seed kaiser. This was huge. The sandwich was packed with thin slices of steak. The steak was a little under seasoned, but it helped when cherry peppers were added. It made all the difference. The poppy seed kaiser roll was soft and held up everything inside. It was different but was tasty. The fries came out hot and paired nicely with the large cheesesteak. Will I go back? Probably.

Camden, New Jersey - a drive across the Delaware River ftom Philadelphia, PA via the really cool "Ben Franklin Bridge" took me to the home of the famous "Donkey's Place" in Camden, NJ for my 2nd visit since Jsnuary 3, 2024 ... "Donkey's Place" is named after the otiginal owner, the fighter "Leon Lewis" of the early 1940's and inspiration of the "Donkey's Place" ... "Leon's" nickname was "Donkey" for the power of his punch - with the power of a donkey's kick ... "Donkey's Place" is in its 3rd generation of ownership - "Donkey's" hard-working & smiling granddaughter ... "Donkey's Place" is famous for its enormous Philly steak on their special roll & and "Run-A-Way Bill" FAVORITE award winner since 2024 for the BIG Pholky steak, the smilin' staff and the atmosphere featuring souve irs abd a full bar ... today I met 2 couples plus local lady "Romona", as well as sharing smiles with "Team Donkey" - "Kelly", "Mel", "Rob" and the amazing lady working the grill (who's name I forgot to write down) ... "Team Liz & Chris" & "Team Brett & Erin" were both very interactive smile-sharing non-local customers who chose the barstool over a table like myself ... take-outs are quite common and on the first Saturday of each month (I have heard) they open at 7am and the line for their tasty-riffic Philly steak sandwich extends out the front door ... a "Run-A-Way Bill" highly recommended experience ... "Run-A-Way Bill" was here! - AGAIN 01.02.25

Donkey's Place is a staple in the city of Camden, NJ. Everyone has heard of this place except me. So you know I had to put an end to that. It gives saloon, cowboy vibes when you first walk in. T-shirts hanging on walls, vintage bottles of Scotch for sale, old school photos on the wall, and a very cool light fixture about the counter. The employees were friendly and seemed to be familiar with their customers. The food is prepared once ordered, so sandwiches hot and ready. I ordered the chicken cheesesteak with the works (mayo, mustard, ketchup, onions). I like pickles and sweet peppers cooked on my cheesesteak, but the hot peppers were on the table and they sold whole pickles and not slices. The poppy seed, kaiser bun was extremely fresh, soft and absorbed the cheese and other condiments very nicely. The chicken was tender and seasoned. It was a little salty, but not over powering. This sandwich was vey good, and make sure you have the napkins close by. You will definitely need them. I didn't mention the French fries because they were not the stars of the show, but they were good. If you are ever in Philly or close to south jersey, drive over to Donkey's Palace and get a cheesesteak. FYI, they are open during the week; however, they are only opened on Saturday once a month. TIL we eat again...

I went in blind and was surprised but enjoyed it all! Very friendly local spot. Great place to chill and relax for as long as you want. Food is great but pricey. Was expecting a more traditional cheesesteak but pleasantly surprised! Fries were great recommend cash (to avoid card fee)

Donkey's lives up to the hype...well worth the trip, a really worthy cheese steak! Servers were pleasant and helpful. Very mellow vibe. Pro tip: use ride share (Lyft or Uber) as the parking lot is small and was full when we arrived at 1:15 on a Thursday afternoon.

It's been 8 years since my last visit to Donkeys Place ONLY because I rarely come to Philly. A few weeks ago I returned and was salivating at the thought of dining here. My visit was for lunch. There is a very small parking lot next to this restaurant/bar with maybe 3-4 spots. Other than that it's street parking only. Inside there is the bar area and a small dining room in the back. You want to sit in the bar area and at the bar is the best. The "kitchen" consists of a large griddle behind the bar where the magic happens. This eatery/bar is counter service and I ordered a cheesesteak with a small order of fries and fountain drink that with tax came to about $22. I sat at the bar near the griddle and watched them cooked the food. Meat, onions and seasoning on a steamed poppy seed bun. Perfection. My meal was ready in less than 10 minutes. The fries here are very good, kind of the shoestring type and with seasoning. No ketchup really needed. The cheesesteak made me so happy. Simple delicious and my all time favorite. Anthony Bourdain was correct when he said the best Philly cheesesteak is in New Jersey and he was talking about here. Donkey's Place is cheesesteak heaven. It's silly for me to consider flying back to Philly just to eat here isn't it? Boy, am I tempted.....

It definitely is a local place. The food and drink was fine! I enjoyed the onion rings. I like the service/people that work there. The only thing is the ambiance. It's pretty run down, kind of awkwardly laid out, and the bathroom is terrifying. A giant spider living by the sink, and everything else just...ahh. I'd do take out honestly. But I do love their humor and merch.

Cheesesteak on a poppy seed bun isn't your traditional way to eat it, but I am so glad it exists. This isn't your average cheesesteak. It's way above average. It's the best cheesesteak I've ever had (sorry Philly). It's a friendly laid back place that is deserving of all the praise it gets. If I'm ever back in Camden, it will be the first place I go!

Had the Cheesesteak sandwich for the first time. I have to rank it as top 5 that I've had. A hoagie probably would have put it top 3 for me. Wasn't too crazy about poppy seed Hard Roll, but still magnificent. The taste of the steak with mix of the onions were awesome. I bet that grill has its own secret ingredients. The only negative was the area it's in. Just a bit sketchy surrounding. Restaurant could use some good upgrading. A bit old looking and need better lighting. I would go again, probably with some co workers. Great job Donkeys, keep up the good work.

Finally got in to check out Donkey's in Camden. The long and insanely over debated debate of "is this really a cheesesteak?" will finally be laid to rest, at least in my personal opinion, as of this day. I will also be hitting another one of Tony Bourdain's favorite spots and I truly appreciated that man and what he stood for so that excites me. Staff was super friendly, they serve beer, and there are a ton of funny t shirts everywhere donning the Donkey's brand. My kind of spot. I was also lucky enough to grab one of the like 4 parking spots in their lot and didn't have to deal with street parking. Got a cheesesteak wit' and some fries and a Miller High Life to wash that all down. The sandwich was...whatever it is. Is this a cheesesteak? I don't know, and more importantly, I don't care. I can tell you that it was tasty and that I'd go back and get another one sometime. I can tell you that it's even better once you start playing around with the hot pepper relish and the hot oil at the table. I can also tell you that in my personal opinion, it would benefit greatly from another slice or two of American right in the middle of all the meat. The bite is just slightly disjointed with all that meat together and the cheese at the top. I would absolutely come here again, and someday I will. Until then I will say that Donkey's Place in Camden - Didn't Suck! For the video from here and hundreds of other locations please check out my social media pages - https://linktr.ee/Didnt_Suck

I was excited to knock another local cheesesteak spot off my list for lunch, and based on the…read morereviews I had hoped I was in for a real treat. Ordering ahead of time was easy, and my food was hot and ready when I arrived, which I appreciated. However, the parking is a bit of a problem, since the storefront is tucked into a narrow alley off Route 70, and there were a couple of close calls with cars while I was pulling in. The cheesesteak hoagie was $20, and sad to say, other nearby spots are putting out a better sandwich at that price point. The bread was not toasted much and the sandwich just was not as full as I expected. The meat itself was not bad, but it missed the mark on flavor. I also grabbed a danish off the counter as a last minute treat, and it did not taste anything like it looked, with a very bland flavor and almost no sweetness, more like a plain piece of bread. Overall, I would pass on this spot, especially with stronger cheesesteak competitors in the area offering better sandwiches and a more satisfying experience.
