The sign says they open at 8am. I went at 9am twice, and they weren't open. Just adjust your sign with a later time. No one will be mad with you opening early. This place is an absolute gem. We were in town for The Oyster Festival and we came across Don's for some donut's and a break from the crazy crowds at the fest. This place is deceiving because you come in for some donuts and soon realize they have a full menu from freshly baked pizza to Bahn Mi's and everything in between. So my wife swept up a few donuts for later as I chose a bear claw as they were called when I was a kid. We were kinda hungry on the fly not to mention so we ordered a couple slices of pepperoni pizza to put back. Are you friggin' kinding me. That pizza was as good a pie from a little town that you can get in New York. It was a perfect piece of pizza. The crust was amazing with perfect texture and the mozzarella was so fresh you'd think it was crafted in house. And the pepperoni had the perfect amount of sodium to tie everything together for the unforgettable toothy bite if pizza. Well played Don's! Arcata should be proud to claim you as their own. Oh BTW did I mention that bear claw was a good a bear claw as you can get. Compared to the Silicon Valley their prices were really good! I've been a fan of Don's since 40 years ago and make a point to grab a few donuts each time I visit Arcata. Being a small town the hours can be unpredictable especially around the holidays. The staff are equally unpredictable ranging between wonderful and intimidating. Honestly I just care about the donuts which are great, wonderfully old school, quite large and very reasonably priced. The apple fritter, when warm and fresh is as good as life gets but their cinnamon roll is equally comforting. The blueberry cake donut takes me back to the 1980s, before pizza and banh mi, and Don was out there making the donuts. There are a declining number of Arcata memories that can still be relived and Don's is in the top tier of such institutions. read more

What a gem of a place. So very glad we decided to stop here on our way home to Chico. We wanted a quick bite now with a little treat to have for our 4 hour long drive home so Don's fit the bill. Donuts, sandwiches, pizza and more. We each got a sandwich for now and a donut for later and a cup of coffee to share. Our first mistake was only getting 1 cup of coffee. Wow is this delicious stuff. If I lived here, THIS would be my morning go to routine. AND they have Truvia, my preferred sugar alternative. Thanks for that! My sandwich was moan worthy. The croissant was fresh, flaky and just the right amount of crisp. My plan was to eat half now and half later. Ha! I devoured the whole thing. So good!! Don's donuts is the only place I have ever been to that has maple old fashioned with rainbow sprinkles, and they're my favorite. Don's is clean and they are polite. Ive only eaten the donuts, but I hear the pizza is great. The donuts are a little pricier than I've seen at other places, but they're good. We got a raised sugar, maple old fashioned with rainbow sprinkles, chocolate old fashioned with rainbow sprinkles, cake donut with maple and rainbow sprinkles, chocolate bar with vanilla custard and an apple fritter. Growing up dons has been a joy, but on Friday night (store was not too busy) I went with a group of friends and we ordered a pizza and they proceeded to say the pizza would take 45 minutes. So we ordered 1 sub and 2 bagels (with topping) and it took them 30 minutes to make it. The whole time they were talking behind the counter and blasting this odd SoundCloud style rap. Once we were getting our food another man that had been sitting inside before we got there got up to the counter to get his food and they man handed him a pizza, and the costumer said no I got the bagel, the clerk said that the bagel has been sitting behind the counter and just handed it to him. Just was disappointing! They were literally partying behind the counter there was a guy playing music on the speaker who did not move once while we were in the store. Also the tomato on my bagel was like all the outsides of it no middle ??? Made no sense. This place is almost always open (closed from 4:30 - 5:30am) and has an amazing array of doughnuts for you to choose from. I really enjoy the pizza, particularly the spicy chicken masterpiece. Awesome dougnuts, one of the best slices of pizza I have ever had. Friendly service. Doughnuts are obviously made with butter and DANG are they good. The last three times we have tried to get donuts in the morning they have remained closed after 8 AM. I have waited at the door and watched the late employee slowly open the shop much later than 8 AM. My friends have waited until after 8:45 AM and they were still closed. Dropped by here after "Pint Night" at Toby & Jacks. We basically wanted to get some alcohol sponges into our bellies for the night. Now Don's is THE place for donuts, but this night, we went for their pizza. They offer it by the slice (and the slices are monster!). I can't remember the types of pizza we had, but they had chicken and one of them was hella-spicy!! (and YUMMY). I see they also make Curry Chicken Pizza---I SO want to try this some day. Of course, we did get a few donuts as well, and they were pretty choice. Oh, I also went ahead and bought a Don's Donut T-shirt (man, I went out on stimulating this place's economy---Don's Must Never Leave Arcata!). I was dumbfounded by the culinary complexity that these sandwiches posess. They are that good. Start off with your regular meat, turkey, etc...on any number of bread choices (large selection for such a small shop) crossiant, bagel, roll, sliced, etc. but the clincher is the addition of the Vietnamese specialties. Which include but are not limited to: Pickled carrot and daikon radish (AN ABSOLUTE MUST), vietnamese hot sauce, mint, cilantro, lime juice, cucumbers...the list goes on and on. Probably the best southeast asian sandwich i've ever tasted. they also have a multitude of coffee's, ice creams, gormet sodas, it is a midnight wonderland in there...trust me.
