Timeless classic in the heart of Lafayette! I ordered the seafood platter and it was bulging with fried shrimp, fried catfish, hush puppies, stuffed crab, stuffed shrimp, and much more. The stuffed shrimp and crab tasted off and the server quickly apologized and substituted fried fish and catfish. No biggie, but food needs to be checked more often. Mediocre at best. Our server was excellent, but sadly the meal was a disappointment. The Fried Green Tomatoes were overpowered by a strong Remoulade sauce. The chargrilled oysters were ok. I remember when it was a restaurant that was quiet, you could carry a conversation etc. It still has "restaurant side" but the bar side with wide screen TV, loud music etc carries over. We went after my mom's funeral and would have left but stepdad had requested Don's seafood platter. We asked them to move us to restaurant side and it was better. While the food was good the "fried" shrimp were not battered, southern style. The fish was great just really thin filet pieces. He was happy and that's all that mattered​ read more

Stopped on our way from TX to FL looking for gumbo and we found an excellent spot! The fried catfish, seafood gumbo, fried crawfish, and Étouffée were all delicious! This place is fantastic! Go here, put your name in if it is crowded and find a way into a bar seat! The bartender and staff are outstanding, friendly and fun while still cranking out old fashions and cocktails at a staggering rate. The drinks were simply delicious- well done! The people all around us were so kind and offered all kinds of tips on their favorite foods. If you live here, you've probably been frequenting Don's for a while. As visitors, we felt so welcome. Our food was outstanding. I had 1/2 shrimp etouffe and 1/2 grilled shrimp (subbed for fried). My husband had the Jacked up oysters, loved them, and followed up with a shrimp platter. Well done!! My family and I were traveling from Texas to Mississippi and we stopped here for lunch. I can't remember the last time I had such delicious seafood! Our server Harold (goes by Jacob, though) greeted us very fast, and had a great attitude and an inviting, warm demeanor. We started with the boudin balls, which had great spice, the perfect amount of rice, and the fry was spot on. It comes with a sweet chili sauce that paired really well with them. My boyfriend and I shared the seafood platter with the gumbo add on. I can't review the included coleslaw because I substituted it for red beans and rice (Not a coleslaw kinda gal). Pops got the half catfish half shrimp. Our plates were extremely delicious!!! I am very impressed. As a Houstonian who is surrounded by mid grade Cajun food restaurants, this really made my day. One of the major problems with yelp is you only have an option for yes or no. I can't recommend this place enough. When you go and you have no reason not, you might get Victoria as your server. Came here on a Monday night, which is half off oyster night. They were not as pack as I thought they would have been, but that's a good thing? The service was fast, so yes, I enjoyed it not being busy. We had the following: OYSTERS ON THE HALF SHELL - juicy and salty, a little of hot sauce and horseradish and a squeeze of lemon, mhmm CHARBROILED OYSTERS - Oysters on the half shell, charbroiled with garlic butter and Romano cheese - delicious and rich, get some French bread to soak up all that butter DON'S ORIGINAL JACKED UP OYSTERS - Charbroiled oysters with bacon, jalapenos and pepper jack cheese - this was delicious, but had a little too much going on for me, I prefer the regular charbroiled SHRIMP & GRITS - Grilled Gulf shrimp in a creamy garlic butter sauce over Southern corn grits - grits were nice and creamy, shrimp was cooked perfect and well seasoned Not sure if the deal is year round on Mondays, but worth checking out if you're in the mood for oysters! read more

I've resisted giving Don's on Johnston a bad review for 2 years! But after 5 horrible meals... I feel I need to put this out there... because I'd love for them to make some improvements! Every single homecoming, prom or special occasion we had growing up, holds memories with a big group of us at Don's on Johnston St. but sadly, the quality of food and the experience has really gone downhill! 1. My seafood gumbo (small) had more than 10 shells from the crabmeat that I had to pick out of my mouth! 2. The catfish on the grilled catfish plate was so "blacked" which is apparently code for salty and spicy as all f**k I had to send it back. (I NEVER ever send food back to the kitchen, I usually just order something else) after my fish returned with a whole lot less seasoning on them... (my entire table was done eating by then and I was still waiting) I tasted my two sides... I ordered the mixed vegetable and the green beans... they were so salty I didn't even swallow! I thought to myself... maybe I'm just sensitive tonight to salt.... NOPE, I asked every single person who was sitting at our table to taste and they all spit it out! 3. My husbands Etouffee tasted aweful, again... we passed it around the table, and all reached the same conclusion! It tasted like straight up flour, so maybe the roux was rushed... but... I'd expect wayyyy better by Don's! I really hope this review gets in the hands of someone at Don's on Johnston... because I'd love to go and try it again and make more happy memories there... but y'all either need a chef change or to raise your standards around there! read more

My husband, our daughter and son-in-law (who were visiting from Geneva, Switzerland), and I celebrated my husband birthday and Father's Day at Don's tonight. Our son-in-law was very impressed by the variety and quality of the food. He especially enjoyed the oysters on the half shell. We all liked the hush puppies, gumbo, blackened redfish, stuffed potato, and mac and cheese. The bread pudding with rum sauce wad good, too. The wait staff were all good, too. Our waiter, Tyler Raggio, has an amazing memory! He brought everything promptly and offered anything we could possibly want and checked on us repeatedly. While on a work trip to Lafayette Louisiana, we decided to try Don's Seafood. The first time we went they were packed and the wait time was going to be 1.5 hours. We left and came back two days later. We didn't have to wait the second time around. The food was great, although I had to send my food back to get it reheated. I decided to get the char-broiled oysters, spinach dip, seafood gumbo, hush puppies, and the shrimp Alfredo with crab sauce. DELICIOUS !! Our server Chris was so amazing ! We have lived here in Lafayette 40 years and have been going to this location often. The butterflied shrimp and etoufee are good. The jacked up shrimp are really good!! In the past week we met Lou-Ann, a super attentive and efficient waitress with a wonderful French accent. It was great to talk with her the few moments!
