I heard from a friend that they make donut hole number cakes for birthdays with chocolate and/or buttercream frosting (pick your colors/sprinkles/adventure) and I called immediately. DC is a staple in Murfreesboro. My boyfriend loves them so much that he takes special trips out here to get donuts all the way from Nashville (I think mostly because it's reminiscent of the college days). The donuts are huge and definitely worth it. They have some interesting flavors like red velvet cake as well as some seasonal flavors. I'm usually a cake donut kind of person, but from here, I prefer the yeast filled donuts. They're unbeatably fluffy and delicious! The reason I don't prefer the cake donuts here is because of how thick the glaze on them is. This place is an institution in Murfreesboro. They have been consistent for the 30 years we have been living here. There have not been any major changes in all these years. They are a perennial local favorite year after year. For unknown reasons, I simply have not graced their doors in many many years. I'm glad I went today. There are long lines and limited parking, however. Today, I tried the cream cheese filled doughnut. What a great taste. I loved it. I also got a sausage, egg and cheese sandwich on croissant. It was very tasty, but the croissant was too big. It was a good value, but the filling just got lost under the bread. It made me feel that I was getting cheated. Okay, I have a (major) weakness for a good cake doughnut. So does the boyfriend. This donut shop is STELLAR. Not much for looks, but that doesn't really matter, does it? Their blueberry and red velvet cake doughnuts are my favorite- soooooo moist with the slightest crispiness on the very very bottoms...authentic as f***. :) I would pass on their bavarian cream and raspberry-filled...- I just didn't find them as special. We came here b/c our go-to donut shop, Donut Palace, is closed for renovations for a couple of weeks. This shop is the Mother of Donuts, a venerable venue in Murfreesboro for over 30 years. My grandpa used to sneak out for a donut and a coffee fearing the disapproval of my grandma. And I kept his secret--may have had something to do with me sitting beside him during the crime, munching my own delicious donut. We were impressed by the 24/7 hours they now keep. We got these today: glazed yeast donuts, blueberry cake, strawberry glazed cake, custard filled yeast with chocolate frosting, raspberry jam filled powdered yeast donuts, and chocolate cake donuts. For this review, personal donut preference drives the three stars. This donut is not for me and my family. The cake donuts are heavier than we prefer. The raised yeast donuts are also heavy, more bread-y. I'm not an expert baker, but I'm a bit of a geek and have baked bread, pastries, and studied it a bit (on my own, candidly). The crumb of the yeast donut is moist and chewy, but heavy, which tells me that the dough was raised over a shorter period of time. The style is more like a beignet than donut. The flour is likely higher gluten with less fine cake flour. I then compare the style and weight to Donut Palace. Very different. My family prefers the light, ethereal donuts at Donut Palace. I suspect the Donut Palace proofs their dough for longer and probably has a higher ratio of fine cake flour. Donut Country does make a fine raised donut that resembles bread, beignets and I'll gladly come back with a friend who loves this style of donut and break donut with them. But it is the donuts at Donut Palace that will forever have me enthralled. read more

I admittedly don't like donuts. I am, however, raising an absolute donut aficionado. She wanted a donut party for her 4th birthday. I saw their "birthday cakes" on yelp and called to ask about them. They were so friendly and helped this donut rookie out on ordering the cake along with a few dozen for the party. They were ready on time for pickup and were incredibly efficient. Our first trip to Donut Country and we were impressed with the drive-thru service. We were greeted with genuine, warm smiles as soon as we pulled up. They took our order (which was only two donuts) and the woman who I presume is the owner or manager popped her head out and asked us if we would like extra free donuts as they were closing soon. We left with a half dozen delicious donuts. These were so much better than Dunkin down the street. I will actually be deleting their app altogether and giving all of my donut biz to Donut Country. This is my absolute favorite donut shop. It doesn't look like much from the outside but I have a rule that if it's not donut country donuts, I don't want it. My favorite is the maple glaze and the giant cinnamon rolls. They're probably meant to be split by a family but I eat the whole thing cause it's so good! The donuts are also fresh. Any hour of the day or night, they have a good variety of doughnuts available, along with doughnut holes and crullers. The decor hasn't been updated in a decade or so, but no worries. We're talking doughnut shop here, and I really would rather the owners didn't spend their money on mood lighting and stone accent walls and whatnot. Just give me fresh doughnuts. The place is clean and tidy, and that's all you need. I'd like to highlight the chocolate icing on the doughnuts here. It really is fresh and light tasting. The doughnuts themselves, though, are a little bit heavier than I like. My personal preference is for the slightly fluffier ones you get across town at Donut Palace. If you like a cake-style doughnut, you'll be very happy here. When I go to Donut Country, I go for the apple fritter, which also seems to be available at all times. This thing is big, probably 6 or 7 inches across so it will feed two. If you're out on a date night, and you're just not ready to go home yet, drop by Donut Country and pick up an apple fritter and feed it to each other by tearing off one piece at a time. Trust me on this. I can't say I've sampled their coffee (I know, I know, a major oversight on my part because that's the perfect accompaniment for what's on offer here), so I leave that up to your judgment. I've definitely spent some great evenings there, catching up with friends, having a cup of coffee, or just greedily awaiting the fresh donuts that were coming out of the bakery in the back. Let's talk shop: DC makes some DAMN fine donuts. You can get anything from the standard glazed, to apple fritters the size of your head, to Dutch crumbs full of crumbly goodness. Then there's your typical jelly-fulls, cinnamon rolls (also ginormous), and even special treats on holidays like iced donuts with hearts and sprinkles on Valentine's Day. If you like donuts, there's something here for you, mark my words. It's a homey establishment for sure, featuring some rather entertaining news clippings hung proudly on the wall of the owner's old escapades in the Coast Guard, along with one of those singing trout plaques. It certainly looks like it hasn't changed since the '70s, and that's okay! Just keep on doing what you do best, DC, and that is donuts. As a side note, if you ever considering opening up a chain abroad, considering the hubbub everyone in Scotland had over the opening of their first Krispy Kreme, well. The cinnamon buns here are spectacular! I like the Dutch crumb a lot. The other cake donuts are good. The cinnamon rolls are as big as your head. I grew up in Centerville, OH home of Bill's Donuts. Bill's has been featured in many major/national magazines and newspapers as one of the best donut shops in the national. Donuts Country rivals Bill's in some areas. The area they are missing is customer service. You get sometimes friendly and other times not. They also need to just stick with donuts. Just had the breakfast sandwich today.
