When we arrived in town and were hungry after a long drive, surprisingly there were very few places open after 8 PM on a Friday. But, the reviews of door county fire were positive so we gave it a chance. I really don't know what to say. It just strikes me as your run of the mill bar food eatery. Unfortunately, my order wasn't correct and we barely saw the waitress while we were there. By the time I was able to flag down the waitress to let her know that she gave me the wrong meal, my fiancé was nearly done with her food and my food was already cold. Trying to be fair with my assessment. And before anyone gets bent-out-of-shape, I did talk to the manager/owner(?) before leaving the restaurant. We stopped by for a Monday evening dinner. We waited five minutes at the hostess point before we were approached. Maybe I should have taken her "you can sit down but it may be 5/10 minutes or longer before someone gets to you" as a sign to head down the road; I didn't because Door County shuts down like a frog's butt at 5 PM and we were hungry. Fast forward 25 minutes and we are sitting at our table. No water. No drinks. Not one employee approaching us. The girl who sat us walked by about 15 times as she made a point to clear two tables by us. No one was immediately seated as those tables. She would not make eye contact, nor could she simply say, "sorry for this taking longer than expected". When it became clear that being served wasn't happening anytime soon, we decided to leave. I won't simply leave and then bash a place. I went to the bar and asked the young lady who was doing a great job of treating us as invisible people if I could speak to a manager. She got someone from the kitchen and ran away as fast as she could. As did the other waitress and bartender. The gentleman I spoke to was pleasant. He offered up the "short staffed" and "hostess called in sick" explanation. I told him I wouldn't want his job and he asked for me to "be gentle" on the review I told him I would write. I wish I could have tried the food. I wish the staff was better trained. I wish I could have given the place a great review. While I understand the current state of hiring, it is crucial for business owners and managers to teach their staff to take care of customers, regardless of the bad hands they might occasionally be dealt. Enjoyed this bar maybe because I'm a firefighter but even if fire decor doesn't excite you you'll still enjoy a visit to Door County Fire Company. This was our first stop once arriving in downtown Sturgeon Bay. The staff was very inviting and helpful explaining the menu options and local beers. I ordered the Pioneer I believe it was called, basically a turkey club. Ingredients tasted fresh and the fries were crispy. Also ordered cheese curds which came out hot and fresh. I won't speak to their quality since I'm not from Wisconsin lol but to me they were very good. Overall had a good experience with our food and beer picks. They even put my hometown fire department patch on the wall and to my surprise you got a free beer when donating a patch! They did a nice job displaying the patches around the bar and all the fire memorabilia was great to see. Especially the American flag made out of fire hose our server told us the fire chief made it himself. Had a great time here no complaints and wish this company success in downtown Sturgeon Bay! You made our first impression of Sturgeon Bay a great one. read more

My wife and I live in Sturgeon Bay on the weekends on our boat and we decided to walk over and try Door County Fire. Cliffs notes: it was horrible and we won't be back. The staff was nice and the drinks were cold but the food was inedible. Even the bartender (our group of 4 sat at a corner spot at the bar) Abby asked us why nobody really ate their meals... The fried green beans were fine but the onion rings were a wet oily mess of breading falling off into a tool of oil and water. The two burgers my father in law and I ordered (medium) were dry hockey pucks with zero seasoning. One order of fries were raw/cold and dripping of oil, the other order were overcooked. My wife's broasted chicken tasted of rancid oil and was over cooked, and her chips had a funky taste with zero salt. The pasta/shrimp/alfredo my mother in law ordered tasted strangely like sweet onion sauce. My mother in law eats anything and is very simple to please and she didn't touch her pasta and picked through her shrimp. That was a first for me in 15 years. I am not one to ever complain, but when the bartender Abby asked us what was going on we all basically agreed the food was really bad and we were pretty dissatisfied. The owners gave us $6 off a $136 tab (before tip). How generous of them. I feel taken. I wanted to like this place given its location to our marina but we won't be back. Nor will any of friends. Come here for the drinks if you are thirsty, walk across the bridge or down 3rd Ave if you want good food. read more

Went here on a Friday night to get some dinner. We ended up going to the restaurant to order takeout because online wasn't accepting orders and when we called, the line was busy. Staff were all masked and it was super easy to just place our order at the bar. They said that it would be ready in 45 minutes, so we explored around downtown for a little bit and then went back to pick up the order. We ordered the fish tacos which came with homemade chips and salsa and the black bean burger with sweet potato fries. We both were big fans of the fish tacos, especially because all of the components came separated in the to-go container, so nothing was soggy by the time we got home to eat. The fish was well seasoned, the pickled red onions provided a nice acidity, and the coleslaw, cheese, and chili lime aioli added the creaminess. I will say, I wanted a little more spice to my taco so I added some jalapeno when we got back. The black bean burger was a great presentation piece, and I have to say the telera roll is highly underused for burgers. It worked perfect here though, as it could soak up all the juices from the burger and toppings without getting soggy. The patty itself was pretty good in flavor and it didn't taste overly salty like some veggie patties. It was a little squishy, but still managed to hold together when we cut the sandwich in two to split. The whole sandwich was benefited by the topping and created a balanced flavor of freshness in the mouth. Overall, we were very impressed with the food quality and will definitely keep this on the list of places to stop in Sturgeon Bay! read more

Our first vist after a long day in Door County May 27th. Was wandering downtown and decided to stop for dinner. Great choice. Wait staff was excellent, very attentive, food was reasonably priced. We had fried greenbeans as an appetizer and the supreme pizza for dinner. All very good. Wife had Bloody Mary and I had a beer from their well stocked tap options. We came here for a drink and a snack the evening that we got into town. It has your usual casual bar/restaurant type vibe. They have lots of TVs on around the room and hard top tall or short tables as well as bar seating. We ordered some bloody mary's and local beers, the jalapeno cheese curds, and the fried green beans. The portions were quite generous. In fact, the fried green beans were hard to finish between four of us! The jalapeno cheese curds really were not spicy at all but the bloodys did have a nice flavor and a little kick to them. Overall a good stop for bar food and drinks. read more

The neighborhoody vibe of this place looked appealing and we were more in the mood for a sandwich than a leisurely dinner, so in we went. The handsome restored building is brimming with history and the restaurant earns brownie points for honoring and supporting those who serve the local community. We would later learn that the current owner carried over the firefighter-centric sports bar theme of the previous tenant, Ladder House (which we're told was a couple rungs short). The bar has an excellent selection of Wisconsin craft beers. The menu features typical sports bar fare. Among the appetizers, "Spotted Cow Battered Onion Rings" caught our eye (for those outside of Wisconsin, Spotted Cow is New Glarus Brewing's flagship ale). What emerged from the kitchen contained not a trace of beer batter, in fact it looked and tasted exactly like breaded frozen onion rings. Fail. Our sandwiches fared better. My Missus' grilled chicken breast sandwich didn't win a blue ribbon, but it was properly cooked. I ordered "The Pioneer Club." Apart from the fact that it came on toasted white bread instead of the grilled sourdough stated on the menu, it was fairly good. A side order of creamy coleslaw was also pretty decent. But our friendly and attentive server, who went the extra mile to make our experience pleasant, is the reason I'm giving this place 3 stars instead of 2. read more

Had dinner here Wednesday night. Ordered their seafood chowder. It wasn't as great as some people here have raved. The waitress served it to me with some of the soup spilled on the little plate the bowl was on. I mean come on. Is it really that hard to clean that up and serve it better? Waitresses and waiters often forget that they only have one chance to impress their customers. (I've had my share of experiences in the service industry). My wife had the walleye plate. It was alright. My daughter had the Monterey Mac and cheese. She like it. She sort of a Mac and cheese snob. I wouldn't really recommend it unless you're really into this sort of food. Stopped in for dinner on a Thursday night after 3 other places weren't taking any more diners for the evening or were on a two hour wait. I understand that they are likely understaffed, like most places in the area right now and I'm sympathetic to that. But... we were trying to get carryout and called 4 times to only get the answering machine saying to try again or come in. So we came in and it took another 25 minutes to have the (only) person working at the bar take our order. Nothing complicated, another 30 minutes to make the food while we waited. The food was OK. Nothing special. They got some of the details wrong (i.e. raw onions instead of grilled, while charging for grilled). Stopped in to this local establishment after shopping downtown in Sturgeon Bay's quaint shops. Walking in, the theme of this restaurant/pub fits it's name. Fire Department photos, and other collectibles line the walls and rafters. They have a vast menu of salads, dinners, burgers, and various other edibles. I had the Cobb salad, which was truly delicious. It has a full bar, and a great venue to watch your favorite sporting event. The staff is very cordial and attentive. Visited during the weekend of June 11-12. It was a little towards closing time, around 6:00pm. The wait wasn't too long to get seated or to order food so that was good. It took a little long to get our food, but it was worth it! The vibe of the place is really comfy and niche. They also have very unique dishes there. I personally ordered a Caesar wrap with a side of jalapeño cheese curds and my Dad ordered the Badger Melt. My opinion on the Caesar wrap is that it's not extraordinary, but it's a solid wrap. Mine didn't get soggy like a lot of other wraps I've had and they didn't over-season it which was nice. It was very refreshing to put it simply. The jalapeño cheese curds were okay, they weren't spicy at first but it builds as you eat it. But if you get jalapeños on your sandwich or burger it's not going to taste very spicy in comparison. The badger melt was really good according to my dad and the bread they serve it on is unique as well but it works well! Ate here last Friday. The good- Our server was very nice and attentive. My wife liked her reuben sandwich. The bad- the pan fried perch dinner was one of the worst meals I've had in a long time, I barely ate a quarter of it before giving up. The fish was horribly greasy and mushy and I normally love all kinds of fish. I could only do three bites. Even if the fish was good I felt it was a small portion for the price of the meal.The garlic baby reds were completely flavorless. Must've been very weak garlic and unsalted butter?And the coleslaw was just coleslaw. We were sitting outside and when the sun got a little to warm they helped opened the umbrella. We ended up ordering an appetizer platter and enjoyed every bite! This pub and grill recently opened up in the old fire station. The Ladder House had occupied the building before this one. It retains the fire house theme and character of the original fire station. They even have the brass pole once used by the firemen as part of the décor. The color theme is red and black. The furniture and bar are new and modern. The restrooms are clean and modern with motion activated facilities and towel dispensers. The hours are limited to lunch and dinner until they become more cohesive as a team. The hours will be extended by the summer. They have a nice sandwich menu, a variety of soups and salads, a fish fry, and pizza. There is a modest bar with 5 tap beers and several liquors. I ordered the Flying Dutchman burger. This is a 1/3 pound burger with sautéed mushrooms and smoked gouda on toasted focaccia. The burger was good but not exceptional. The fries and other sides cost $1.00 extra. My wife had the grilled chicken sandwich. I was impressed as they had gluten free bread available at her request. I can't review the service fairly as we arrived as they opened and were the only customers at the time, so yah service was good. This place is worth a try if you are in the area. It could be busy come summer as it is located in the heart of downtown Sturgeon Bay. read more
