Dos Coyotes is one of my go-to spots for a reliable takeout burrito on busy weeknights, and I've had consistently good experiences at other locations, however something about this one feels off. The vegetarian burrito here tends to be mostly rice with just a small amount of beans and guac, which makes it feel a bit underwhelming. Especially compared to other locations where the balance is typically spot on. I've also noticed their "mild" salsa is surprisingly spicy (at least to me), and this has been consistent across visits. I've been coming to this restaurant since they opened over 25 years ago. The food is very high caliber and very fresh. Even on the more common items like their Mexican rice are made with care. Their salsas are some of the best in Sacramento. Crispy shredded beef tacos are worth a visit. I'm not sure how they have maintained such high standards and consistency in the preparation of their food for so many years....but they do! My family and I were here today for lunch and we had a fabulously delicious experience. We arrived a tad early at 11:45 AM before the "lunch rush" and had the entire restaurant to ourselves. This cafe is located in the Arden Mall area food court (separate from the Arden Mall) next to Barnes and Noble. I love all the various options here including the bowls, salads, tacos and kids menu! We ordered the veggie burrito, the grilled veggie quesadilla (which was HUGE) and two orders of the kids taquitos for our kids. Firstly, their salsa area is HUGE (talk about varieties) and talk about cleanliness! Loved their refillable salsa bar and attentive staff. The food we ordered were fresh, delicious and quick! Do you want to eat somewhere that preys on all of your senses? Maybe you want food that leaves you howling for more? Perhaps this review is going to be full of terrible food puns.....who can say for sure. What I can tell you is that Dos Coyotes is food worth trying (and trying again). We have ordered a wide variety of foods from burritos, to nachos, to salad, to tacos, and all of it is toothsome. For me the California Fish Taco and the Adobe Salad are both standouts. The Jicama in the salad is such a unique and crunchy addition to the flavor profile of the salad and I love it. The Santa Fe Nachos are also fabulous. I love the use of the blue corn tortilla chips. It's a unique and nuanced departure from the normal street variety nacho. On a side note, there is a sauce included with one of the meals, it's almost like a cilantro chutney but also kind of chimichurri-esque too. I wish I knew if it was just their salsa verde or a sauce with a meal, but I could eat it with a spoon. It is magnificent. I do wish the hours were being adjusted back to pre covid, since they close fairly early. I am often not on a nine to five type schedule in life. That's my only gripe. Had high hope with the good reviews. Unfortunately I left feeling ripped off and dissatisfied. Everything was SO greasy. When I pointed it out to a manger he acknowledged it was a problem and blamed corporate. I said I could not eat the food because of the Abundance of oil. He offered to bring me more. I haven't been to Dos Coyotes since the 90s and the last one I had been to was in Davis. Conveniently located and attached to the Arden Fair Mall. A Southwest theme with lots of seating inside. You can also sit out in the food court but you can't bring your alcohol into the food court. D1 and D2 both ordered chicken burritos that they were satisfied with. My absolute favorite item on the menu is the Navajo Nachos - but I guess it has to be because I love it so much that I haven't bothered to try anything else. It's 107 degrees, so where do you go out for dinner? Wife and I were in Sacramento and were to meet with wife's sister and husband. Sister suggested El Torito across the street from the Arden Mall. Only problem is that El Torito is closed, as is Elephant Bar, and wife's sister's husband is not only vegetarian, but won't eat anything made with eggs. Wife checks out Olive Garden, Black Bear Diner, and then California Kitchen, but sees an overhead mall sign and suggests Dos Coyotes. Next evening we walk from our hotel to the far end of the mall, about a mile away. No locals out walking in this oven like heat, just us tourists. We find the cheesecake factory but no Dos Coyotes. Turns out, it is in the mall itself, and not visible from the front parking lot. Fast food place right next to the movie theater complex. Big overhead menu with prices listed. 10 four seat tables, 8 seats at the counter and 11 two seat tables, so no shortage of places to sit. Tile floor, freshly painted walls, and clean but simple table tops. Food crumbs from the previous occupant on the floor -a table without a doubt with kids! Wife and I get a $10 Yucatan salad, and her sister gets a $11 salmon salad, as her husband couldn't make it. Got to take advantage of every opportunity to eat meat or fish while the vegetarian husband is gone! This is the only place where the wife and I split a dish, as we are both on the chunky side, and can almost always can finish our individual meals by ourselves. Service is prompt, with the Yucatan salad coming pronto. Huge 16" plate, heaped high with mixed greens, black beans, red onions, carrots, sliced red peppers, corn, with a light southwest vinaigrette on the side, together with thousand island dressing, and a mango salsa, all this over a flour tortilla on the bottom of the plate. 5 strips of grilled chicken. Wife goes to the self serve counter, and gets a couple of paper mini cups of grated onions, and chunky tomato salsa. We get extra plates, and split the salad. Love the mango salsa, but the southwest vinaigrette is just average, as are the strips of grilled chicken, which lacks flavor. Wife's sister gets the salmon salad, with good chunks of salmon together with the mixed green salad, mango salsa and pineapple, on a 12" plate. Her husband is a vegetarian, and raises the entire family as vegetarian, with no eggs, so whenever he's away she'll eat meat and fish. They have one of these electronic drink machines, where you point and touch your choice soft drink. So when you choose coke, there are a dozen types of different cokes. Checked out the other plates people ordered, and the nacho dishes were huge. The burritos were on the large side, but not much larger than normal, and easy to hold in one hand. Not advisable to hold in one hand when steering the car with the other hand, as you will get hot drippings on your crotch! My only regret about this place is that DCBC only has restaurants in the Sacramento Area, Davis, and Concord -all areas with triple digit temperatures today. Talk about hot stuff. read more

Oh my gosh! I had a large order for my work today. We had multiple special requests due to different food intolerances. I called ahead to ask what my options were, and the chef took my call and created a plate that I could enjoy. I picked up our order today, and everything was hot, fresh, and on time. I've always loved Dos Coyotes but it was always out of the way for me so I never have it as often as I like. But since I heard they were opening a new location closer to me, I thought I'd check them out again to see if there was anything new. This is a review of this location as well as the food over several visits. To my delight the Chicken Caesar Salad was still delicious and I even tried out their burrito bowls. I ordered one night from Caviar and had it delivered and while they delivered a regular burrito instead of a bowl, it was still delicious. The steak is good quality and the flavor was amazing. I'm very picky about my food and if I'm able to, I make a lot of changes. Mostly I take stuff away rather than substitute. When i get the burrito bowl, I basically order just the meat with cheese and occasionally pay extra to have the rice. I get the guacamole, salsa and the sour cream on the side. I will try more things, but I guarantee if it's got the steak or chicken it will be good. As for the location, I try to go when it's not too busy at the mall, but it's in the food court next to the movie theater and Barnes & Noble. While they're in the food court, they have their own section, so it feels less like food court dining. Overall, the food is great, the location is convenient (unless it's the weekends or holidays) and you get a lot of food for your money. Definitely try the salads if you're not sure of what to get. I love Dos Coyotes but another weird staff interaction. I ordered my food online and I go pick it up. I'm greeted by a brunette with a ponytail. She seems nice enough. However, I came back from the salsa bar to ask for a plastic fork and knife. She says it should be in the bag. I said "I didn't see it". She says it should be in a brown bag near the chips. I said "I didn't see it". She repeats again that it should be in the bag.... I DIDN'T SEE IT" She reluctantly hands me 1 knife and 1 fork. As I'm leaving, she's talking to another employee about it. I'm confused... it's a plastic fork??? I said to her, "it's just a plastic fork" as I walked out. Like, this girls costs less than 1 cent to produce. I just spent $24. Get a life! The grilled corn on the cob. Get it. NOW. Seriously, get it now while it's still on the seasonal menu. Trust me, you will be one sad face if you miss out on this perfectly charred piece of corn heaven, served with an outstanding chili-lime butter and philosopher cheese. You probably don't even need the soft, mild white cheese because it's really the rich and creamy butter that catapults the corn to culinary heights. You just want to slather it on everything! I could base my whole review on just this one $3 item, but since it's only around for a limited time, I'll let you know what else I recommend (although I'm still thinking about that dreamy butter!). The salads are huge, made with a ton of fresh veggies, and signature grilled protein on a king sized bed of mixed greens. I've had the Yucatan and the Yin Yang (Asian chicken salad), the latter being my favorite. It's the sesame-based dressing they put on the Yin Yang that makes this dish a standout. I could drink that stuff. You can never go wrong with their burritos. The grilled steak is my favorite. The border burrito is huge, with all the fixings inside. Getting it wet (red sauce and melted cheese on top) is always a messy indulgent. Go for the Southwest if you prefer a smaller burrito with just the meat, cheese, guacamole, and salsa. Light and crisp tortilla chips come with the burrtios. Dos Coyotes has one of the best salsa bars in the universe. Among the 6 different red and green salsas to choose from, there's usually a seasonal or special, like mango or corn. My favorites are the thick green one that resembles a pureed guacamole and the mango (if they have it). Service is great. Employees are fast and friendly. I've never had an issue with takeout orders either. Four stars only because a few items I've had, not mentioned in this review, were just average in taste. But I'm definitely a fan of Dos Coyotes, and an even bigger fan of that grilled corn on the cob! read more

I hate to do it, but it needs to be known. This is one of the worst places I have ever dined at. LOCATION: This place is situated inside of the United Artist Movie Theater Food Court. And yes, that's a mouthful. The food court is very industrial looking with high ceilings and exposed metal beams overhead. Very cool looking. And straight towards the back is Dos Coyotes looking very inviting with some cool art and design on the outside. AESTHETICS: The same theme of appealing outside art can also be found inside. There's even an interactive piece that sways from side to side if you rock it, which you are permitted to do if you're above the age of 12. Understandable. FOOD: Presented beautifully, tasted terribly. This is a Tex Mex styled restaurant so I decided to go with my usual order for any new Mexican oriented restaurant I dine in. The Quesadilla. You cannot mess up this simple, tasty and eloquent dish. A Quesadilla tells me everything I need to know about a Mexican restaurant. This one was the most tasteless Quesadilla I've ever eaten, including the ones I used to make as a child in the microwave with a tortilla and a couple of slices of Kraft cheese. It could not have been seasoned. Not to mention it was bone dry along with the beans that nearly turned to dust. DRINK: What kind of Mexican eating establishment doesn't have blended or frozen margaritas? None I've been to including Chipotle. Nonetheless, I tried a watermelon margarita on the rocks. Biggest mistake yet. I could not force myself to finish even for the purpose of not wasting money. I would have rather had someone take a sip from my cup and taste it before serving me that concoction. That was the worst drink I have ever had and I've had some heavy handed friends making drinks at house parties after they've drunk way too much. I wanted to take it back, but after tasting the food, I thought it couldn't get any better. I left hungrier than I was when I came in. EXPERIENCE: The floorplan looked like a box of unbuilt Legos. They tried to fit every inch of floor space with seating. I had to move my table into the doorway so that I could sit down with barely enough room to breathe. My first exposure to a Dos Coyotes was at this particular restaurant many years ago when I went on a first date with Joe K. This was one of his favorite places, and I had no idea what to order, so he ordered several different dishes that I could sample. Of course we couldn't eat all of that food, but there was plenty of delicious left overs to take home! That was one dinner date I'll never forget! Recently, during some holiday shopping at the Arden Fair Mall, we decided to check them out again to see if they were just as good! This time we didn't order as much food, but a meal for each of us seemed more financially reasonable. I ordered the Yolo Cranberry chicken burrito, and Joe got the California Taco plate. As we casually waited for our dinners to be prepared, it was fun reminiscing about the good old days and how Dos Coyotes has become one of our favorite restaurants to go to. Usually we go to either the one in Elk Grove or on Folsom Blvd. because they are more convenient to our locations. I have a fondness for Dos Coyotes because the food is different, with unexpected ingredients that seem to bring a pleasant surprise of delicious flavor combinations. And you certainly get a huge plate of food from salads to tacos! It's not just Mexican food, it's their creative version of Southwestern/Mexican border style dishes. It also has a large, well maintained salsa bar. I never get tired of eating here because they have a nice variety of options to choose from. Went to the 65th st. location. This salad is huge! The adobe salad vegetables were so fresh. For example, the sweet and freshly grated carrot and the crunchy jicama were great. It came with a bit of guacamole, corn and black beans as well as well seasoned and tasty cubed chicken. The salad dressing was in two little containers. Their salsa bar is extensive. Me and my boyfriend went to this location on Valentine's Day around 8:30 pm. It was surprisingly empty. The restaurant is a lot smaller than I thought. It's not actually restaurant sized, more sized like a smaller fast food restaurant, but it is located in a mall so it's size fits for the location. My boyfriend ordered the Adobe nachos and I ordered the Yucatán salad. We both got chicken for our meat. Both plates were fairly large and look appetizing. The taste of the food was pretty good as well, not amazing but definitely better than something I could make at home. I was only able to finish half of my plate(and that's say a lot since I can eat a whole chipotle burrito in one sitting and still be down to eat more lol). And My boyfriend ate about 3/4 of his nachos. One thing that I noticed was that their portions may be large but the amount of meat you get is still fairly small. For my salad I wouldn't go out of my way to eat bites with chicken I would just poke my fork down and eat whatever it happened to grab but I still ran out of chicken halfway through the salad. The same with my boyfriend, by the end he only had a pile of cheese, beans, and chips. No meat. Another thing is that the meat was a little tough and dry, not to the point of being inedible but definitely enough to make it noticeable when you put a piece in your mouth. Something that really stopped me from eating more of my salad were the pieces of onion, usually I like onion but these pieces were amazingly bitter. Whoever I got a bite with a piece of onion that would be all I can taste. Other than that everything was pretty good. We didn't really have a server, you just go to the counter and order your food then sit and wait for it to come out. There was a couple after us that got their food before we did, I'm assuming because our order simply took longer to make. I would go here again because of the good portion sizes and prices, but I wouldn't really recommend this place for any other purpose that to stop and have a quick bite. read more

This particular Dos is located by the theaters, the book store and other shopping areas and food places. The location is great and the parking is usually pretty good. The staff is friendly and they really work hard. I've never had to wait really long for any of my orders.
