Came in on a Friday afternoon. Not too packed yet and didn't have to wait for a table. Everything was clean and the staff was very friendly. Ordered the ramen and because it has coconut milk, it has a different flavor from traditional ramen. Not in a bad way. The actual noodles were a bit over cooked for my taste. My friends and I visited before and after we went to a street party in summer. The shaved fennel was refreshing with lots of fresh herds. In Portland proper, however, you get a taste of the amazing, creative, and entrepreneuring vibe that the city has come to embrace proudly; chefs here seem less concerned about what "authentic" connoisseurs think as opposed to what other adventuring curious gourmands may enjoy and appreciate. Take the pork belly Bánh Mi at Double Dragon, for example. The delicious "oriental by accident" creation contains a generous serving of pork belly, cilantro, pickled carrots, homemade turmeric pickled daikon radish, pesto sauce, and sriracha mayo, squeezed in between freshly broken Dutch Crunch-like bread from Grand Central Bakery. Not quite your typical hole-in-the-wall Bánh Mi ingredients, but it works, and it tastes absolutely incredible. Pork Belly Banh Mi was not bad, but 10 bucks for a banh mi that would normally be 4-5 bucks at any other reputable place is in my opinion something to be frowned upon. I would have thought this was an Asian place, but we were the only ones. No matter! The surprise is the ramen, which is actually much like a thai Khao Soi. Great little spot with delicious unique drinks and yummy bites. We had the burnt reynolds and the moon roof, both were served with a giant cube of ice. We also had the banh mi with pork belly and it was SO delish, definitely more American style but the meat and flavors were tasty. We had our baby with us and minors are allowed before 9 pm so it was a great option to have a lovely experience and be able to have the kid. What a splendid, laid back and relaxing venue accompanied by a very knowledgeable bartender (Jason) manning the bar. With such a well-versed knowledge of the cocktail menu, I would consider him a mixologist rather than just a bartender. This is useful if you're indecisive on what to order so give Jason your style of cocktails and he can create you a fine concoction tailored specifically to your palette. Another bonus was the availability of my favorite Japanese whiskeys and also my favorite Japanese beer (the Hitachino White Ale). Everything about the place put me right in my comfort zone and allowed me to press cruise control for the rest of the evening. Their drink menu is fantastic but what stood out was the PanAm. A cocktail with "pho stuff" in it!? Really?! I love pho and cocktails so the novelty of having both together is an opportunity I couldn't pass up. I really didn't have high expectations since I didn't think the two flavors would mix well but to my surprise the drink was actually very pleasant. It tasted just as you imagined; an alcoholic pho beverage. They did a fantastic job balancing the pho flavor with the alcohol so neither side was overpowering. As for the food, the pork belly banh mi was delectable. The sauce had good citrus flavor, the meat was tasty and savory, the veggies were fresh and the baguette had a perfectly crispy outer layer and soft inner layer. Also, unlike my inital low expectations of the PanAm, the banh mi burger was just as good as I expected. The medley of the Vietnamese flavors infused with the burger was as glorious as I had imagined it would be. A deliciously solid Vietnamese fusion dish. With the mastery of the art of cocktails, a wide range of available beer and spirits, an appetizing menu, and an extremely knowledgeable and pleasant staff, this is one place I would now consider a staple whenever I visit Portland. The addition of the vintage Double Dragon arcade was also a nice touch. Another thing to note is that the entire place was fairly busy all night but it was handled very efficiently and friendly with only Jason and Courtney holding the fort for the entire night. So here's my favorite bits: 1. Beverages. They have a plethora of phenomenal cocktails & beverages. The Burnt Reynolds is my favorite. 2. Food. Ramen, bahn mi, rice bowls. Really can't go wrong with anything on the menu. 3. Ambience. Not only has this place always had a delightful neighborhood hangout vibe. They've done a particularly great job adapting to outdoor seating requirements in a way that doesn't take away from their atmosphere. Looking over the menu of noodle soups, rice bowls, banh mi, hot dogs, burgers, and salads--all with an Asian influence--we finally decided to go with their banh mis! Place your order at the bar, and pick it up from the counter when it's ready. We ordered a Pork Belly and a Pulled Pork Banh Mi. Both non-traditional banh mis were delicious! The Pork Belly Banh Mi was filled with charred pork belly, "melty" pork fat, and special glaze dressed with pickled carrot and daikon, aioli, and jalapenos. The piece of pork belly was really generous! The Pulled Pork Banh Mi consisted of Carlton Farms pork shoulder and pickled vegetables in an overnight rub and 8-hour braise. A fresh toasted, fat bun (by traditional banh mi standards), with tender, juicy pork belly, pickled veggies, and some kind of marriage between a cilantro and mayo sauce. Had the coconut curried ramen, miso gravy fries, roast duck banh mi. These were all too salty but if not for that they were all delicious. I ended up adding water to the ramen to dilute the salt more. The papaya salad was just OK. Not seasoned well and uninteresting. Coconut cookies were delicious! Order them if you like coconut. Yum! I'll go back again for the miso gravy fries and drinks and ask for less salt on the fries. This seems to be a great place when you are looking to get comfort food kind of meal and a quite nice time with no frills or fancy. They have a great outdoor seating which we have used every time we have been there and always find it very relaxing even though its right on the main street corner. You order at the bar and they get you the food wherever you are seated. The bowls they have are sooo good and so are the BanhMi sandwiches. It is one of those foods that you eat that you don't feel too guilty about even if it's a plate full of fries . Love the flavors and the quality of the food. I had a soy curls bowl, and it was a lot of food. I loved the flavors, and it was chock full of complex flavors and textures. My only complaint is that the soy curls seemed a little overly fried.
