Having grown up on a corn-based Indiana diet, I have never been a foodie. When I'm in the mood for a "nice steak dinner," I generally end up at Chipotle. So when I decided to change things up this past weekend and visit Down on Grayson, the vast array of menu options was initially unnerving. "Burrito Bowl" was not listed anywhere! Fortunately, I had a friendly and knowledgeable bartender to recommend the right selections! Understanding of my primitive palate, Victoria guided me through several food and drink offerings, providing precise descriptions of each. Per the young woman's suggestion, I began with Crispy Brussels, followed by a perfectly mixed Trump (White Russian). Then, steering me away from steak in a way which would have made the Chick-fil-A cows proud, Victoria insisted that I try the restaurant's Crispy Chicken Sandwich for my main meal. The bartender had gone 2-for-2 in recommendations, but I was skeptical of this third one. The sandwich came topped with balsamic coleslaw and I had functioning taste buds; it didn't seem like an appealing combination. But when the sandwich arrived, my premonition was proved pleasantly wrong! Down on Grayson far exceeded my expectations. The food and drinks were good, but it was the service that made the experience great. The most attentive, conversational bartender I have encountered in quite some time, Victoria kept my water filled and appropriately spaced out my orders so that each arrived at just the right time! The whole vibe is this place is so fun! I visited on a Thursday, parking was tricky. The food is reeeally tasty! I had the meatball app which is really only large enough for one person (I think) cuz they are on the mini side. I also had the chicken Caesar salad which was really flavorful, so glad I decided on that. I drank the spicey marg which was a little too tart for my taste. I also had the frozen drink of the day which was a raspberry lemon something or other and I havta say that was my fave! Service was great, staff is friendly, outdoor seating is really nice as well. Meh. Doesn't live up to the finish out-which is beautiful. Great location. I'll be happy to have cocktails on the patio this fall. Nothing special about the menu or the food. Disappointing to say the least. The Bloody Mary was awful-it was thick and undrinkable think spoon instead of straw. The bun on the fish sandwich could feed an entire village. Friendly atmosphere and pet friendly patio area. Will be too hot out during the summer with the black rocks. Drinks were tasty and stout. Our server was friendly and nice, however the "service" it self was not up to par. One of our guest arrived 20mins after we had ordered and received their meal before us. After the manager came to stall the kitchen as clearly somthing was wrong, she explained a far fetched reason for the delay. Food was flavorful, however the fish tacos were Well done, charred to the extreme. Hopefully with time it well work out the issues. read more

First time visit. There were 6 of us. We had a problem with our food not coming out. Manager was quick to respond, offered us a free round of drinks. The girls happily had a 2nd Watermelon Daiquiri, and the guys a 2nd beer, . We all really liked the food and atmosphere! We will definitely be back! ! read more

We visited this place on a Friday about an hour before closing and their food and customer service was outstanding. The establishment itself is in a great location with a few parking lots surrounding it - which is fabulous because parking can be hard to find at other places in the area. The menu is small but full of variety. We had some meatballs along with chips and guacamole and a cheese dip for appetizers. Our groups entrees consisted of a burger, crispy chicken sandwich, and tortilla soup - all of them were delicious. The place is dog friendly and has lots of space to sit outside. read more

Been here several times and last Friday was the worst visit. It was crowded, so we were told an hour wait. It actually took an hour and a half. The bar is very long and they had 3 bartenders. It took 20 minutes to order a beer while we waited on a table. After getting to the table, the service was very slow. Waited another 20 minutes to pay our bill. Had dinner with a friend tonight. Down On Grayson is a beautiful restaurant that is very inviting from the outside. The menu is small and really lacking of appetizers. We ordered starter side salads. Mine was with blue cheese dressing my friends was supposed to come with dressing but was served without any. Our server was great and immediately brought out a serving of dressing for my friend. As the entree I ordered a French Dip sandwich that was very tasty. The roast beef was rare and piled high on a toasted beget. Have to say the service was great and while the selection is limited the food rocked. read more

Love this place. Great drinks-bartenders know their stuff, make spot-on recommendations. Food-wonderful; so far french dip, meatballs, fish tacos, and panini sandwich are very best,can't wait to try rest of menu. Get down here for food, drink, responsive service, and casual atmosphere. I have not had such disappointing service in a very long time. The food was pretty good, my boyfriend's was anyway, the parmesan fries were the best part of my meal. However, I really can not get over the horrible service, I usually only ever post positive reviews, unless it's a repeated poor experience. But due to service we experienced today I am reluctant to even give them a second chance. In the hour or so we sat there we saw our waiter a total of four times and he probably spoke less than 50 words, he was very cold and impersonal and just not what you would expect. I ordered the Thai Steak Salad and was some what disappointed. It was very spicy, to the point where a good waiter may have emphasized what was stated on the menu, however that wasn't the worst part; I didn't mind the spice. The part I was more upset about was that it was loaded with cilantro, an ingredient not listed on the menu or mentioned by our server- considering I hate cilantro I was very disappointed, but I couldn't say anything because our server was no where to be found.. The only redeeming quality about this restaurant was that it seemed to be only a problem with our particular server, the server at the table next us seemed much better and much more attentive. The beer was cold. Food was all a miss. Good thing all the other places are cash cows.

I visited Down on Grayson for the third time. I was with a large crowd, 15 adults and 6 children. We arrived at 3:30 and it wasn't packed so perfect for our large party. I informed the hostess that splitting us up would be fine. One table of 15 for adults and one table of 6 for children. Our table of 15 ended up being a tight table of 14. When I asked the waiter to add another small table because they got the numbers wrong, he called the manager. The manager told me he was informed there were only 20 people and the split was 14 and 6. He said an adult could sit at the kids' table. Really??? What a d***. Way to accommodate your customers. We ended up adding the 15th person to the tight adult table and just made the best of it. The waiter was okay. No smiles, not friendly. It was a bit disappointing because my first two visits included great waiters. The food is good and I enjoy the atmosphere. Not sure if I'll give it another shot. The people who work here need classes on customer service and friendliness. read more

I love this place. The Brussels sprouts are the best thing to get for an appetizer and there sandwiches are delish. If you love cake try the strawberry or coconut. You won't be disappointed read more

Man I was so excited about this place! Just waking by I knew I wanted to sit on the patio. It's just so cute, and those striped umbrellas!! We were seated promptly, and then everything changed. We were extremely friendly, yet everything we asked for was met with an eye roll from our waitress Samantha. She rolled her eyes every time she came to our table. Including when we politely told her one of our water glasses had a very long hair in it(it was the only male at the table). Honestly, this experience was in my top 5 of horrible service. Samantha was so incredibly rude that we moved on to a different restaurant. She completely ruined our experience here. We were so disappointed because everyone around us seemed so happy, even her other tables, but when she'd turn around to help us, smiles disappeared and the attitude came out. I don't know what we did to offend her so, but we won't be back. So unfortunate because the food and drink were amazing! read more

Went here one evening with my sister and brother in law. It did not disappoint! I was super excited to try the French Dip sandwich as it is one of my favorite dishes anywhere. It was delicious! Our server Kourtney was awesome and she was working her butt off in the heat outside! The heat even made our water carafe explode which was no big deal! The manager came to make sure we were okay and passed out a round of shots! So happy I finally got to try this restaurant and can't wait to come back! read more

Clearly they forgot about us, as we were left waiting for our server to come and greet us for a good while until finally someone else's server, who happened to be walking by, asked if we had been helped yet. This place was really great. The decor was beautiful and I just loved the stripe umbrellas outside. The tortilla soup was the best I had ever had and it was perfectly made I hope one day I duplicate the recipe so I can eat it every day for the rest of my life. Also, the burger was so juicy and delicious, just outstanding. The service was great and I really recommend this place! The only thing I did not fancy was the watermelon daqueri which was super sour and slightly tasted like ocean water but maybe some people like it that way who am I to judge. read more

I give the place a 4 star in food and price. The food is freshly prepared (my dish) (Crispy Chicken) and well priced for the quality of food. The server was very good and very polite. Now the ugly, even though the food was good my brother got food poisoning from the French Dip sandwich. He called to inform them of the issue. The manager was extremely defensive trying to put the blame on food that he MUST of eaten prior. I know that was not the true since that was the only thing he had eaten that day. The manager at the end finally apologized but did not even say that they would look into it. read more

Went for the first time last week- the space is beautiful; the menu was great. Not necessarily the healthiest food, but had a tasty grouper sandwich and the Parmesan fries were pretty good too. The shishito peppers were great, and the sriracha mayo packed a punch. There aren't a ton of vegetarian options, but I'm excited to see how the menu changes and evolves. Great vibe! read more

The food is pretty uninspired - the menu is really just like a slightly more expensive Applebee's. The staff isn't very friendly - the hostess was aloof and the waitstaff didn't really seem to care too much about taking care of the table. The location is beautiful, the decorations and outdoor space are awesome. But the food is uninteresting and only of okay quality and with the poor service I would definitely go somewhere else. There are so many awesome restaurants at the Pearl that I would never waste my time at this place again. read more

Very nice building although indoors is quite noisy. The menu was unimaginative and the food disappointing. We had onion rings to start and they arrived luke warm, the chopped steak or Chopped Con was bland and also not steaming hot. The Thai Steak Salad was good and I'd get that again, however it's unlikely we'll try this place again soon. read more

We love Down on Grayson. I've had the burger, the turkey sandwich, the chicken sandwich, french dip and the JK Club. I love the club and the turkey. The Double Dip is an excellent take on cheese and guacamole. The brussels sprouts are also a hit. The wife and kids will not leave with out dessert. The strawberry cake is to die for with the coconut cake not far behind. The building is wonderful and the outdoor seating super. We think Down on Grayson has got it all. read more

My first time ever eating here. I had lunch with two new people I met at a conference. The food & atmosphere were great. My only issue was bill. The two people I ate lunch with paid with a credit card & I paid cash. I had the turkey sandwich that comes with fries & had a water--$12 + tax. I paid with a twenty dollar bill. The waitress never came back with my change, even though we established she would be back with my change after she brought back the credit cards for the two people I ate with to sign off on. She didn't come back & we had the hostess find her, as we would be late getting back to the conference. She came back with $2 as my change. So she basically gave herself a really big tip. She can keep the big tip she gave herself & the $2 she brought back to me. I was not aware that Down on Grayson that when you pay cash, don't expect to get any change back. read more

One of the best restaurants in the Pearl. Ambience was enjoyable and even though the wait to be seated was around 40 minutes, the food was worth the wait. The Char burger was one of the best burgers I've had in SA. My wife had the fish tacos which were also very good. I highly recommend this place. read more

This is a super cute little restaurant in downtown San Antonio! Right next to The Pearl! Very cute location, environment is nice. Food is good, cocktail drinks are great as well! Only downfall... was the SERVICE!! The service of the Hosts were nice, really friendly ladies. The WAITRESS was a different story! She only came to our table to check on us like 2 times. And in those 2 times.. she didn't speak clearly, she was mumbling, with her attitude and just plain RUDE! She didn't even ask if we were finished eating, when she just came & assumed we were done, & picked up our plates! Just plain HORRIBLE! And also, expect to be waiting for your food for over an hour.. because that's exactly what happened. read more

I'll admit that walking up to this place I assumed it was gonna be another "hip,trendy" restaurant that people from Austin rave about but that is rarely good and usually overpriced. I was pleasantly surprised. We arrived and it was pretty busy. All the tables were taken and we were told it would be 20 mins so we waited at the bar for a couple drinks. I ordered a Kentucky Lemonade I think is what it was called and my boyfriend ordered a beer. Bartender was very friendly and fast. They even gave up drink menus immediately without us having to ask. That really impressed be. The drink was good and I feel like I got enough liquor for my money. We were seated shortly after and our waitress was the best! She was knowledgable about the menu items and her suggestions never let me down. The tortilla soup was excellent. House salad was good although ordinary. I ordered the club sandwich and it was tasty although again it was just ordinary. The fries, however, were delicious. Best I've had in a while. The waitress then suggested we try the strawberry cake so we ordered it. I cannot begin to describe the perfection of that cake. It was a giant slice of cake that I ended up finishing at home for the next two days. If everything else had been terrible about my dining experience, I would have forgiven it all after a taste of that cake. I'll end my review by saying the service went above and beyond my expectations and I will definately be going back. Don't let the trendy appearance fool you, this is an extremely reasonably priced restaurant that you will go back to again and again. The fish tacos were good, but I don't understand why they would only use a single corn tortilla. It was completely mush and impossible to pick up. I would've given 4-5 stars but when I asked the staff and mgmt about udon two corn tortillas (which I figured is standard) I was brushed off and told that's how they typically order it but that it doesn't come like that. read more

This place is more like a bar than a restaurant. Patrons come and basically hang out all night leaving a Long wait and no ability to estimate correct wait time for waiting guests. Food is just ok and strawberry cake looks pretty but lacks flavor. read more
