We stayed in Lahaina for 10 days and probably ate at Down the Hatch 6-7 times. Their breakfast is to die for. Great drink specials, easy to get to location, fair prices. Whatever you do, get the aunties omelette with goat cheese and a side of their breakfast fried rice. Unreal. The Lahaina Sunrise is a bit sweet, but their mimosas and screwdrivers are amazing. Had a great breakfast at Down the Hatch. I got the French toast which I was reluctant to get. It was decisions though. Comes with a Hawaiian ice cream made from passion fruit. The maple syrup wasn't needed at all. The pork belly Benedict was good but I'm not a pork belly person. It was cooked perfectly though. The fresh orange juice taste like oranges (shocking right?). Would not recommend for dinner. The only thing good was the lava shrimp appetizer and the snow cones. The lobster grilled cheese was way too buttery and sweet would be better on sourdough bread. The nachos that came with the burrito were cold and gross. We went to breakfast as well and the breakfast was good but pretty average wouldn't say it was excellent but not gross. I dont know why this place has such a high rating. The atmosphere is like an outdoor cafeteria, there's no table service, you have to order as you walk in which sends the line up the stairs and onto the walkway since it's so slow. They don't take names, you just have to stand there. When we asked the desk clerk how the pork was flavored he said it tastes like pork. Seriously.? We moved to a couple of different tables, it's self seating. Each one was wet and had dirty cups and wet napkins on them. And when the food finally got to us, it was luke warm and mediocre at best. Came here on my way to the airport for breakfast as the othe joint originally planned was closed. Parking around here kinda sucks since it is a popular weekend area and lots to here. Location - Prime with so many options here in the plaza. Service - Staff here was hella on point and very nice. Venue - Chill outdoors feel but yet still covered, with football on Sundays, and a local singer that just makes everything feel chill. Prices - Drink specials are unbeatable for the price and portion you get. Food - Food was so good as it had a really authentic fresh taste to it. How does this have so many positive reviews?! It was so bad I want to give you a zero, but that's not possible so I give you a one. This place couldn't be worse if it tried. You read the menu off glitchy TV screens to start. Then you order at a counter before sitting down and pay and tip before even receiving your food. After ordering you're handed a smelly water glass to serve yourself the most foul tasting water while you wait. On the way to choose a table, which are in the middle of shopping center, we were thrown our drinks by bartenders walking around. The barstools were covered in sticky goo. Now, the bad: -typical, "Hawaiin" menu, which to me means: 4 types of fish, your choice of cooking style (grilled, blackened, cajun, and __________________). Small fish portion. -my fish came with baby carrots and broccoli, which I swear came out of a frozen bag. -my blackened, small fish was extraordinarily salty, which I guess passes for 'fresh' and 'flavorful?' -also ordered the fish tacos. Not bad but honestly, once you pour the fresh salsa and whatever sauce on top, how can anyone really tell the difference between fresh fish and just ordinary fish. Came here for dinner. Great service from everyone we encountered. Here's what we ordered: Lobster and crab stuffed grilled cheese - Pretty good. I only wish it was more "temperature" hot. Which is how I like my dishes. I really remember the sauce that was on it. Was just the right amount. Surf and Turf Burger- Wow!!! Sooo good!! Had the lava lava shrimp on top of the burger patty. Which was really tasty!! I like when you can really taste the meat. Kids got the: Chicken and waffles- I didn't get to taste it, but my daughter really like it! Mermaid chicken tenders- I didn't taste it either, but there was a lot of sauce on it. My daughter ate most of what wasn't covered. My wife and I ended up here almost by accident, since the place we wanted to go to for breakfast had a long wait. Found Down the Hatch by its Yelp reviews. We were very impressed with the quality of the food, so we came back again a few days later. It's an order-at-the-counter-and-we'll-bring-your-food-to-the-table kind of place. But the high quality of the cooking and presentation belie that. This is tourist-oriented, very hipster cooking, with moderate prices and portion sizes. If you want simple/filling/"authentic" diner food there are other places that will suit you better (Kihei Caffe, for example). But for us, on vacation, wanting something that looked and tasted good in a pleasant setting, it worked just fine. The seating's in a sunny courtyard, which is just what you want in Hawaii most of the time -- but it was very hot when we were there and the sun was especially intense, so we were scrambling for shade. The live music was very pleasant. At breakfast I got a Lava Lava Shrimp & Avocado Omelet, my wife got the Huevos Rancheros. We were happy with our food and the speed of the service, except for one big thing: I have a dairy sensitivity, and asked for my omelet with no cheese. I was most of the way through eating it when I saw it had cheese in it. I pulled the rest out and I didn't get sick, but c'mon, guys, you could really hurt someone that way. One star off for that. At lunch on our second trip I ordered the Summer Strawberry Spinach Salad, and they got it right. All in all, if you're a tourist in Lahaina and want that beautiful food/beautiful spot vibe you'll probably really enjoy this place. read more
