Beautiful place with amazing food! Nestled into the lower area of a shopping center, the atmosphere is welcoming and the staff is very friendly. We had a coupon for Lava Lava shrimp with a purchase of an entree, so decided to give it a try along with the crispy fish tacos. Both did not disappoint! It was a great place to go and sit because of the friendly atmosphere. The fish in my opinion taste better than most of the other restaurants I tried on my trip and I literally ate there everyday for lunch for a whole week. I tried a lot of thing on the menu but my favorite was the whole fried fish, I would do anything for the recipe to the sauce they put on top of it with the lemon. Holy guacamole! This place legit. We were out looking for a breakfast spot that was open. After a failed first attempt at finding a place, we found Down the Hatch. Divine Intervention? I think so. The staff was so incredibly welcoming and friendly. The menu was amazing and I struggled to pick just one thing. The Southern Chicken Biscuits 'n Gravy Benny was recommended and it did not disappoint. The fried chicken was cooked to perfection. Not overly breaded. Just enough. It paired beautifully with the poached eggs, biscuits and gravy. I could go on and on. Oh? This place is pretty awesome! Has such a fun environment located in downtown Lahaina with the best happy hour! Not to mention they are open late ...2am on weekends. Some tip: get in line and order your food first and then grab any open seating.. if you've got a large party split up and have one person order and others scout for food! It's is very very busy here so that's the challenging part. In terms of food, it's a very cool menu.. they have lava sauce which adds a twist to you standard fish entrees! We had the lava crispy shrimp tacos and Baja tacos... the lava sauce is pretty awesome! From happy hour they had pina coladas and the sweeter version with the strawberry purée called a lava drink I believe .. stuck to the standard one and it was average.. what you'd expect spending $5. A very good " must stop" if in the area , very good food and service is great, staff are so friendly and menu is easy to read, it can get busy so you might have to wait in a short line, oh live music to . Racist waiting staff. We were placed at a table too small for our group, and in the worst possible location next to the walkway, despite there being equivalent or larger sized tables closer to the center of the dining area. We inquired with a waiter about moving tables, to which our request was granted. However, a second waiter then yelled at us to return to our original table, citing COVID restrictions. Clearly, this wasn't actually the case, as the table was immediately given to the next group of diners, which was the same size as ours. To make matters worse, we were completely ignored by waiting staff for the rest of the night. Any time we tried to flag one down, they would just glance at us and keep walking. This behavior was exhibited by the second waiter mentioned above, as well as two others. The discrimination was implicit, but fairly obvious considering we were the only patrons of our particular skin color in the whole restaurant. This was a very shocking experience, and definitely not one we would have expected, considering the overwhelming hospitality that we've been shown at every other establishment on Maui. Despite everything else, we had no complaints about the food! Probably some of the best we've had on Maui, and at more than reasonable prices. If the problem with the waiting staff is resolved, we will consider returning here during a future trip. read more

Literally took 63 minutes to get our food BUT the staff told us that up front before we ordered. 4 stars because some of the seating is not comfortable. It's super hot with not a lot of circulation. I'm down for casual but there were also bird droppings on some tables. And they weren't fresh. But that's the only reason. The food is really great! read more

The location here is everything. This restaurant takes up the bottom floor/courtyard of The Wharf. They have live music every night and the drinks are strong. There is always a line, but it moves pretty quickly since you order at the counter and then they bring it to your table. I had the shrimp appetizer and my friend had the sweet potato tacos. Both were delicious. I definitely recommend coming here if you are staying in Maui. read more

My wife and I were exploring Lahaina and Down the Hatch popped up as one of the top results on Yelp so we had to check it out. My wife wanted the Baja chicken tacos, but they were out of the shredded chicken. She doesn't eat seafood so we asked if we could put the chicken tenders in the tacos instead and the employees pulled it off! I got the crab and lobster grilled cheese and it was delicious! Following all rave reviews about Down the Hatch we gave it a try. Line was quick moving which was really nice. Venue was nice - love the open air dining. I wasn't particularly hungry so I just ordered the Poke appetizer. I found it a bit salty but the biggest offender was the gluey rice that the Poke was served on top of. Any self respecting Asian would NEVER allow such a travesty such as that to happen to their rice. I was so so disappointed with that rice as it was such a foundation for my appetizer it really was a downer. Plus side - Lava Lava shrimp was the bomb. No wonder they make you pay before you're served. This by far was the worst breakfast and food I had in Hawaii. Our food was cold I ordered chicken and waffles and my wife ordered the Ahi Bene and breakfast potatoes. We sent the food back and we received our new partially Luke warm food in less than five mins. I believe the food is pre prepped and put in the microwave. My chicken was soooo dry it was like eating deep fried sand. The potatoes were gross and cold and potatoes are by far my favorite food in the entire world. The Ahi tuna was cold and rubbery. We also noticed that the people sitting next to us left about 60% of their food on the plate and left. We went for happy hour and ordered lava shrimp, fish and chips, chicken lava sandwich, fish tacos and mora lava shrimp oh and, mai tai and pina colada. Happy hour offers 15% and drink specials.
