I got the Fish Sandwich with the local catch (today's was Ono- yum!!!!), my hubby got the fish & fries, and we shared a piña colada (hey, we are both kinda lightweights! Don't judge). I stopped by here this past Wednesday night with my wife for dinner. We found Down The Hatch through all of their good reviews on Yelp and were even more excited whenever we found some coupons in a free magazine. It's located on the bottom level of the Wharf Cinema Shops right on Front Street in Lahaina. It has a counter where you order your food and then you take your number and find a table to sit at. Since it's located in the mall it's tables are amongst the "river" that flows through it. It also has a bar with some large TV's nearby. For dinner on this occasion I decided to have the fish and chips while my wife went with the fish tacos, 1 crispy and 1 grilled. Since we had two coupons we rang ourselves up separately with my wife getting a free lava lava shrimp appetizer while I ended up with a free small shave ice (non alcoholic) from breakwell next door. Our shrimp came our first and were quite good. They were served in a silver martini glass on a bed of greens. Even though the shrimp themselves were small, they packed quite a big flavor. They were fried perfectly with a nice and crisp exterior with the shrimp cooked perfectly inside. Whenever you combined that with the sauce they were pretty awesome and I was very stoked to have gotten that app for free with the purchase of an entree. Once we had finished the app our entrees came. My fish and chips consisted of 4 pieces of fish with shoestring fries and tartar sauce on the sides. Both the fish and the fries were cooked nicely with a crispy exterior and hot and soft interior. The fries were seasoned nicely too and had a great taste to them. Meanwhile my fish was decent too and I especially liked it paired with the tartar sauce. My wife ended up enjoying her tacos and loved the fact that she could choose one crispy and one grilled instead of being forced into two of one kind. The bottom line for me is that I would stop by here again in the future. All of our food was pretty good, especially the lava lava shrimp. read more

Down The Hatch is one of my favorite places to eat and hangout on Maui! The food is delicious, they have a really good selection to choose from in the menu. One of my favorites is the Fish Taco with the mango salsa. I can't get enough of it!!! And the açaí bowl is te best one I ever had! Seriously!!! So they're okay, but overall kinda just overpriced for what you're getting. The lava shrimp looks fancy but the entire bottom half is cabbage so as soon as you get past the top shrimp you realize it wasn't as good of a deal cuz that's it haha. Lobster and crab Mac and cheese is apparently one of their top sellers. I think grilled cheese is kind of misleading as there wasn't any cheese and more of a weird lobster and crab roll but on a toasted sandwich... Fries that came with it were crap though. Zero seasoning and zero flavor. We both commented on how bad they were. They have a big happy hour from 2-6 but drinks only so maybe the great reviews are coming from the really drunk patrons?... This place was a perfect lunch spot if you didn't make reservations but coming after 12pm gets super crowded. It's a first come, first serve restaurant that's outdoors and good if you have a loud little one like us. The fish and fries were good especially the fries and the bathroom was cute and clean. The only downside is that there's no changing table in the bathroom which made it super tough to change my little guy. The service and staff were great. Food: This is where they really excelled. The food was amazing and cooked very well. I ordered the chicken sandwich and my wife the burger. Both were very succulent and tasted delicious. First visit! My husband and I couldn't resist the excellent reviews. MUST GET- coconut shrimp appetizer. My husband also loved his lava flow drink. SKIP- The spicy chicken sandwich. It wasn't that spicy and was just too saucy and too cheesy. Who thought there could be such a thing! My husband also got the crab and lobster grilled cheese which we probably wouldn't get again. The lobster and crab wasn't very flavorful and it also was just a cheesy goopy mess. The soft bread doesn't help. But we love the concept of walking up and ordering and then sitting with your meal. And yes, the coconut shrimp are a must get. Next time we'll get the crowd pleaser- the lava lava shrimp. read more

DTH is a great vibe! Came here for dinner (about 4:30p) and stood in line for about 20 minutes before being able to find our own seats. The longest process was just ordering (you have to order at the counter first before finding your seat or being seated). After that, the food came rather quickly. Music playing and TVs on! This place was awesome. I had the Lava Shrimp. Incredible. Very good. My wife had the coconut shrimp and it was good too. My only concern was the seating. We were jammed in between two tables and it was not cozy but overcrowded. So much so that it distracted me from enjoying our time there. It's basically a bar. Our favorite meal on vacation! We've been in Maui 7 days and wish we would have eaten here first so we had time to come back. The live music is great, the portions are big, the staff is friendly, the cost is reasonable, and the food is top-notch! We ate the following: Coconut shrimp. This is something we have ordered every place we have eaten and this was hands-down the best. Lava fries. The lava lava sauce is good on EVERYTHING. Macadamia nut encrusted Mahi. The side salad with sweet potatoes, mango/pineapple chutney, and pickled onions was one of the best things I've eaten. So fresh. Lobster and crab grilled cheese. Enough said. Mermaid lava bites. Awesome chicken tenders with bacon and lava lava sauce. Sampler platter. Pulled pork and calamari and other deliciousness. All of the above was only $116. Unheard of on the Island! The best dinner I had during my trip was here at Down The Hatch! My boyfriend and I shared the Lobster & Crab Grilled Cheese, which was perfectly sliced into four pieces and filled with so much flavor and cheesy goodness. Since we purchased an entree, we received a free Lava Lava Shrimp appetizer with a coupon that we got from The Snorkel Store. The Lava Lava Shrimp was AMAZING. The shrimp pieces were crispy and deliciously sweet and spicy. I recommend trying it. We came during Happy Hour (2-6pm), which offered 20% off apps and $3-5 drink specials. Their Lava Flow was tasty and refreshing. We enjoyed our meal in their outdoor seating. Tables were limited even with seats at the bar, but luckily we came during a weeknight, so it was easy to get a table. They're open pretty late until 2am with the kitchen closing at midnight. It was very efficient and the wait was about 15 minutes. If you are around the Lahaina downtown area, then swing by for a quick lunch/dinner. When you walk in, get your ID out, this is definitely a spot to hang out late night since it's one of the few open late hours. DJ that night was actually pretty good. Cashier tells my friend she can NOT order drinks with him and that we do that at the bar. But I was told the opposite and that the drink and food would be brought to me when I sit down. Half hour later...after food is all out...my drink never came. I ordered a lava flow. When proceeding to the bar they were nice to tell me I was supposed to walk there to get the drink after I ordered and paid at the other counter....anyways...super watery? Shootz! This place is super cool especially when they have a good artist playing some tunes. My friend Fede works there and he's gotten me and all our friends hooked on the place. You can catch him bar-backing most nights. He's the life of the party. The shave ice at breakwall, located on the edge of the restaurant, is amazing. You've gotta try this spot if you're in Lahaina. A couple of comments before my review.... First, a place that gets 700+ reviews and is 4 1/2 stars is likely to be excellent; DTH delivered on this expectation, which makes it a must visit place when you're near Lahaina. Second, the service is excellent for a place that combines self-service with sit-down service. Every person I encountered was friendly, helpful and made me feel welcome. If you want white linen and doting service, go to that type of restaurant; if you want excellent food, a casual fun vibe, and don't mind grabbing your own table setting, this is a place you should experience. As for the food...let's just say it was food for the soul. We started with Bacon and Sprouts (fried Brussel sprouts and bacon served in an aluminum-martini bowl). The sprouts had a crunch to them as if they were still freshly picked and the bacon and breading flavors combined to perfection. We also tried the Ahi Samurai, which was my favorite dish of the night. Its perfectly balanced savory flavors made the ahi and crostini the stars of the evening. For our main course, we had Lobster and Crab Stuffed Grilled Cheese. The lava lava sauce and cheese were delicate and did not mask the delicious lobster and crab, but instead worked well to add flavor. This dish was very well balanced right down to the thick toast used to hold it together. We also tried the Macadamia-Crusted Mahi, which had hand crushed nuts and was cooked to perfection. A busy place on Front street with great food. We had the St. Patricks day special corned beef which was very good and also lean. Our friend had the fresh Mahi Tacos and she shared one with us. Looked like from talbes around us that you can order pan friend or deep fried. We ordered the pan friend which was great. The place is busy though we found a nice table and enjoyed our meal. My favorite things to order are their lava lava shrimp, chicken and waffles, and the lobster and crab stuffed grilled cheese.
