Down the Hatch Maui came with some high recommendations and as a result, expectations. We tried the establishment a couple of different times and everything was just "OK". My wife and I tried Down the Hatch for breakfast, first. I had the pork belly benedict and the dish was flavorful and fresh but didn't really have the "wow" factor that a lot of other places I've been to both on the island and back on the mainland have. We were visiting Maui with our 2.5 year old for a week and after testing a few restaurants and food trucks, this was the place we ate at 3 times! Warning: if you are going for dinner, arrive early, starting 5:40 pm the line was starting to form and it usually wraps down the street and around the corner. After yesterday's lackluster experience at the Royal Lahaina, we were looking for a most-important-meal-of-the-day-worthy breakfast. We were going to check out another recommendation on Yelp, but as fate would have it, they were closed for the holidays. The place is really nice, the restaurant is located in a courtyard, I must admit it was cozy in there. I am sure at night with the light would look amazing! We ordered the famous ¨lobster and crab stuffed grilled cheese¨ and also ¨lava lava spicy chicken sandwich¨. Both were good, the lobster sandwich was something different which you don´t find anywhere, the lava lava was also tasty but perhaps too heavy with the crispy chicken. I am wondering when it became ok for a waiter / staff person to yell rude comments into a group of people waiting in line to eat and drink on a Friday afternoon? I have been coming to DTH for years and yesterday my group was basically told to piss off and embarrassed. We were in line waiting to order, my wife stepped out of the line to look around for what tables were available to only be accosted by the server screaming at her to get in line. Needless to say he was not only in the wrong but that's not the Aloha spirit or customer service. He was a jerk and to talk to anyone that way is unacceptable. We took our group who was visiting for the first time to Kimos instead as they were embarrassed to stay. I didn't even know how to respond... Sadly we won't be back to DTH and I am sending letter to management. You lost respectable patrons who love your food and atmosphere. Located on the bottom floor of the shopping center right next to a bar and a shave ice shop, this place opens up to a bunch of shaded tables around the Koi pond. It's a perfect spot for casual food with excellence. Well down DTH. During our most recent visit to Maui, my wife and I visited DTH for the first time. We had breakfast and happy hour in the same day, separated by a visit to Kohola Brewery just a little up the road. For breakfast, my wife got the Rocket Burrito, which is basically a deep-fried burrito with just eggs, chorizo, and potatoes inside, and a side of Lava Lava sauce. I got the other breakfast burrito, which had bacon, Kahlua pork, eggs, onions, peppers, and a side of Lava Lava sauce as well. Mine was a little meatier than I would have liked, but it was really tasty, and it came with a side of delicious home fry potatoes, while my wife's came on some Spanish rice. Gourmet and interesting, but simple and good. When we came back for happy hour that afternoon, we each got a discount cocktail, then ordered the Lava Lava shrimp, Mermaid Fries, and fried Brussels sprouts. The shrimp and fries were fantastic, while the Brussels were good, but not our favorite. The price for both meals combined was less than many of the other restaurants in the Lahaina village area, and certainly delicious and filling. DTH is doing it right, and I look forward to coming back again. UPDATE: We went back for dinner after the awesome Trilogy Excursions Lana'i tour and got the $22 lobster and crab grilled cheese, which was featured on DDD. That's a hefty sum to pay for grilled cheese, but this one is legit worth it. Amazing textures combine buttery bread with melty cheese, firm tomatoes, and tender bits of lobster and crab combine so well with the Lava Lava sauce in the sandwich. My friends and I had lunch here while exploring Lahaina Town and had a great experience! We came around 11am on a Sunday and it was busy but not too long of a wait in line, with seats still available. You order at the counter and then grab a seat, all outdoors, mostly shaded. Order came out quickly, service was good, and the food was delicious! This place is on the pricier side but the portions are also quite generous and the atmosphere is nice. This sandwich is super disappointing. The seasoning is overpowering so you can't taste the seafood - a sign that they don't take pride in the quality of ingredients. Even the cheese is whack - and it's called a grilled cheese. Boo! Boo-urns. - lava lava shrimp - overbreaded 40-50 count shrimp. The rice was dry (not enough water when it was cooked OR been out too long). Best thing was the broccoli and that's just SAD. Down the Hatch are my children's absolute favorite restaurant in Lahaina! Everytime we visit Maui we have to eat here multiple of times in order for them to be satisfied. My kids called this place "Crispy's" because it reminds them of an episode of Big City Green. They are located downstairs and the seatings are outdoorsy even though it's downstairs. You know what I mean? It's like a courtyard type of setting. You order and pay first. You get a number and they bring you the food. The last time we came here we waited extremely long for the food but my family didn't want to be Karens so we waited patiently and they did apologize for the long wait when they brought out the food. Everything was extremely good like usual! My kids always get the chicken and waffle and fish and chips. I always like to try something different because the goal in life is to try everything on the menu eventually haha. The keiki meal come with a token you can exchange for a kid size shaved ice next door. They also have baby boosters and baby highchairs. I was really happy the worker strapped the booster for me so I didn't have to do it! Overall my family loves this place for the yummy food, kind staff and fun ambiance. It's just a really great place to hang out and eat good food! They always have a long line but they are conveniently opened very early and closes really late. Slightly fried shrimp in a spicy sweet light mayo style sauce over a bed of napa cabbage, it hit the spot. Although the spice does build up like a volcano about to erupt....aptly named dish! Napa cabbage is a good base to cool your mouth from the heat. We also ordered the much touted lobster and crab grilled cheese and it too was spicy! It wasn't quite as good as the shrimp in my opinion, so if back in Lahaina I would probably order something different next time. The fries were tasty too. You order at the counter and then find a seat. We got 20% off with a yelp check in which was a nice surprise. Yum There's a reason that this place is getting to be soooooo popular and difficult to get a table at. It's REALLY GOOD! We both had the same breakfast biscuit sandwiches there last week and thought that they were very good. The mimosa pitcher is a great way to sip and eat for a while. It's an odd set up. There is a full bar, a window to order your food and a small, open area with a few high top bars and tables. The restaurant itself is open, with live music and seating by a bar, under a roof, or in the open by a stream with koi fish and turtles.
