So we went back about a week and a half later and we had a great time. Food tasted a lot better this time, we ordered different things so I don't know whether the items were better or whether our expectations have been tempered after being in Maui for this period of time. It's always a kid friendly environment, staff very nice, prices are reasonable and as opposed to almost everywhere else, there is not an excessive wait. read more

We went on our anniversary and spent the afternoon. Once we got there it was very hard to leave. The live music was so good. The drinks were reasonable and the food was delicious. Make sure you check out their happy hour and the big banyon tree across the way! read more

Down the Hatch, down the pie hole...as long as it goes in my mouth that's all that matters. We arrived in Hawaii and I was ready to eat. It was no surprise the minute I got off the plane finding food was the plan. I had Down the Hatch bookmarked for dinner and breakfast. Too bad I couldn't order both all at once. When we went for dinner we ordered: -CRISPY COCONUT SHRIMP: sweet Thai chili sauce, mango salsa, and fresh coconut -MERMAID FRIES shoestring fries, truffle cheese, bacon, ranch, lava lava sauce -BAJA CHICKEN TACOS served with cabbage, mango salsa, cheese, and lava lava sauce -SEARED AHI LOTUS: Seared ahi tuna, pickled radishes, garlic rice, dusted furikake, sautéed spinach, apple cider buerre blanc, and sesame seeds. -LAVA FLOW: light rum, coconut, pineapple, and strawberry. The food was quite tasty, served nice and hot! I don't eat much shrimp but it was deep-fried and breaded so how could it be bad? Actually, the dish was so flavorful I almost forgot I was eating shrimp! The combination of the coconut and mango salsa gave it an interesting flavor. When I say interesting, I mean interesting in a good way. The Mermaid Fries were also a surprise. I'm not big on fries, calm down I'm human, but these Mermaid fries were swimming left and right into my mouth. Hold the bacon for my pork eating friend Jeff, he knows how to lick a plate clean especially if there's some pork on it. The tacos were good but they would have been better served liked they're on the menu. (My tacos were modified due to a food allergy). My body is always causing problems for me. My Lava Flow drink looked just like it sounded...an erupted volcano and came in a cute cup! It tasted good but sweet. But sweet is never a bad thing. I don't remember what my friend got but he was part of the empty cup club, didn't even leave a sip. I like menus with choices and there were plenty of items I wanted so making a choice was hard. I definitely want to come back and try more. I was just disappointed we didn't get to try breakfast. At Down The Hatch you order your food at the register and they bring it out to you. You only had to do a little work, walk up to the counter. They only have outdoor seating which was lovely, since every bit of Maui is beautiful. This place is a perfect spot to stop and get a drink but try to go for their happy hour. They were voted best bar and have the longest happy hour in Maui 2-6! If my review was boring you, I'm sure some of you have just started tuning in. They have discounts on the food and drinks, so you can drink and not go poor! Also, there is live music at night and of course a full bar that I was telling you about. They even have their adult shaved ice right next store! You might think this sounds like a lot of drinking on vacation but who's sober on vacation anyways, right? Overall Down the Hatch embodied the kickback vibe of the island and satisfied my agenda ...eat...relax...enjoy...repeat. We may have come here 3 times on a week vacation... But the food was sooo good. I got the lobster and crab grilled cheese, which may have had too much lobster and crab if I would complain about anything... LOL The fish tacos were also super fresh, tasted great. We also tried the french toast, it was good, but the chicken and waffles looked AMAZING, next time I would definitely try those. read more

For this to be a touristy place, it was pretty great! The staff were genuinely friendly and helpful. The food was consistently amazing and we wound up eating here twice during our stay. It was even open on Thanksgiving which was great given most places are closed. The lava lava shrimp tacos and fish tacos were my favorite. The coconut shrimp and calamari were bomb too. I don't think you can go wrong with anything on the menu to be honest. The vibe was great too! They had great music and they showed various games on the TVs by the bar. To make things better, there is a great shave ice spot right next to it that we also had a couple times. Definitely give this place a try if you are visiting Maui. read more

We just missed their breakfast (they stop serving at 10:30 am), and so when we went to place our order, they told us we would have a bit of a wait as the kitchen was still preparing to serve lunch. Other than the wait, everything else was good! We got the Local Fish Tacos (grilled or crispy) and Sweet Potato Tacos. Both were served with cabbage, mango salsa, cheese, and lava lava sauce and a side of chips and salsa. The chips and salsa weren't that spectacular but the tacos were good. read more

Dined at DTH last night. Obviously I didn't have the same experience as the other reviewers. I ordered macadamia nut crusted mahi and I really didn't taste any nuts and it was really crisp to the point of dry. I ate bc I was hungry though and figured in a place like that complaining doesn't do much. The coconut shrimp was ok - looked like frozen shrimp dolled up on a plate. My husband ordered the pork which was tasteless and disappointing. All in all I wouldn't return. The sandwiches served to our table neighbors looked a little better. You know bar food. What a delicious breakfast, on a Monday morning with live music. Live music on a Monday morning. Tried a mimosa carafe with POG and it was so good. POG is passion fruit, orange and guava. . . and I usually don't like guava, but I've been drinking POG on this trip to Maui. Expanding my horizons and later tried the dragon fruit mimosa and it was excellent, a bit sweeter than POG but both are super good. I'm celebrating the end of the pandemic and this is only my 2nd real vacation since 2020 so going all out sinnce I've been deprived for a couple of years . Highly recommend for breakfast: the fried rice plate. It has scrambled eggs, green onions, rice, a little soy sauce, really delicious Portuguese sausage, all topped with two fried eggs cooked perfectly. In the photo, I added some Cholula hot sauce, and it was excellent. What a cool environment, and our server at the bar, Maya, was so nice and welcoming, just a really nice person. Will definitely be back, maybe tomorrow! read more

This is probably my favorite restaurant in Maui now. Everything is so delicious Their lava lava shrimp is to die for and so is the mermaid chicken tenders. I would bathe in that sauce combo-- crispy chicken tenders with delicious (not that gross) cheese sauce and the lava lava sriracha sauce with bacon bits -- drooools We got the captains catch plate two nights in a row and it was delicious each time. Their drinks are great the ambiance is casual and outdoors The service is great I would definitely recommend this place to anyone read more

I haven't written a review in a while, but this one needs to be shared! This place is family friendly. We got the lava lava shrimp, lobster grilled cheese, and the kids got a kids fish and chips. Ordered a couple of mai tais as well. Everything was SO good! The kids even got a free dole whip with their meal. We ordered a Mai tai adult shaved ice from the shave ice next to it and it was soooo yummy. Didn't really care for the loud clubbing music but otherwise the ambiance was nice. The kids enjoyed the koi pond/river in the restaurant. FYI This is counter service. They have multiple bussers and expediters getting food out. They didn't seem too eager to help whenever you needed something. read more

SLOWEST RESTAURANT IN THE WORLD. No real service because you order at the door, get all your drinks, silverware, napkins etc. yourself and then you're seated. Make sure you have something to occupy your time because you'll be waiting at least an hour to get your food. And hopefully it's right because you'll never see a server and no one will ever check on you. read more

One of my favorite meals in Maui! I saw that Down the Hatch had been featured on Diners, Drive-ins, and Dives and suggested it to my boyfriend for lunch one day. We ended up going right when happy hour started (2-6pm every day), where they have discounted drinks as well as 20% off all appetizers. We ended up splitting a mango smoothie, the lava lava shrimp appetizer, the grilled fish salad (seared ahi), and the famous lobster and crab stuffed grilled cheese sandwich. Everything came out pretty fast and all at once. My favorite item was definitely the lobster and crab grilled cheese with the lava sauce. The lobster and crab tasted so fresh, and inside the grilled cheese it was a match made in heaven! The seared ahi salad was refreshing and the mango salsa added some sweetness to it. The ahi was seared perfectly and I really liked the dressing that came with the salad. The lava lava shrimp was a yummy app, but we ended up taking most of it home to throw in some tacos later. We definitely ordered too much, lol! The mango smoothie just tasted like mango nectar blended with ice. The ambiance was definitely fast-casual, but we liked it! It was a fun spot to chill, watch surfing on tv and there was also a huge ceiling fan that cooled us off during our meal. read more

Fun outdoor place in Lahaina. Great after a day of sightseeing or shopping. Very casual and line too order food at dinner time. Surprisingly the live moved quickly and there are plenty of tables. Maui Maui Wowie!! Where do I start? First time visiting this little gem and it certainly left an impression on me. Located in downtown Lahaina, Down The Hatch is truly one of a kind. It's location is perfect. The atmosphere is extremely laid back and the staff is friendly. Came here after a recommendation and had the lava lava shrimp as well as the lobster and crab stuffed grilled cheese. The shrimp was amazing and very tasty. The presentation was great but the taste even greater. The stuffed grilled cheese is something like I have never tried before. They definitely did not skimp on the lobster or the crab. The bread was soft and decadent. Each bite called for one more. Certainly something I have never tried before and would have it again over and over. They also have t-shirts and other gear for sale. Their hats are very unique and specific to this location with a cool logo on the front. There are other things on the menu that were with a try but I just didn't have the time nor space in my stomach to try them all. I will certainly be back and for that reason Down The Hatch has earned my 5 stars and I can not wait to go back there again. Aloha!! read more

We wanted to check this place out since it was on Diners Drive Ins and Dives. We got the coconut shrimp with Guy Fieri recommended, and it was amazing! We also got pog drinks and they were strong, which was a pleasant surprise. I was impressed to see the staff really hustling. One server who was delivering food, had a very quick pace, and the other staff were quick to clean down tables. This place shares its seating/tables with multiple businesses in the area, so the water/utensils/napkins are actually located at another business, which can be a little confusing. The koi pond/river in the seating area is a nice feature. Update - I received a nice response from the manager below and it appears that the Koi pond is on a cleaning schedule, and is due to be cleaned in the near future. Thank you from the parents who are trying to keep their toddler entertained. The restaurant is located below street level, and for those with strollers and/or wheelchairs there is an elevator to reach the business. The problem is you need to go up a half flight of stairs to get to the elevator. At that point it would make more sense to walk down the flight of stairs to get to the restaurant. Perhaps there is a ramp to access the elevators at the back of the building, however there is no sign stating how to get to the elevator. read more

Our first trip to DTH did not disappoint. We try to always sit at the bar and enjoy meeting people and interacting with the staff. The drinks, service and food were great and our conversation with Phil was outstanding. He truly lives Aloha and I love how he embraces the motto of 'Just be a good person'. History

Established in 2015.

Established in September 2015, Down the Hatch was started by three childhood friends from Georgia. Javier Barberi, Dave Fincher and Julian Bonfardin studied hospitality management in college and moved to Maui after graduation. They worked in different areas of the service industry for several years before launching out on their own. They wanted a restaurant/bar catering to the community and guests of the beautiful island of Maui - and Down The Hatch was born.

Meet the Business Owner: Javier Julian Dave B.

Javier, Dave and Julian started Down the Hatch in September 2015. These three have known each other since they were 7 years old in Georgia. Having worked in restaurants since they were teens, they decided to open one on their own and now they are living their dream. yes all tacos can be made with hand made corn tortillas, sandwiches in gluten free buns, and salads without bread. No we have a tiny kitchen, anything fried has gluten. Mahalo

For two entrées, one appetizer, and two non-alcoholic drinks, our total came to more than $110. That is difficult to justify when both the portion sizes and overall service fell short. Bottom line We understand that Maui is expensive and that restaurants face high operating costs. Still, charging premium prices should come with generous portions, consistently good food, and genuinely hospitable service. Aloha Mixed Plate may have a beautiful new space, but at these prices, it feels overhyped and not like a good value. We hope they reconsider the portion sizes and customer experience, because the lack of aloha and the high prices could easily turn visitors away rather than make them want to return.

I recently visited "Down the Hatch" in Lahaina, Maui and had mixed feelings about my experience. The food itself was quite impressive, but a few factors prevented it from being a great dining spot. Firstly, let's talk about the positives. The fish and chips were undeniably fresh, although I must caution others to be careful as they were served piping hot. The lobster crab grilled cheese was a delightful combination, although it leaned towards the sweeter side. The coconut shrimps were a highlight and left me craving for more. The flavors were on point, and I thoroughly enjoyed the dishes. However, the restaurant's location posed a significant challenge. The Hawaiian humidity was unavoidable, and it made the dining experience uncomfortable. If only the seating arrangement was more spacious, it would have alleviated the issue. The cramped seating detracted from the overall enjoyment, and it felt a bit suffocating. Additionally, the presence of a koi fish river or pond seemed like a charming touch initially. Unfortunately, it attracted mosquitos, making the outdoor seating area a haven for these bothersome insects. It would have been much better if measures were taken to address this issue. Another aspect that made me uncomfortable was observing the bigger fish devouring the smaller ones in the pond. It was a bit off-putting and affected my appetite. While some may find it interesting, it personally detracted from my dining experience. We had the pleasure of stopping by for breakfast, and I must say, it was an unforgettable experience. After placing our order, we received a number and found a cozy spot to sit and enjoy the morning. The food at Down the Hatch is simply outstanding! Each dish we ordered was cooked to perfection, bursting with flavor, and made with the freshest ingredients. Whether you're a sweet or savory breakfast lover, they have something to satisfy every palate. Their breakfast options are varied, and each dish we tried was a winner. Now, the only aspect that gave us a moment's pause was the self-service nature of certain amenities. I have been coming to Down the Hatch since the doors were opened in 2015. The diversity in services is by far unmatched by any other operation on the island. The breakfast options are by far the best around leaving no exception for lunch and diner as well. And an occasional late-night cocktail with live music, live D.J is always a fun way to share the local community vibe and an environment that totally brings the Aloha. And the professionalism Dave Fincher and his staff brings should not be overlooked. I feel safe bringing my wife, friends, and family without any worries. Really the most fun with the utmost attention to responsible behavior from both sides of the bar. Totally a true class act from every aspect. We were in Maui in January 2018 to see whales ... and did we see whales! We made it back to Maui this September for our wedding anniversary (43rd). In both visits, we came to Down the Hatch (twice this latest trip!). Low prices on happy hour drinks ... and good long hh hours, 2-6! Great tasting Lava Lava shrimp appetizer, with 20% discounts on some menu items during happy hour. It's a great place to visit, especially after flying in that day. While it may be 4pm HST, flying in from CA means it's 7pm and HUNGRY. Happy hour = dinner time for us! Nothing wrong with saving a few bucks dining in HI. DTH has become one of our GOTOs whenever we come to Maui, which has been every 8 months for the past 4 years. read more

Hippest new spot in Lahaina! Pumped to find this place, went many times, and it always delivered. Fish tacos, Lobster Grilled Cheese (are you kidding me?! So good!), Fresh Fish... the food is great & at a good price. Can't beat the friendly service, the staff is so cool & fun. It's a laid back place, and I felt comfortable, relaxed and welcome. Try the Maui Sour cocktail or maybe the Lilikoi Martini, great mixed cocktails. Go on Saturday if you can!!! Flip night is a great opportunity to save some cash... go to pay your tab, flip a coin, call heads or tails... get it right, get 50% off your tab... if not, just pay your tab. Such a clever idea. Was in Lahaina for a week and wanted casual, so stopped in off reviews on Yelp and was delighted... Ordered at the food counter and had the fish tacos. On recommendation, tried one of each (fried and broiled) which were fantastic! Since DTH is on Front St. across from the Banyans, there's the family, day crowd coming in to grab a bite or a cool one, (try the shave ice...) then at night, there's a younger vibe with a lot of locals and a great party atmosphere. Prime central location across from the Banyan Tree and Lahaina Harbor, open-air, relaxed atmosphere and dynamite food and drinks. The staff is incredibly welcoming and makes you feel like you belong. Stop by for a mid-day drink and people-watching on Front Street, grab lunch before a boat ride, enjoy a casual dinner or make new friends at the bar for late-night drinks. My wife and I went to this place last October for our honey moon, and are we glad we did! It's somewhat tucked down on Front street in the middle of this little plaza area. They have fantastic drinks, but the Lava Shrimp appetizer was one of the best things I've ever eaten. It has a good tangy flavor to it and they don't skimp on the portions. This place was pretty bad compared to other restaurants on Front St. It actually sits below Front St. in a Mall that houses a movie theater. The seating area is really dirty, hot and uncomfortable. The staff was nice enough but for the prices you should get a cold beer not a warm beer. The biggest problem we had was the food, our entree's were pretty bad (dried pork on tacos), no lobster on grilled cheese and cold fries. The staff was trying but things just took forever. read more

Best surfer dive lounge in Lahaina! The food is absolutely spectacular... love the Lobster & Crab Grilled Cheese, the Lava Shrimp & the Chicken & Waffles. The staff is great, the food is excellent, and I like the laid back counter service. This is my first review! I hope I am doing this right! I was in Maui a few weeks ago for a family reunion (I live in Los Angeles) with my daughter. I am a single dad. We came back to Maui for our honeymoon which meant we had to hit up DTH once more! We were just as happy as we were last time. We ate more of the Lobster and Crab Stuffed Grilled Cheese and then we tried some new dishes. We tried both the Mermaid Fries and Mermaid Tenders. We also tried their quesadilla. We are near the end of our trip on Maui and I wish we had known about this place earlier. The food is great, service is great. I would highly recommend this place to anyone looking for fresh fish on the island. I had the lobster mac n cheese sandwich and my girlfriend had the poke bowl special with bacon brussel sprouts-very yummy! AND there is shave ice right next door that is also awesome! 10/10 recommend. read more

It's ok. Nothing special. Kinda expensive for what you get. Lava shrimp was good but sat on a lot of cabbage and was kinda of mushy. Taco was plain but surprisingly filling because of the chips on the side. Grilled lobster and crab was ok. Not too much meat inside . Tasted similar to a crab cake in a grilled cheese . Best food in Maui and love the atmosphere! If you go here definitely get the Mahi Mahi tacos and the coconut shrimp. Also the owner is very good looking so although it's not on the beach there's still a very good view! Nice place but the food is terrible of the four meals we had two were burnt and one was cold for a fish restaurant the best meal was the hamburger their signature grilled lobster and crab sandwiches were burnt and the fish burger was cold all the French fries were cold my advice would be stick to the burger at least the ground beef burger was good read more

It had a 1980s Ramada Inn hotel restaurant vibe. People seemed happy inside - it just seemed more like a place for folks who have visited here for decades than a place with a trendy interior. Drinks: cocktail list was a little more tropical-traditional than cutting-edge mixology, but what they make seems well done. I decided "when in Rome" - & got a frozen coconut mojito. It was definitely tasty & came with the expected brain freeze. Bread: 2 complimentary rolls (in contrast to restaurants that make you pay for fancier & tastier pull apart rolls). They were fine, not memorable. Salad: we split the MOLOKA'I WATERMELON SALAD, which was the most interesting salad on the menu: Makawao Farm arugula + Kumu Farm watermelon + sheep milk feta + Kula sweet onion + EVOO + aged balsamic. It was refreshing and tasty - and they kindly split it for us in the kitchen. Definitely big enough for two people to split, so a great value for $18. Entree: can't remember what my sweetie got but it was "some kind of meat" and he thought it was fine LOL. I got the LOCAL MUSHROOM RISOTTO: it comes with a kind of brown sauce (mushroom, cheese), rather than just being in a broth. But the rice was firm, and I really liked the local mushrooms. It won't win contests, but is a very nice (and also very generously sized) dish for a vegetarian. Overall, we had a very nice time here, though we didn't think that the food overall was quite as good as the best places we enjoyed on our vacation. If the view is spectacular during the day, then that probably tips it over the edge. But we still enjoyed our meal. Mahalo!
