Loved the interior and quick seating- order taken at the bar (no seats at tables were left, but no problem as it was just me and I was ordering take out). Got the chicken chimichanga and poutine. I think the fry oil must have been not at hot enough temp, as both were loaded with grease and not a good consistency. The poutine looked like the fries had been fried..then forgotten about and re-fried. I could not eat them- they were so gross looking and greasy...and it's *hard* to screw up poutine to the point where someone who was ravenous like I was wouldn't eat them. The portion was huge, and I'm sure if the fry oil issue hasn't been there, both dishes would have been yummy. Had a nice chat with some nice town gents at the bar, got a free soda while waiting (nice touch) from the bar keep. Downhill Grille has the best Mexican in Saranac Lake by a LONG shot!! There Takeout is timely. Service friendly. Prices are reasonable. The spinach dip is to die for and the left over makes a mean mac and cheese!! I will be back. read more

Where to begin? I have frequented the Downhill grill going back to its time in Lake Placid but I am DONE. Over the past two years the horrible experiences have driven me away. Last night was the final straw & it wasn't an isolated experience. We had a similar evening a year ago. After a short wait we were seated at which time we sat for 25 minutes until someone greeted us. We watched tables seated after us served drinks and have orders taken. We asked the hostess for help but still nothing. Eventually Jill came over and explained she wasn't our waitress but would get us started. Our waitress was the Blonde (I didn't get her name) that had avoided eye contact with us for the previous 30 mins. I am sure she was busy but at least check in. Jill continued to be our waitress but the damage was done. My brother refused to order. The only reason we stayed was because my 70 year old father didn't want to go wait again somewhere else. Things happen I understand that, but where was the management? Was it Jill? No manager came over to check on us, apologize or explain the situation. We have only dined here once, and that is for a reason. Our experience was underwhelming on our first visit. It tasted like food you would just make at home. Really, nothing special, american fare. Spaghetti, burgers, fries, etc... The waitress wasn't sure about what beers were on tap.. We had to leave our table and go up to the bar ourselves because our waitress didn't offer to ask what beers were available. read more

Dusty was our server and she was great! Ordered the burrito, chipotle chicken sandwich, and chimichanga and all were great! Great find in this mountain town. Loved the burgers!! Others had fish and chips and the pastrami/corned beef deli sandwich (can't remember the name) and enjoyed. Really liked the fries!! Desserts were ok as was the coffee although not super hot. The seating is is well-spaced and not all jammed together. Soccer finals were playing but you could also sit just far enough away to not be bothered, if that was your preference. Stopped at 2 other places but one was a little too much of a dive for us and the other looked small and crowded. We were happy to be diverted to this find. read more

Sweet potatoe fries were great, so I am told. No need to add salt to anything. Don't try to converse, you will only be frustrated. Plan on texting each other. You will need a flashlight app to read the menu. The ice water was great. Soup was the same temperature as the ice water. Sandwich had more cole slaw than meat. Ordered French onion soup. It came extremely salty I couldn't eat it. My friends ordered burritos with beef and they were happy. Another friend ordered NY steak with fries and salad and it was ok. Fries were so-so. The good thing is they open on Labor Day, it's spacious, bathrooms are dark & spacious, and they have some ok tab beer. A good staple in town. The food is consistent and tasty, most of the staff is friendly (sorry that I can't say all), atmosphere is relaxed. One of the better places to go have a drink at the bar in town where you don't feel like you are hanging out with a bunch of college kids. Overall, if you are looking for an easy and relaxed place to eat, whether with friends or family, this would be an excellent bet. read more

This place was a great find. The decor has plenty to keep you intrigued. The food was fantastic. Had a lobster and scallop queso dip that was full of all it advertised. Followed that with a huge bowl of chilli that left us saying we will definitely be back. read more

My favorite sit down restaurant in town. Their clam strip special is my favorite. Good size portions at decent prices. They also have a great selection of appetizers and drinks. It's a good place to have a sit down lunch meeting or casual dinner with the in-laws. It's the place I recommend for visitors. read more

My family spent some post Christmas vacation time last week in the North Country. We stopped at the DHG for lunch one day. We were familiar with this establishment when it was located in Lake Placid and always liked the operation. We had the Chips and Salsa. Also each of us sampled the 'TBC' ( turkey, bacon club ). As usual, the food was excellent and our waitress, Sierra, was very attentive. The prices are reasonable and the atmosphere inside is very decorative. There is a full size bar with plenty of room. This place was recommended by my host as a good local restaurant. I found it be deserving of 3 stars. The atmosphere was very noisy. There was no beer list. The salsa and chips was good, except for the flour tortilla chips which turn to mush in your mouth. The burrito is a 12 inch round flour tortilla and most of the tortilla was folded so there were many layers on the bottom, it made for a doughy bite. The meal spent to much time under the heat lamps as the rice was crusty on the top, all cheese that melted turned crusty on the plate. The refried beans were so hot that it was only towards the end of the meal they were cool enough to eat. The pork lacked much flavor. All the staff was very friendly and accommodating. I have had better food and worse, hence the 3 stars. This was my only experience at this establishment, and other items may be better. read more

One of our favorite restaurants in SL. When we lived in Lake Placid and DHG was in LP, we ate there all the time. Excellent food and great staff. We moved to SL and soon the DHG was here too. Food was merely ok and overpriced. Worse than that, however, was how the waitstaff completely ignored us. We had to get up and ask for someone to come take our order. After a long snowshoeing excursion, we stopped in the Downhill on the recommendation of a friend. We were surprised to find good fresh food without many processed ingredients. Salads were fresh and interestingly formulated rather than the standard formula mixes. We were grateful for a delicious meal that replenished our energy. Service was friendly and prompt in the large interior which also features a sports bar area. We are in the area often for hiking and canoeing, and this spot will be our preferred one for meals. read more

Stopped in to have dinner during our vacation weekend. Every person in my party of 5 was dissatisfied. The food did not taste terrible, but it was nothing to write home about. Everything was lacking in freshness. It seems like they freeze a lot of their food. Also, we were sat at a table under a bright spotlight, which was pretty uncomfortable. They charge 50¢ for take out. The medium heat wings have no heat. When I sat at the bar & ordered my take out, the bartender didn't offer me a drink. I could've used a beer. My family and I had gone to this restaurant a few years ago and my brother had gotten food poisoning... but our food was good (for us) so we decided to go back this year. However, the waitress was not very friendly and we waited for our food for an hour and a half. As we looked around, we noticed no one had food. All of us were looking at each other quite confused. After another half hour of us debating whether we should leave or not, we finally got our food (with no explanation from the waitress) and the food was good. The two previous times my wife and I were not impressed with he food, so we decided to give it another shot and it was great. I was very disappointed. My first time there was great, service was excellent and the food was just as good. The second time was the complete opposite. Awful service and the food was bland. We sat there for over an hour and only saw our waitress a couple of times. And I'm also assuming we were only allowed one water and one beer, being we finished them both before we even got our food and were never even offered a refill. rude waitress! high prices! paid nearly $17.00 for soup and a grilled cheese sandwich! when i asked why i didn't get fries, the waitress replied, "you're not a kid!", even though my bill read - kids grilled cheese $6.95, iced tea $2.50. the menu states - kids meals come with fries and a drink. she said "i could've charged you for adult grilled cheese which is $9.95!" well, i was already charged $9.45 and didn't even get the fries. point is, you can't grab a quick lunch without blowing a $20 bill. this used to be a favorite spot, but i will never darken their door again. sorry billy...this girl is going to ruin your reputation. read more
