Downtown Cafe customer experience has gone down. I was a regular customer until today. I invited my friends for breakfast and we had a very BAD experience. It took a while for the server to bring out menus, bring out drinks and silverware. Food took TOO long, and was brought in sections to the point that our meals got cold once they brought everything out. Mainly the regular special they have now, All you can eat pancakes (which is the simplest breakfast) we had to remind the server 3 times until the hostess brought it. We usually sit at the patio area because we like the vibe and normally service is good, but this time the server was lost and couldn't keep up with her tables. Overall, not sure what's happening with Downtown or management but everyone is all over the place trying to help everyone out and the experience has gotten worse. Fortunately, the server with the beard was very nice and offered us a complimentary drink for the long wait. THUMBS DOWN DOWNTOWN CAFE. Picking a new to spot to have breakfast from now on. read more

I was drawn to this place due to their wide selection of breakfast options. I found them on Instagram. We were a party of 4 and ordered the green and red chilaquiles with steak, along with a pancake breakfast and kids chicken strips. The food looked delicious but unfortunately was pretty bland and lacked seasoning. I was looking forward to the cafe the olla but it was too bitter. Service was great and ambiance was fine but for the price and lack of flavor-unfortunately will not be returning. read more

Went for a weekday lunch while in Oxnard. We sat outside on their lovely patio. It took some time to order, but with good weather we didn't mind the wait. Loved their patio and staff were hardworking and helpful. I had my toddlers and mother with me. We ordered burgers, chicken strips (kids meal) and a chicken Cesar salad. Pros: The salad with added balsamic was excellent. Tons of grilled chicken and fresh greens. The service was fantastic. Cons: The burgers and fries were super mediocre. Not fresh hamburger patties, and frozen fries. The chicken strips were a little better, but not home style. We wanted to love this place, but felt we had a mediocre meal overall. I did notice they serve breakfast and that looked really good. Will give this local spot another try! read more

We had an excellent dining experience at Downtown Cafe by JL! Our family of five adults ordered a half order of biscuit and gravy, a Build Your Own omelette & two Downtown Breakfasts, all with pancakes. The syrup is delightful; it tastes of walnut and made a wonderfully delicious addition to our buttery, fluffy pancakes. The omelette was HUGE & packed full of our requested additions of peppers, bacon, and onion, as well as topped with them; it can't just be two eggs in our opinion! Our only complaint was the ham which tasted slightly soapy to all of us. A very odd taste for meat! Our food came out so quickly that we were a bit shocked. We were seated indoors & the dining room was not that full on Saturday afternoon but still quite loud due to the layout. One of the best dining experiences in the 805! Food: simple but done right! You can't really mess up breakfast. Right? Ya'll come support this business and remember to EAT LOCAL! I'm sure you guys know the business that was here before. It was sooo good. Unfortunately, due to the pandemic it was shut down. Don't let this happened again! You will be promptly greeted by this nice man. Didn't catch his name but, kuddos to him for his great customer service. We were asked if we wanted to sit outside or inside. We had a big party and within 10 minutes he sat us inside. It's really loud inside so, if you don't want to have more of a conversation with your folks sit outside. We ordered and the food came out quick! Out waitress was an adorable girl name, "Valeria". She was quick and handled a party of 9 FAST! Thank you for working so hard and pricing awesome service! I ordered the crepes and they need some flavor... the portion is not big. Our friends had been promoting the newest breakfast spot in Oxnard and it did not disappoint. I've been following their social media IG page and it was all that and more. Their service is top notch. The owner, once we were served, came out offering us fresh roasted jalapeños with our meals. They smelled delish but weren't ready for all that spice . Their seasoning on all their food was great. My wife was pleasantly surprised to have oat milk as an option to their espresso coffees. Prices were really good. I felt they were actually lower than most breakfast spots. I highly recommend this spot. This plate alone will make me come back sooner than later. read more

We went here for breakfast and the service was very quick since it was a weekday. We got the chilaquiles rojos with sunny side up eggs, potatoes, and fried beans. The strawberries Nutella crepes were great just was missing a little more Nutella drizzle. The side of scramble eggs wasn't great- tasted like the eggs came from a bag vs fresh eggs. The restaurant was beautiful and very cozy! We arrived about 40 minutes before closing and our server was very welcoming and accommodating. This is what I recommend: - The ORANGE JUICE (9/10) : We could tell it was freshly squeezed and we were given a generous amount, not to mention in a beautiful tall glass! I did however wish it was cold, we received ours room temperature:/ - The CINNAMON ROLL (9/10) : It was incredibly soft and moist. It was also huge and the dulce de leche + icing on top was perfectly sweet. Can't wait to try the cinnamon roll french toast! - The CHURRO PANCAKES (10/10) : When I say I am picky when it comes to pancakes, I am very selective! And these are definitely on my top 3 list. They were perfectly spiced with cinnamon and super buttermilky! When I say obsessed, I am obsessed. And don't get me started with the crunchy churros on top! As for the meals, my friends and I are Mexicans and know what good Mexican breakfast is, and we were not impressed. We tried the eggs, beans, home potatoes, and hash browns through different dishes. Great service and food was amazing. I had a breakfast sandwich which enjoyed a lot. My friend had green chilaquiles which were super bomb. Ramon was super attentive and friendly, he made sure me and my friends were having a good experience. In general the staff was always checking out table to check our needs. Ramon was a great server, but also Daniel, Valeria and Eric were double checking on our table, making sure we were well treated. The ambiance was cute it had the best vibes. Their hash browns will have you re-enacting That Scene from When Harry Met Sally. These are the most truly perfect hash browns I've ever encountered. They are so amazing that every time I went back to them between bites of my main dish, I was astonished that hash browns could be this good. This place checks all the boxes for Delightful Upscale Brunch Spot. The restaurant is pretty. Food is delicious. Service is nice and the kitchen is swift. The menu is creative if you want creative (they go further with Mexican-inspired ingredients than even brunch spots in Phoenix, and they have a great time with pancakes), and also does well on more standard dishes. Coffee goes in a little carafe on the table, so you're not dependent on check-ins to get your caffeine fix. Music when we brunched was a great indie-pop-type playlist, but wow, it was loud. The food is so good that I kind of don't care, and if we lived in Oxnard, I'd be here often. read more

I got the Huevos Rancheros with Nopales and it was sooooo good. The smiley face pancake was very cute and perfect for a 5 yo birthday breakfast. My only complaint was the timing of food. My dish came out first. Then my husband and son sat waiting, kind of a faux pas in the industry. On the other hand, I'm glad my dish didn't sit under a lamp until the other items were completed. We drove all the way from Burbank to come eat at Cuernavacas but it was closed for remodeling so we looked up where else in the area we can come eat with our dog. This place looked amazing on Yelp so we came to try it out. We were seated immediately which was nice since we were starving. Took us a while to go through all the yummy looking options on the menu but we finally decided on a café de olla, an iced coffee, pozole, a birria omelette, and a short stack of the banana nut pancakes. The cafe de olla was cold and tasted like I was sipping on big red gum. The iced coffee tasted like water with coffee bean residue. The pozole that comes in the Juanita's can had more flavor than what was served. The omelette didn't come with the side of consomé and it looked more like chorizo than birria. And lastly the pancakes were so dry even syrup couldn't help. It has so much potential for a good brunch spot but the food needs some work. read more

Finally got around to trying the Downtown Cafe in the heart of Oxnard after seeing they had noples on the menu. Not many spots offer this delicious vegetarian/ vegan friendly food, so we were excited! Staff was friendly and accommodating, but the tables inside were a little too close together, and we moved outside to their cute patio area. My husband ordered the biscuits and gravy, and I got the noples huevos rancheros. My food: While the Noples were cooked well, the red sauce and home potatoes lacked even the slightest amount of flavor. Hubby's food: ok portion if looking for a lighter breakfast, but again, the gravy had no flavor, and the biscuit was relatively dry. Overall, we were underwhelmed. The menu is extensive and sure to have something for everyone, but if looking for flavor in Mexican staples, they didn't deliver. read more

Decided to try this place based on the reviews and the extensive breakfast menu. It was difficult to make a decision on what to order because so many things sounded so good! I ordered the cinnamon roll combination that came with two eggs, choice of bacon or sausage and potatoes. I was a little nervous because I am picky about my cinnamon rolls but omg it was so good. It came out sliced horizontally and I believe they must toast it a bit on the grill because it had the texture of a very good French toast. Not overly sweet which I prefer. Yummy : ) Orange juice was fresh squeezed and delicious - thank goodness since it is not cheap. ($7.99). Eggs and bacon came out just as I requested which was soft poached and crispy bacon. Really appreciate that. My husband ordered a Bloody Mary (very tasty!) and the Chili verde omelette which was so good I wanted to eat all of his food. Highly recommend if you like chili verde cause you will be licking the plate. Prices are very fair. Food quality is great. Only gripe is there was zero toilet paper in the restroom at 9:30 am. We had a party of 7, hostess said it would be a 20-30 min wait. We understood we had a large party. After over 30min we finally got a table. We sat down for over 5 min and none of the servers acknowledged us, or had to courtesy to tell us we will be with you in just a moment. Over 5 servers passed by and nothing. So we decided get up and leave us we never got any type of service. The waitress need to be trained better! We will never go back! Definitely DO NOT RECOMMEND!
