We love coming here! The food is consistently delicious. We're big fans of Hawaiian barbecue and have tried a lot of different places, but the kalua pork here is the best we've ever had. We also get the chicken katsu curry pretty often, and it's always fantastic. Everything we've tried has been great, and this has definitely become one of our favorite spots! The people who work here are always so friendly, and the staff taking orders are wonderful. They've consistently given us great recommendations, and we're really looking forward to trying more of the menu. Service: 4.2 friendly Food: 3.7 Friday night and my wife lets me pick the spot, so I've been wanting to try this place and been craving Hawaiian food; so I guess it's my lucky night! When we arrived, I opened the door and thought there was no seating since all I saw was the counter to order food. But there's a few tables that sit mostly two or four people, which gave that hole-in-the-wall vibe. So that was also a sign for us to stay and dine-in. We ordered the BBQ mix (w/brown rice & salad) and the Seafood & BBQ combo with all rice. The young woman working the counter was kind and brought our order to our table, even though everything was packed in "to-go" containers. All the meat was served hot and the seafood fried & crispy. The piece of fish that was in my combo was lightly battered and seasoned which did not require any sauce (the highlight of my dinner). The shrimp tasted like from a packaged product, but it was fried to perfection and not greasy. The BBQ beef was thinly sliced and overly marinated since I can still taste the saltiness from the marinade even drinking several glasses of water after dinner. I decided to give this place a try because I wasn't sure what to have for dinner. The location is quite small, and I don't recall there being much, if any, seating available for dining in. I ordered the Spam and eggs plate, which came with two scoops of rice and macaroni salad. The macaroni salad was pretty standard, and the Spam and eggs were decent. They provide teriyaki sauce on the side, but I think the dish would have been more flavorful if it had been cooked with the sauce rather than served separately. I couldn't eat too much of it but it was tasty. The amount of meat was ok. Meat was all tender and cooked nicely for me. The parts that was eh for me was the rice was hard and too much on the dry side for me. I like sticky rice but it's just my preference. The rib that was provided was smaller and only had two bones. I'm happy there's a Hawaiian eatery in Elk Grove that's not a chain. The first time I came here, got the garlic shrimp plate. The shrimp at the time were bigger and had shell at a reasonable price. The plate also comes with 2 scoops of rice, some cabbage and a side of macaroni salad all at $13.95 or around there. I came today and to my surprise the garlic shrimp plate went up in price, no more shell and you get more shrimp (12 pieces). It still comes with 2 scoops of rice and macaroni salad with the shrimp on a bed of cabbage. Really enjoyed my shrimp plate the first time around. Lots of flavor and reminded me of Hawaii, going to the North Shore, and waiting at the shrimp restaurants for my garlic butter shrimp. DQ comes a close second for mainland garlic butter shrimp. I'm rating this 3 stars for a somewhat downgrade in the garlic shrimp. No shell, and the shrimp appear smaller. Not as much garlic as before but flavor is still there. Unfortunately, the new garlic shrimp plate went up in price to $15.95. I'm ok with the price but didn't like that the shrimp size became smaller. Which would explain why there's more shrimp. I've tried their spam musubi which is good. I feel like you can't go wrong with spam musubi. Will have to try their other dishes. Ordered the bbq plate which has one piece of short rib, bbq beef, and bbq chicken along with two scoops of rice and one scoop of Mac salad. The short rib was tough to eat and really chewy. The plastic silverware they provide is very thin and made it difficult to use to eat. It felt warm inside the restaurant to me. I had been wanting to try DQ Hawaiian since they first opened, but finally got around to it when grabbing dinner with family on Friday. Our group of 5 decided to dine in, and we were the only ones the entire visit to do so. DQ seemed to be pretty popular for take out orders! The interior is pretty simple - a row of about 5ish tables of 4 and 1 or 2 smaller tables make up the seating. Note: during the March heat wave when we visited, the interior was hotttt. I wonder if it was a building-wide issue, because we noticed a lack of cooling when we visited another business in the same strip. The service was very nice and quick. We ordered at the counter and then our dishes were brought out to us once ready. My husband got the loco moco and I got a combo with BBQ chicken and katsu. Of the two orders, we both preferred mine, only because the loco moco patty was okay, but not great. I loved the BBQ chicken and katsu - both were cooked really well with lots of flavor! I had found out DQ Hawaiian was having their Grand Opening from a friend so I decided I'd attend since she had already tried their food and loved it! First 30 customers got their meal for free. After that 50% off! The incentive to come was there. We made it just in time to get #30! Woo hoo! The restaurant is small and narrow. Not an ideal place to bring the whole fam but possible as I saw 4 chairs to a table. Lots of hustle and bustle but nonetheless my food was done within a reasonable amount of time, all items accounted for, and was delicious. Location isn't too far from Sac peeps, such as myself, and part of EG where you're not driving too far into EG stuck in so much traffic. I got the Chicken Katsu regular plate. This came with 2 scoops of rice, 1 scoop of mac salad (has tuna, btw), and PLENTY of chicken. My toddler loved their crispy chicken and kept asking for more! 10/10 Hubby got the fish & shrimp plate. I ordered the half katsu, half teriyaki combo so I could try both. My meal was delivered to the table in a tied-up to-go bag. Inside, I found a tiny plastic fork that wasn't very practical, so I asked for chopsticks. I also had to request teriyaki sauce, as it didn't come with the meal. Now, onto the food -- the chicken was cooked and coated perfectly. The katsu was golden, crispy, and incredibly tender inside. The katsu sauce was excellent and definitely a highlight. The teriyaki chicken was made with lean tender breast meat, nicely grilled, and flavorful on its own. Unfortunately, the teriyaki sauce was a letdown -- overly salty and more like standard Hawaiian-style brown gravy than classic teriyaki. The macaroni salad was also disappointing. It didn't taste like traditional Hawaiian mac salad and, honestly, wasn't even as good as the kind you'd find at a grocery store. Under the chicken, there were a few sad strings of lettuce -- no real veggies, and definitely no cabbage unless you special order it. Despite the downsides, I'd come back -- mainly for the meat. I was quite hungry after working in the area. Saw that this place opened up right next to Rose Tea Lounge and as I have been craving Hawaiian bbq for awhile, this place seemed perfect. When you walk in you are immediately greeted by the front desk staff where you can see the menu and where you would order, their menu is simple but they have many options and you can even get a low carb option which is awesome to know! The only downside is that the parking and general traffic can be horrible. There's a busy restaurant with a drive thru that's brings in a lot of cars and people. Be careful of other people/cars. Wow! The reviews are right! This place is fantastic! My garlic shrimp was out of this world! It rivals Station 16. I love that they offer it healthy style with brown rice and salad. The spam masubi and my hubby's teriyaki chicken were fantastic, too. The seating area is small with only about five tables. Unfortunately, there were a lot of flies, but there are bathrooms. This is a mom-and-pop operation and the food is a league above that other Hawaiian BBQ chain. It's not fancy, but the food is amazing. What a gem! read more

While driving I saw this place and I have been wanting Hawaiian BBQ for a while, so this place immediately caught my attention. As soon as I walked in, I was greeted immediately and welcomed by the young woman who was working. She was being very friendly and patient and took the time to go over the menu, answer my questions, and suggest popular items. That kind of customer service really makes a difference, especially when trying a new place. The interior of the place is also really clean and although the menu in the restaurant is really high up, it is very convenient to look at when you are dining or sitting down, I do wish that the menu was lower so I didn't have to look so high up however.. I went with the half and half plate with chicken and bbq beef and was impressed by how juicy and delicious it was. The food was fresh and flavorful compared to L&L. The mac salad was also a nice addition and balanced the plate well, it was really delicious! The curry sauce had a slight kick and was ok; wished there was more sauce. Chicken was plentiful and had right amount of panko. The teriyaki chicken was good, and the kahlua pork was flavorful with the right amount of smoke. The ambience was casual; just wish I wasn't able to hear conversations going in the kitchen, which was behind the pony wall. Friendly cashier who asked how our food was...a rarity at quick serve restaurants. Service took my starting from 3 to 4.
