Was at the hospital and craving something other that the usual hospital food. My Aunt shows up with takeouts from Dragon Gate, and I was a little hesitant about trying the food because new isn't my thing. Anyway, I had some of their fried rice with shrimps and chicken, and it was waaaayyy better than I expected. It was sooo good, I had it the next day and the day after too. I work from home so whenever lunch time rolls around I like to stop by a few local places. I discovered this gem while exploring the area and it has been a most welcome surprise. The lunch specials are reasonably priced and cooked to order. I have no problem waiting for food that I know is going to be hot and fresh. I especially like the fried rice and sweet and sour pork. Support this small family owned business because they deserve it! If I would have one tiny nit pick, I was unable to get my sweet and sour sauce on the side (which makes it hard to eat leftovers that are soggy). This isn't a big deal with the lunch special though. I would say pleeeeease allow it in the side because if I wanted to get say a quart of S&S pork it would be nice to be able to make it crispy again later. Will ask next time and update this review to reflect that just in case I'm mistaken about the larger orders not allowing it on the side. Other than that tiny thing, this place is fantastic. This place is fantastic! The best Cantonese/Mandarin in the area. If you have not tried it you need to as soon as you can. I have lived in China for a short time and this food mimics what I had in the restaurants in Beijing and Yenan. The woman that prepares the food is wonderful, super friendly and super helpful. I've been going to Dragon Gate, for 25 years, although I don't get there as often as I would like. Everything is fresh, light, not overly fried. I usually get the Empress shrimp, my favorite, but I tried the Spicy Bean Curd last night - delicious! We ate in, on an early Thursday evening, and while we were there, they had a lot of takeout business. The prices are beyond reasonable. Please tip - they deserve it! read more

I remember living in the area and always frequenting this place as a child with my mother. I had not been here for over 6 years so I decided to make the drive with my coworker for our lunch hour. I am so glad we did. It was so worth the drive. This wonderfully unassuming place is the best Chinese takeout in Rogers Park. Everything is Great. Vegetables are the correct color, and cooked well. All of their flavors are excellent, and each dish is prepared with the correct unique sauce. Not just Brown sauce. Spring Rolls are a must, some of the best in the city. Favorites- BBQ Pork fried rice, Combination Seafood is Excellent. Not to mention the Lo Mien, perfect, and not soggy like many others. CASH ONLY, and No delivery. Gotta go. I had the Kung Pao Chicken, the flavor was amazing, however there were waaaayyy too many water chestnuts. There were more water chestnuts than chicken or veggies in my serving. The Egg Drop soup was thick, but delicious. It's worth a try, we will go again. read more

Yummy, yummy. I got the Kung Pao chicken lunch special. The egg roll was crispy and not greasy. These are the smaller egg rolls with a thin wonton wrapper. The fried rice was chewy with a little crunch. The Kung Pao chicken was delicious. Flavorful and not too spicy. I loved the water chestnuts and the chicken was cooked to perfection. Every now and then I'd hit a chunk of pineapple, which normally I don't care for, but the sweetness added complexity to the spiciness. Yep, I'll be going back for more. Soon. read more

I'm kind of ashamed to admit it, but typically Chinese food is one of the only kind of foods where I prefer the Americanized version (Panda Express!), but this place is an exception if for no other reason than it being ridiculously cheap. I always get pork fried rice ($3.75) and my girlfriend gets something equally cheap and then we get crab rangoon ($3.50) and our total is like $11 with tax. I usually have enough food leftover that I can bring it to work the next day. This is not a place I would dine in at, I'm not even sure if they have tables and if they do it would be awkward to dine in there. read more

Just a quick update, this place is still awesome! Loved the Orange chicken as well as the General Tsos, both are spicy and the chicken is actually nice pieces of juicy chicken, not dry or overly fatty pieces. My one complaint is the cash only policy that makes it hard to come here without planning ahead, since I don't always have cash on me. read more

Would not recommend. Came here because it had 4 stars, but it's really not good and is a tad overpriced for take out Chinese food. I ordered general tso's, which was served as just fried chicken pieces with some type of oil on it. Really terrible. My husband felt similarly about the beef and broccoli he got, it was pretty tasteless and over cooked. Won't be coming here again. read more

I have been going to this place since early 2000's when they were further north on Clark by Estes. Their food is always delicious and consistent and the owner is nice, I've seen her son grow up in the restaurant and he now also runs the restaurant. I would definitely recommend them as the top Chinese food spot in Rogers Park. read more

Great restaurant, and great Chinese. The prices are just right, and the portion sizes are generous. Definitely add this to your Chinese rotation, especially if you live in the neighborhood. All of this is good, but the most important aspect was how nice the owner (or front person) was. read more

This restaurant was recommended to me by a family member. At first glance its doesn't look that inviting, but you shouldn't always judge by appearance alone. It's small on the inside but there are some chairs and tables, the cashier was nice, and they have a pretty basic menu. I ordered the spicy shrimp fried rice, the crab Rangoon and the chicken wings. The wait wasn't too long, but I didn't mind because I knew that they were preparing the food fresh. The crab Rangoon was amazing, and the chicken wings were great and seasoned well; they looked liked normal chicken wings, not the really huge ones that some places sell. I love this place. I used to live on that corner of clark and devon and I ordered here nearly every other day. I have become nearly addicted to their orange chicken. So much so that when my fiance calls the woman who answers the phone knows us by name. I recently moved away and have been on a mission to find orange chicken that compairs. It got me through my pregnancy and now I have to fight the urge to travel the 30 minutes just to order it. The only draw back I have found for this place is that they don't accept any credit cards. More times then not I have to stop from ordering on the basis that I have no cash. But great food. Great price. read more

I love Dragon Gate and have been a loyal longtime customer(25 years). The owners are wonderful and take pride in their business. I decided to write a review because after a long hiatus I decided to order tonight. The food was fresh and delicious. And over the long time I have been eating here the food is always consistently good. I love the egg rolls. Thin and crispy not to greasy. Chicken dishes are great! Prices are reasonable. Yes, there is no delivery and it is cash only but there is always parking in front and it is worth it if I have to stop and get cash. This is the best Chinese take-out in Rogers Park. I live closer to other places but I make the short hike from West Rogers Park to Clark Street to get their dishes. They don't use at much sodium as other restaurants, so their food tastes cleaner and more fresh. The prices are great too. I usually order extra to have leftovers. read more

Dragon Gate has been on Clark street for more then 18 years its owned by the most nicest people you'll meet. This retaurant was located on Clark street 2 blocks away from Touhy and now they moved to Clark and Arthur. I dont go often because its far from where I live. Well i visited again a few weeks ago and the food doesnt change. When I went I ordered Shrimp Fried Rice, Shrimp with Vegetable, and Beef with Broccoli. The Beef with Broccoli was as some people say flame, meaning it had such flavor to it wasn't to stronge or to little flavor just right. The shrimp fried rice wasn't just plain white rice with soy sauce on it to look colored. Now the Shrimp with Vegetables has no words to discribe its that good. My suggestion is that if you don't believe me you should go as soon as possible to Dragon Gate and have a time savoring this amazing food! read more
