They can get very busy especially in the summer months and have a great online ordering platform where you can order ahead if you are in a rush. I used to work right up the street and put my lunch order in advance. My go to is the iced lavender vanilla latte and iced matcha latte (I am a huge lavender lover so also add in lavender to my matcha too!) They just opened up the cafe with a newly renovated area next door and expanded the place. They have free wifi where you can pop into your laptop and work remote for a few hours. Drift Cafe is the epitome of a hip, local establishment. All the reviews hit the marks with long lines and wait times in peak season, but the effort is worth the experience unless you are a die-hard Starbucks or Dunkin' person. Drift is as "crunchy" as they come, and while that used to be viewed as a negative previously it has been all the rage in recent years. They have a feel of hippy meets hipster in terms of their offerings and ingredients used, including all the "in" exotic and health-related items like acai, chia seeds, CBD, and of course everything is organic and sustainably-sourced. The space is very bright and vibrant to accompany the smells of coffee, oatmeal, and blended fruit. Seating is pretty difficult to come by unless you are there super early or during the tourist offseason. It's a really well designed space, decorated to bring brightness (it's primarily a breakfast spot) which is offset by the colorful food and drinks. The personnel and attitude matches the space. Bubbly personalities take your order with a smile and are as pleasant as the aromas that fill the space. I've been here a few times and I've never had an issue with my order or the service, which is pretty amazing considering the volume they do on a daily basis. The food and drinks are imaginative and unique in a world of copycats. From the Purple Chill Pill smoothie to their take on Turmeric Golden Milk they have forged their own path on top of the typical offerings of your favorite coffee shops. The food is equally unique, not necessarily in the ingredients used but in the variety of offerings and combinations. You have your typical breakfast platters/plates, hot oatmeal/cereal, smoothie bowls, and sandwiches. What you get for the price paid is a real value in my opinion, but hinges on quality over quantity. You shouldn't leave Drift hungry, but don't expect the 3# of greasy diner food you can get at half the cost at a Denny's or local diner. Drift has become my favorite spot in the downtown area to grab n' go or sit (when a seat is available) for breakfast. The complaints I've heard and read all relate to the waits, long lines, and size of the seating areas. I honestly don't have an issue with any of those after reading about it before trying Drift, and their food and drinks only further solidified in my mind that it was worth the wait. I would recommend Drift to anyone that is in the area and wants a healthy, filling, and invigorating start to their day. It doesn't come without it's costs (both time and monetary), but I'm a firm believer in what they stand for and love to back these kind of establishments with my business and give them the love they deserve and need. read more

Apparently I wasn't as high on Drift Cafe as most. The food was solid but nothing was spectacular or even above average. The farmers scramlet was heavy on veggies and light on chicken sausage, and the hash it out scramlet had a fried egg that was more over easy than fried over well. I generally expect the latter unless clearly given a choice - which I was not. I was also a bit frustrated that my butter pecan lattes (the best part of the meal by far) were given to me about 10 minutes before my food order arrived. This made my coffee just warm by the time I was ready to sit down and enjoy it. On the plus side, the place is charming and would be nice to sit down in and have a meal if not crowded. read more

This cute and quaint cafe is in a great location in town. My boyfriend and I stopped in for breakfast the other day and found it to be a bit hit or miss. While many reviews rave about the açaí bowl, I thought the açaí was a bit too thick and tasteless for me. Although, the fruit was fresh, and the coconut and granola were good. I probably wouldn't get this again if I were to come back. The good morning sandwich was delicious, and I honestly wish they sold the chipotle aioli sauce in a bottle because it was so good. For coffee, the Blue algae lacked coffee flavor, which i'm pretty sure it was supposed to have. On the other hand, the oat and honey was very tasty and smooth. The person taking our order at the counter was very nice, and after customers left their table she sprayed them down which I typically don't see in cafes. This is a trendy little cafe on Thames street near a lot of touristy shops! They are currently closed on Mondays which we weren't expecting, but we just went back on Tuesday. There was a steady stream of people coming in and out around 11am. There are only a couple tables inside and outside, so don't plan on making this your brunch spot with a big group of people. You order at the counter and then you can sit if there's open spots. The service was a little slow, but everything was super fresh! We got the Mother of Dragons and Sailor's Sky smoothie bowls. The Mother of Dragons was refreshing, but the coconut flakes and chia pudding didn't provide a whole lot of flavor, and I wouldn't recommend it. We added almond butter drizzle to the Sailor's Sky smoothie bowl which was very good! The portions were pretty large, so share if you aren't too hungry! We also got the Berry Good smoothie which was fruity and yummy. The Farmer's Scramlet was also good, but nothing special. read more

Back and better than ever with my first review in like, six months! The COVID blues had me down, but I'm glad I finally got out to dine at Drift Cafe in Newport! This adorable little spot is a welcome and bright addition to the neighborhood, especially since we've been collectively battling quarantine doldrums for what seems like forever. The space is rather unassuming, and the average pedestrian may not notice the entrance, which is below street level. However, the keen eye will be rewarded with a clean and bright space that has a wonderful menu, friendly service, and SWING CHAIRS! How can it get any better than that? Drift features a decent selection of artisanal brunch offerings (served all day, thank goodness! I have developed a penchant for sleeping late during quarantine, and my day begins in the afternoon usually. Good thing I can still have my egg scramble and eat it too, even at 4pm!), plus sandwiches, grain bowls, quirky iced teas and coffees, and the freshest fruit bowl I've ever had from a quick service cafe! Filled to the brim with seasonal berries and ripe banana, it's worth the extra $6 to add it onto your meal or get it as a quick and healthy summer snack. I also really love the Blue Raspberry Tea, which they source locally, and tastes incredibly flavorful, even without added sweetener. If you want, you can add some of their lavender simple syrup, which gives a summery twist to the already tasty beverage. The bowl wasn't exactly what I was expecting, but it was good, and perfect for the current heat wave. I was expecting all fresh fruit, but it's actually a bed of a sort of coconut milk sorbet with the first few items listed, with the latter items on top. It's very refreshing. The iced latte was good, and I like that they have a rotating selection of house-made syrups. I didn't want my latte too sweet and it wasn't; they didn't really get the east ice concept. The indoor seating is nice, as is the small patio out front, with some shade on one side. The food and drink were out very quickly. The lunch items each have something I don't really want so I probably won't try them, but they look healthy and generally good. People talk about the line, but there wasn't one around mid-afternoon on a hot summer Sunday afternoon. read more

The honey and oats latte is absolutely hands-down one of the best coffees I have ever had but their food is pretty subpar. My friends and I ordered breakfast wraps. I had the egg bomb wrap, and my friends got the CBR breakfast wrap. Although yes, the rapture pretty good they were not filled especially looking at the menu and see how much stuff was in them. You would think they would be much bigger than they were. But they were pretty small wraps. As someone who usually can't finish a full sandwich, I finish this fall right because it was pretty small. It's my second visit and my husband's first. A rainy, foggy morning in the area and after an early morning errand we decided to get breakfast takeout. I love their bacon egg and cheese wrap, with some additions. My husband ordered the hash bowl, with some additions. He had coffee, I had cocoa. I've never dined in - it's small- but cute and cozy. Husband raved about the hash bowl and especially the bagel. I loved my meal but didn't love the cocoa. The clover app makes it easy to see all of the possibilities that the kitchen is capable of producing - sides, bread choices, sauces, etc to customize your meal. We had trouble checking out but we were able to easily call in and place the order, everything was made perfectly as ordered. Parking is tricky but there are a few spots you can hover nearby and run in when the order is ready. If I were staying in town I'd likely walk there daily! read more

What an awesome little place in downtown Newport. I was only in town for the day but I'm so glad I stopped here for breakfast and a coffee because it was absolutely incredible. I never knew that a fruit bowl could make me so happy but it was so delicious. I opted for the sunset bowl after talking to the workers about the different bowls and grabbed an Americano that was one of the best ive ever had. The inside atmosphere was so cute with plenty of seating and a couple tables outside so I opted up to sit outside since it was so nice. We stayed across the street this past weekend (Aril 23) and had to try it out after seeing the constant flow of people going in. We figured it must be good and it WAS! I had a cold brew coffee and sunset smoothie bowl. The coffee was strong and delicious. The bowl was freshly made and so yummy! Hubby enjoyed his cold brew, green smoothie and "good morning" breakfast sandwich. Service was also excellent. This will be our new go-to spot when we return to Newport!
