My friend (his mother is Thai) has a rule of thumb for telling if a Thai place is authentic, and it is to look if there is a picture of the king of Thailand. I definitely searched and found some regal looking fellows on the walls, so hopefully that's a good sign! Either way it was delicious. The customer service is great and so great to our party of 12. Not much to write home about here - the service was good and friendly, and the red curry noodles is the hottest dish I've ever eaten (I ordered medium; can't imagine how hot "Thai hot" would be). The Thai dumplings were not good. The filling was a meatball that tasted like boiled hamburger with no seasoning. But the dipping sauce was good. Spicy basil noodles were okay, tasted like peanutty pad thai. The red curry noodles were too hot to have any real flavor, but had the look and feel of everyday stir-fry with noodles, except they were swimming in red curry sauce. Like I said, the service was good. Appeared to be a family operation where they understand their livelihood depends on good service. When it's my turn to choose a place for lunch, I probably would not choose this place, but if someone wants to take me out or the group chooses this, I'd go again. If you know what "Thai hot" means, and you like fire-in-the-hole chicken wings, then go for it. Otherwise, order mild and enjoy the flavors. UPDATE: ordered Massaman curry, medium. Not nearly as hot as the previous "medium" dish I had. I'm pretty sure my first order was hotter than intended. Amazing. I've tried about every Thai restaurant in BR and they were not even close to comparable as Duang Tawan. Cooked fresh to order Thai food! Great authentic flavor and the spiciness is actually spicy! I recommend the tom yum soup, duck pineapple curry, pork larb and of course the pad Thai. Don't let the old exterior fool you it's good food with friendly service I had the shrimp pad Thai that while was tasty it wasn't very saucy. My husband had the spicy duck curry which he described as "hot and delicious" The ambiance was that of authentic Thai heritage with ornate furniture throughout the restaurant. Let me start by saying that it is a very homey feeling, like I was at my grandmother's house in the Philippines. To me, that is a great thing! Oh and the food; it's definitely made-to-order because it comes out fresh and piping hot each time! Because of this, there is a bit of a wait for the food. For Appetizers: I insist on the Thai Wings, probably the best wings I have had in Baton Rouge. You can never go wrong with any of their House Specialties, but to keep the flow of the un-boring, go with the Duck Pineapple Curry or any of the frog leg dishes. If you don't like spicy, make sure you ask what items carry even a hint of spice. Even though it does not have the chili pepper icon next to it, some dishes still pack a bit of heat. For vegetarians and vegans, you have options here and you will not be disappointed. The vegetables used in all their dishes are fresh and have that crrrrruunch that I love, when eating veggies. This is a nice locale...very friendly service and many of the herbs and spices that they use in the meals is grown by them on the restaurant property...I had never tried Thai food so wasn't really sure what to expect... The restaurant is smallish with about 14 4 top tables...the menu seemed rather overwhelming to me but eventually I settled on Beef in Chili Paste...not really sure what my sister, my niece or her boyfriend ordered...The menu listed spiciness of meals as a 1 to 5 and then stated you could also go beyond to "Thai hot"...We ordered a Tiger Tears salad at a level 3 for the table to share and it was sparky and delicious...next time in I'm gonna make that my entree...because of that sparkiness as a level 3 I chose that level for my entree but was disappointed when it was more sweet than spark... The meal itself was delicious and well prepared and I'm glad I stopped in and tried Thai food for the first time and will definitely give this place another try in the future but will go level 4 next time!! read more

Yum yum yum! They have dishes loaded with quite a bit of flavor. The tom yum soup was a hit. I ordered my food Thai spicy and they came through in that department. The food is always consistently good. Some of my favorite things to start with are the Satay or the Larb. The Basil Sauce with Shrimp hot is one of my favorite entrees. Another favorite entree is the Pad Ped Pork hot with Thai red curry paste, tinder eggplant, green beans, bell pepper, and fresh basil. The best Thai I've had in BR. I've only had takeout from here twice since moving here and I am very pleased with the pad Thai and larb. The dishes were very flavorful and authentic, but be warned about the spice. I'm Korean so I really pride myself on my spice tolerance. The hot pad Thai is definitely spicy, making me reach for water more often, but the medium had my husband sweating and praying for milk. Located in an older blue building at the corner of Sherwood and Coursey blvd. This place is a lot more than meets the eye. So far I've tried the Pineapple Shrimp Curry and a dish that is similar to Pad See Ew (I don't recall the name). Both dishes were absolutely amazing. The medium hot is just enough to require frequent refills on water but without leaving your mouth burning. During lunch, you also get Lemon Grass soup as an appetizer. It was wonderful as well. The Duck Pineapple Curry is my favorite Thai dish in Baton Rouge! It's really wonderful! The spring rolls are good, not great. The dumplings are yummy. My husband gets the pad thai which is good but not the best in town. But the star entree is definitely the duck pineapple curry. The Duck is crisp and plentiful and the curry is so flavorful. It comes with a ton of veggies which makes me feel a little better about eating my entire plate! Be warned though that if you eat it all you may not be able to walk out the door, it's a ton of food. I've also had the peanut curry which is also delightful. The decor isn't as flashy as Thai Kitchen but the prices are much better. The duck is on the high side but it's SO worth it. The staff is very attentive and kind. We had an issue with a take out order once and they were extremely apologetic and made it right. They're just a great establishment. This is a place that if you blink you'll miss it! But what a surprise, it looks kind of old from the outside but it's very homey on the inside. Clean and well decorated with really authentic decorations! They have lunch specials with great portion and great prices! The pineapple duck curry was awesome! I wasn't a huge fan of the spicy basil noodles, noodles were a little undercooked and hard. But lunch comes with either soup or salad, the soup was delicious and it came with a small spring roll. I went here for lunch today and it was DREADFUL. I was really really excited because I saw the website and they have a great lunch deal (bowl of soup or salad and an appetizer, plus entree with your choice of meat for $7-9). So my sister and I walk in and I notice the first problem, we were one of 2 tables there. But we still think its a hidden treasure at this point so we didn't leave. We each ordered off of the Thai lunch menu and got the soup and appetizer. Well, the soup was delicious other than the very gamey chicken (odd right?) and the appetizer spring roll was 1 minuscule spring roll cut in half. Even after this though, I was still excited for the entree'. I ordered the basil noodles and my sis got the Pad Thai. While we were waiting, I heard the faint sound of a microwave beeping, which frightened me even more. As soon as it was set on the table, I knew we were in trouble. The food on both plates looked slimy and regurgitated to be honest and when we took our first bites, the impressions weren't much better. My dish had WAY too much anise or something similar and got gradually stronger as I continued to eat. After a few bites, the taste was so nauseating I quit eating (which I don't do. EVER.). Her pad thai was ok, but according to her it had the slight after taste of manure after a while. Needless to say, I strongly suggest not going Duang Tawan, but don't worry it may not an option for much longer, as we were leaving the TV cut off and said "Pay your bill now, or your satellite service will be discontinued." Oh - I guess it's not really Blue Thai anymore... a recent paint job means Duang Tawan looks much less run down and much more brownish-grey than blue. We come here on a regular basis for lunch with coworkers. You want to make sure you come with fewer than 6 people otherwise you'll be waiting a while... but otherwise it's a great place to get some tasty thai food. I haven't found another Thai joint that I like in the area, to be honest. The food is tasty, the portions are large, and the owners are very friendly. First time here. The atmosphere is very authentic with Thai influences through out the restaurant. Some what dark on the lighting but enough to see the menu. For an appetizer we tried the chicken satay. The chicken was dry and not as moist as most other Thai chicken satays I've tasted but decent nonetheless. For my entree I ordered the cashew beef and it was AWESOME. The plating was nice, food comes out fresh and piping hot, and the flavors of cashew and spice blended well with the celery and green onion. My wife ordered the Spicy Basil Noodle and added shrimp. I was also impressed with the balance of flavors with this dish as well as the amount in one order. Service was good the ladies there were very attentive and made sure our water glasses were full.
