The donuts are cake based as opposed to yeast. I tried a few of their seasonal donuts - the enchanted duo and the apple cobbler. The enchanted duo was a combo of a dubai chocolate donut and a strawberry sparkle donut. They looked exactly like they were advertised in all the marketing materials. All three donuts were delicious and warm. My favorite was the apple cobbler. The staff were friendly and quick making my donuts. I probably waited about 3 minutes after ordering for them. Duck donuts is amazing!! The staff is super friendly and really helpful. I had no idea they were a made-to-order establishment which was a pleasant surprise! When I took my son, we even got to witness them make fresh batter that was used for our donuts! The space is clean and festive too! It was decorated for Halloween! Their model is pay by the donut, so you would pay the same for a donut that has all of the toppings as you would a glazed one. We ordered a 1/2 Dozen and took advantage of the buy 4, get 2 more for $1. Not sure if that's a deal all the time, or just when we were in store. Either way...the donuts are worth it! At that time, I did not thin the donuts were worth speeding about although everyone else loved them. I would saw that these 2 flavors I tried are worth sharing and recommending. Mint icing with Oreo pieces and hot fudge drizzle - surprisingly, my least favorite. Still good but I think the combination was too complex for me lol. Blueberry icing with powdered sugar - my favorite!!! Not too sweet and so tasty. The donuts here are SO good! Nice, hot, fresh donuts. Not only are the toppings insanely good, the actual donut itself puts these in a category of their own. The batter is not a 'cakey' consistency, but rather light and fluffy like a French pastry. Soft inside, slightly crisp on the outside. I regret nothing. The employees are bright and ready to serve, and also patient when a companion is taking a *few* extra minutes to decide from the plethora of options. I've been curious, and following their truck for a couple months but never able to catch them, so when I discovered we were near a brick and mortar store after a recent doctor appointment, it was worth a stop on the way home. Basically, the donuts themselves are like a big mini-donut from the fair. They plop into a large conveyor frying machine, and are topped after completing their circuit. My girlfriend and I both opted for a maple bacon donut; I added a strawberry lemon drizzle, and she a peach cobbler. We both also got a milkshake to try, she doubled up on the maple bacon flavor, while I had a salted caramel. All in all, the donuts were decent, but I think we both agreed that this was perhaps not the best medium for elaborate toppings. I think they would be best just like the fair donuts, with a dusting of cinnamon and sugar. Leave the toppings for the yeast donuts. The milkshakes were similar; good, but not great. I have never thrown away leftover donuts right after I bought them. Until today. One of the primary tenets of the Duck concept is ultra fresh donuts made when you order. But I think that was one thing that actually worked against me having a positive experience, for much of the toppings melted off the tops of the donuts and wound up as a sticky goo in the bottom of the box. Secondly, the donuts were underdone. The exterior had a nice little crisp, but that merely covered undercooked dough underneath. It became very gummy and tacky in my mouth--at one point I was concerned that it would adhere to my soft palate and end with me displaying the universal choking sign to a complete stranger in a Harris Teeter parking lot in Greensboro. Not how I want to go. Thirdly, the donuts fall apart too easily. They broke apart in my hand. Definitely not your classic handheld donut, you would be better off with a fork. The server was friendly enough, but I think she was more interested in her suitor who was lurking awkwardly in the dining area (I suppose that's illegal right now, incidentally). Perhaps that is why my donuts were under done. All that aside, the donuts did have a good taste. But I really can't put those things aside. Only about 1 in 5 Yelpers rate Duck Donuts as 3 stars or less. But they are correct. At least that was my experience today. I don't see how anyone could rate the donuts I was served today higher than 3 stars. This place is overhyped and overrated. read more

These are made to order so you know that what you're getting is fresh and warm in the box. They also offer breakfast sandwiches and coffee, I've really enjoyed the coffee myself which pairs beautifully with 1 or 2 or 3 or 12 of these incredible donuts. Staff here is great too! One of my donuts was supposed to have sprinkles on it and they opened the box to let me check it before I left and immediately fixed it with a smile. Stop in and try some, you won't be disappointed. I ordered a dozen donuts through Door Dash. They were delivered in their usual cardboard box BUT there was NO tape on the box that kept it shut during delivery. Nipped in here this weekend for the first time. The restaurant is tucked into the Harris Teeter shopping center up at the intersection of N. Elm and Pisgah, with lots of nearby parking available. The place was dead when we walked in, so we were quickly helped and given the rundown of how the process works here by a helpful employee. Instead of choosing from a series of prepared donuts like any other place, they make yours fresh to order with whatever glazes or toppings you select. Upside is your order is super fresh and delicious! Downside is that you've gotta wait a bit before experiencing the impending sugar coma. We selected a bunch of their configurations in lieu of our own and they were all rather tasty. My favorites were the orange icing with vanilla drizzle and the one with all sorts of chocolate and fudge on it. The base is always a vanilla cake donut that, when fresh, is crispy on the outside and warm and gooey on the inside, which is fantastic. One mistake we made was in ordering extra, just so we'd have leftovers. They lose quite a bit of their zest when a day old, unlike a lot of their competitors, so I'd recommend only getting what you know you're planning on eating that sitting. read more
