The first time I had Duck Donuts they were brought in from Virginia and we're a day old but tasty. Today was my first time trying them fresh and warm. Oh my goodness they were amazing. The staff is friendly and very efficient. It took very little time to get our 6 custom made donuts. I tried a variety including the chocolate glaze and maple bacon donut. One of my favorite glazes was the blueberry. I also love the strawberry glaze with sprinkles. This place was super busy and I totally understand why! Who wouldn't want fresh, mouthwatering donut goodness that's made to order!? The store was very bright and clean. There were a lot of people working and customers. The girl who took my order was very patient because I took a while to decide on what I wanted on my dozen donuts! She asked if I had been there before and showed me some donut combinations that were popular. She was excited that we had the same last name! Haha.. We came here early on when it was a new thing, and the line was literally out the door. But the managers were moving it along, and even with maybe twenty orders ahead of ours we waited like fifteen minutes total. The donuts are all individually customized from frostings to drizzles and toppings (even my maple frosting, syrup drizzle, and bacon donut) and cooked fresh. They come to you hot. They're kind of a cake style, you they have a fluffy, almost pancake like density. Not like Dunkin's cake donuts, which I think are repellant. The workers seemed preoccupied with their own conversations and my order took much longer too make than the 4 people behind us. Only get what you can eat they won't be good the next day. Can I just say "hallelujah!!?" Let me second that with saying I'm not a doughnut eater; I typically find them entirely too sweet and all the same. However, Duck Donuts has completely changed my perspective. We went on a Sunday, and yes, there was a line, but it passed really quickly. The staff was great, and patient, and there were plenty of them. It took no time at all to get our doughnuts, and they grabbed them fresh out of the oil. They put your chosen toppings on right in front of you, which was neat to watch. They also do a quality check before you take them; They come up with your open box of doughnuts and ask if they all look okay. Well, they looked incredible to me, so we took them and ran. My sister and I couldn't wait to dive in. We got a half dozen for around $8 and they were worth every penny. We sampled from their specialty menu that you'll find right next to the registers. The only one I chose not on that menu was a blueberry glazed topped with sprinkles. (Because, yes, I'm a 5 year old.) Our favorites were the lemon with powdered sugar, cinnamon bun, strawberry glaze with powdered sugar, and my blueberry. Believe it or not, this was my first visit to Duck Donuts. I had heard people rave about it constantly over the past few years, so when the opportunity came, during a visit to a Harris Teeter, I had no choice but to go in and see what it was all about. Normally, I am not a fan of cake donuts. I prefer something airy and glazed. However, after visiting Duck Donuts, I can say that I have seen the error of my thinking. I ended up buying two, the first one was maple bacon, and the second was just a plain cake one (for review purposes). The plain one was very moist, and easy to eat. Light and sweet, it melted in my mouth. The maple bacon donut felt a little excessive at first. It was loaded with sweet maple drizzle, and there were several pieces of bacon as well. I didn't know what to make of it at first, because the toppings seemed so excessive. However, upon biting into it, I understood what makes this chain so popular. At first I was overwhelmed by the sweetness of the glaze, but then, the taste of the bacon and the cake came through, a symphony of sweet and savory that I had not had the chance to experience before. Came here during the weekend because my friend recommended it. It was awesome! They have so many choices to choose from. Everything is decently priced and if you get more it's cheaper! My friends and I ordered the maple bacon drizzled with caramel and some drizzled in chocolate. We also tried the cinnamon sugar one and the powdered one. I was interested to know what the difference would be with this donut place, given that there are so many other options available. I decided to give it a try after hearing all of the hype, and I am glad I did it! Duck Donuts has really found a niche in the donut market to me. The donut itself reminds me of funnel cake batter (which I love!!!) and to me that is the best part. There was a feeling of angry and rude employees, but they all said nice words like, "enjoy your donuts" and "thank you for coming in".
