We didn't have a choice of what to order as it was pre-determined by the picnic setup for us, but were given two large sandwiches - one BLT and one turkey with cheese. I get it; small town = big mark ups. Whatever. One doesn't have to buy. However came in last week on a cold evening and Homes behind the counter; White guy late 20's early 30's behind counter, never took off his headphoes; in fact don't think he saw me or knew I was in the store until I approcahed counter, and then tooK him a few seconds to realize there was someone in front of him. Quick lil update for Jack's Grocery & Deli...Now don't get it twisted, I still frequent the deli inside of Jack's Grocery, quite often, ordering up my usual "Cupcake". No clue on what is behind the name as the sandy is mostly turkey, avocado cheese (your choice) and all of the normal sandwich vegetables you may or may not include with your order. (I do not, any longer). This is the reason for my updated post, as well as the bump down to 4 stars from 5. The last 3-4 times I ordered and ate my "Cupcake", everything tasted great except the lettuce. I enjoy salads as much as the next guy...just not on my sandwich, my burger, my hot dog or anything else, for that matter! I will say the tomatoes were excellent. I sliced it open and tried one, I loved it...by itself! I just cannot get down with any lettuce or tomato taste when combined with the rest of the sandwich! Still love you, Team Jack! read more

I had no idea that they sold fresh produce here! They have pretty much anything/everything here though. Even a bunch of natural/organic food items, a little ethnic section, kitchenware, variety of pet food, bath/body care, feminine products and they even had kombucha. The deli was closed when we went so I can't say how good it is but they do have a decent selection of meats, cheeses and breads to choose from at the deli. The person working the cashier was nice, chill and friendly. Great little store. read more

This Store is in the Heart of Julian California. It's not a big store .but it has almost all you need. Even has a Deli that makes Amazing Sandwiches. You can get bread soda ice cream. Meat The staff is friendly and professional. They make you Feel like you are at home. I have been in the store a few times yes I recommend them. I will be back. Nice to see a grocery store on Main Street for hikers and campers and everyone. Almost anything you need you'll find here...personal items, cold drinks, a deli that makes sandwiches, some produce, canned goods, snacks and a few kitchen tools. We got a few slices of corned beef to roll up and eat to tie us over until dinner. Walk around and check the prices. This grocery is out of the way toward the desert and prices reflect the shipping costs. Totally worth it if you need an item or lunch stuff. read more

The last time I was there when Ray managed it I had an enjoyable turkey sandwich on jalapeno bread so I hoped to order the same today. The price has gone up to 13 bucks so there's a star off right there. The snippy little female making the sandwiches needed telling three times to understand my order, another star gone. After I paid the ridiculous price at the front I took the tag back to her highness who then told me it would be 20 to 30 minutes for her to get around to it; another star gone. I explained that would have been useful information when I had first placed the order and then she really got snippy and a bit insulting. So I trudged back up to the counter and asked for a refund. Young lady, you obviously do not enjoy your job; perhaps you can find another one that suits you a little better. Luckily, I found the prime time deli in Pine Valley who knocked it straight out of the park so I do highly suggest that place! read more

Great little grocery in Julian, had everything I was looking for so when I come back to town I know where to go

Came into this grocery for a deli sandwich on a busy Saturday. First things first...impossible to social distance in the skinny aisles. Everyone wore masks though. We were lucky enough to come in when there wasn't a lone for the deli. We later saw the line grow quite a bit. These sammies aren't fancy...you choose your meat, bread, veggies, and condiments. They aren't grilled but they charge $12. I wouldn't pay that again. It felt like 2x what it should cost. There's a bench out front to sit and eat at, but we opted to take our food to another spot. Do yourself a solid and buy a hot sandwich from here. We got the hot mess and it was definitely worth the wait. Staff is friendly and prices are high for groceries but also it's costs a crap ton of money the get the supplies over there so I'm not judging. This a is a great place to stop in if you aren't wanting to sit down for lunch. read more

They've got a great deal if you're hiking, the PCT. For hikers, the sandwiches are $8, which is what they should be, as opposed to the $14 they charge the rest of us. The sandwich was OK would've been more OK for $8. but since I ordered one of their specials that was supposed to include avocado and there was no avocado it was not OK. So in short, average sandwiches over priced. But in Julian, this is considered cheap! read more

Came into this store during quarantine. The guy who was ringing people up was also do person making sandwiches, so me and another person waiting to check out just stood there for about 4 minutes before we were helped. Another employee that was roaming around almost bumped into me as she quickly came around the corner, while not wearing your mask on her face. I apologised, however she just stormed off past me. I'll be sure to bring a big cooler of food next time we come up to Julian so I don't have to stop here. read more

It was only 40 degrees outside, and the Julian Cafe was closed. But the aroma of burgers lured me away from the huge line in front of Mom's. Jack's not only had quick deli sandwich service, but I was also able to shop for dinner. The deli sandwiches are the bomb!!! Make sure you add bacon on you order if it doesn't already. read more

Small grocery store/market in the town of Julian. We needed to pick up some last minute things before we got to Laguna Campground. We came from North County and were going through Julian to Mt Laguna, good thing we decided to turn around and stop here since after you pass Julian, there's no stores between here and Pine Valley! Limited grocery store, I thought it be super overpriced but it wasn't too bad! We picked up a few yellow bell peppers, bag of marshmallows, and some chocolate. They didn't have regular milk chocolate, so we picked up a Mr Goodbar. But besides that, no complaints! read more

We shopped at this store 3 days in a row while camping in the area. The clerk was friendly and helpful and directed us to the items we needed. All good. After reviewing my weekend spending, I saw I was charged twice for one transaction. I called the store and spoke with Ray. He quickly apologized and began researching the error. He kept me updated throughout the process and ultimately refunded the money the following day. I'm thoroughly impressed with their customer service and will support this small business whenever I visit Julian. read more

An employee was talking while stocking food without a mask :( We discussed this issue with another employee, who addressed the situation quickly. Visiting Julian for a couple of days, I discovered I forgot a toothbrush -- so I visited Jack's to pick up a replacement. Overheard some folks discussing their sandwiches, so returned to Jack's a couple of days later to order a sandwich for my apple-picking day, not knowing what the apple farm lunch availability situation would be. I did not catch the name of the young lady working the sandwich counter, but I happened to come in just after they got a giant order because the local school needed lunch for their kids, so was asked if a 30 minute wait was OK. No problem! I went shopping at a next door boutique. Though when I was first there she looked understandably frazzled, when I returned, the smiling young lady had my sandwich prepared. My complicated order was made EXACTLY right. She also put the mayo packets on the side for me so my sandwich would not get soggy. I ate half my sandwich at the apple farm and then took the other half home with me to OC for my dinner. It was an awesome, filling, delicious sandwich that made 2 meals for me. I will definitely return here any time I happen to go back to Julian. read more

Three words for you..."Smoked Tri-tip meat!" Yummy Yum Yum! Wow, I didn't think deli meat could ever taste so excellent. In fact, I would say their smoked tri-tip meat is the best deli meat I have ever had in my life. 1 pound runs $10...its worth it! I also got a deli sandwich made in their little cafe for $7 and it was enough food to split with a friend of mine (VERY BIG). I had smoked turkey on it! I didn't physically visit the store, but wife brought home their sandwiches. I had the turkey sandwich on white. Nothing special. Good sandwich but I wouldn't go out of my way to get one nor would I crave one. Just fed me for lunch and I loved on. If you place this sandwich next to ones that come cut in triangles at any 7-11 or gas station, I probably wouldn't be able to tell you the difference. 3 stars. Wife had the philly (on sourdough because they were out of rolls. Philly gets a 4. Meat and bell peppers were good. Bread was eh. Kids got grilled chicken sandwich and turkey sandwich. Nothing really worth mentioning. This place is by no means horrible. Decent sandwiches. Okay selection. But below is my scale 1 Star- don't eat here. Makes you sick. Not worth it 2 stars- edible but I wouldn't recommend unless you are starving and there is no where else to eat 3 stars- decent food. Same as you can make at home or pick it up almost anywhere else 4 stars- definitely recommend, if you are in the area you should stop by or make time for it. It will be worth it 5 stars- you should drive here just for the food. If you are within 1 hour driving, highly recommend to go out your way to eat here. read more

Julian is an expensive tourist trap of a town, but the deli at Jack's makes solid made-to-order sandwiches with good quality ingredients at reasonable prices for this town. It doesn't hurt also that they have a good selection of groceries to serve the locals and tourists alike. read more

I have shopped at Jack's for 35 years and my most recent visit was a shock. The two employees could not find the courtesy to stop their conversation berating a teacher while checking me out and after coming home I discovered that the bread was moldy - a huge mold ring, which must have been 4 days old. Upon calling I was told to bring it back - a 20 minute drive one way - there was no "I'm sorry" but make sure you bring it back - thanks for letting me store the mold factory in my refrigerator until I can drive it back to the store. The milk I picked up will expire in 2 days, but the zucchini was nice and crisp. Being a local I demand for my local store to be the best it can be - and that is not that. Instead of having a conversation about their school stuff the employees should check for moldy breads and expired products. This is not the Jack's way! Sorry, but there is room for improvement. read more

Waited over 25min for two sandwiches and a bagels to be made. Other folks called their orders in and were serviced. Their excuse was that the called in orders were up before ours. Diane took 3 telephone calls while we stood there. Other area merchants confirmed our interpretation of the experience was not just a fluke. The owner was quite rude as well. read more

Delicious sandwiches!! I am a bit of a picky sandwich snob, and I was really impressed with these thick, loaded sandwiches. The turkey provolone on wheat, and the ham/Swiss on rye were so delicious. Generous portions of meat, super fresh toppings. So good! I'll be back! read more

I came here as a stop on an AmazingCo experience and someone took our order before we arrived! the deli was closed as we we're trying to pick it up (grill cleaned and everything) but Taylor was so nice and helpful. I haven't been Jack's for about a year now so I decided to give them a second chance. What a big mistake. It was worse than last time. When you first walk in the smell that hits you is horrific. There is no A/C so I think it makes it worse. I went into the vegetable cooler and was so shocked I walked out. There was black mold on the walls and the zucchini was so rotten it too had mold on it. That's it for me. I will never go to this store again. read more

Jack's is a great little grocery store in the small town of Julian. You can purchase marinated meat and other fresh meat from the butcher. Prepared salads and sandwiches are available through lunch time hours. I love the Asian Chicken Salad. A good selection of organic produce is available. This small store packs in great selection in a small space. I appreciate that there are healthy choices along with the standard stuff. read more

Younger blonde fellow working the register with his camo, military baclava down so his snotty little nose pops out. Walked in and he was speaking, at the register, with a local about the possibility of the local shooting guns at the boys aunts house. Did my shopping, Got in line, waited as they talked about shooting guns, no nod or any kind of awareness that there was a line forming behind me. I clicked my water bottle down and cleared my throat. No response, he acted like I wasn't there. It got to the point to where it was apparent that I didn't matter because I was from out of town and his friend mattered because he was a local. Incredibly bad business considering what this town has been through as a result of the pandemic and the fact that it is our incoming, out of town dollars are changing their economy for the better. Clear my throat again, no response, 30 seconds later I put my items down and walked out. Unbelievably rude. Went down the street to the other grocery/camping supply place. Had a great experience. Moral of the story: Don't go to Jack's grocery. They are rude and don't care about your business. read more
