Lackluster breakfast. Was hoping for something amazing as it showed some Hawaiian promise. But as usual with Prospect street, you pay for the view. The Loco moco was really bland, the burger patty was extremely dry even cooked MED. The only thing that was saving me to finish the whole thing was that I was starving and I drenched the entire thing with more gravy. The gravy was blehhh too. Walked in after a walk on the coast trail and we were offered seats at the bar upstairs right away. Nice view but it was cold so we decided to sit inside but by the window. We arrived around 4pm on a Tuesday and thought they offered happy hour and Taco Tuesdays as it states on their website and menu but was disappointed when we found out from the server that they could not take our Taco Tuesday orders as they did not have enough staff but she offered their regular menu that also had tacos for a higher price.... I did not understand the logic there...She did honor the happy hour margarita price... We ordered the calamari and crab wantons. They were both very good. The calamari was tender and came with tartar sauce and cocktail sauce. The crab wantons were exceptionally good although I could not taste the crab, the macadamia nuts mixed in with the cream cheese made up for it. I was pleasantly surprised. We had an amazing experience at Duke's La Jolla. We were visiting La Jolla around early afternoon and there were already a lot of people there. We wanted to sit at the patio and they asked us to reserve a table and they'd open the patio at 2PM. We had about 15 minutes to spare so we took a stroll grabbed a coffee. When we returned at 2, there were at least 20 people waiting in line. They worked fast though and we were seated in 5-6 minutes. Our server was very nice, helpful and jolly. She made our experience eating at Duke's even better. We ordered burgers and nachos with beer. The food was just amazing. It was slightly chilly so they had the gas heaters places near the tables which made it nice and warm. The view was amazing. We loved watching the waves echo the flight of the seagulls and paragliders far off on the hills. This was a memorable lunch. read more

The food was not Hawaiian style at all...just by looking at my plate I can tell it was cafeteria food. The chicken was basically just marinated in soy sauce and ribs smothered w/ Kraft-like bbq sauce from a bottle over uncle Ben's rice. Oh and the big disappointment was the macaroni salad--nothing I've ever imagined or would even eat, basically pasta drenched in oil. The only thing they brings people here is the view. The Restaurant week menu was robbery and misleading, it does not include dessert its a "choice of dessert" vs pupus don't be fooled. Sis had the mahi mahi tacos, brother had the chicken and ribs with pasta salad, hubby had fish in mac pants with an amazing sauce and my sear ahi bowl was a delete to the eye and tummy. Decided to try Duke's for breakfast. Never again! First of all, if you offer breakfast at least have more than just black coffee to offer. Also, the avocado toast that I ordered was basically a salad with too much dressing on a piece of toast with a thin layer of some kind of avocado spread and a tiny poached egg. Ate like 3 bites of it and had to leave the rest. The salad dressing which tasted very vinagree, had soaked right through the bread and was literally inedible! Very disappointed. Good views though and the server was nice. But would not go back, at least not for breakfast.... read more

We watched 8 tables turn over while we were there for lunch on Saturday and only 2 of them were cleaned with any kind of liquid cleanser whatsoever, let alone sterilized... 2 were just lightly wiped with a rag, and 4 of them not even wiped down at all... just the crumbs swiped into a bus box. None of them were cleaned well and none of the chairs were wiped down at all. The burger was just okay, the fries were gross and soggy, and the ribs were old and chewy. I was really looking forward to trying Dukes for the first time. They have a great view. Guess that's what they count on. Floored that these folks aren't following pandemic protocols. I'm from LA and we were down in SD for my birthday started checking places to eat around the area and came across Duke's. Started looking at the menu before going and the ribs caught our eyes. Let me tell y'all it was very delicious. & the view was amazing. They had a 3-course special, got the Korean Sticky Ribs, followed by the Filet Mignon & I don't recall the desert but it was so satisfying. My boyfriend had the Rib & Chicken Plate he really enjoyed it. When we got in the car he said "I should've gotten a to-go plate". We were planning on going back to SD just to have Dukes when we discovered there's a closer one to us in HB. Anyways the food was very flavorful. The Mai tai was also really enjoyable. Okay, so here's the thing -- we went to this place on a whim (hubby and I), and we were not impressed. Our waiter was a bit odd - maybe he was high, maybe not, but he was just a bit strange. Anyway, I ordered the fish tacos, and I don't know what I expected, but it was NOT these tacos (and I don't mean that in a good way). I'm not sure what type of fish it was exactly, but I honestly could not even stomach it. I've never had cat food, but it made me think that that is what cat food tastes like. I had one bite and I just could not eat anymore. Not necessarily that it was Duke's fault, I just could not do that fish for some reason (and I'm not picky about fish usually, at all.). We had calamari for an appetizer, which was quite good -- big hearty chunks of body meat, not overcooked or over seasoned. They were almost perfect - there were a few burnt areas on the coating. The place was quite expensive for what we ordered in my opinion, even though we went during lunch when they have a few deals going on. Overall, I mean I guess I could recommend it if it's just something you were interested in trying, but on the other hand, I just really did not like the tacos, which makes me not want to recommend it. Worth the wait (if you don't get reservations, get on the list) for the food and the atmosphere. The fish and chips were indulgent, the ribs were meaty and cooked perfectly, and the cocktails were diverse - strong - and tasty! There was even live music! The first time we have been somewhere post covid that had someone playing and singing. Hillary, our server, was attentive, helpful, and made sure our plates were full and our glasses never emptied. Beautiful view of La Jolla with impressive food. As a family of 4 it's hard to impress the whole family. But Duke's impressed everyone. Nachos with pork was amazing appetizer. I would say they will feed 2-3 people for an app. The freshly grounded 1/2 lb burgers were a pleasant surprise. The rib & chicken meal is great. I was also able to sub my Mac salad for fries. Which isn't listed on the menu just ask. Hubby got the crusted fish. It was light & tasty. We all finished with the hula pie. Big enough for 4! Which was very impressive. Mai-Tai is strong & comes in a cool cup. Overall, we will be back. This will be a tradition for our La Jolla trips now. read more

Horrible customer service + hair in our dish. First of all, their website says to call the restaurant for reservations of parties 6 and above. We were a party of 8 and I really wanted to check out the place and celebrate my birthday there, so I called them 4 days in advance. They told me for a party of 6 and above they DO NOT MAKE RESERVATIONS AT ALL (quite the opposite to what their website says). The lady on the phone was very dry and rude. As someone who has worked in the customer service industry, I know one important thing is to leave out your emotions when talking to customers. She said that we can make 2 separate reservations of 4 people, but most likely we will not be seated at the same time, nor at the same table. It sounded very absurd and her tone was very unwelcoming. So I went to a different place instead. Next morning, we decided to give this place a second try. We were there for breakfast/lunchtime. This time, it was me and 3 of my guests. We asked for an ocean view table, and after an hour of wait time we were seated. There are no umbrellas or anything to protect the guests from the sun, so we requested to be reseated somewhere under the shade. Did not care about the ocean view as the sun was unbearable. One of the waiters told us it would be impossible, but Maddy was very nice and arranged it for us. We ordered coffee, steak, mango chicken salad, chicken katsu (comes with rice, greens and another side), and coconut shrimp (comes with rice, greens and another side) and their hula pie. Well, the coconut shrimp came with an extra side of THICK BLACK HAIR. I felt really disappointed and embarrassed, as it was the dish of one of my guests'. The guest did not say anything, but obviously, I felt really bad. The waiter did not get a chance to put the dish on the table when I told him to replace it, I can't believe that a hair so evident did not catch his attention before bringing out the dish. I would think that a place like that requires the chefs tie their hair or wear something to prevent a situation like that. The dish was replaced immediately and I did not want to make a scene, but it should have never happened on the first place. Anyone in my situation would made a scene and asked for an immediate refund. As someone in the industry, I know how management should have handled the situation, but I did not want to say anything in front of my guests since one of them already felt bad that they had to redo her dish. Although I doubt that they replaced it since it took them less than 5 mins to bring it back. Nor I wanted to say anything about the final check which included the coconut shrimp that had hair in it initially (the check was also mixed up with someone else's table and they brought the wrong one, which after signing it only they told me it wasn't mine) since I was the one paying for everyone. Overall, felt really uncomfortable with the situation, and regret giving them a second chance. read more
