Get here early before the crowd arrives! XLBs are good (I had the pork XLBs and the pork + crab XLBs), and I do seem to order them every time (in mass quantities, mind you), but I find them to be a little too salty. At the end of the day, though, it's so close to Harvard Square, and beggars can't be choosers. I am also a HUGE fan of the Sichuan boiled fish and order this nearly every time I come; it always tastes really authentic and is a total hit at the table. I absolutely loved the sauteed rice cakes with pork (pork is the best, but seafood is pretty good, too) and the sauteed water spinach with garlic, too. Both are so delicious but perhaps not for those who are afraid of oil. Also, you probably don't need as much food as you think you do. I almost always over-order, so don't be afraid to start light and add on more as you go! read more

I've been here several times and find it to be a solid neighborhood restaurant. There are better options in the Boston area, but in my opinion it's one of the best, safest less-Americanized Chinese options in its immediate vicinity (walking distance). The dishes are, in general, on the heavier/greasier side, but are pretty decent. The portions seem to depend on the type of dish. My wife and I went here today for lunch. We ordered mini juicy dumplings, pork cabbage dumplings and the ground pork with noodles (Northern Style). We liked the dumplings and we will certainly come back to try some other dishes. Update 7/7 We ate here about a month ago and got the mapo tofu. It was the best mapo tofu we've had in a long time. Also a big fan of the beef soup, it was well made. As for the dumplings, I still prefer them somewhere else but they're not bad here. read more

This place is above your average Chinese takeout joint. Everything we got was very flavorful, overall a step above most places I've been to. Not greasy and definitely not skimpy on the servings. -SESAME CHICKEN - perfectly breaded, not too doughy, little to no fat on the meat (I hate when it's all breading and chewy fatty chicken!) -SHANDONG DUMPLINGS - Simply delicious. Large, awesome flavor, perfectly fried. I didn't particularly like the dipping sauce though, for me it had too much vinegar. -SCALLION PANCAKES - We picked up our to-go order a little late (shame on us) so they weren't all that crispy, but I can't wait to try them on our next sit-in visit. Thrilled to have a decent Chinese food contender in the Central Square area! All the basics are there: decent space, friendly staff, good menu, and an okay price point - but I think they still have some kinks to work out. Food flavoring needs a little tweaking. Ma Po Tofu way too salty but otherwise had good flavoring. Sauteed rice cake and sauteed vegetables were cooked well (i.e., not over or under cooked), but way too oily. Tried three types of dumplings. Spicy chili oil wontons (szechwan wontons) were just covered in red oil, no real szechwan pepper taste or any contrasting/underlying flavor (e.g., green onion, garlic, soy, pickled vegetables). Soup dumplings were decent, but NOT on par with Joe's Shanghai in NYC - ours came out a little cool for my taste vs. the necessary piping hot. The Shangdong Style Pan Fried Dumplings were decent too. No liquor license yet, but sounds like that's in the works. Staff is friendly but still rather inexperienced (i.e., they don't really have a feel for what the customer needs when, and everyone seems to be working everywhere in the restaurant). That being said, if you're willing to flag down people and ask for what you want, it's so much better than the grumpy service you get at places like Mary Chung's. I'm rooting for these guys, and hope that it'll become more of a Central Square foodie stop vs. another mediocre Chinese fast-food spot. read more

Parking was easy to find not such a busy area. This place is small but luckily we didn't have to wait too long on a Saturday night. The servers we had were all very nice and helpful with any questions we had of the menu. We ordered a few different kinds of dumplings-soup dumplings, pork, chicken the few I remember. Here are the reasons: - Street parking is hard to find especially for Friday and weekend evenings. - Service is a nightmare. we had a party of five and was brought by a server to a table that had been reserved for another party (we, as customers, apparently had no idea of what's going on). So the service was really bad to begin with as we somehow took the blame from the manager. - Service is a nightmare. They charge 18% for gratitude no matter how many people your party has. - Service is a nightmare. We ordered another dish for take-out when asking for check. It took longer for them to prepare the food then swiping the credit card, apparently. After paying, we were asked to leave the table and wait outside for that take-out dish (it was 13 degree that night) so that they can sit another party. It was a horrible expience overall. The day I went it actually seemed to be managed by some second gens, which I found interesting. Really solid food, from what I ordered - Scallion pancake with beef: probably the best I've had in the Boston area so far. Super rich, almost glutinous scallion pancake, just the right amount of sauce, spiced beef and scallions. If I lived closer to central square, I could see myself coming here alone on a pity night and eating an entire one while streaming something imbecilic online - Mustard greens and pork noodle soup: You probably can't get this wrong, but it was so very good. We just came back from Dumpling House and we swore never to return. Zero Stars! First the noise. The restaurant is just plain old loud. At first we were seated next to a waitress station where the waitresses shouted at each other in loud, piercing voices. Then we were moved to a table near the kitchen; the problem there was a constant deep rumble. Staff members spoke loudly to each other over the heads of diners. With some exceptions, the wait staff tends to be inattentive and minimally polite. The food was also not good. The chicken and sausage fried dumplings weren't tasty and were very greasy. My wife had the Braised Tofu with Scallions and Vegetables; the tofu was uninteresting at best, drowning in soy sauce. The vegetables were just a couple of carrots and a small piece of broccoli. I ordered Sliced Beef Szechuan Style. What came out was a large bowl of beef slices and cabbage BOILED in a brown spicy soup. The beef was tender, but had no flavor of beef at all. The flavor of the soup was completely overwhelming. If I hadn't been so hungry, I would have sent it back. Just bad. Overall bad. read more

I live in Syracuse, have traveled to many places and can never find soup dumplings but to much of my surprise I found a place in Boston! I was thrilled and the dumplings were amazing. This review is actually 2.5 stars. Came here today for their lunch special, where you can get 3 dishes from a select list for about 25$. We got their clam with basil, eggplant with basil, and some green veggies with garlic. There was a vegetarian soup that came with the lunch special that was pretty good, but everything pretty much went downhill from there. The green veggie dish was very bland. The eggplant dish was alright, but very mediocre. And the clam dish. DO NOT GET THIS unless you want to feel like you have a beach in your mouth. Every clam I ate had sand in it. I had to wash it down with a gulp of water. No thank you. Our waiter also never even came by our table to check on us to see how everything was, even though he wasn't busy and was just chilling and sitting down by himself. If you want to eat this type of cuisine I highly recommend you save your time and money by going to JoJo Taipei, which is a Taiwanese cuisine, but they have many of the same dishes. So good! Had the soup dumplings to start. Yummy. A little doughy imho but very good. We ordered a chicken dish and a pork dish. We asked for spicey because we like to live dangerously. Really, really solid spot. I come often enough for lunch that some staff give me a nod when I walk in (HEYOOO!). I usually come with my vegger friend and here's what we get: mushroom with greens (baby bok choy) lunch special, steamed spinach dumplings (somehow better than fried?), and if we're going all-out then the ma-po tofu, too. Some of the best soup dumplings around. In between Central and Harvard squares in Cambridge on Mass Ave, Dumpling House fills up quickly. You may expect a wait, but it is sure worth it. Several large family-style tables are available. The restaurant has a few separate areas and has the vibe of a Chinatown restaurant with the hustle and bustle of fast service and a loud atmosphere. Great for parties of two or ten. As one would expect (and hope), the dumplings are the star and the mini soup dumplings with pork are delightful with the chewy and slightly crusty dough of the dumpling oozing with a savory broth with a generous stuffing of ground pork. Pour the vinegar sauce slowly over the dumpling, bite a small hole, slurp, enjoy. The menu is quite large. Depending on the size of the party, would recommend one fish, one meat, and one vegetable dish. Option for spicy Szechuan style, Taiwanese, or even "Americanized" Chinese dishes. I'm sure the "Americanized" dishes are perfectly fine but do try to branch out. Take the Szechuan dried spicy chicken - its like a simple chicken nugget but with a flash of heat, served with a heaping portion of sliced dried peppers. The sliced fish Szechuan style is lovely. The small portion (large also available) is enough for two to share with other dishes. What is more satisfying than a bowl of spicy red pepper broth with tender white fish, bok choy, and cabbage on a cool fall evening? You may even catch a Szechuan peppercorn or two. read more

This place was very underwhelming for me. I was visiting Boston for Memorial Day weekend. I figured since dumping was in the name, to try the dumplings. I had the soup dumplings, the spinach dumplings and seafood dumplings with a few cold dishes to pair. The good: sautéed potatoes, good level of spice and acidity and fairly well executed. The okay: seafood dumplings tasted decent nothing special but nothing to really complain. The Ehh: the soup dumplings had no soup and the meat does not taste fresh. A few of the cold dishes tasted okay but drenched in hot oil to a point where it's a bit unpleasant. The bad: The spinach dumplings had a very strange taste and after taste that's like wet paint and cardboard. Overall for a place called "dumpling house" I expected more from the dumplings. read more
