My wife and I have been eager to try soup dumplings for sometime now and while on vacation in Boston ma we said to ourselves why not give it a try. Dumpling House is definitely the best place in Cambridge to get authentic Chinese food. As a vegetarian, I had a ton of options on their menu. The scallion pancakes were amazing as well as the vegetarian dumplings. Definitely a good idea to go family style at this restaurant so that you can try a variety of the dishes. The menu offers a ton of options that range from dumplings, noodles, and meat & vegetable dishes. The staff was extremely helpful and brought out our food very quickly. The main chef even came out and greet us at the end of our meal to make sure it was enjoyable. She was extremely friendly and made sure the food met our expectations. Service overall was great. My friends and I were even offered tea and water while we waited for our table. I would definitely recommend this restaurant! The crowd was huge by 6pm when we went on a weekday night, but the place is big enough to hold everybody. The place is loud and filled with families with hungry small children and groups with hungry small adults (me) alike. So don't bring a date here, but maybe your roommate or your sweatpants. Get the shangdong style dumplings (山东煎饺) - crispy, HOT, juicy, and a really generous portion. We also got the pork and leek dumplings (steamed instead of pan-fried) which were also delicious. We had the pea pod shoots, pan fried dumplings, crystal shrimp dumplings, and the soup dumplings. All excellent with varied tastes and freshness. The service was fast and although we waited to be seated for about a half hour, it was worth the wait. Definitely a treat. read more

Enjoyed my first time here! Despite being with a very, VERY large group, the service was still great. The food came out fast, which is really a big feat because we were tackling the dishes with record speed. The dishes were so good we ordered seconds of almost everything. Some of them did leave a bit to be desired, but for the most part, I had absolutely no complaints. We got the green tea mochi ice cream for dessert--which was good, but it was very obviously the frozen, supermarket ones. We sat for over 15 minutes waiting for the waiter to come to our table ( restaurant was not busy). Not courteous, friendly or welcoming. Each dish that was delivered to our table was dropped off by different waitresses, not a smile to be had by any. OH where to start? First off, we were not allowed to change seats to the windowed room because they claimed there was a party of 30 coming (that party never came). Drinks are important, right? We had to pull a bottle of Gatorade out of my bag so we'd have something to drink, as we were never offered beverages... not even water. Here's the big deal: IF YOU HAVE ALLERGIES... BE VERY CLEAR WITH YOUR SERVER! My boyfriend has a shellfish allergy. He communicated this to our server. Server did not understand what that meant. He brought another server over, and she also did not understand what "shellfish allergy" meant (lack of allergy training and language barrier combined). BUT she assured us that the dish was fish free. The dish comes out (10 minutes after my food), and it is riddled with SHRIMP. So we ask to speak to a manager, and the third server tells us the manager is busy. We insist, and finally a manager comes over. To their credit, the manager handled the situation very well, and remedied the situation. But be aware if you have allergies... you have to enact all your detective skills to figure out if your dish will kill you. We will certainly never go back. read more

If you want some amazing soup dumplings in Cambridge, you don't even have to cross the river They also have quite a variety of interesting and flavorful dishes. Soup dumplings aside, particular favorites include Beef with Long Horn Peppers (by themselves or in a noodle soup; Dried Bean Curd with Long Horn Peppers is also good) and the Special Lamb with Cumin (a very strongly flavored dish with sesame, Sichuan peppercorns, dry red peppers, and a huge amount of whole cumin). I was impressed with Dumpling House. We went on a Friday night when it was packed, and yet we still only had to wait for (barely) 15 minutes! We didn't feel rushed while we were eating either. We got somewhat obscure menu items, but 4 out of the 5 things we had were delicious. Soup dumplings were great, as were some rice cake dish and Northern noodle salad. Stir-fried vegetables were solid. The one dish we did not like was the three cups chicken; the sauce was cloyingly sweet and the chicken had unpredictable bits of bone hanging around in it. I can't comment on how authentic the food was, but it was pretty tasty. This is definitely not health food though...everything was pretty oily/salty/MSG-y. I appreciate that we were seated relatively quickly, and not rushed through our meal. I heard a lot of good reviews about this place which is why I swung by here twice during my stay in Cambridge. The place was jam packed all the time, but the servers were really nice and were able to seat me almost immediately after I had walked in. I tried the Shanghai soup dumplings, sizzling beef on a hot plate, and the Szechuan Sliced Fish. The texture of the dumplings was really silky, the meat was really fresh, and the servings were incredibly generous compared to what I normally get at Cha Chan Tengs. I was slightly disappointed that there was not enough flavor in the broth, but otherwise it was still good. The beef plate and the fish would've been perfect except they were a bit too salty and oily respectively. The plus is that it is within walking distance of Harvard Square and relatively close to MIT. I was not too impressed with this place. Considering they're called Dumpling House their dumpling selection is pretty small. We got the soup dumplings and the leek, vegetable, and dried shrimp buns. The soup dumplings were a little bland, with not much soup in them, and the vegetable buns were really dry and not very good. We also got the oyster pancake, which I liked but the rest of the table wasn't wild about. I didn't get a single bite of oyster, but I did get a runny egg yolk (which I love), and I liked the combination of sticky-gooey rice pancake, greens, and egg. Boyfriend got the sesame chicken which was surprisingly good (way better than our local delivery). My mom got some kinda clam dish, I didn't really notice it because I don't like clams. I got the Szechuan fish, expecting a lot of spice and fish. The fish was good and cooked well, but there wasn't a lot of it. However, there was a lot of cabbage. A LOT of cabbage. There was also a ton of inedible chili casings on top. And I don't mean they were inedible because they were spicy, I mean they're literally inedible. I had to spend a lot of time picking them out. The sad thing is, despite all the chilis, it still wasn't very spicy. The service was great, very attentive and fast. Meh. I've experienced better. I would avoid any noodle/rice dish that has an "or vegetables" option if you want to have something leafy/green/flavorful in it. In their vision, vegetables means load up on carrots and celery. No tofu despite specifically asking for vegetarian noodles with tofu. Barely anything to accompany noodles but brown sauce, a pile of carrots and celery, and a bit of snow peas and broccoli. Nothing else. Not even onion. Also ordered "tomato" pancakes. I'm willing to bet that anything on the menu that says tomato means potato. Maybe I'm wrong, but it's a gamble, and that was just an odd dish to pair with Asian style noodles. I've been coming to Dumpling House for five years and will probably keep ordering from them, but the prices have gone WAY UP, more than I would have expected. Now, the bad: The Mango Chicken dish is now close to $20 and I remember when it was closer to $15. That adds up over time and the size of the dish itself is certainly not reflective of the $20 value. I'll preface this review by saying that although I enjoy Dumpling House in Chinatown, I actually prefer other Chinatown restaurants over it - both because of taste and usually how long it takes to get in. I was fairly excited about a Dumpling House opening up in between Harvard and Central Square. I probably went a little too early because it seems like they're still working out a bunch of kinks. The three stars are because although I really wanted to like the place, I found it to be just middling. First impressions of the service wasn't great. I went on a Tuesday night and upon arriving, it took 5 minutes of standing in front of the desk before the person manning the front counter even looked up from what she was doing to acknowledge me. It took a few more minutes to get me seated and another 10 minutes to get my son a high chair. None of the wait staff even seemed to notice that I was sitting there with my son. Eventually I did manage to get my order in. The food ended up being just ok. I got pig's feet noodle soup, xiao long bao, potstickers, and scrambled egg with tomatoes and shrimp. The potstickers definitely stood out. The dough was really good and crisped just the right amount. The pig's feet, however, was too tough. It's supposed to be tender and soft and the skin and meat should fall off the bone easily. I found myself gnawing at it to get something out of it. I was really not impressed with the scrambled egg with tomatoes and shrimp. Not the least is because when they first gave me the dish, it didn't have any shrimp in it. They took it back and 5 minutes later came back with small shrimp that was cold - just added to the same dish. I had half expected them to actually stir in some shrimp, but it was basically just sprinkled on top of the dish they previously served. That being said, I realize that most of this is probably just due to ramping up the restaurant. It did, after all, just open a little over a week ago. The food was pretty good but the service was TERRIBLE. They were pretty rude and tried to avoid eye contact so that they wouldn't have to help us. One employee even put her finger in my mother's face and said "wait a minute!" when my mom asked for extra napkins. They slammed the food down on the table and couldn't tell us what was in each dish (asked due to seafood and nut allergies). Darling new place, lovely staff (super friendly!) and tasty food. I must disclaim that I've only had one dish here - spicy fish. But it was good. Very good. I'm a huge fan of Szechuan spicy fish, which is a difficult dish to make very well. All too many Chinese restaurants around town just don't make it well. So I always get it and judge a place at least partially by how well they make their spicy fish. For a long while, only Thailand Cafe could make spicy fish well in the Harvard/Central area. After Thailand Cafe closed, the spicy fish in town swam away to murkier further inaccessible waters. A friend and I came to eat here today, and the spicy fish (C1) is available in 2 sizes, small and large. We ordered the small size, coming as coy and noncommittal fish... skirting the bait but not yet biting. It was so good that we ordered another one.... and then a third one, and a fourth one. The waiter chuckled that we should have just ordered the large (or two), and took pity on our lack of foresight and gave us a discount. =) I have no reservations to recommend that you come fish for tasty dishes at Dumpling House. I don't think there's a better Chinese place in Cambridge, and I, for one, love having this place as a neighborhood Chinese place. I've been here many times, and have never really been disappointed. I've read a number of reviews on here saying this place is loud, but really Chinese food is a pretty social activity, and it wouldn't be loud if it wasn't full. It wouldn't be full if it wasn't good. I think especially in Asian countries, this restaurant is a bit representative - you're not going to get a traditional western dining experience. The staff won't be that attentive naturally - you have to speak up. Flag them down. Yell "fuwuyuan!!". As a testament to the cultural authenticity, I recently dined here with a vegetarian, and the waitress warned me about onions and other vegetables in the vegetarian dishes that buddhists couldn't eat. As for the food, it's made in a deeply greasy fashion (fried and southern). If that's not what you're looking for, maybe this isn't really the right restaurant, as that's sort of the style. A lot of the vegetable dishes are a little less oily, but for example, the cumin lamb is made in a battered-and-fried Taiwanese/southern Chinese way, as opposed to a Henan/Xi'an kind of way that is a lot of meat sliced thinly that you may think of. You're going to get more cuts of fat in your meat, and if you love that, you'll enjoy this place. As for the dumplings, they're pretty good. Contrary to what I just said above, I think their steamed dumplings are actually much better than their fried dumplings. Hadn't tried food from Dumpling House before so decided to give them a try for delivery via Door Dash for dinner. While I ordered the sauteed rice cakes I received sauteed rice noodles instead. I knew Door Dash warns clients that replacements could happen if something was unavailable at the restaurant. However, I found their noodles to be too oily and tasteless. Wouldn't mind the replaced meal if the dish was good quality but was not impressed by their version of a lo mein type of dish. read more

After hearing hype about the Dumpling House, I had high expectations for the food and I'm happy to report back that this place met and exceeded my expectations. I left the ordering to my Chinese foodie expert friend and prepared myself for the feast. I recommend coming with a large group of people so you can order family style and try a variety of dishes. We ordered the eggplant, hot and sour soup, soup dumplings, spicy fish soup, scallion pancakes, and a beef dish. Every single dish was excellent, but the two dishes that really stood out to me were the eggplant and the scallion pancakes. The scallion pancakes were crispy without being too oily and with a party of five, there was plenty for everyone. The eggplant was perfectly cooked and also came with chicken, smothered in a tangy sauce. As for the service, the waitresses promptly refilled our tea when it was empty and checked back on us frequently to see if we needed more food. I thought the service was efficient and readily available. If you're on the hunt for some bomb Chinese food, I would highly highly recommend Dumpling House! read more

It is very close to my work, and it was emergency on Jan. 20 in our office. So, I ended up in Dumpling House for quick lunch ordering chicken dumplings and A26 Northern Chinese style pork teriyaki just to try something what is not mentioned anywhere but on Dumpling House menu. I was given two pieces of dry cold meat (didn't taste like pork) with fat and tendons, without any trace of teriyaki, but in excessive amount of Cajun seasoning and dipped in dry dill seeds. I am sure "Northern" stays for Boston, and approach is that Americans will swallow everything. The best advice is to change recipe or remove this from menu. As about dumplings, dough is thick and too soft not from overcooking, but from too much water in the dough and the cheapest flour. I would rather have 8 pieces but better quality. So, it was fresh. Dipping souse was like mix of soy souse and vinegar with untidy chopped pieces, by the way, souse dish doesn't fit in plate souse compartment. A perfect sister to Gourmet Dumpling House, but without the lines!! The food is always wonderful (and fast!). We got the (1) mini juicy pork dumplings - delicious, a bit tricky to eat, but the waitress will show you how if you tell her it's your first time eating a soup dumpling, (2) Sandong Style Pan Fried Dumplings - just ok, they taste like any old dumpling, nothing special, (3) Eggplant in basil sauce - fantastic, not too oily. This place is amazingly delicious!!! I went here the day my wisdom teeth were pulled looking to get soup or some sort of soft noodles. Ended up getting the noodles with pork dumplings and it was so good. I of course was limited in what i could eat and had to use a fork and knife to eat dumplings (they only have chopsticks on the table). The waitress was very nice about it as we explained I had surgery and couldn't eat normal. My boyfriend for dumplings and rice cakes with chicken and loved it!!! The only weird thing is that they sell drinks by the cannot bottle. No fountain machine. I couldn't tell you why it doesn't get more consistently excellent reviews here. This is one of my favorite spots for Chinese, particularly Sichuan food, in Boston. You definitely need to know what to order first: we always gets the vegetarian mapo tofu, sliced Sichuan fish, and seafood hot pot. Dumplings not worth it, ironically, for pescatarians. We orders hot and soup soup, vegetarian dumplings, pan fried noodles, fish in black bean sauce, and tofu with mustard greens and edamame. The meal could be summed up two words: flavorless slop.
