Some caveats: This place seems to be in the middle of a rebrand to Dumpling King. Not sure what's going on, but it made finding the restaurant confusing. The building sign says Dumpling King, not Taste of Home, so we drove right past it at first. The windows have both names on them, and the menus and plateware are Dumpling King branded. Second caveat: We came specifically because my husband is on a quest to find braised pork feet (he loves them--odd, I know, especially for a white guy). An older menu online had pork trotters listed, but the new Dumpling King menu doesn't include them. Instead, they've got a more straightforward lineup of braised meats and dumplings geared toward a pretty standard palate. That said, the food was fine, but nothing stood out. It's been a few weeks since we went, and I honestly can't even remember exactly what we ate. Nothing blew us away, but nothing was bad either. We came on a Tuesday at around 2:30pm and there was one other customer in there. The restaurant had plenty of tables and chairs. There is a clear window where you can see the kitchen crew making homemade dumplings. When we got in we were greeted by a waitress and she told us we can sit where ever we pleased. Once we sat down she asked for our drinks and proceeded to tell us we can order by scanning the QR code to place the order and pay. The QR code taped to the table did not work very well for it took about 5 minutes until it worked. I usually do not have any trouble scanning QR codes. The page was very limited in options to order compare to the in person menu given... I ordered the general tso chicken, beef lo miễn and shrimp dumplings. General tso chicken had good flavor and was crispy. Some pieces had more batter than others and other pieces were less batter with more chicken. Also the pieces with bigger chunks of chicken were pink inside. I think they were raw so I stopped eating it. The beef lo mien was SUPER SALTY and was uneatable. The shrimp dumplings had 1 piece of super tiny shrimp in it and the rest was filled with chives and fluff. It was very underfilled and hardly can be consider shrimp filled. I felt bad for the shrimp because it didn't have a long life to mature and grow before being used for dumplings. Shrimp used was imported. First time to TOHD, and I place an order to go through their online ordering portal. I grab 3 packs of dumplings: shrimp dumplings, beef and celery dumplings, and chive egg dumplings, all boiled with each order containing 12 dumplings. When you order them to-go, they package each dumpling into its own individual holding cell. The dough wrappers were supple and not overly doughy, not soggy, and definitely held together. Mouth-wise, the dough was soft, thin, with a clean bite. The beef dumplings were clean, but flavorwise nothing for your tastebuds to write home about. The celery peanuts had a pleasant flavor and were enjoyable to snack on. I enjoyed the sliced beef and beef tripe in chili paste. Neither item was chewy; in fact each was quite tender with the same consistency throughout all the slices in the dish. This dish is not saucy; in fact there is no excess sauce contained in that dishes contained. The slices seem to be tossed in chili sauce, so the flavor is present, but lacks any intensity of numbness or heat. The pan-fried pork buns were neatly organized in their containers. The dough was light and airy. The insides were pork. Overall, flavorwise, this is "comfortable, lackadaisical, forgettable" flavor. But the care, preparation, and texture of their dishes is on point. So if you want well-prepared comfort food that is not greasy, this place can give you that belly rub. If you're expecting to be wowed, this place is not it. Then again, dumplings can be a difficult medium to impress on with flavor. But texture wise, I was quite impressed with how consistent every single bite was. I have mixed feelings about their takeout packaging. Yes, they make sure the dumplings don't stick to each other and are not soggy. However, those containers are very flimsy. If you ordered a lot like I did, you'll have a bunch of stacked flimsy containers. Add in the little capsules containers of chili sauce (which leak), and the bag containing your order may become oily during handling and transport. This place has an interesting menu for dumplings. Because none of the fillings appealed to us we ended getting the pan fried pork buns, spicy beef noodle soup, and the pork belly rice bowl. Oddly the dishes came out very spaced out. First was the pork belly bowl which my partner ate first. It looks like a lot but the majority was rice. I did like the tofu and it had soaked up a lot of flavors. Next was the beef noodle soup. It has a good kick to it but I felt the beef was a little chewy for my liking. Came here on a Saturday around 6pm and there was no wait at all. I've been here a few times before but that was a few months ago. A lot of things have changed. This time a friendly waitress actually greets us and sits us down. You can order from the QR code on the table or if you are too lazy to input your info on the phone, just walk up to the counter and order. The music is soft and the vibe is very relaxing, almost intimate. Here is the breakdown of the food Xiao long bao (5/5) The word Xiao in "Xiao long bao" means small. These...by no means are small at all. In fact, they are the biggest I've ever ate! My best way to eat it? Pick up the hard tip of the bao with your fingers, and put it onto a soup spoon. Bite off a small opening on the side and blow into the hole to cool it down inside. Take some vinegar (my fav dressing) and pour it on top. Eat it all in one bite or two and it'll taste amazing! Cuttlefish dumplings (5/5) This is healthy, flavorful and the skin is soft yet hard enough to not rip when you pick it up with your spoon or chopstick. Tastes amazing with some hot chili sauce! Salt and pepper shrimp (4/5) This dish is very flavorful with a solid helping of jalapenos, broccoli and onions. It's not that salty and not that peppery, I think it's just right. Comes with a side of rice. Tofu puff (4/5) Comes in 4 pieces. It's very very moist and flavorful. The flavor has a very strong Chinese herby taste to it so it might not appeal to everyone. Hot and sour soup (3/5) Very strong white pepper taste a little bit on the salty side. Not the best I've had but it's not bad either. I'd say decent. The menu is littered with spelling and grammar mistakes, and we kind of sat around joking about it. At first I thought they were misspelling the items on purpose because it's so obvious but... I don't think so. My only gripe is when they come clean a table next to you, they use this really strong chemical agent that smells like what they use to clean the bathroom. We had the steamed shrimp dumplings and fried pork shrimp and chive. It's recommended to taste the dumpling first with no sauce to truly enjoy the flavors and fragrance. We also got the pork feet in special sauce as a side. The sauce was delicious and spicy, and if you enjoy chewy textures or eating collagen, you should like this dish also. I personally think it would taste better warm, but the spicy sauce makes up for the heat. Milk teas were very sweet, but creamy and cold - wish they had a boba as an addition. Drove to Austin for a sushi buffet but only to find out it's the wrong location...it's in Houston. Anyway, we ended up here at the Asian center and saw this "handmade" place. The place looks clean and organized, we were starving and the smell inside is good. They messed-up our orders, the rest of the diners who arrived after us were already served their food and we were still waiting. I can't comprehend why it took them that long to prepare and serve steamed and fried dumplings. After following it up, that's the only time they paid attention to our orders. A gentleman server even brought us a platter of 12 fried dumplings which was supposed to be only 8-pieces steamed dumplings. We were really hungry/starving so the food seemed to be good tasting but actually there's nothing extraordinary or special here. No wonder there's not a lot of people coming in or lining up to get in here to dine. We just considered it as a unique experience and at least we could say we have tried dining at this place. I love it here! It is a very cute environment and it looks new. You are handed menus and when you are ready, you can scan the QR code on the table to place the order on your phone. For some reason, I didn't have the order button on my phone, but luckily my friend did. We got the first two "must-order dumplings" on the menu. The pork shrimp and chives was my favorite. Classic and great for shrimp lovers! Pork pickled cabbage was also nice. Great if you like some sourness! You can choose the different sauces on the table and there's a paper that encourages you to try the dumplings by themselves first, which I did. Each table has a black vinegar, soy sauce and chili oil (I think that's the last one). Our group ordered the main three: Pork Shrimp & chives; Pork Pickled cabbage; and lamb cilantro dumplings. They were all steamed and tasted pretty decent. We also ordered pan fried dumplings and those were really good. It was crispy and tasted great with the dipping sauce. Let's call this the Din Tai Fung of ATX (owner says xiao long bao coming on the menu in a few months) as you can watch the dumplings being assembled by hand when you order. The pork feet have mainland china spices and served cold. All the dumplings were excellent. They are all on the smaller side, and have different flavors but obvi the pan fried are the best so order a lot! Beef maybe won top award slightly edging out the pork/chive for us. Ordering/paying is off a qr code at the table and food is delivered to the table which is an excellent system I think. Excellent/friendly service! Cant wait to go again. read more

The noodles and dumplings here are tasty. I got a dozen of the pan-fried pork and chive dumplings. The filling was tasty and you got a burst of the liquor from the filling as you bite into the dumpling. The dumpling skin has a nice chewy texture that has a good bounce so not like your typical supermarket dumpling. There's an open kitchen area where you can view your dumplings being made so you can definitely see and taste how fresh these are. I also hit me a beef noodle soup. Again the star here is the noodles. I could have opted for the spicy version of the beef noodle soup but decided to just season in myself with the sauces available table side - this is the typical way where you season it to your liking especially for a very casual place. As for service, there is table service but when I came the server was busy at the counter so I just ordered there and then I was seated. Food was brought to my table so I didn't need to pick up my food. You can also order via QR code if you don't want to deal with people at all. There were people making the dumplings too much like Din Tai Fung lol but the menu was limited and we had a hard time figuring what to order. The price point is a tad high too but we went ahead and tried several dumplings. Steamed and boiled. The least funky ones. I gotta say I am giving them a generous 4 stars bc this place was clean. And new. I like the cute condiment bar area and I like how the dumplings came out. Very nice attention to detail in serving ware and bamboo steamers. The taste was ok. Not bad but not wowed. Idk if I would come back. Because of the price point. I have my usually dumpling places like Julie's to get my fix in town or I go to Houston and Dallas for legit dumplings. Firstly, I'm a better fan of thinner wraps and noodle shaped than thicker of ones of Julie's Chef Hong and Fat Dragon. This is why I keep returning and don't mind the minimal service/interaction. Unfortunate but this is the way it is for some places now, like Shanghai Dimsum or even your bars and American restaurants. They make their dumplings fresh through the window. Visit one: Out of all the beef noodle places, Taste of Homemade Dumplings is my favorite. The broth is flavorful, thick and meat tendered and stewed well. The vegetables isn't just iceberg lettuce that consumes the bowl. Also, noodles are freshly made and you can add as much spice from the spice buffer as you want. Side of freshly made dumplings or chilled woodear mushrooms The steam dumplings I am also a fan of the wrapping. The meat is less filled than the pan fried ones clearly but the flavor was great and the steam allowed for trapped juices which bursts in the mouth each time. Visit X: Had Taste of Homemade Dumplings again. Still good, fresh and al dente noodles still how I like it. Spicy Beef Noodle Soup, has more Sichuan chili oil topping than most places and it's actually spicy. It's more forwarding than the soup broth flavors itself. Noodle we're great and they came with adequate tender beef shanks. I think this is a once in awhile soup since it's an oily dish altogether. Would recommend the regular beef noodle soup since you can taste the broth better. Pan fried shrimp and pork chives dumplings is still our number one order. Always want wings on my dumplings. Pork Feet in secret sauce had a very addicting sauce. Sweet braided sauce. Personally with the work involved in these, I would go for the pig ears which had equally good flavor but less work. Although if you insist on the work, the skin had a good crunch from being served cold The woodear mushrooms were different this time like it was too quick or didn't marinate yet. The description confused me as I thought it was mustard greens and mushrooms but it's mustard oil. Still good and recommend with extra fresh chili. It's very refreshing. You don't feel like you're eating half of what feels like just oil that makes some fried rice so heavy. This place knows how to cook up a bowl that will leave you wanting more.
