We went here early on a Saturday evening to avoid the crowds and were immediately seated at a small table in the back. A young man brought us hot tea and a little dish of peanuts. Our server came minutes later and took our order. We started with the chicken and corn soup and were surprised at how good it was. Between two of us, we finished every drop! For entrees, I ordered the Shanghai pork dumplings while my partner ordered the crab and pork dumplings and walnut prawns. Everything was delicious! We ate so much soup that we took about half of the dumplings and nearly all of the walnut prawns home. The food and service was excellent and the restaurant was not noisy. This place is extremely reliable for your craving of xiao long baos or shanghainesse soup dumplings. The soup in the dumplings are perfectly seasoned and are extremely affordable. Besides the soup dumplings, the pan-fried rice cakes, veggies, and potstickers are extremely delicious as well! If you are a health freak, you can ask for less oil and less fat when you order. This is now my new go-to place for XLBs!!! They are delicious. The chef is standing in a little window in the back folding the wrapper delicately and steaming it as you order it. SO YUMMY! No more Ding Tai Fung for me...this place is way better. And we also tried their other dishes like hot and sour soup, also really good. The trick is to show up right as they open so you don't have to wait for a long time to get a table. The restaurant isn't huge but it's remodeled and clean. Whenever I visit a restaurant for the first time, I ask for recommendations and ask what are the most popular dishes. It was suggested that I order the dumplings... they are the "Dumpling King" afterall... so I ordered 2 of the most popular dumplings (according to cashier - the shrimp and the pork). The soup dumplings were almost exactly like the ones I had at Din Tai Fung in Shanghai. We ordered based off of YELP photos the: walnut shrimp (so good, not too mayonnaisey, I'm craving it right now), pork dumplings, Sechwan noodles, pea sprouts, wontons in chili oil and the green onion pancake. This restaurant is near residential area, so it is relatively easy to find parking. We came as a group of 6, so we got a round table by the back corner after 15 mins wait, not too bad. We came for lunch and ordered many dishes to share, I would recommend soup dumpling/ xiao lung bao (their signature dumplings) as well as the braised pork belly. The dumplings of course is no match for Din Tai Fung, but it is not bad for a local Chinese restaurant. The skin of the dumpling could be thinner and the meat inside is a little greasy, but there's a good amount of broth. The dumpling is definitely good quality at its price range. I was really surprised by the braised pork belly. It was SO delicious! It was a big portion with some veggies on the side. The layer of fat is not too thick, so I don't feel too guilty eating the skin plus that layer of fat. The entire pork belly is well seasoned, not too salty, and it was so tender! Pork gets tough and chewy easily but this pork belly is so soft, and it does not take any effort to chew it. Service is ok, typical family style Chinese restaurant. Price is reasonable. When I think of the food from here, I literally just feel warm and happy inside. Their soup dumplings are just too good to pass up. Still a fan of this place after 5 years of not coming back, but the quality of the food has certainly dropped. The atmosphere and food all remind me of home. Their pan-fried buns and potstickers taste exactly like how my mom makes them, and they're damn cheap for the quantity and quality you get. The XLB aren't like the traditional Shanghai ones, so don't expect a paper-thin wrapper with hot juices inside. This one is thicker and more lukewarm. When it comes to the string beans and pan-fried noodle dishes, their chef is using a heavy hand with soy sauce now, and most dishes come out too salty. However, the food is still a solid price for the handmade quality you're getting. You could do much worse. read more

We ordered chicken with mixed vegetables, Shanghai pork dumplings with a little side of rice of course. It was absolutely delicious. Downfall was we ordered won ton and vegetable soup. One bite into it tasted like dish water. I had my boyfriend take a sip in case I was tasting things and he said it was awful as well. We asked if we can return it because we didn't like it. The staff looked at us crazy and then was clearly Talking about us a few steps away. Just a little awkward. We got our check and was surprise that we both had full bellies for only $26 bucks. Ordered five different dim sum dishes from the menu including Shanghai steamed soup dumplings. It was a steamy pile of mush. Everything we ordered tasted like someone bought some cheap frozen crap and microwaved or fried them. and yes, you guessed it, it was all pretty darn disgusting. Never going there ever again. Expensive, low quality, garbage food. I know that it's a business and it needs to make profit, but don't scam your customers with way subpar food. And don't let the yelp pictures fool you, the actual food looks nothing like that. Only positive side, the young wait staff crew are efficient and nice. Overall, save yourself a trip and wallet, go to house of pancakes and or kingdom of dumpling (where everything is actually handmade by some old Chinese ladies on a daily basis). I was really sad that they ran out of the Pork buns when we were there but everything else was good! The restaurant is small so wait time is about 25 minutes to an hour. My friend stopped by here a few weeks ago and posted tons of tasty-looking IG photos that just begged me to come check this place out. The perfect opportunity presented itself last week when my family was visiting SF. Rating Breakdown: 1/2 Stars for Taste -- We went a little carb crazy... we ordered the sheng jian bao (pan fried dumplings), green onion pancake, dan dan noodles, wontons in chili oil, chinese ham and rice clay pot, and fried buns with condensed milk. The most disappointing thing was probably the wontons. The wontons themselves were aiite, but the sauce was more peanut than chili oil. The rice clay pot was nothing to write home about -- salty ham, salty rice. The onion pancake was like no other onion pancake I've had before. It was very flaky but not very flavorful. I guess I just prefer my green onion pancake on the denser, chewier side. Even the fried buns were like, meh. Hot. Crispy. Sometimes when you're a little more outside of the city, the best thing to crave is dumplings! In the avenues, we are spoiled with good dumplings and dim sum. Dumpling Kitchen does not disappoint. Been here twice now and both times the dumplings were great. I'll admit, I like the atmosphere and pace here better during the week vs the weekend. I wouldn't order the onion pancake, that was one item that came out flat compared to the first time we had it. Definitely order steamed or pan fried dumplings, depending on how healthy you're trying to be. The staff is pretty friendly here. They're super patient with us, even when we're being loud and obnoxious. Definitely need to wave to call to their attention, but it was packed. The night I came during the week was a lot more intimate/personalized service since less people. Prices went up since more people have been trying here instead of the other dumpling place a couple blocks down. ;) read more

Some of my all time favorites: Shanghai dumps ("soup dumplings") cabbage pork dumps Each order comes with around 8 dumps, and between wanting to order several to share and a vegetable plate, one can get very full on not that much money. They also have great lunch specials during the week that come with a choice of entree and rice or chow-mein for a small upcharge. I came here with a bunch of (mostly Chinese) friends and we really enjoyed the dumplings! We had xiao long bao (of course), potstickers, boiled dumplings (pork), and the pan fried pork buns (sheng jian bao). All the dumplings were great. The pork buns were just okay. I've had better elsewhere (the ones at Gourmet Noodle House are SO GOOD). I lost track of how many plates we ordered, but we def ordered a LOT. And it only came out to $16 per person, which I thought was a great deal for the large quantity of dumplings that were consumed (one of my friends prides himself on being able to eat 60 or more...). Also, I'm by no means a vinegar fanatic, but a couple of my friends are suuuuuuuuuper picky about the type/brand of black vinegar they like to eat with dumplings, so they ended up pestering our waiters quite a bit trying to get the correct type lol... after a couple of tries they finally managed to get what they were looking for (even if it was a very small cup given with attitude, which tbh was probably deserved haha since they kept sending back the "wrong" vinegars LOL). So.. if you're also a vinegar connoisseur, I guess you should know that they have a couple of different types of vinegar?! Fwiw, I was happy with the one they provided at the table with ginger. You can also request fresh minced garlic (which we also did... our poor waiters must have hated us). The place is a bit of a trek but the dumplings were worth it. We were one of the early birds that arrived just after opening. The XLB are juicy but not piping hot which was odd since they don't open until 10:30 AM. The ginger should be julienne as thinly as possible. And they didn't seem to like it when you ask for more. I've never had Shanghainese food before so I have nothing to compare the food to, but the dumplings tasted great. I would highly recommend #1 on the menu to anyone. I've had black bean noodles before, but the ones from this restaurant tasted different (probably because Shanghainese). The taste wasn't what I was used to so I was thrown off by the taste at first, but it went well mixed with the spicy chili sauce. However, the black bean noodles by themselves without the spice tasted a bit odd for me. Taking one star off because I didn't like the black bean noodles very much and I wouldn't necessarily come back here again unless I'm in the area. We wanted to try something different so we went here for the first time. I'm glad we did! Generous portions. There were 4 of us and we were all hungry so we ordered a lot. Tried the pork soup dumplings, the pork and crab dumplings, pork dumplings with chili oil, twice cooked pork with leeks, a tofu dish, and fried fish fillet. All were really good but the twice cooked pork with leeks was one of my favorites. I liked the pork soup dumplings too. They are a good size and have plenty of soup in them.
