This is a very interesting place--it's like they are trying too hard to be unique with their decor and menu, but it falls flat. Outside, it gives a dive bar or country hangout spot. Indoors it is very campy, with glass trinkets and antiques everywhere. There is a cute room with a bar and different dining areas with cutesy, antiquey things all over. I'm giving my three stars because the hostess and waitress were lovely! They made sure we were happy and had what we needed. The food was okay, but not great as others have said. My grilled prawns were plain and I got their signature Dupuis potatoes which was more like hot potato salad with too much sour cream than scalloped potatoes. My hubby's smoked salmon pasta was very thick and heavy, but just not excellent. Our salads were okay but the carrots that they marinate with cinnamon were an odd addition. They taste like Big Red gum. We did opt for dessert, a berry cobbler. It wasn't too bad, but wasn't as warm as we like it. But it already had ice cream so no use sending it back. Our first time at Dupuis, but it won't be our last. We planned on going there for our 25th anniversary dinner. Everything was perfect. Dupuis has several areas that they can serve guests, and the servers seated folks so that you weren't crowded together. That small consideration was just the start of our excellent dining experience. We had the special, nut crusted halibut. Some 26 years ago we had nut crusted halibut on our first date, so it seemed right to have on our special occasion. Our server was attentive without being a bother, and timed serving the food perfectly. We had heard their lemon drop cocktails were delicious, so we tried them. They did not disappoint. Right on the side of US101 heading into Port Angeles is a wonderful eclectic dining experience with a unique selection of seafood, pasta and meat dishes to satisfy any craving, complemented with freshly baked honey rolls. We stopped here on our way to Olympic National park for the weekend. We were pleasantly surprised, it was really good. It is directly on the side of the road with not too many other places around. We had house margaritas, my husband had the seafood Alfredo and I had the breaded chicken breast plate. All of the food was delicious, no complaints there. The server was so nice and attentive. If you ever find yourself asking dupuis do? Or dupuis don't? Just don't. The first red flag that I ignored was that I am local, I have lived here my entire life and I don't know ANYONE that eats there. My partner and I have been wanting to try this place forever a while and decided to give it a go. On the way there I worried that we would regret it because we love eating at 929 Woodfire grill and Kokopelli grill.. we are regulars there and get lovely service and tasty food and now looking back that was foreshadowing. Our reservation was at 7 pm and we were sat around 6:55 pm, the hostess was great. We waited almost 10 minutes to be greeted by our server. Once the server came up to us we ordered our appetizer, entree's and added a cup of soup to share. Our entrees come with bread and a choice of soup or salad, we each got the blue cheese house salads. It took about 15 minutes to get our bread and we didn't have any little plates to eat them on which was odd but not the end of the world. We put the bread basket in the middle and ate our rolls quickly because we were so hungry. Our server was everywhere BUT checking on us. Finally my partner asked the hostess or the server about our salads, I can't remember who it was and she said they were coming. Our crab cakes came out before our salads which was also strange but at least we had something to eat. The crab cakes were actually pretty good and a decent size, I can't complain about that. Our salads and cup of soup finally came out and they were just okay. The tomato bisque tasted like the Safeway tomato bisque they had which is good but nothing to rave about. The salad was just your typical side salad but they had some sliced yellow squash and cauliflower in there, it was decent.. until I bit into the baby carrot! I looked at my partner and said "this carrot tasks like it was soaked in a cinnamon fall scented candle.. what the hell?!" I have NEVER tasted anything like that, especially in a salad. The hostess brought us a new basket of rolls, I assume because SHE actually noticed how long we have been there and was checking on us. The rolls were the Cheesecake Factory brown bread, which I'm not even made about because I like that. It was just strange. More time went on and a couple had sat down and got service relatively quickly and they had eaten their soups already.. I was anxiously looking in that direction hoping for our seafood pastas. By now it was past 8 pm and I'm starving.. I'm annoyed but as a woman that has been in the service industry, I want to be patient and understanding. Our server was not checking on us, no communication, no "I'm so sorry for the wait how are you doing??" Nothing. If this is a normal thing for that restaurant she could have started off with our table saying "good evening is this your first time dining with us? Well, let me tell you that everything is made to order and there will be a wait" or whatever their reasoning is but we knew nothing because our server gave us no updates. Just nothing. As a server a little communication goes a long way, and unfortunately it's a skill that not all servers possess. We finally decide that enough is enough and walk to the front to ask to if we can just pay for everything and leave without the dinner. (I was very bummed because the desert sounded so good and we were going to order two but we never even got our dinner.) Our server looked shocked, and got extremely defensive. We told her that we had been here for over an hour and we were just ready to call it a night. The woman said "I don't think waiting for your food is unreasonable and that is the standard in a place LIKE THIS" implying that it's just such a fine establishment.. as if we haven't been to ACTUAL fine dining places. My partner said "I'm not trying to argue or sound rude but we will pay for everything, we just want to leave now." The woman made a face and said "you know what? It's on us tonight have a great evening" in a snotty tone and my partner tried to offer to pay again and I finally just said "babe she doesn't give a shit, let's just go.. I'm over this" The entire experience was beyond irritating and it was entirely because of the lack of attention and communication from the server. If we would have stuck around for another hour, MAYBE we would have gotten our entrees and two deserts that we were going to get.. and maybe we would have been even more disappointed. The entire thing was just so strange and the red flags started immediately.. by the time we got back to Port Angeles, I was so over the restaurant experience that we got fast food and called it a night. Duped by Dupuis. How does this place have 5 star reviews?! HOW?! I really thought I knew what I was getting into when we made reservations here. A friend came to visit from out of town and we wanted to take her to somewhere different- my husband read somewhere on google that this place has vegetarian options so we thought it would be perfect, she doesn't eat meat. The reviews on our local fb group rave about this place. What a DISAPPOINTMENT! The food was not good. We had apps - Pickle Fries $13 and the Crab Cakes $21 for 3 small cakes. Both mediocre- both I make better at home. The only vegetarian options for my visitor were a side salad that came with rando veggies and.... Cinnamon carrots?! and the rolls served with dinner. We asked about a vegetarian option and got a snotty look. I've never been to a restaurant that charges what this place charges and not been able to get something from the kitchen for a vegetarian. Not even a vegetarian pasta dish! I was embarrassed having taken my friend here. I ordered the Steak Dupuis - Filet Mignon $63. Chewy- read that again.... CHEWY - like I chewed up the bite and had to spit out what was left- tasteless, cooked wrong - I truly don't believe it was actual filet mignon- and the burgundy crimini reduction was gross, strangely gelatinous- not a gelee- they say it's a reduction- it's as if it had been left out for days, frozen, thawed and reconstituted but left chunky and.... The sauce was fishy. The potatoes Dupuis that everyone raves about is this hot mess of a thick mayonnaise sauce and potato casserole - disgusting, heavy, flavorless and sure to cause an emergency bathroom situation. I took a small bite and stopped there, I couldn't eat any more. My husband had the pan fried chicken breast $22- this guy can eat anything- he ate half of it - forced it down- like a kid being forced to eat broccoli and as a consolation prize for all of us, he got sick in the car on the way home. He said It tasted like an old sour sponge - gravy was flavorless and fishy at the same time. The only thing palatable was the fried shrimp dish- but at $27 - there's way less expensive options in town. I also paid for two desserts- why- why did we think this was a good idea- we should have gotten McDonald's ice cream sundae's - it would have been better! The chocolate cake was.... Ick- my husband called it Little Debbie's with Hershey's syrup on top and the crème brûlée- was vanilla pudding- like out of a little snack pack pudding cup. It didn't just taste like it, it really was a pudding cup dumped onto the plate - I know that for sure because my daughter ordered the dessert and she used to eat those when she was a kid - she has a very discerning palate. We left 99% of the food on our plates and ordered extra dinner rolls to try to satiate our hunger and hopefully soak up the food borne illnesses we had just consumed. The decor inside this place is like 1950's great-great grandmother vibes mixed with dusty Midwest abandoned house, at Christmas time. it was the most pleasant part of the experience. The parking area was so muddy we could hardly get back to our car without slipping and there's no lighting. I was really hoping this went differently, but it didn't. It would have been a shame to come to town and not pay this restaurant a visit (or re-visit). This is the oldest restaurant on the peninsula and their interior decor is one-of-a-kind whimsical and charming. It has been renovated over the years but still maintains a nostalgic vibe with its wooden ceilings, glass decorations, and old-school curtains. Since we came in October, they already had a lot of fantastic halloween decorations adorning the entire restaurant. Just seeing how seriously they take halloween makes me wonder what amazing things they'll do for November and December. If I could describe the food here in one word it could be rich, in the best sense possible. Everything is made from scratch and so satisfying. We started off with their oyster chowder and it is the best of its kind that I've ever had. Go for the bowl (not cup), period. Their crab cakes were good too but it's hard to beat the chowder in the appetizer category. For our main courses, we had a pecan crusted salmon (special of the day), and seafood gnocchi. My personal preference is the seafood gnocchi- so creamy, buttery and will put you in a carb coma for the rest of the evening. After reading many excellent reviews about we couldn't wait to eat at this restaurant. We made a reservation for 7 and got there early. They seated us immediately with menus. After waiting about 10 minutes our waitress gave us water and asked what we would like to drink. We ordered and said we'd like to order some crab cakes that everyone was raving about. Another 15 minutes went by and finally got our drinks. Another 10-15 minutes went by and I flagged the server and asked her if our crab cakes were coming up soon. She looked at me confused and said well if you told me then I ordered them. Finally she asked us what we would like to order.I had a real bad feeling that the crab cakes were coming with dinner, (which they did). The menu said 3 cakes and only 2 were on the plate. The waitress apologized and said that they ran out and since we had to wait so long she wasn't going to charge us. They were horrible. Greasy, no crab and about a tablespoon of capers (!!??) and lukewarm. I had the Halibut and chips but substituted the fries for sweet potato mash. Mistake. I will say that they halibut was very good and hot. The sweet potato mash had way too much cinnamon and sweetener. My husband had the smoked salmon w/ penne pasta with mushrooms and a cream sauce Instead of serving a filet of salmon on top of the pasta, everything was mixed together. The salmon was in shreds and all mixed all together like a casserole. The smoked salmon was extremely smoky more than any smoked fish he's eaten in his entire life. It was a disgusting plate of "mess". He took several bites and just couldn't eat it. When he inquired why there wasn't larger pieces of fish, the server said thats the way we make it... She said, I wish you would have told me sooner that you didn't like it, as I could have gotten you something else to eat. When we got the bill she had removed that entre from the bill without us asking for it. Needless to say we were very disappointed that we drove 30 miles to eat there. I've been driving past DuPuis for 21 years during my daily commute between Port Angeles and Sequim, always intending to stop at this quirky little spot just off Highway 101, a few miles east of Port Angeles. Their hours have historically been a bit unpredictable, but they were open this past Saturday evening, so we made an early reservation for three before heading to a movie at Deer Park Cinema. Over the years, I'd heard mixed--but largely positive--things about the food, though recent Yelp reviews have been rough. Thankfully, our experience was excellent across the board. As many have noted, the ambiance is unique and inviting, with a warm, rustic charm. The service was superb, starting with the welcoming host who greeted us with a smile the moment we walked in, and continuing with our attentive and friendly waitress. Most importantly, the food was delicious. I ordered the Steak DuPuis--a petite filet wrapped in bacon. I was initially wary of the bacon, but it was subtle and executed beautifully. The steak was cooked perfectly, the cut was high-quality, and the flavor did not disappoint. For sides, I chose the whipped yams, which were absolutely delicious. My starter, a tomato bisque, was one of the best I've ever had, and the salad, featuring a nice mix of fresh greens, was also very good. My wife and daughter both ordered the pasta with tenderloin tips and enjoyed every bite. The dessert selection looked incredible, but we passed this time to catch our movie. I won't skip dessert on my next visit! For drinks, my wife ordered a brandy sidecar, which she described as "maybe the best she's ever had," while I had a bourbon old fashioned. It was a bit sweeter than I prefer, but I still thoroughly enjoyed it. Their wine and beer selection also looked respectable, and I'm already planning to spend some time in their amazing-looking bar during my next visit. I'm honestly puzzled by some of the recent low reviews. I dine out frequently, both locally and beyond, and based on our experience in January 2025, I highly recommend DuPuis. If you're a foodie from Seattle, is this The Metropolitan Grill or El Gaucho? WHAT THE HECK IS THIS PLACE? It seems like the owner just spent all their money on Knick Knacks and then remembered they had to get food so they just stuck with old caned food. The waiters where very nice to us however, but that doesn't stop the fact that the chicken tasted like a coconut, (there wasn't any coconut in the recipe) the cake was dry, the salad had no flavor, somethings in the food where oddly sweet which ruined the dinner, and there was too much random old smelly ingredients in the food to the point everything smelled fishy and one of us couldn't even start eating. I really wanted to like this place but something was off the evening we went. I think they had a shortage of staff or maybe illness. The service was hit and miss. Our server forgot I had ordered another glass of wine and it did not arrive for what seemed like twenty minutes. Also, although I have no problems with slow food movement, we were there for over two hours with long delays in the arrival of the food. We were with friends who had recommended the place and they said this was an aberration. We went there to celebrate a birthday. Be aware the food is very rich. We ordered an appetizer and then an entree and dessert and it was all a bit too much. On the positive side, the ambience of the place is excellent with the fireplace and the lighting. Like a trip back into time, food was excellent. Had a pickle fries and steak which came with Dupuis' famous baked cheese backed potatoes. For dessert we shared a bread pudding. Very nostalgic from white linen table cloths to the faint music of the 40's-50's. This is the oldest restaurant on the peninsula dating back to 1920. Truly wonderful find. This place is delicious! The ambiance is great and it is one of the oldest restaurants on the peninsula so building is super old and cool but very well maintained. Crab cakes with sauce are so yummy. Husband got halibut special and I got seafood pasta. Both slightly under seasoned but very good other than that . Just added some salt and it was perfect. The rolls are homemade and that honey butter is . Don't forget that yummy just the right amount of sweetness bread pudding! If you're a big city food snob like me, then you'll want to steer clear of this place. The food is abysmal. We started with crab cakes, which I had high hopes for since the restaurant is so close to Dungeness, but they were nothing to write home about. The crab was drowned out by breading and the sweet sauce was unnecessary. After that the meal took a dive off a cliff. Salads were unimaginative, as if someone had thrown whatever veggies they had left in their fridge onto a bed of lettuce. Then suddenly you're chewing on a piece of Big Red gum, no wait, that's a bizarre sweet cinnamon carrot hiding in the ruffage. We had steak and the seafood gnocchi. The steak was cooked as ordered, but yet again, another unnecessary sweet sauce that looked like jelly. The seafood gnocchi was dreadful. Way too much cream sauce, stale tasting gnocchi, 3 pieces of shrimp, and a small pile of fishy smelling and tasting crab in the middle. I was afraid I would get food poisoning, so I skipped eating the crab, which left me very little protein and very little satiation. Why we kept going, I know not. Maybe we hoped the dessert would redeem the meal. Chocolate cake was sad and dry. Strawberry cheesecake which boasted "strawberries galore" had no strawberries, but was made with strawberry cream cheese. Both desserts had dollops of canned whipped cream.
