Let me start by saying this place has a lot of potential. However, the service wasn't great. The person working the register was quiet, didn't do a great job recommending food and generally gave the vibe that I was an inconvenience being there. When another customer asked for a couple plates for their pizza, the person working the counter pointed to where they were being stored, a few feet away from him. Really? You couldn't be bothered to grab a plate and bring it to him? When I got my food (a calzone), it was decent. Big portions, for not a lot of money. However, when I bit into my food, it was cold in spots. The cheese wasn't melted in the middle. It was like biting into something great, only to be let down halfway through and regret your decision. My family and I have pizza quite often. Durkin's is a little different than most pizza joints. It just tastes different, in a great way. I've only picked up pizza to go, so we haven't actually dined in. Their decor is pretty awesome if you're a rock fan. Lots of really cool things hanging on the wall. Today was the first time I ordered online while at work so I could pick up on the way home. Ordering online was very easy to do and I was thankful because I was in a rush. On the way to the restaurant, I got an email that said my order had been adjusted. I looked closer and they took $4 off. Not sure why, but I didn't question it! I arrived 15-20 min later and my pizza was ready. The employee I spoke with was extremely nice and helpful. Love this place! They also serve alcohol and have TVs so it has a pretty cool vibe. Solid family pizza joint. If you need cheap, quick, and somewhere to bring the chitlins to, this is an excellent neighborhood stop. If you're looking for the most amazing pizza and italian food you've ever eaten, this isn't that, but it's a solid comfort meal. Pizza is simple and will please the small picky eaters. It's a step up from Pizza Hut or Dominoes. If we are doing take-out, we will usually do Jets, but if we want to sit down and eat together, Durkin's is a good choice for the area. This is the kind of place that you'd bring a baseball team to, after a game, if that puts it into perspective. Order at the counter and they bring the food to your table, refill your own drinks kind of place. A little small but we haven't been in when it has been crowded. We see this place as sort of...where you go on a Friday when you don't want to fight crowds elsewhere. We like the people that work here, always very friendly and down to earth. The product is delicious, the prices are cheap (especially on Sunday), and there are two LCD TVs for your viewing pleasure. With that being said, we were not disappointed one bit. In fact, the actual experience may have exceeded what I personally was expecting. Usually, the medium cheese pizzas are $10 plus $1 for any additional toppings. But as fate would have it, the mediums are discounted to $7 on Sundays. With a total of 4 guys with pretty large appetites, we ordered 3 mediums with 2 toppings on each, and the famous cheese bread. The pizzas came out bursting with tons of flavor, the cheese was still bubbling and melted perfectly, and if you like your crust to be a little doughy and drenched with garlic butter, then this place is the place for you. The cheese bread came out with marinara sauce and they were really lax on giving us extra ranch as well. When my friend grabbed the first piece of cheese bread, the cheese extended out to a couple feet from the table (that's how much cheese there was!) Altogether, we even had about a full pizza left over. It's one of the only pizza places where I don't have to ask for extra sauce! Unfortunately I wasn't a fan. :( My lasagna tasted like instant noodles that had been baked dry. It was dry and crunchy and the edges were extra dry and burned to a hard crunch. I must admit that I'm suspicious of any pizza place with a 4.5 star average. After all, my entire Yelp existence owes itself to a place called ROSARIOS in Carson, California which boasted a 5-star average and was one of the most miserable pizza experiences of my life. So when my family was looking at homes in the Richwoods area, I did a quick Yelp and found Durkin's nearby with its 'Gold Standard' of reviews (100+ Reviews of 4.5 star average) and BOOM, it was on. We walked in and found the place clean. And empty. Devoid of customers. And employees. There was a guy in the back unloading a truck, but no one in the kitchen. Or behind the cashier counter. An inauspicious debut to be sure. I snapped a few pics and posted them up with captions like 'Anyone home?' and waited. And waited. Finally, some indifferent college-aged dude appears and I tell him we've been hanging out for ten minutes. He doesn't seem to GAF. I ordered a small pepperoni pizza, a personal meat-lover's pizza and an order of cheesy bread. The cheesy bread was a huge hit with my son and it was so good, I wound up sharing it with him. The pizzas were just okay. Yes, they're a good deal, especially for lunch and if you're hungry. But the sauce is a bit on the spicy side and the crust is very thick -- great if you love that sort of thing or come from Chicago -- but not to our New York pizza tastes. I'm not gonna dog the place because it certainly wasn't terrible and we generally like thin-crust pizza, but between the inept service and our mixed emotions on the food, three stars seems pretty forgiving. Durkin's Pizza is the only pizza place I will go to in McKinney. The pizza, service and atmosphere are top notch. I always order the ground beef and mushroom pizza. It tastes so good I have to check myself or else I'll eat the entire pie. My wife and daughter like their pizza Hawaiian style (Canadian bacon and pineapple). Their pepperoni pizza is the only pepperoni pizza I've liked in years. They don't get the cheap stuff that shrivels up and gets all gummy as the pizza cools. The crust is not so thick that it will fill you up on the first slice and thin enough that my east coast friends can fold their pizza in half (you know who you are) Service is simple and with a smile. Come in and order, get your number and have a seat. Two flat screens that are on the sports channels await you. The owner is usually there and is a really cool dude. Durkins pizza has a rock n roll theme. From what I understand its a southern thing. But this place has The Beatles, Jimmy Hendricks and Janis Joplin in poster and music. There's something to be said for locally owned restaurants with really fresh and delicious ingredients. Durkin's Pizza is all that and more. I was skeptical how I would like the thicker crust that I had heard about on Yelp, but let me tell you, it's almost like garlic bread. Brushed with butter and sprinkled with parsley, it's perfectly crispy on the outside and chewy on the inside. The flavor dimension on this crust kind of blew my mind. I ordered spinach and mushrooms to top the pie off. This was a fine choice seeing as how both the spinach and mushrooms were incredibly fresh. We all know there's nothing worse than canned mushrooms on a pizza. Not only was the pizza damn good, but the owner was ever-present. He was working front of house and talking with all of the guests, even cleaning off tables. I am still so impressed by this. The boyfriend and I have been a few times and Mr. Durkin has always made time to have a conversation with us. It makes the customer feel special and lets me know that my money is supporting a fantastic restaurant. All too often I feel as if I'm a burden to other establishments, but Durkin's can make you feel at home. I can't forget to note that the owner plays ridiculously good music. REAL rock and roll. I think if I were to have I again (and I would) I'd keep it simple and get it with extra pepperoni and 1-2 other items. That type of crust/dough always pairs well with a few hearty tasting proteins...just my opinion. The sauce is pretty simple which isn't a bad thing, I personally prefer just a little more kick/acidic flavor/texture. One observation was that the pizza came out really quick. That may have contributed to the sauce not getting under the heat as long as it should have. This may sound weird but it does make a difference. The sauce was warm to the touch. Everything from their grilled chicken Caesar salad to their spaghetti and meatballs are fresh! I was starving so I ordered a small cheese pizza and a large grilled chicken salad! I also ordered a Peroni! Great bottled beer selection. Fountain soda drinks also allow kids to refill their drinks on their own without relying on staff to refill glasses. You order at the counter and then choose your table. They are fast and super helpful, from the minute you place your order until you get your leftovers boxed up and head for the parking lot. They take their pizza seriously here. The crust looks huge but it is crisp and chewy with an olive oil and garlic glaze that makes it just perfect. If you like thick fluffy crust this is the place for you. The actual pizza part is very thin New York esque but their is overabundance of crust. If it had a garlic or flavored sauce on the crust it'd be better. My favorite kind of pizza is Detroit style deep dish. Since they don't offer deep dish I wouldn't be as likely to come back here. We ordered their Sunday special last night (14" cheese for $7.99 * $1 for ea topping). I've never enjoyed eating the crust of the pizza so much - it was soft and billowy at the perimeter and thin throughout the rest of the slice. The seasonings and toppings are well applied (not overloaded) and the pie is not drenched in butter. Use your napkins to clean your face, not to clean up grease deposits on top of your food. read more
