I got the half chicken half beef combo and I'm sad to say it was the worst teriyaki I've ever had. It was so dry, the meat quality of the beef was mediocre, and the salad was warm and wilted from sitting next to the rice and meat. They make you pay extra for additional sauce which I would recommend since they don't apply any to your serving. I used to love Du's I would defend them from anyone who tried to say they weren't the best but unfortunately they are the worst now. I asked to sample all their meat and found beef a bit dry and tough. So, I went with a 2 meat combo platter with pork and chicken. Their teriyaki sauce is very similar to korean bbq sauce, and I wouldn't be that far off to say it is korean bbq sauce. However, that's not bad thing, korean bbq is delicious afterall! In a way, their teriyaki combo takeout is like a korean bbq bento box. The pork had good char with strong teriyaki flavor due to thinner slices of meat. But, some of the slices were burnt and the teriyaki flavor was too strong and salty to be eaten by itself. However, when paired with the rice, the saltiness and the flavor balanced out quite nicely. And the salad with creamy mayo based dressing was a nice palate cleanser and contrast to the umami of the meat. Chicken was very juicy and tender. And due to thicker slices of the meat and the musculature of the chicken, the teriyaki flavor didn't overpower the flavor of the meat, rather it complemented it. I have been going to this place since I was elementary school. You can smell the barbecue from a black away. It is what you expect: hot grilled meat, heaping rice portion, and a salad. Love their poppyseed salad dressing! I usually ask for the teriyaki sauce on the side instead of on the meat and dip as a I go to prevent it from being too salty, and the staff is very accommodating! (I can't believe I haven't yelped it) the portions are good enough for two or for two meals, but if you are super hungry, it will fill you up. We order the teriyaki chicken with rice and it has become more and more dry with less and less sauce. Tonight we got it with no sauce in it at all. The sauce that they sell we bought, but it's not the same. The taste is wrong and it has a granular feel on your tongue. I bought some to bring with me to school because I love it so much. They sell rice as well as noodles as the base. There are a variety of entree options including chicken, beef, and pork teriyaki. Ordered the tofu bowl. It was most certainly undeniably forgettable. It consists of tofu , carrots , broccoli and onions. Not much vegetables at all you"ll see in the photos. The tofu didnt taste like tofu; i believe it was tofu skin. The sauce was plain absolutely no flavour. If you want spice your only option is saracha. Steep price $8.75 what should have cost about $6 it may have helped if their was some self serve condiments to make it more paliatible. I see lots of people coming and going from here while i was there. I suppose if i liked chicken or meat i might have rated higher. I like teriyaki, as in I really like it. That said, I just discovered Du's a few months ago. Probably because it is across town from me. Still I had heard of it, and I noticed it one day as I was driving past hungry. It was as good as I had heard. It is really a basic place. Just to look at it it seems a bit run down. No decorations, old formica tables for which you are likely to wait a bit for as there aren't many for the long line (luckily most people seem to get it to go.) That first visit was good, It was lunch time and it was so busy that one lady did little besides cut up chicken. The pop machine was broken and I waited for a table. But then the food came. A scoop of rice, some of the cheapest precut looking lettuce with a good house made dressing and a big pile of chicken. It was really good, It was even better when I poured extra sauce on it. The chicken had a nice char to it. I just knew I would be back. My last visit to Du's was just as good, I stopped by with friend, the line was just out the door but only took a few minutes to be to the front. We were lucky a big bunch of firemen were just behind us. My friend was as impressed by the food as me, maybe more, she loved the salad. Ok some random notes and thoughts: Its all about the meat here, Beef, pork, but especially the chicken, though I think they do have tofu on the menu. I never see anyone eating anything but chicken though. Its all about the meat here, The place is a dive, service is nice enough but minimal, they take your order, make change and call you when its ready, period. What the Du's? How the hell have I lived in Ptown for this many years, longed for a halfway decent teriyaki place for as many years, and only today made it into Du's?! I've been missing OUT! Du's is about as zero-frills as you can get. The menu offers no variety (although they do have tofu now). Basically, you can have chicken, beef, or pork teriyaki, or you can have Yaki. The tofu dish doesn't look exciting, and noodles are a side-show at a restaurant obviously centered on the grill. Oh, and they offer kimchi (HA! I knew it was Koreans running the joint... the side of kimchi is always a tell). Upon inquiry, it turns out that grandma, who used to make the kimchi, is no longer in a condition to do so, and the kimchi is now store-bought (they say it's still good, but I have kimchi in my fridge, so I ain't paying $2.5 for a side of it). The space is tiny and janky. A few tables for dining in, but the majority of business seemed to be take out. The counter is so frenetic with fast paced meal-slinging and break-neck order taking that I am not sure I would want to try to enjoy a meal in that atmosphere unless I had nowhere else to go. I think take out is the way to go. You get: classic cheap ass iceberg salad with some sort of poppy-seed dressing, a scoop of white rice, and a heaping pile grilled meat. This comes with a couple of little containers of a thick, not-too-sweet garlic ginger teriyaki sauce. Mine cost $7.90. I opted for the chicken (everyone else was ordering it, so I assumed it was the best) and beef combo. I'm so glad I got the combo. The chicken was good, but I think it was breast meat. Thigh meat is so much more juicy and delicious, and while the flavor and char-level on these breasts were good, it had that signature dryness that comes with ALL chicken breasts. No matter how hard you try to make white meat tender and juicy, it just ain't dark meat to me. Still, that's just a personal thing with the type of meat. I can't ding Du's on that, because I know the majority of people prefer breasts. The beef. OMG. The beef had an AMAZING flavor. Thinly sliced, somewhat fatty, but coated in a fantastic garlic/ginger teriyaki flavor. It blew me away. I simply never have good teriyaki in this town, especially of the beef variety. So good. The salad was standard. Decent, but lacking in much of any food value. Just iceberg, a few carrot shreds and dressing. The rice? White. When will people catch on to the brown rice thing? Not soon enough, I guess. All in all, I powered the majority of the meal. I could have eaten the whole thing, but I would have been left in a food coma. I left some chicken meat and rice for later. The beef? Demolished. Gone. In my belly. YUM. This is downright the best beef teriyaki I've had in Portland. I will return to try the pork, but I'll have to get the pork/beef combo for sure. If I'm gonna drive up to 52nd and Sandy, I'm not going to forego that deliciousness. read more

It was bustling busy when I came to pick up some take-out chicken and pork teriyaki this week. Note: t here is a dining room with several tables. Despite the noontime crush, my order came out quickly. I thought it was cool that the Asian guy manning the counter was calling the orders back in Spanish to the Mexican cooks in the kitchen. Like I said earlier, the dressing on the tossed salad was amazing. It actually made a good dipping sauce for the meat, which had been marinated in some delicious seasonings. So yes, the chicken and pork tasted excellent (the pork reminded me of jerky). But the chicken was just a tad dry and burned around the edges. read more

When I was pregnant, I ate a lot of Du's. It' was one of the few things my body was happy with. My husband used to go pick it up for us on a more than weekly basis. We ate a lot of Du's chicken during that period. As a result, my daughter is addicted to teriyaki sauce. I'm not kidding. She wants to drink it. Like milk. I'm concerned for her well being... anyway. Du's has tasty smoky grilled teriyaki chicken. It's perfect, really. The rice is okay. Not perfect, but not bad. The salad that comes with the chicken is iceberg, as noted by others, with a poppyseed dressing. It's not special. But it does complement the chicken nicely for some reason. If you get your food to go you can request the salad separately and that helps prevent the limp warm lettuce thing. We've eaten teriyaki pork and yakisoba... we always go back to the chicken. It's the gold standard there. Don't bother with the other stuff. Du's is always full of police officers, that's how I knew it was good when I first discovered it ten years back. It's tiny, it's parking lot is hellacious, but... it's tasty goodness. I had some recently and it still has the same effect. I like it. And I'm not even pregnant. If you go, park on the street. I normally walk in the door and just say "chicken and pork" without glancing at the menu. Don't just roll in and yell your order, expect a line if you go during lunch or dinner hours but they are super efficient and fast at getting the orders out. Recently had the beef teriyaki lunch combo, after hearing about Du's for years. Came with rice and salad; beef was fresh, had some nice char taste, and was super flavorful. Hit it with some Sriracha, grab a bit of rice, and you have a tasty bite! The salad was good, dressing was tasty, but my dish was literally swimming in salad dressing. They must have put AT LEAST 1/4 CUP of dressing. The first few bites were good, but by the time I got home it was all just mush mush swimming in sweet mayo poppy seed dressing. Tip: Ask for dressing on side, and then I think everything will be gravy. Not as good I was expecting overall. I'm used to my Hawai'i style teri plates. I've had Du's bookmarked for a long time and we finally stopped by 40 min before closing. Their parking section is limited and tight. I think there was three angled spots and of course I entered it from NE Sandy which is the wrong direction for accessibility. Oh well, I got us parked and we walked in. First thing we see and smell is chargrilled meat grilling behind the counter. The smell of it isn't overwhelming like it is at Joy Teriyaki. Guy at the counter greeted us quickly and asked for our order. We got the feeling there's no time for dillydallying, just order, pay, and sit down. Don't peruse the menu. We knew what we liked, from having eaten at other teriyaki joints, so we ordered, paid and sat down. The portions are enormous. I don't know if it's the same for to go orders but hopefully it is. We ordered a teri-chicken and veggie yakisoba but enjoyed the teri-chicken more. I would've preferred the yakisoba contain more veggies after having stirred it to reveal a family portion of noodles. Whether that's their norm or having arrived less than an hour before closing they ran out, but I won't let that stop me from giving Du's another try at it. The chicken was grilled perfectly and having the teriyaki sauce at the table so we could douse our food as much as we wanted was also perfect. What we didn't find perfect was the salad dressing. I know, I know! What am I thinking but we both agreed our favorite salad dressing is still from Soy Grill. It's a poppyseed dressing too but with less garlic and more sweetness. Anyway, the salad dressing doesn't affect our decision to dislike Du's or to never visit again. The entrees tasted great and the staff who prepared them worked their butts off. Not super friendly service, but I go to Du's for teriyaki, not friendship. The food is good, but fairly inconsistent. Sometimes the meat is too charred. Also, sometimes the beef takes on a sort of natural gas flavor from the grill. That said, the beef is still my favorite. The salad that comes with the order is a typical, nutritionally useless, iceberg lettuce salad topped with a unique dressing. Some people love the dressing, but I always get it on the side. Wow... Very tasty food. I would normally not go to a place like this. Its looks a bit grungy in side. it has the faded pics of the food they offer above the entrance to the kitchen. I also think it has been about 20 years since I have had Teriyaki. But my wife had read how good it was and it was her turn to pick. The place defines non-pretentiousness. The menu is ultra simple offering chicken, pork, chicken and pork, beef and other combos of grilled teriyaki. I think there is a noodle dish as well. They come with a oddly shaped scoop of rice and a salad of iceberg lettuce and a dressing that tasted like a thin mix of mayonaise with poppy seeds. There was one very busy but ver friendly guy at the counter who greeted everyone who came. He also seemed to know the names of most of the people who came in.... and there was a line there the whole time. About 3' behind him was a trio of cooks who were grilling and chopping. If you eat there you will hear the chopping about once a minute. So why the 5 starts. Well for one its an iconic and totally real local place. I like that. And then there is the food. Yes..... OMG. My wife had the chicken teriyaki and I had the chick and pork. The chick was done perfectly. Juicy on the inside and bits of crunchy on the out side. The pork had that nice sweet barbeque taste. The rice was done well. I put more teriyaki and hot sauce on mine. And then, because it was so good, we started to inhale the food. Oh.... the salad, we made fun of it and then proceed to eat most of it as well. The serving size was huge. We have some saved for lunch today. I been going to Du's grill for the past 2 1/2 years and hands down I've never enjoyed any other teriyaki besides Du's. The line at the restaurant are usually so packed, but the food doesn't take much time to be prepared thanks to all the wonderful cooks. There isn't much to choose from the menu, so I usually stick to the chicken teriyaki w/ rice. The customer service there is also out of this world.
