Dear Dutton Plumbing, There is handy tool available these days called Google. So when you tell me what the problem is with my toilet, I can Google it and see what the going rate is for a repair of that problem, even while your technician is trying to sell me. When Google tells me that the high end of a repair like mine in an expensive urban area is $200 and you are telling me it's $600, I can tell you to leave. Even though I was willing to pay a premium for a quick painless repair, I am NOT willing to pay three times the going rate. Thank you to the Dutton reviewer who recommended Simi Valley Plumbing. Wow do they have awful customer service. I called Friday early morning to schedule service. Normal unclog of a bath tub, nothing too serious. They told me they'll call me back with an ETA. No problem. They call back a few hours later and say that the technician is at their current job and when they're done they'll call to schedule a time. Fine. Another couple hours later they call back to tell me that again the service technician is at a current job and they'll call later with an ETA. At this point since several hours have passed I asked to schedule a time for Monday because I'm going to be out the rest of the afternoon. They said they can't schedule a time, but they'll call on Monday morning with an ETA. Fast forward to today (Monday) they call at 8:05 am to again tell me that service technicians are out and will call with an ETA when they are done with their current jobs. At 10:45 (almost 3 hours later) I haven't heard from them, so I called and said I need an ETA. I sat on hold for a bit and then they connected me to dispatch, who again reiterated that that their technician is out and will call me later. I explained that I heard that all day Friday and now going on 3 hours today. I asked if there was just 1 technician or how is it that no one can give me time window. He said that they have about 20 of them and they are all out on their first morning job. So to get this straight, there are 20 technicians that couldn't bother to call all day Friday, and then I couldn't even make me the first round of calls on Monday after making me wait all day for a call back Friday? I specifically said I needed a morning call time as I work in the afternoon. I told them to cancel it. It took me 2 minutes to find another local plumbing company with excellent reviews that will do it for the same price and was able to give me an ETA right away. Please don't waste your time on Dutton. They don't value it and apparently don't need your money. read more

This is *NOT* the plumber I would send to my mom's house and here is why. Long story short, slow drip leak discovered in water supply line directly above 8 foot living room ceiling. Dutton comes out and estimates $978 to repair. That is $978 for about $20 in parts (high end) and 1 hour of labor if moving at a decent pace. I inquired about steep price, basically had to challenge the gouge. Technician said if I cut drywall hole larger for him to access that would knock price down to $578. I used a box cutter and opened hole another 12" in less than 5 minutes (so that would have been $400 for 5 min of his time). With the pipe actively dripping I was stuck paying $578 which was 200-300% too much. Imagine if I sent Dutton to my mom's house...she would have paid $978. I called customer service to complain about the original $978. I was told it was a mistake. The technician punched the job into iPad and the $978 should not have been the cost. I'll let you make your mind up on that. Upside to Dutton which brought them from 1 star to 2 stars was the quality of work was good and technician was professional. If cost is no issue to you and you are comfortable paying double, triple, maybe quadruple then you may be good with Dutton Plumbing. Lastly, I didn't notice this when I peeked at Dutton Yelp review before calling. Take a look at the nearly 300 reviews that are not recommended. I gave them a good rating a while ago when it came to my water heater being replaced but I have a toilet and shower back up in my home and I was told someone would come by 3 days ago. I was on stand by for several days. Now there is a smell coming up from my kitchen sink. They do not consider this to be an emergency and said they will not be able to come out until Monday. I put a call in on monday or tuesday. Now I have to wait a whole week...needless to say i am not very happy for this poor service. read more

I had a fairly easy request. There is a charge for the estimate - not applied to the work if completed, of $89, which I agreed to. The bid was for $1550. The plumber admitted it would take an hour. So $1550 for an hour. This was a simple job of cutting out a valve and reconnecting the pipes. Easy access. I already had a bid from a plumber to do the job for $300 - but it would be a day later. I was prepared to pay more. I would have paid $500 to get it done a day early. This company seems like they want to take advantage of people in bad times. Would not recommend them. The one thing companies should realize is the long-term cost of bad tactics. If they were fair, I would have used them for future work - My Tankless system is 14 years old. A replacement is imminent. When it is time to purchase and replace, I won't be using Dutton Plumbing. read more

Expensive and Horrible customer service. Scheduled for 9 am came at 2:45. Spent 20 minutes repairing a leaky pipe (drywall already cut out and pipes exposed). They wanted to charge $450!!! My husband said no way and the bill was miraculously reduced to $204 (still more than necessary!). NEVER calling them again! Stay away from service providers who use these tactics!!! read more

Had a difficult emergency leak on a tricky solar water heating system and Dutton was able to save the day. The techs Michael Tipton and David Walker were fantastic. Prompt, professional, great work. As with other reviews, we would give them a ZERO star if we could. In December 2020, we had a small pinhole leak from the main line in the garage spraying onto the rafters. Thinking Dutton Plumbing was here before we called them. It turned out that the one associate convinced us that our pipes were deteriorating since he could not weld joints together. He called the sales manager to talk to us about having the whole house re-plumbed because the rest of our plumbing will eventually deteriorate resulting in more leaks and damage throughout the house. After hours of explaining and convincing that our 50+ year old house needs new pipes, and how expensive it is with labor and all, we paid $31,000 (and they said we got returning customer discount!!??) Two months later, it was apparent we had a leak coming into our bathrooms. Looking closer there was beginning of mold/ mildew around our tub and two showers along with compromised wet vinyl floors. We called Dutton and two other of their associates verified a nice size leak in the attic, dripping down the common shower wall of both bathrooms, caused by their negligence. They said the office will be in touch to discuss the repairs. We waited THREE weeks, NO calls. We called them whereas the manager brusquely referred us to contact our home insurance (which they already contacted theirs). They did NOT even bother to tell us this before. A leak detector agency, sent by our home insurance, confirmed the leakage is from their negligence. He told us the copper pipes were left in the attic and he saw no deterioration. I doubt Dutton sent any documents to the city for inspection, since we never had anyone from our city come and inspect their work (we could have prevented all this!) We ended up acquiring major damage (we had abatement people come to remove what little asbestos we had in the wall and floors, then restoration people come to rebuild, restore and paint the wall(s) and restore the floors) and reconstruction on our two bathrooms, lasting 3 months. In the meantime, we have met and spoke to other contractors where they were shocked to hear Dutton charged us so much money for the re-plumbing. They said we should have paid half that (IF it was necessary at all!) One plumber we talked to worked for Dutton, but left since he did not want any part of price gouging customers We want to do our part to stop Dutton from scamming, practicing illegal price gouging, and taking advantage of seniors. What upsets us is that Dutton did not even "man up" to their mistakes and at least attempt to remedy the problem! Management and owners apparently don't have a conscious. Even though our insurance paid for most of the repairs, equaling $10,000,(except for the cost of the leak repair), this should not have happened. By the way, our main line from the street to our house also sprung a leak, (draining onto our neighbors' driveway), on the same day the other Dutton associates came to confirm the bathroom leak. Dutton office brushed it off saying it will cost between $7,000 to $10,000 to repair! Unfortunately, that is probably when we realized how crooked Dutton is. We found another contractor who only charged us $1,000 to replace and repair the line. We have now decided to send stacks of documents to Contractors State License Board to file a complaint and in hopes they get penalized. read more

I had a really great experience with Dutton. So, Kevin is the person that I am used to dealing with and he is so nice. A while ago I used them to fix the hot water and they did. I also asked them to install the gas shut off and they did a great job. This time Kevin came to check the small leak we had under the kitchen sink, he said to try and seal it and if it doesn't work we can get heavy duty pipes that wouldn't shake as much when we turn on the disposal. The check up we not well and Kevin said there was no charge after spending so much time examining every bathroom as well. They left and I felt great that they went to all this trouble and helped me out. I will continue to recommend them to my neighbors. read more

I normally always read reviews, but failed to do so in this circumstance. I had an emergency with my sink. Called Dutton over the weekend, they came out within 48 hours, which for a Plumber is pretty decent. They fixed the sink, which was great. While the Plumber was here at my home, I asked him to service the water heater by draining the water heater. Which is a relatively simple routine maintenance which involves draining the water and letting it refill. I took a hot shower prior to the service call. Sometime during the draining process, I asked the tech for a quote on a Tankless system, which I was interested in. For some inexplicable and unexplainable reason, my Water Hater "Broke" and an obscure expensive part ($1300 estimate) was now needed to fix it. I found that rather odd, given the age of the water heater. The technician said, "Well, it's an old heater and parts wear down." To which, I found rather confusing because he allegedly was a plumber for 17 years. Water Heaters are generally warrantee for about 12 years. I told him the WH had a warrantee for another few years, because it was only barely 8 years old. I believe in coincidences, but to have a Water Heater work prior to a Service and then all of a sudden fail during the service. That's a fairly implausible scenario in my mind. The Tech said, "since you were interested in a new system we could get that going otherwise we have to wait 7 days for a new part." This all seemed rather fishy to me. So, I told the tech to order the part and we'll wait without warm water until the part arrives, as it was under warrantee. When the Tech left, I called my old plumber, which I should have done to begin with. He came over to the house, as the Dutton Tech left the gas line open with no pilot light on, which meant it was spewing gas into my garage. My old plumber came to my home and looked over the Water Heater with a confused look. He pressed two buttons to do a hard reset and asked me to turn my hot water on. To my surprise, I had hot water and the Water Heater magically unbroke itself. Now, I'm not suggesting in any way that Dutton was trying to take advantage of my ignorance of Water Heaters. What I am saying is that for some reason they had a 17 year tech who couldn't press two buttons and re-ignite my perfectly unbroken pilot for my water heater. I'm unsure how that makes sense. Now, the experience wasn't all bad. They showed up on time, and he was professional and polite. He walked me through the scope of work for what I needed and provided a quote, which was rather expensive for the work involved. The tech was reliable and was informative. BE AWARE!!! CRIMINALS!! We called them to come out to check into a clog in the washing machine drain line, they told us that our pipes were collapsing under the house and rusting causing the back up. They went under the house and took photo's of an area that was not even connected to the laundry room. And we had already replaced that area four years ago. They said there was 40' of cast iron pipe that needed to be replaced, it would take three guys 8 hrs for the job. There would be a small charge of $10,000. this pipe area was not even attached. We called for a second estimate and we were told that everything looked good under the house. When they moved the washing machine out they found a small clog in the trap, fixed in 15 minutes. I had a simple leaking faucet like most people do so I called Dutton Plumbing in Santa Clarita. When the service tech arrived, I explained the problem and symptoms of the leak and showed him that when I applied light downward pressure to the hot water handle, the drip would stop. This guy, without ever looking under the sink or taking the water handle off to inspect the fixture told me that my entire faucet fixture would have to be rebuilt and replace the shut off valves under the sink or only replace the valves. Without inspecting the valves or the faucet itself, he gave a quote for $515 for replacing the valves and $795 for rebuilding the faucet and replacing the valves, both of which I declined as the cost seemed unusually high. I emailed the company that manufactured the faucet and provided the exact same description of the problem via email that I gave Dutton Plumbing's service tech in person. The faucet manufacturer replied back suggesting that I replace the seats and springs under the faucet handle and provided me with the part number. I purchased a two pack of the part for $4.98 and a tube of silicone grease for $4.00 at Home Depot and installed them myself in 10 minutes, resulting in the leak being fixed. Dutton Plumbing not only misdiagnosed how to fix the leak, they suggested work that did not EVEN need to be done at the cost of nearly $800. They do this stuff for a living, so how could they not EVEN suggest replacing the seats and springs? But instead, he told me that I need to replace my entire faucet fixture and valve handles. I don't like being cheated and that is exactly what this place tried to do to me. DO NOT let them do any work until you get a second opinion and estimate. They wanted to charge me $800 for work that did not need to be done AT ALL and I ended up fixing the leak myself and it literally cost me LESS THAN the price of a movie ticket. Read the Yelp reviews and you'll see a pattern of them trying to overcharge people. I spoke to someone at the Dutton after they saw my review and he tried to make up excuse, saying that they might suggest repairs that are "more comprehensive." There's a big difference between "more comprehensive" and repairs that are not required AT ALL. Crooks! read more

Service has remained an utter joke. I called Friday to confirm appointment time for Saturday was told 10:30am. Then I was called at 8am Saturfay morning letting me know I was second service. Seemed to me that 10:30 would have been correct. Then I get a call to say tech is running late and would be here 1-3. Then at 2:30 another call saying 4:30. That means I've wasted the entire day waiting on a tech. This will be the 3rd time out for the same repair. I would have thought a company as well known as Dutton would take better pride in their work and make sure repairs, especially repairs to fix the same problem were better met. I've spent a lot of money and wasted time waiting on Dutton. On the final call at 2:30, I was told the tech who was scheduled at 10:30 ended up doing extra work on the first call. How does that happen? Why wouldn't Dutton finish scheduled appointments for the day and schedule the added repairs for another time? How could they leave so many customers hanging? How many customers were scheduled after my 10:30 appointment were left with no repair for the day? Just ridiculous. This was the 2nd time they put me off or pushed back an appointment for hours to add additional work for another customer. If this repair wasn't for a recall, I wouldn't have called them back out. I even sent an email just after my first encounter stating my previous experience with lack of follow up on quotes and repairs. Dutton didn't even extend an email back with any type of resolution. I was copied (accidentaly)on the email which was forwarded to the Dutton team so I know it was received. When I say accidentally, I mean that when I spoke to scheduling Agent last week, I asked him about the Email and was told, "I didn't mean to copy you on the forwarded email". He had no response as to why I was never contacted. Obviously no one cares about overall customer satisfaction. Zero stars would have been more appropriate. read more

BEWARE . asked for maintenance snake 1 bathroom sink & 1 shower drain. After Assessment ( only 1 minor issue seen out to the street ) it was recommended I needed $10K of work to fix proactively. Then it was recommended I do hydojet whole house $3K . I looked it up and found average cost .is 600 to 900 $. I called back & Price then went down to 1K . Next day I decided to only do the original snaking - original price $73 each - when they came back to do it price went to $112 each and I was told it was never $73. He " had no record " of that - ie erased it off the i pad . Just be prepared folks. read more

Call Dutton to fuse some Poly gas pipe at my property. I spoke to Joe making him aware of the scope of the work and what I was expecting which was to fuse two joints together as the pipe was already in, he was courteous and the appointment was set for 8:15 AM the next day. At 8:45 they had still not arrived , got a call from them telling me he would be an hour late. Its now 9:15 and the tech calls and cant find my address for some reason?? I went outside to flag him down. He was up on the wrong street?? Once he arrived I showed him what needed to be done and this is what I was told....... 1. You should find a smaller company because we are to big for this little job.... 2. We charge by the task so this would be around 1000.00 to fuse the two joints.... 3. We dont even carry the equipment on our truck and would have to get it from the install team. So in summary, they wasted my morning by arriving an hour late only to tell me my job was to small and that they would over charge me and dont have the equipment on the truck that was the reason I called them for. I had Dutton plumbing install a water heater and a water filtration system a year ago and the whole time they tried to upsell me on something else. So I handled what I needed and moved on.. a year later I need the filter changed so I called them and the whole time they try to sell me on a whole house filtration system.. then I said please just handle this right now and we can discuss the rest later.. they said they have to wait 5-7 days for a replacement filter!! But if I wanted water they could discount the whole house system for me.. I finally got pissed and told them I am not concerned with anything but the drinking water.. using current necessary jobs as leverage to upsell other things.. totally wrong! I called these guys for water coming up in a bedroom. They did not pull up the carpet to check if the slab was cracked, and said it was coming from the bathroom. They wanted to do a whole re-pipe for the cold water, quoting $5600. I called another plumbing company and they came out and pulled up the carpet and gave me two options. 1. To abandoned the pipe in place and cap it off for $500 or 2. To do a whole re-pipe for the cold, quoting $3092. See the difference here on price. I told the 2nd plumbing company I would pay cash and they dropped it down to $2600, for a savings of $3000. Needless to say I will never use dutton or recommend them. I was very pleased with the work done at my house by Dutton Plumbing. Their service person was Danny D. with help from an apprentice. I called Dutton Plumbing to replace a garbage disposal, a bathroom sink trap, and an outdoor faucet. At my house I started talking with Dan about about my hard water situation here in Ventura and my existing salt-based water softener that I wasn't so happy with. Dutton proposed an upgrade including a high-end house water filter based on a multi-stage charcoal system. My hot water heater was ten years old so at my request Dutton included a new American-made water heater as well. The entire upgrade including a discount was expensive, but I recognized that I was dealing with a top-quality plumbing company who was proposing top-quality components. Dutton's field folks, Dan and his apprentice, spent two days at my house with labor to install several new copper pipes and other parts so that the house filter water would reach not only the interior of the house but also the extensive outside irrigation system in both the front and the back yards, like I wanted. The work required cutting open parts of the garage sheet rock wall for the pipes. The set up of the charcoal filter itself took very little time compared to the prep work they did. They never tried to increase the price for the extra work that was needed for the plumbing part of the installation which was beyond what I think they had expected. The craftsmanship of the work was impeccable; every little detail was attended to expertly with Dan's and his apprentice's abilities and work ethic. That kind of expertise and execution is very rare among plumbing contractors these days where I think many customers have forgotten what it's like to deal with real American quality in both parts and service. It costs more than the average big-box type of service but there really is no comparison. read more

It's 3:30 in the afternoon and Dutton just called to tell me their plumbers are all busy on other jobs, which means the service that was scheduled for 10:00 this morning will have to be rescheduled. The woman I spoke with offered me a "guaranteed appointment" tomorrow -- which of course led me to ask if I could just skip to a guaranteed appointment every time. She seemed downright indignant in telling me it doesn't work that way. I tried to tell her that yes it does -- it works that way with literally every other plumber, and it used to work that way with Dutton too. This is not the first time this has happened, despite the "lifetime service contract" I bought from Dutton several years ago, and I feel like a fool for having given Dutton another try. Clearly other customers are more important than I am. If you try to use Dutton, there will be other customers more important than you. If you're looking for service that makes you feel like your business is considered second-class, then Dutton is the plumber you should call. If you actually want your plumbing fixed, I would look elsewhere. read more

I "owed" them the $450 for the "dog and pony show" they performed. In the end...$600 to get them out of my house. Went to Lowes bought a heater for $650 and installed it in 2 hours. Then when you hit me with a 2- to 3 hundred dollar fee, I agree to keep Dutton, because if I didn't, I just threw the $75.00 that I was charged to come out, down my clogged shower, all the while not knowing the price would definitely be going up and triple by the time he was done, and by then it was just to late. David Walker came over and installed a servicing manifold for my tankless water heater and also installed a pressure relief valve. The relief valve needed a drain and since the heater is in the middle of the house, there was no good way to run it outside without ripping into walls to run the pipe outside. He had the brilliant idea of tapping into the standpipe of the toilet on the other side of the wall. He spent most of the day doing very detailed work, cut the wall open, installed the drainpipe, and closed it back up. Very professional job.
