We were staying in Bangor for a night, and while checking out local restaurant reviews, we found people in this area love Eagles Nest lobster rolls. People raved about this place and noted that they have gluten free rolls. I don't think I've ever seen a gluten free roll offered for a lobster roll! Disclaimer: my sensitivity is low (non-celiac, migraineur) and I cautiously gluten myself a few times a year to get necessary things --such as summer lobster rolls.
So we drove over to Brewer, and I was a little surprised by the outside appearance of the restaurant. It looks like a place you maybe wouldn't want to stop, just a little shack on the edge of the road, close to the river.
It was starting to rain lightly so we hurried in. I was asked my name, and then told to wait outside while they got a table ready, and this was a bit strange, I was instructed not to bring in the water bottle I was carrying. I must've looked confused because she explained that they have a policy of no outside drinks because "someone could choke on the cap and it's a liability." I was carrying electrolyte water for a medical reason, so I discretely stashed it in my coat pocket while we waited outside in the drizzle.
After a brief wait, we were welcomed into the snug dining room, which had booths on either side of the room and a large window overlooking the fast-moving Penobscot.
We were seated at a two-top between the booths against the back window. There wasn't really room for a table here and it was awkward. If people had been seated on either side of us we would have to get up out of our seats to let them into of their seats, and then they'd be trapped there. This is exactly what happened when two women were seated to the booth on our right. But our view was incredible and we saw what I think were great blue herons swooping out of their nest.
We ordered lobster rolls and I asked for a gluten free one with no lettuce. The waiter said something like oh no we don't add lettuce to the rolls here, and I was impressed. I'm a Mainer (I'm my family's first generation born here, which I realize doesn't count as being a true Mainer) and I believe that a good lobster roll doesn't mess around with lettuce or any other filler--ever. My companion ordered his lobster roll with a regular gluteny roll.
The food came out quickly. There was a pile of very tasty, hot fries, and I suspected they were not gf, (by the way no one bothered to ask if I had a severe allergy!). There was a large serving of coleslaw (I'd say about a half cup size) and the rolls had 1 - 1.5 lobsters worth of meat- a really generous portion for a good price. My partner's roll was made in a typical hotdog style, grilled roll with butter, heated.
My gluten free roll however, the bread I mean, was unappetizingly cold in the middle, not grilled or even toasted. I recognized it as an Udis brand hot dog roll, which comes frozen. Served unprepared like this, it was unpleasant, and it split apart down the center like they often do. I ate my lobster salad with a fork and left the roll behind. Fortunately we weren't charged extra for the honor of choosing gf like they do in a lot of places.
I've been watching a lot of Gordon Ramsay lately, and maybe it's made me a snob, but I was disappointed that they couldn't take a minute to prepare the gf roll with similar attention to what they give the regular ones. Maybe they knew it would just fall apart on the griddle. But they could toast it and brush it with some butter. At least they could serve it warm.
The lobster salad was good, big, but not the greatest I've ever had. That title would go to Becky's in Portland, and the reason they are the best is their rolls are huge & fresh and perfect to start with, but they also give you a little cup of melted butter to add to the lobster salad as needed . (Trust me. It's needed).
Eagles Nest's fries must be legendary in the minds of the locals--we loved them. But I'm not sure they are safe for celiacs and sensitive people. Question for the restaurant: were they dipped in a flour batter?
Overall, I would go there again but I'd ask for my gf roll to be grilled and I'd probably order it all to go.
Also I want to report that during our dinner I took a necessary (but respectfully discrete) swig of my smuggled in electrolyte water, and managed not to choke to death on my bottle cap! read more
