Came in on Friday night and it was just us in the restaurant. Their Tsingtao beer goes for 9?! Server was really nice albeit his 2nd day on the job. Gizzards taste like the Chinese cold meat served at restaurants but with a good kick. 2.5/5 Ginger scallion chicken: looks nothing like the picture. Completely difference sauce but nonetheless was surprised that it still tasted delicious. 3.5/5 Dan Dan noodles: delicious with that numbing Szechuan. Needs more meat but the noodles were perfects 4/5 Not bad of a restaurant if you want to try something new and support the locals!

Earl Spicy has been in the old Yi Yuan location for 5 years, the interior decor is same and serves Szechuan cuisine. Met up with some old friends for lunch the day after Thanksgiving. After conversation with the owner found out this will be their last week. They sold the restaurant due to health issues. We ordered a table full of food of which most were good. They said the new owners are going to keep some of the most popular items. Only three tables at lunch.

Came here at an odd hour with a group of 6 and the people who run the place were nice enough to seat and serve us while the restaurant was basically resting (we can at 3:00pm). We ordered 5 entrees, 2 veggies, salted egg yolk shrimp, cumin lamb and the signature fish. Everything was super tasty and came out super fast despite just the owner and her husband working! Would definitely order the cabbage, lamb and fish again, and would want to try other stuff next time. Overall really recommend this place for an authentic Chinese food group experience!

Food was great. They're known for their spicy grilled fish and it did not disappoint. I'm not a big fan of mala but this fish was so well-cooked the mala flavor really didn't bother me and in fact I quite enjoyed the taste with the savoriness of the fish. Unfortunately my spice tolerance is not that high so I could not eat a lot without my mouth dying but I still enjoyed it (and I think they allow you to adjust the spiciness so you can get it less spicy). But I really liked their salted egg and shrimp dish. Very flavorful. Also I liked their griddle cooked cabbage. It was very savory. Their cumin lamb tasted great, but I wish it had more lamb pieces. There were a lot of onion pieces (which I still liked and were very flavorful). Service was good as well. They only had 2 people working on the day we came (Sunday evening), yet the food came out in a timely manner. And they got me a spoon when I requested one, which I appreciate. The restaurant interior is nicely decorated with traditional Chinese pieces on the walls, which makes you feel like you are back in a royal Chinese courtyard. We parked in a small lot nearby. There is also street parking as well.

Tl;dr - if you like fish, get their Szechuan fried fish. Be warned they don't mess around with their mala spice. Came here on a Friday night close-ish to closing time. Got seated pretty quickly. What we got: - Golden sesame cake: consider getting this as an appetizer!! These remind me a bit of scallion pancakes cause the inside has layers with bits of green onion inside. The outside is a bit crunchy and loaded with sesame seeds. - Scallion and ginger cold noodles: another delish appetizer option with the perfect marriage of green onion and ginger flavors in a light sauce. Noodles weren't necessarily cold though but this didn't detract from the dish - Spicy grilled fish: easily the star of the show. They fry a large fish (can't remember what exactly) and drown it in mouth-watering, numbing mala spices and oils. The fish was fried to perfection and I was surprised by how much we really enjoyed this. It was spicy in the moment but I wasn't struggling afterwards.

I keep forgetting to review this restaurant. I think it's very authentic Szechuan food, but I've only been to Szechuan once, so I'm no expert. The chef and his wife are sometimes the only staff here. This causes slow service at times. We saw a non-Chinese couple wait for 10 minutes by the entrance and no staff member seated them, so they left. I've attached some menu photos because I really am not familiar with most of the dishes. Everything we have ordered was good, but my husband found many dishes too spicy for his palette. The deep fried fish looks like their signature dish, but it's huge, too much for 2-3 people. If you are patient and adventurous, and like spicy food, come with a group to try a lot of dishes.

I love this place. The people working here are super nice and informative. It honestly looks sketch lol from the outside cause it's strangely empty and they don't play any background music so I thought it was closed Food: I tried their green beans, salted egg crab, sweet potato dessert, and glutinous rice ball in sweet wine soup. My absolute fav is the glutinous rice ball in sweet wine soup dessert and it reminds me of home and just warms the soul. Their salted egg crab is a super unique dish and it was so tasty. I normally don't like salted egg lol and pick it out of every moon cake but the salted egg they use here is so good Service: really kind people and the restaurants wife told us her husband has a lot of famous restaurants back in china that just sells the salted egg crab and I can def see why lol Ambience: really big restaurant that can host a huge family and really cool traditional decorations

The best sinchuan restaurant in bay area. This is a family owned restaurant run by a husband and a wife and what can I say the best hospitality you can get ever. The lady owner was very sweet and explained to us different dishes and gave her recommendations. We went on a friday evening, it was a bit quiet with only couple of tables occupied, but after like 15 mins the place became half full. We ordered sesame hot cake, chongqing chicken, fish fillet in green peppercorn sauce and steamed rice. The food was absolutely delicious. Portions size are huge. The owner mentioned she bakes the sesame cake herself. Sesame cake- light and fluffy. Crispy on outside and soft in middle. Chongqing chicken- chicken cooked perfectly and right amount of heat. Fish- hot and sour gravy/soup with mustard greens, tofu and rice noodles. Perfect for a cold evening Overall we had great experience.

I'm not sure why this place is not popular. Everything we ordered were so good. Very very good actually. Price wise, they are at par with the rest of the Bay Area. However, they have half sizes around $15 ish, which is awesome for 2. I took 1 star for the iffy business practice. First of all, they did not tell us that they are imposing service charge. Ours had a 18% additional fee. We were okay with that. We split the check to 2 CC and suddenly the total surcharge changed to 23% without our consent. The amount was not the issue, the quiet "I slapped you while you were not looking" practice left a sour note. Anyway, we will only do take out in the future ‍

We arrived on Sunday around 4:30 p.m. We were basically the only customers there as another table was just leaving. There were several call-in orders and people picking up food while we were there. The menu is extensive, so it took us several minutes to decide what to order. We eventually decided on: Cage-Free Chicken Numbing Spicy Pot: This was designated with one chili sign on the menu. (Items on the menu range from zero to three chilis). When it came out, It looked really hot with green chilis and the red oil, but it actually wasn't THAT spicy. My SO even ate all the green chilis. Anyway, the dish was flavorful and went really well with the white rice we ordered separately. Won Ton Soup - We asked for noodles to be added (for an additional fee of course). There were a lot of large wontons, but the broth wasn't that flavorful. This was just ok. Leek Pancakes - These pancakes are big, stuffed with chopped up leek and glass noodles. We used it to mop up some of the sauce from the chicken pot! Not bad at all! This is place is definitely good bang for the buck!

Summary: Wonderfully flavorful Sichuan and Hunan cuisine Details: * Extensive menu with a ton of fairly authentic dishes, with a range of spice levels that can also be adjusted upon request * The spicy grilled fish in one of their specialties, comes in a few different serving size options, and absolutely worth getting if you like flavorful and tender fish * The Chongqing spicy fried chicken is similar to ones elsewhere, though they seem to fry it in a slightly different way that lends to pretty enjoyable texture * While flavorful, the dishes were all a bit on the saltier side, though I imagine you can request that they use less sodium * Staff here is super friendly and pretty chatty towards those who want to chat Accessibility: Pretty spacious interior with lots of accessible seating options

Food here is definitely spicy and loaded with chili. If you like spicy, you'll enjoy this spot! The corn shrimp (I think that's what it's called, don't quote me) on the bottom photo was my favorite! Staff here was attentive and nice!

We visited the restaurant this noon and ordered just one grilled fish dish, which is over-priced(total about $70). The fish is not fresh and tastes bland as if they didn't add any salt at all. Not only does the food tastes bad, the owner of the restaurant is a deceitful person. We wanted to order the $30ish dollar fish, she told us they only have the $40 dollar one, i m guessing she just says the same thing to every customer given other yelp comments have also pointed this out. That's fine, that's fine. At the end when we got a $85 check which is fking ridiculous given that we only ordered one fish dish with some rice, spam, lotus root! The items price don't add up to $85 so we confronted the owner and she admitted she had the wrong number because she thought we ordered the 7-pound fish or something. Well only God knows if you had the wrong number or you just do this regularly to seemingly gullible customers? read more

My lovely sister recommended me and my husband to try this restaurant. It was first time trying szechuan foods and I'm addicted now. It's very hard to find a restaurant having fresh cat fish cooked in green pepper like this restaurant. The fish is very soft and delicious. Every time we come, we asked for less spicy bcuz my husband cannot handle in the first time. The owner is very nice and remembers what we like. Decided to give this place a try while in Millbrae with my friends, given all of the positive reviews. Maybe it's because we didn't order the fish like everyone else, but I was less than impressed with both their food and service. Food - 3 stars *Beijing Zha Jiang Mian - fine, like any other place. *Chongqing Spicy Fried Chicken - below average for a dish that's hard to make wrong. The taste was fine but the chicken was dry because it was white meat popcorn chicken rather than the usual bone-in dark meat. *Sparerib & Shrimp Spicy Pot - average... have had better dry spicy pots elsewhere. *Dessert - got pumpkin pancake with red bean paste thinking if would be like the one you get from IPOT (for those familiar). But, it was oily, flat with little paste, and burnt. DO NOT ORDER. Service - 0 star if possible *Waiter took the order of 3 other tables before us even though we were seated first. *Because of the above, we also got our food last, which took forever by the way. *Could never get a hold of a server ever when we needed something... like more tea, putting in a dessert order, or even getting the check (ended up going up to the front to get our credit card after they finally took it because no one came back after like 10 minutes!) *Servers saw our hands raised in need of service, but chose to ignore or pretend they didn't see (obvious, because there was eye contact). I caught one lady walking by with an "excuse me", who then told us to wait, she will "come back"... but didn't come back for over 5 minutes. She didn't even ask us what we needed before telling us to wait! I have pretty low expectations for service at any Asian restaurant, but this was just the worst of the worse. I have no idea why the service towards our group was so horrible (the 3 of us all speak English, but also speak Chinese and have spoken to them in both languages). Anyway, to sum it all up-- I will definitely not be coming back. There are plenty of better quality and service Szechuan restaurants in the SF/Peninsula. SKIP TRYING THIS ONE. read more

We went to this place 2 years ago when this restaurant just grand opened, the food was pretty good with 3 dishes more than $100. Recently we went there again, 3 dishes with more than $100, we were so disappointed of the taste of all dishes we ordered. The vegetables dish with mushrooms tasted rotten bad smell and bitter, it ruined whole dish. The expensive spicy fish filets tasted like not freshly cooked. All the hot spicy red peppers and green peppers in all dishes were also not freshly cooked but were reused by appearance and taste. read more

I went to this place two times this past week. If you really want how the grill fish taste like in china, you better come here. Best grill fish in the bay area in 2019! Do forget to add extra vegetables because you will order more and more for you hungry stomach. Soy sauce is good for people that's couldn't eat spicy food. Decided to stop by for dinner tonight to finally choose more of their dishes. We had briefly spoke with the owner, super nice lady. This place is a very cute mom and pop shop, serving authentic Szechuan delicacies. All the dishes that we ordered was packed with great flavors and super delish! We ordered the leek pancake, fish fillet with sour cabbage in green pepper sauce, tea smoked duck, sautéed green beans, cauliflower with crispy pork, duck tongue, beef ramen. If you haven't given this place a try yet, I highly suggest stopping by, you won't be disappointed. Currently my new favorite restaurant in Millbrae. read more

I got to-go from here and it was decent. They do still have a good amount of signage up from Yi Yuan, which is a bit odd. They really should take it down and make this place their own. It was hard to communicate with the man who took my order as his English wasn't great. It was his first day and he wasn't familiar with the menu. The lady owner is very sweet. I ordered the xiao long bao (8 for $8.95). This was good but the xiao long bao were small and not worth over a dollar each. I also ordered the mapo tofu which was okay. Lastly, I ordered the fish fillet with pickled mustard green soup. This was supposed to be one of their best dishes. I thought it was okay. Hu Bei's is still the best I've had for this particular dish. I would give them another try. The previous Yi Yuan was just okay for me. I ate there many times and got to go many times. To go, for some reason, just wasn't good for Yi Yuan. Eating there was okay. Hopefully this new place does better than the previous Yi Yuan. read more

Ordered Chongqing noodles. Well yes the portion size was a snack (like the size of a side of hash browns). It came to over $14. During inflation we can expect to see prices go up or portions go down... but both??? Also the noodles were cool and they were supposed to be hot. I'm certain the noodles were sitting around for a while and not under any heat lamp. Disappointing. read more

Disappointed with this place. First time ordering here. The Boiled Spicy Fish, the fish is flavorless, and feels mushy. Chicken is dry. The beef rolls are Hella expensive for 3 slices? I don't know what's going on. The other reviewers rave about the food. Maybe the chef was out and someone had to step in? Green beans were a little soggy... not great, but passable. Only saving grace from a one star was the duck tongue. Prob won't come back. I miss the old restaurant that used to be at this location. read more

Its a family owned restaurant run by just a husband and wife. They took over the place just right before the pandemic, and there was no reduction in rent at all from the landowner so they just could not afford to hire more staff. Please be kind to them and understand before coming here that the service might be slow, but the lady owner will treat you with utmost care and friendliness. Now on to the food, it was amazing as usual. I ordered the green peppercorn grilled fish and it was soooo tasty. I also liked the shallot oil noodles and salted egg shrimp which comes with little fried bits of corn. Tasty! read more

This restaurant is more than merely a "Szechuan restaurant", or a "Chinese restaurant", but instead a "Chinese-fusion" restaurant, symbolizing an innovative combination of diverse China's dietary culture. We went there the first weekend when it was opened. The lady manager recommended their specialty: fish with rattan pepper and sour cabbage （"藤椒鱼" on the menu）-we ordered it. As a person who loves Szechuan food, I could tell their "藤椒鱼" was more delicious in such a way that it "mysteriously" stimulated you appetite, and that the soup was thicker and milkier. The soup contained sour cabbage （酸菜）, which is conventionally used as a spice in Northeastern China. The Szechuan flavor and Northeastern flavor somehow had an interesting chemical reaction in the soup and generated an amazing taste. As the lady manager was proud of, "guests are usually satisfied by 100%". Being newly-opened, the restaurant was not that crowded, allowing us to chat with the lady manager briefly. We grand opening Earl Spicy on June 28th, 2019. The principle we run the business is customer first, and provide authentic Szechuan food with the best quality and supreme service.

Meet the Business Owner: Qiong Z.

I run the Szechuan Restaurant called Earl Spicy with my husband, who is the National First class Chef in China. We run several Szechuan restaurants in China very successfully over decades. To be closer to our daughter, who is working at one of the Top-tier IT companies in Silicon Valley, we sold all our business in China and moved to Bay area. We found there was almost no authentic Szechuan food in the whole Bay area. So, we decided to open a Szechuan restaurant by ourselves. The principle we run this Szechuan restaurant is customers first, authentic Szechuan food with the best quality and supreme service.

The ownership has changed. The former head chef of this restaurant bought out the restaurant. A few reviews mentioned the food doesn't taste as good when in fact it was this chef who made the place popular a few years back.
