i'm usually not one to complain, and am just happy to be eating rn lol. but i do have to say, the vegan labeling of their food is pretty dang misleading. i ordered from doordash and got the "Tempura Vegan Udon Noodles" it literally says vegan in the title, but it has fish cake (naruto) in it which is a bit sus. so i specified vegan just in case, even though it states that it is indeed vegan multiple times lol. alas, what i received is tasty but.. there's no tempura to be found. i wouldn't have paid so much if i knew it would just be steamed vegetables, but they claim the tempura is vegan (literally.. in the title) same problem with the crunchy asparagus roll. i wouldn't have paid so much for it if i knew it would just be straight steamed asparagus. otherwise, the food is generally decent, albeit too expensive for the quality imo. the ambiance is nice, but i've had literally some of the worst service i've ever had in my life there- so bad that it was funny please take this into consideration for all the other hungry vegan college students out there, we don't have enough money to waste on plain steamed vegetables y'all it's kinda ridiculous. otherwise, i would recommend if you're willing to pay so much on just decent food. read more

It's our second nights in town and tumbled to this very good restaurant. It's packed on the weekday evening, but we were lucky to get the table with a nice view of the historical downtown street. The sushi and other dishes are excellent with a very nice and friendly service. We had specialty rolls: Vampira and Rainball rolls, Shrimp tempura rolls, Shrimp tempura and vegetable. Can't wait to return . The food and service were great! For our first visit we ordered 4 different items from the happy hour Menu and appetizer list so we could try a variety. We found the portion sizes of the 4 appetizers was enough for a smallish meal. The restaurant was clean and fairly quiet. After my Sister and brother in law had dined at their Italian sister restaurant, we were expecting a little more in this restaurant! Sister had ordered Steak, in which she said was very good. I on the other hand had ordered the Tempura shrimp and veggies. On ordering I specifically mentioned to waiter no asparagus and no mushrooms on the tempura veggies. Well when Waiter brought it out, he mentioned that he forgot to tell chefs no asparagus or no mushrooms. Well no happy with that ! Great potential. I love the atmosphere here and the location! The food was decent but the service made everything pretty grotty. The hostess seemed flustered when I walked in and before helping me, she picked up her personal phone and started talking to someone. It was extremely unprofessional. She gave me the "wait" finger and very little eye contact. She then decided to help me out. The wait was almost an hour so I decided to order to go. She was not very nice taking my order and seemed like she didn't know what she was doing. When I got home, I was missing several items I asked for. I also had partially cold food. Not okay. How did the kitchen and the front of house workers both mess up on the same person. If the owners and managers would hire workers who actually have passion for the restaurant industry, then I could see this place being a top place in Durango. All the potential in the world. LOVED this place! It is not often a restaurant will be able to accommodate a walk-in party of 10 and they delivered! And, it was in this fantastic square booth, where we could all see each other's faces and enjoy each other's company. Server was phenomenal. Was her name Kiwi? She was the sweetest. Terrible. We were greeted by the hostess asking another employee "where am I supposed to put these people?" Neither seemed to know and she just sat us at the first table even though there were much better tables. The place was mostly empty as we came in at 8:00. Our server never checked on us and forgot part of our order. He clearly did not want to be there and we overheard him getting reprimanded by another employee. We had to find another person to get the missing part of our order and then ask another for utensils. Miso soup was awful. Too salty. Hot green tea had too many tea leaves shoved into the pot and it was too bitter as a result. For a Japanese restaurant not to get the basics of tea and miso soup wrong is not a good sign. We had heard OK things about this place. We wanted a nice dinner out for our family of 5, 3 older teenage boys. We beat the rush and ordered right away. Place was full within 5 minutes. We ordered sushi & hot food. Our waitress mentioned food would come out at different times. We knew that as this was not our first time at a place like this. Over the course of the next 30 minutes, most of our food came out, except 2 sushi rolls that were the meal for 1 of the boys. Our son kept an eye on our waitress, LeAnne, from across the room. She saw he did not have his food and did nothing but keep talking to another server. Knowing sushi, we saw both rolls he ordered go to a table across the room that ordered 15 minutes after us. When our waitress can to "check on us" she still seemed clueless and/or didn't care that not all the food came out. She quickly blamed it on being busy. No apology just diversion. When she finally brought the food, same thing, no apology. That was just the service. The food, especially the hot food, totally lacked any flavor. The "spicy" did not even have the spice heat of regular pepper. Like others we spoke with a "manager" that like the others, he didn't care. We left a better than appropriate tip for the crummy service. All I know is that it is not a place we will recommend nor visit again. read more

Found this place after a different sushi place was closed down for Labor Day. Drinks were great and at reasonable prices. We had the blackberry sake, which was delicious. For dinner we ordered a California roll (it was ok), a spicy tuna roll (loved it) and a shrimp tempura roll (also just ok) and edamame as an appetizer. For the most part it was great. Appetizers (couple of sushi rolls and beef yakitori) were really good, and mojitos were really good. My wife got Japanese fried rice and loved it. I got the pad thai, and it was just okay. Way oversauced and the sauce wasn't the greatest, BUT I know this isn't the kind of dish that is not the specialty of this place... which is sushi. I just really wanted Pad Thai more than sushi tonight. Service was excellent all around, had to sit at the bar because of the reservations, and it shows why. The only real issue we had that my wife got chicken in her rice when she ordered shrimp. We brought it up simply because the shrimp costs more, and only wanted it corrected to reflect that, but they credited us for half of the dish even though we tried to tell them we just wanted to pay the correct price for the dish we received, because she was very happy with the dish. So that is just another reflection of the service in a great way. I'd recommend this place, and we will probably be back sometime in the future. read more

So East by Southwest was probably the first sushi place in Durango. And for that no small feat I praise them. I'm sure it wasn't easy to get fresh sushi quality fish to Durango in a cost effective way. So this restaurant WAS unique, (10 years ago) And a special place to go on a date for something different. And most people would gladly pay out the .....to get something out of the norm in this small mountain town. But now we have 3 more sushi places in town and I can honestly get just as good sushi more affordably elsewhere in Durango now. And if we are discussing flavor, and quality? Then please travel and eat sushi in some cities, any city, and you will find better selection, quality, flavor and prices. This was the worst service we've had in a long time. I wanted to enjoy this sooo bad...but after waiting 40 minutes to just put in our order, then another 30 for 1 roll we had to leave. We asked for our check. Paid $50 for an app and 1 roll and walked away. Normally I'd probably embrace a 3 hr meal but this place is a wreck. Unfortunately, this place has gone downhill. We have been coming to East by Southwest for years, never have we experienced bad service and bad food before. The bartender had no clue how to make a Sazerac, it was terrible. The sushi rolls were rolled loosely and fell apart. They served the ginger and wasabi full of juice and it destroyed the wasabi. Thankfully we read the reviews on this restaurant and made a mental note about the service - because it was, indeed, poor. Knowing this was a common complaint, we did not get too upset when our waitress didn't check on us and took too long with our drink orders. It's unfortunate that our waitress put a damper on the experience, because the food is phenomenal. We had an appetizer of snapper, halibut, and bass sashimi in a lime and cilantro sauce that was truly delicious. We then had 3 of the specialty rolls: The Surf & Turf $28 The Triple Tuna (spicy) $11ish Thai Roll $11ish The tuna roll was amazing: it's a tuna bomb with kick. The Thai roll had great flavor that centers on the peanut sauce. The Surf and Turf was good, but compared with the other food we had, I thought it was disappointing. It was good, it just didn't stand out flavor-wise compared to the other dishes. The sushi chefs were great and make dishes of beauty. When I went up to put a tip in their jar, they saw me do it and hit the gong above their station and clapped their hands. They genuinely appreciated the recognition, and everyone in the restaurant turned to see what was going on. It was great. Sushi? In Durango? Why the hell not? We stopped in here at the behest of a local since we were looking for something light and then came across an outstanding asian menu. We wanted everything... but opted for some local beers, sushi, nigiri, seaweed salad, miso. All of the reviews told us to expect terrible service but ours was okay. Not stellar mind you... but decent. Our miso and seaweed salads were nicely done. But the real star was the fish. Surprisingly fresh and buttery, the black snapper, hamachi and halibut were some of the best we've had. We also indulged in a caterpillar roll and a hamachi love. The latter was too spicy for us and I dig spicy. But that business required like 34 glasses of water. So beware. That Caterpillar roll though was delightful. Topped with a little roe, it was a thing of beauty. With a little work, and some staff training, this spot could be a regular spot for locals. read more

At least the most spacious spot to sit down and have some sushi while in Durango. The rolls are fine, however an overwhelming amount of ghost pepper salt seems to be added to both the Hamachi and Spicy Tuna rolls. Almost inedible. It's a perfect of example of when "less is more", especially when pairing with any sushi options. The service staff was ok. Pleasant enough, however the empty dishes just pile up on the table and they don't come by to refill water glasses or ice tea. Some training definitely warranted. read more

After tasting legit sushi from Japan nothing can really measure up... the sushi from this place is just OK, nothing that special. First off East by Southwest is connected to the next door Golden Triangle which is a Thai restaurant so I thought it was kind of strange that we went to East by Southwest but were seated in the Golden Triangle. It's good since they can serve more customers but still weird. Our server was excellent!! She was very nice and always came by to make sure everything was okay. As for the food the sushi was average but the gyoza (potstickers) were pretty good except I thought the skin was too thick. My sister got the Thai tea with boba and the boba was BAD! Don't order it, it was crunchy and disintegrated instead of being soft and chewy like it should have been. Tempura was good because the batter was light and it wasn't too oily (recommend this!) I ordered pad thai with tofu and was sad because it was a HUGE pile of noodles and very little tofu and other things like bean sprouts, egg etc. So that was kind of a let down. The Massaman Curry had way too many green apples and the rice was mushy because it was cooked with too much water. Overall kind of a meh experience especially since this place is pricey!! read more

The sushi is great, they have kid-friendly options (ask them about the cotton candy machine!) and the service is always fabulous.
