But get the extra-large and enjoy the delicacies provided by local veggie offerings, from mashed rutabega and carmelized onion sauce with various mushrooms and fresh basil leaves to a butternut squash base topped with roasted root vegetables in a balsamic-garlic reduction. This is crazy NY style thin crust with crazy toppings you'd never think to put on a pizza. But damn, do they work it! My new favorite is the Nacho Veggie pizza. Black bean spread, avocados, onions, cherry tomatoes and jalapenos. Good, spicy, and worthy of goin down my gullet. That being said, it's tough for me to pay $3 for a slice half the size in Austin, TX, but well. What can you do? East Side Pies is good. But I learned to like my pizza simple; a general rule in the cooking world is that if you can master simple, then everything else is easy. And while their plain pizza is good, it's just a taaaaad too thin for my taste. Is it better than Home Slice? Yes. Definitely. Home Slice is way too thick and lately just not very flavorful. So me and the lady are out doing some weekend errands and before we know it, breakfast seems like forever ago. Now I don't know about you, but when I get hungry, I get irrational- grumpy, short-tempered, frustrated by even the smallest inconvenience. Luckily, as I was about to discover, East Side Pies was only a couple of blocks away. Thin crust, and I mean really thin - like paper thin, but also with a perfect balance between crispy and chewy. The sauce was like none other. I don't know what goes into it, but it tastes like they make it fresh right before it goes in the oven. And I thought Homeslice was good! Don't let the hipster atmosphere of this place scare you, I promise this is some of the best pizza you'll have in Austin! East Side Pies doesn't look like a place that would be hopping on the outside, but their pizza is incredible! My girlfriend and I were a little wary when we parked and ESP looked like a gas station holed out with a door that says "PULL." The hipster delivery boys scared her too... but I told her it would be okay ;) Honestly though, this pizza is incredible! My girlfriend and I shared a 14-inch Big Medium, which had bacon, mushrooms, gorgonzola, and spinach. After waiting for only about 15 minutes, our pizza was boxed up and ready to go! My girlfriend and I were pretty impressed with the timing, but we were also impressed by the seating area! It was covered, but pretty open with a great view of... the street. I'm usually not a thin crust fan, but their thin crust is awesome! They do such a great job of creating a pizza that has moist ingredients, but still contains an incredibly crispy crust. Aside from the crust winning me over, the ingredients were super-high quality and the customer service was great. I HIGHLY recommend ESP. Big. Tasty. Too Expensive. I'm still looking for a pie that will make me cheat on my main squeeze, that pizza shrine on South Congress with about 200 reviews. Fear not my longtime pizza companion--the relationship is still safe babe--you and I, destined to share our White Clam goodness and eponymous basil-laden Margherita tastiness for a while to come. East Side makes a big tasty pie, but it's just not great. I'd eat it, (and did) and I might order it again on a sleet-filled night at the nearby Scoot Inn where they are cool enough to deliver for a small fee. But it's not a world beater by any measure. The basil was fresh, but not very flavorful, the tomatoes the halved cherry variety that left them a tiny bit undercooked at times, and the mozz was mozz. The crust was good, but too thin for my taste. (Crust this thin is not NY-style in any of the parts of NY or NYC that I have lived) All good, but nothing special. The stuffed garlic rolls sounded promising (roasted red pepper and ham I think) and they might have been if they were actually baked. These needed at least another 20 minutes in the oven. As delivered, they were doughy, cold and inedible. At $22.50 for an 18" pie, and $10 for potential garlic rolls, the $34 delivery to the Scoot just didn't really "deliver" for me. We moved to East 11th street recently. During our move, we found ourselves famished, and unsure of where to eat in our new hood. I remembered a friend telling me a while ago about East Side Pies. So we drove over and pondered our choices of pie. You know when you are so hungry, everything looks good and you find that you just can't make a decision.? So you close your eyes and point, and stick with it. We landed on the Chicago. Great pie. The crust is thin, as I like it, and it holds up to the toppings. It was baked perfectly to withhold the toppings without sagging. I was truly impressed. You can get 14" or 18" pies. we opted for the smaller of the two, but probably could have finished off the larger (just the two of us), as it was THAT good. Yes, this review was inspired by Homer, Marge and Lu, but I'm not talking about characters on the popular animated Fox television show! Those cool kids on the east side sure know how to toss a good pizza pie. I dig the creative and unorthodox topping combos, and bonus points for calling them names like "Girther", "Guiche (HA!)", and "Buscemi". I pray nightly that they expand their delivery zone just a mile south of town lake so I too can call on them when I need some thin crust crispy cheesy deliciousness... I get a little turned off when I have to make the trip to their tiny east Austin establishment, which literally feels like walking into a pizza oven, and seeing flies buzzing around slices in the display case that look like they been sitting there a while. Then again, you can also score slices a few other places around town like Rio Rita, Flight Path, Epoch... pretty much if they've named a pie after them, you can probably get it there. East Side Pies broke my heart a little. This was the pizza that forced me to come to terms with the fact that I will never find "true" pizza in Austin. Well, my true pizza anyway. Everyone needs to discover their own pizza truth. Because pizza is serious business. I had heard rumors that ESP would do a square-cut pizza upon request. When their website confirmed this fact, I was elated. So when the next pizza-eating opportunity presented itself, I insisted on heading to East Side. This next part is hard to write. The second I got home I flung open the box, eager to see the square-cut beauty inside. And...it was wrong. It was just...wrong. The squares were not even; the ones in the middle were far too large. My dreams were slowly fading. But square-cutting seems to be a regional thing, so I was willing to forgive the imperfections if the taste was right. Well, they got that sort of right. The sauce was flavorful and the sausage was excellent. Spicy, but not so spicy as to overwhelm the rest of the flavors. However, there is the unfortunate matter of the crust. Calling this pizza "thin crust" is an overstatement. It's like eating an overcooked cracker. It could barely support the toppings. I don't know what that recipe is for, but it's not pizza crust. Will somebody please explain the craze about this paper thin pizza style here in Austin? East Side Pies was another failed attempt for me trying to get into this trend of NY style anorexic thin pizza, or pies as they call em. The price was reasonable, a slice of pepperoni for $3.00 flat. Being early afternoon, they weren't busy, so they got my slice "warmed" up in a matter of no time. Realistically, it felt as if they had just thrown it in a microwave on a 30 second timer and then handed it over. Now I don't expect my pizza to be blazing-burn-my-mouth hot, but I do expect there to be some warmth to it - this totally lacked that. The upside to the slice was the size as well as the size of the pepperonis. The pepperonis were Dolly Parton size if you know what I mean. And as mentioned in previous reviews, there is a bit of a crisp, but it is mostly in the crust. Now considering I was in & out, I really can't say much about the service. Some people claim the employees are totally awesome and such, but the most I got was "How can I help you?....That'll be $3.00". So take it for what it's worth, but I'm just saying how it was. So will I ever come back to ESP? Ya sure most likely. I just moved and am now living a mile away, so it may become a regular stop out of convienience rather than for awesome quality. The bartender suggested East Side Pies. I'd never ordered from there before so I was game. I ordered a large peperoni pizza. They delivered to the bar I was at and while I do think the price was really high for a large pep pizza ($19? Really?) I shelled out the $$. I didn't realize it would be thin crust - which just resulted in me having to eat more slices than I would've liked to consume. However, the pizza was tasty and delivered piping hot. I almost feel like I'm not qualified to write this review because no matter how many times I come here, I'm still confused as to what to order and how exactly to do it while maintaining street cred in front of the really cool and hipster patrons/people who work here. All I know is - I LOVE THEIR PIZZA! I love how the crust is thin but crunchy on the edges. I love their fresh and plentiful toppings. I love the decor! Everything is very customizable. You can add whichever toppings you want to whichever sauce for a reasonable price. They have pizza by the slice - and not just pepperoni and cheese but interesting ones too - and they have other menu items such as the garlic knots (which are more really just garlic butter glazed bread, just fyi, so not super my cup of tea). And if anyone from out of town comes, I know that I'll be trying 100% to tear them away from the jaws of overrated Homeslice to bring them here. Downsides for some people are that there is very limited parking, limited seating (no indoor seating), the order area is small, and (for me especially) there are SO many mosquitos in the area. But take it from someone who got bitten no less than 10 times the last time she was here, the pizza is worth it. So come, pig out. Finish a 14 inch between you and one other friend. Sometimes living on the east side of town sucks - like when your umbrella or your potted plant gets stolen right off your front porch. But other times, it's a blessing. I ordered a 14" SMORS - Italian sausage, mushroom, roasted onions, roasted red peppers and spinach pie and it was delivered in an hour. It was $16.50 ($15 + $1.50 delivery fee) but worth every freakin' penny. The thin crust was crunchy and delightful. The toppings were plentiful and spread out in a pleasing pattern of equalness that made my OCD side sigh in happiness. There was fresh grated parmesan and red pepper flakes and two pepperocinis in the box - it was heaven. I scarfed down 3 slices and then breathed - content and full. I highly recommend the SMORS and the OLIVIA is awesome as well. I'm a big time carnivore but the OLIVIA - pesto, eggplant, arthichoke hearts, kalamata olives, black and green olives, roasted garlic and feta - fills you up with all those veggies and savory yumminess. The italian sausage has got to be homemade, it's soo delicious with just the right amount of fennel and flavor. I'm going to have to work myself through the menu because it all sounds so appetizing and I'm intrigued by the flavor combos - curry pizza? So I just moved to Austin. ESP had to be my first Austin review. My boyfriend introduced me to this little piece of heaven about two years ago. I love and hate him for it. I would get an ESP craving and curse the fact it would take me an hour and a half to drive from San Antonio to fulfill it. There were a couple of times when I drove to Austin just to get their pizza and drive home. Am I crazy? Obviously. My favorite is the Buscemi. YUM. This is incredible pizza. For those of us who are pizza obsessed we all have our opinions, personal preferences and go-to restaurants. ESP is amazing and is just my kind of pizza. Right up there with Home Slice, this pizza is incredibly thin and delicious. The ratio of sauce to cheese is perfect and it's just salty enough without being overkill. It's as greasy as a pizza should be, not dripping but not dry. It is thinner than Home Slice but, like I said, that's one of the things I love best about this pizza. A bunch of us were celebrating a birthday at the Longbranch, and we found out that we could order in there from East Side Pies. As a self-designated pizza snob, I was very skeptical. These guys came through, though. The large pies were indeed large. The pies are not cut up into regular slices, but smaller mini-slices. We ordered a Mizza and a Mediterranean. The crust was excellent. It was crisp and had a nice, subtle flavor. The Mizza was a delicious cardiac on crust. It had sausage, ham, bacon, meatball, and pepperoni on it. The meats were of good quality, and there was a nice balance of each. The Mediterranean pizza was equally tasty, and arguably much healthier. With hummus, eggplant, artichoke, sundried tomatoe, feta, and kalamata olives, it is not lacking in flavor. Once again, all of the ingredients tasted fresh and of high quality. These guys are doing their own thing. It's not the authentic New York style of Homeslice, but a delicious and original brand of it's own. read more

Gotta love the pies! They have so many to chose from and it's located just across the street from my house! Walking distance pizza?? Woo Hoo!! Someone had mentioned that there are only two small tables... which is true in FRONT of East Side, but on the SIDE there are a few more tables. It's actually quite comfy to sit there and watch the traffic go by on Rosewood. The view of the mural on the library is quite nice too! This place is perfect for both vegetarians and carnivores. The salads are very nice and hardy with Delicious vinaigrette's. AND they serve both organic root beer/cream soda and Mexican soda's. My favorite pie by far would have to be the Jamaican (jalapenos, HABENEROS, pineapple, sweet red onion, and jerk chicken), it's a fiery pie but the way all the flavors come together on your palate is outstanding. ESP does lose star off for a smattering of inconstancy on pie "doneness' and one time the delivery did take 1 hour and a half, as opposed to the usual hour. Their specials that they have to purchase by the slice are quite nice and are usually made with unique vegetables or meats like dill, potato, broccoli, etc. One thing that is special about ESP is their massive variety. If you check out their menu, you will see a ton of different pizza bases, from hummus, black bean, chimichurri, or pesto, just to plain red sauce. I have tried their olivia: it is a pesto-base pizza chock full of different kinds of olives. I have never seen so many olives on a pizza, and I must say, I was very happy! I used to work at the library right across form East Side Pies. I used a bike to commute to work, so I never really had the chance to order a pizza and enjoy it at home. One day, I finally decided that I would grab a pizza and strap it on my bike rack and bike all the way home. The staff was friendly; they helped me strap on the pizza to my bike rack. After being mistaken for a delivery boy, I biked all the way back home (UT campus). Even with 15 minutes of bumpy commute, which resulted in a messy pizza, this pizza was still amazing. Their thin crust is exceptionally delicious and strong enough to support the toppings. The sausage (I ordered a sausage pizza) was out of this world. I split the pizza in half with my roommate, and after eating my half, I began to regret sharing with him, and my motto is "sharing is caring, and it can be fun!" It was that good. read more

Living on the east side, I've been going to East Side Pies for some time. However I swore that I would not post anything until I could convince 2 die hard Homeslice lovers that East Side is better then Homeslice. I'll admit, the first pie I ever had from East Side was not the best and it was about 3 months before I went back. I guess it could have just been that they had recently opened, were getting use to the ovens or something else but after the second time I became a fan and will stand up for East Side Pies against SouthSide or Homeslice. Pies/slices are big even if you order a small. I once had a pizza dinner party in which I ordered 2 larger, a side salad and one order of Garlic Rolls for 8 people and still had 2 slices left over. The crust is just right, not to think or think with the outer crust crisp to toasted which is perfect for ranch dipping. Venue isn't big to eat there if you have a big group but easy enough for small (2-4 people) group. Favorite is to order a Pepperoni, Italian Sausage & Black olives and don't forget to grab a brownie, they are awesome! read more

Eh, I've had better. We ordered something that had Italian sausage and bell pepper on it, and when it finally came out, my heart sank. It was really undesirable-looking. The bell peppers were overcooked, and the Italian sausage hunks were way too big-- almost fork and knife worthy. The taste was alright, but the pie was so loaded down with over sized toppings that the slices were soggy and limp. Also, when we ordered two greek salads to go with it, the waitron at the counter said, "Uh, we're out of salad." What? Um, OK... it was like 9 pm. Minus 1 star. Oh, and minus 1 star for being asked if we had any cigarettes we could "sell" by a passerby. Seriously? People still do the "I'll give you a quarter for a ciggie" routine?? Here, just take one. Ok finally made it back to east side pies for the first time in a while after a pleasant bike ride through east austin. i wanted to mention how i forgot the crust is so extremely thin but packs a mean crunch. i love that in a pizza! the patio area was also re-done since i'd been there, so there's more ample seating, and it was great to hang out to stretch out our legs on a beautiful day. they also have a bit more variety in their pizzas from last time, like pesto, tomato, mozzarella, and chicken/green chiles. i got sausage, carmelized onions, and green bell peppers. delish. there's also a decent bathroom. i wish the slices were crunchier all the way through instead of just the crust. i think mine came out 1-2 min early and would've appreciated it more done. otherwise, still a favorite spot! read more

I was on the East Side with 15 minutes to find the perfect take-away lunch. I don't want tacos. I don't want a 30 minute wait at Primizie. I want pizza and I want it now. East Side Pies nestles comfortably on a corner of Rosewood and the tiny establishment took me by surprise the first time I walked inside. You are immediately confronted with your pizza choices for the day to your left and to your right, well, the kitchen. The warm slices were still bubbling with warmth and above the glass case rested a trio of saran-wrapped desserts and a medley of beverages. I'm a simple girl - easy to please. Give me two slices of cheese and a blondie brownie. Oh. My. Gosh. The thin crusted pizza hit the spot. Affordable, delicious, messy, goodness. And yes, I did the napkin dab to rid myself of the excess grease. Be prepared, these things drip. The brownie was alright. The saran wrap was moist from something, which was weird, but I enjoyed the treat. I found the staff to be helpful and friendly - and I look forward to returning. Eastside pies looks a bit dumpy from the outside, but it's definitely worth checking out. The pizza is thin crust and really tasty. They sell about six different types of pizza by the slice and make cool custom pies. The down side is there is no indoor seating. You're outside on old wooden chairs with no air conditioning. Returned for second time during a Friday afternoon lunch break . . . I left disappointed with a cold lunch. After waiting 15 minutes for one of their calzone-like thingies (to be heated, not made), I went in and just asked for one out of the case. One polite, sympathetic worker recognized my nonexistent lunch was their fault while another suggested my inattention resulted in it being swiped. Icing on the cake: while I was inside, a cook announced: "Hey, uh, let's be sure we're getting the orders in the right order . . ." What a concept! The pizza took way too long to get ready. The pizza was alright, but overall, I don't recommend it.

I've only ever had their pizza by the slice so I can't really vouch for some of the more fanciful pies on the menu. But going by the standard pepperoni as a barometer, East Side Pies is legit New York style pizza at its best. The crust is super thin, crunchy around the edge and pliable in the middle - just thin enough to fold like a real pizza should, but not too thin to become soggy. The various toppings are creative and diverse, including things you probably never expected to see on a pizza - like curry, jerk chicken, and peaches (Fredericksburg of course). But even if you're just in the mood for something simple and classic like pepperoni or cheese, you really can't go wrong. The patio is a great place to relax and people-watch, Or if you're looking to kill some serious time, one of the best record shops in Austin (Trailer Space) is right next door. read more
