The German potato salad and split pea soup was fine, but just that. Fine. My coke was flat. Our server was nice and we had no complaints about him. The head hostess was very rude. The saving grace was their dessert, which was the only thing that felt worth paying the prices we did for the food we got. We probably wouldn't go back. read more

Awesome place to take the family. We have four kids and they all loved it too. Their live music was perfect for the atmosphere. He even came over to the table engaging with us, and let the kids touch/play the accordion. They did it well so the kids thought it was cool, without being shocked with embarrassment. Schweinshaxe schmeckt sehr gut! Hope im saying that right. Schweinshaxe (pork knuckles/ham hocks)...3 pounds of juicey meat and the best part is the crispy skin with that good fat layer under it. When the waitress brought it out the patio went silent. All eyes on the prize, my prize all mine! Späetzle (german noodles) was good really good wasnt too eggy or wet, it tasted homemade. Rotkohl (red cabbage) was spot on! It wasnt overly sweet, i hate overly sweet red cabbage its not a god damn dessert you need a good sour balance. I liked the potato salad too...germans make it without nasty mayo and we add them bacon bits too. I didnt try any beers unfortunately:( i had the apple strudel for dessert it was good. The waitress was very nice. She helped me wrap my food because my right wrist was in a cast and i was riding the struggle bus so hard with my left hand. She was very nice, i like when waitresses and waiters dont check up on me every second. I'd totally go back! I wish their dessert menu included German desserts like Bienenstich or pflaumenkuchen but my son loved their cheese cake and everything they had. I pray they never take off the schweinshaxe its one of my favorite things and i don't see it on german restaurants a lot probably cuz its a pain in the ass to cook but its worth it. Recently did delivery from Edelweiss. I've got to say, being of Austrian descent I was skeptical. The amount of food we got was like WOW! We were stuffed! My husband thought I'd ordered extra. Nooooo! I didn't! Edelweiss just serves a lot of quality food. I ordered the Austrian Weinerschnitzel with potatoes and spatzle. OMG! The schnitzel was SO good! My husband had the sauerbraten and he too said it was as good as what my Mom makes for us on Christmas. Those are some big words!! He also had the spatzle and red cabbage. Both meals came with soup of the day. Our food was sent to us with traditional rye bread on the side and the containers were heavy duty, the kind you'd wash and keep for leftovers. The food was great! The atmosphere was fun and festive. But The owner made me feel uncomfortable. They were short staffed and he brought my family's food. When he brought our food he made a racial comment. I am full-blooded Native American. My husband and children are German and Swedish. When the owner gave me my food he said "Any left overs you can put them in tacos tomorrow"... It wasn't so much what he said but how he said it. So my recommendation for this restaurant is if you are a person of color and not a worker at the restaurant I'd give it a second thought and go to a more welcoming place. read more

Visited this restaurant more than once, after reading this 1 Star reviews i can definitely say that the food they served me was excellent the restaurant was clean and the service was superb I ordered the famous duck And can definitely say that The chef knows what he does. The duck was perfectly cooked and the side dishes as well If I could, I would give this restaurant 10 stars because it keeps the tradition of German cooking a live and the stuff really take cares of the customers, you feel more like a family member as a customer. Visited Edelweiss 6/4/23 Sunday at about 6pm. Moved from the area a few years ago and this was our first time back. It did not disappoint. They have entertainment on Saturday and Sunday, inside and outside. Great for children and adults. Our group of 4 each had different schnitzel dishes. They come with to sides and a soup or salad. We all were delighted by the food and attention. Great selection of German, European beer and beverages. Do not miss the pretzel appetizer. Comes with 2 dipping sauces. My mom made her first visit to Chicago and we took her here. She absolutely loved it and said it was her favorite thing about the weekend...this over the Signature Room for brunch! The food is delicious, the atmosphere welcoming but the service and people at Edelweiss are HANDS DOWN the best of the best around Chicago! Coming here is like going to a friends house...I think it actually gets better and better every time you stop by! Live music was played and the 2 men performing on 4/13 were so fun and talented! We shared the pretzel and potato pancakes (5 star). I had the fish and fries special, my mom the goulash and cabbage side and fiance the schnitzel salad that was to die for! All dishes were excellent-not one complaint! For late in a Saturday night the bathrooms were even spotless...good luck getting better than that! read more

First visit to Edelweiss, unfortunately the evening ended on a sour note. The vegetable of the day, per the waitress, was Brussel Sprouts. Order was placed to include sprouts. Dinner arrived and the sprouts were black on most, actually burnt. Requested a new order. Waitress did so and came back to tell me she was told that is how the sprouts are cooked. Requested a manager and ERIC, a chef appeared (couldn't get a last name as waitress said no one employed there knows last names). ERIC was very arrogant and condescending. Told me they were roasted spouts and that they were just fine. He picked one up to expose the core and inner leaves, which wasn't the point. The entire spout tasted burnt no matter what the inside looked like. The entirety of the Brussel Spout is edible and to be enjoyed. ERIC didn't want to provide good customer service and simply do the right thing and replace the order. I would think Edelweiss would want satisfied customers thereby gaining new customers and quite possibly others. read more

I recently dined at Edelweiss on a frigid and icy Saturday evening, but the mood inside was considerably warmer. There is a free parking lot adjacent to the restaurant, located in the embedded - within - Chicago suburb of Norridge. Upon entering there is a pleasant bar area. Past that are the main dining areas, and my date and I scored cozy booth seating surrounded by all things German (renderings of German cities, beer mugs, etc.). The pleasant team of servers kept things moving along - bread basket, terrific German beers, soup, potato pancakes with applesauce and sour cream. We ordered the Edelweiss Platter, which is a treasure trove of German foods (bratwurst, pork schnitzel, roast pork, beef rouladen, spatzle, sauerkraut, red cabbage, German potatoes, mustard and horseradish - did I miss anything?). We topped things off with a dessert crepe filled with cinnamon ice cream, and embellished with whipped cream, chocolate sauce and bits of strawberries. Very tasty and hearty fare! To add to the ambiance, there was a small stage with an accordionist playing lively drinking songs. An adorable and sharply dressed elderly couple was celebrating a birthday by dancing to the German music, showing swingin' moves that I could only dream of possessing. Prost! read more

The food was good and our waitress, I was very disappointed on where they sat us. We were a family of 6 and I specifically said no booth. They said they only have tables, however we were put in a booth that only sat on the inside and one at the end. I was in the corner on an angle due to not enough room, my back was so sore and the seat was very uncomfotable. Was not happy. We went for my bday, I will not go back because of this. If you can't listen to simple instructions on what seating we prefer I won't go back.they were also very quick to remove the plates as soon as we were done almost to the point of feeling rushed out of there. read more

This is the BEST PLACE IN THE CHICAGO LAND AREA! From the moment you pull into the parking lot, the nostalgia is strong and heavy. It pulls you in and then once you're in, the staff makes you feel like you have come home to a wonderful and heavenly experience. Josephine is always our waitress. She treats us like her "girls" as she likes to call us. It's like visiting a very loving relative. No on with the food. The very first time, we saw the soft bavarian pretzel on the menu and thought ok, great appetizer. You have NO idea how amazing not only that the pretzel is (without too much salt). They serve the pretzel with a beer cheese that has a little kick and the honey mustard is mouth watering! We have had the German burger. Great meat and roll! NOW THE DESSERTS should have their own 5 stars. We thought their German Chocolate Cake was so good and had no idea what we were missing in ordering the Black Forest cake. You MUST go here and at least get yourself one of these desserts. Don't make plans after going here AND only on special occasions. The carb count is HIGH but I will deal with it. It's so worth it. We choose a new location for a family Christmas dinner each year. This year we chose Edelweiss Restaurant because it supposedly has great decorations. Not only were the decorations beautiful but a lovely surprise on a Sunday afternoon in the Christmas season was entertainment! Gabe sang American and German Christmas carols! The German food is excellent, as are the cocktails and appetizers, and the menu offers American fare for those not brave enough to try something different. We have been wanting German food for a while and decided to give this a try. The restaurant definitely gives you a German feel when you arrive. Nice little outdoor beer garden if it's nice out. Nice selection of German beers on draft. I ordered the four beer flight. It was good but the server didn't tell me what beer was what. Other than that the server was very nice and did a good job. We were disappointed with the food however. We ordered the pretzel and it was big and good. Perfect to share for a few people. The entrees were the most disappointing part. The best item was the veal schnitzel and the red cabbage. Good amount of food and cooked perfect. The house special Sweinhaxe was big but the skin was not crispy at all. The crispy skin on this dish is what makes it good. The duck was also not crispy and not the best. The Rouladen was nice and tender and did taste good. We didn't order dessert so I don't know how that is. Overall the server was very nice, beer was good but the food disappointed and the entrees are not cheap. Most entrees are $26-$36 so not cheap when the food is just ok. Probably wont come back here to eat. Came to this restaurant on a Saturday night for girls night out. Food was great as always. We usually pick this place for girls night being it's centrally located for all 5 of us. This last time we went in we experienced something that we have never experienced before. We were approached by who we think is the new manager who thinks he's Mr. Casanova. He is triple all of our ages and made us feel real uncomfortable. To the point that we will NOT be going there for girls night as long as he is working. We went here for lunch today. The food , as usual, was great, as was the service and the decor. It was all decked out for Christmas. My only gripe was that the holiday music playing was a pop Christmas channel, where whiny young women sang songs we never heard of. There is so much beautiful German Christmas music and also classic Christmas music that would fit the atmosphere more. I am guessing the clientele (like me) a over 50 and traditional music makes things much cozier. Other than that it was a pleasant lunch. The bar is the place to be- can't beat the bar specials or the friendly bartenders. Live German music on some nights always adds to aesthetic. I love good German food because it's filling, tasty, comforting, and always goes good with beer. I guess you could make the same claim for wings and pizza too come to think of it. I refined my appreciation for German cuisine by working for many years for a German company and traveling extensively throughout Germany. So it's always a joy to find a good source for spaetzle, schnitzel and potato pancakes. We've driven by here many times and thought we'd give it a try. The space is deceiving from the outside cause it's huge indoors. Suitable for banquets even. In fact there was one underway at 2:00 on a Wednesday afternoon when we stopped in. That really had a detrimental impact on service cause they either didn't staff for that or more people showed up than they expected. So it was slow in every way. Perhaps the food would redeem the experience . Well, it didn't quite do that. My schwein schnitzel was dry and uninspiring and was only salvaged by the waitress suggesting I might like to add some of the hunter's sauce that was served with my wife's Jäger schnitzel. Her dish was really good. So I'm thinking I ordered improperly. I think I'll go with the sauerbraten next time. I'm also not gonna hold the service issue against them this time. So given the space, German beer selection, and extensive German food options I think this is a solid 3 stars! read more
