This diner is so good. I go about once every three months or so, pretty much every chance I get when I go home to visit family. I used to only get the veggie hash add avocado and goat cheese with rye toast, but have branched out occasionally. It's always good and if a special sounds good to you, tryyyyy it, I love how they use specials to be creative and experiment! Omelets are generally my least favorite egg preparation because it's always overcooked, but my goddess I want their chef to give me an omelet lesson! The date and goat cheese omelet I had today was perfectly cooked, fluffy, moist, salty, sweet, spicy, and creamy. Normally it is the bacon/goat cheese/date omelet, but I subbed out the bacon for jalepenos. The coffee has improved since they got a bunch of fancy equipment. That's it - that is the only negative thing I can say, and it is because I am a crab-ass before noon. This tiny counter diner is completely unassuming, and without the recommendation of an Edgebrook resident, I never would have ventured in here. I had to try their signature dishes: Corned Beef Hash and the Buddycakes. The corned beef was phenomenal. You could easily tell it was made in-house and it was super tender. I was super excited to try the Buddyycakes as it's supposed to be one of their popular dishes but unfortunately it didn't live up to the hype. It was pretty dry. So this was one of my favorite spot's. Until today. I come in and order my usual that they been making for months. 3eggs over easy with two orders sausage links and wheat toast with potatoes and mushrooms. Also 4shots espresso. My order comes after 25-30 minutes. The owner is cooking. It's two eggs over hard so I let one of the counter workers know I need the other egg and I'm going to wait for it before I eat. I didn't want to say anything about the over cooked eggs. Just wait for the third. No big deal. So the owner brings it too me I say thanks. I had been keeping busy waiting with paying bills online so never really looked under the eggs n sausage. I cut up my food. As I finish cutting I start to see green peppers. I despise green peppers. I pick the two out that I first noticed but than move everything to find that it's all green peppers. He made it with peppers instead of mushrooms. So I let the waitress know who is a total sweetheart. So I can't eat it and want it fresh. Picking peppers out of something cooked with them is not an option. Everything tastes like them when cooked together. I despise them! So the owner freaks out and shouts at me across the whole restaurant and everyone stops eating or talking as he shouts at me like I'm a bum or something. I'm pretty regular here and we've all gotten along awesome but today I'm apparently a second class citizen and got shouted at like I'm a bum. I've been here literally dozens of times at no less than 25-35 bucks a pop for higher priced breakfast and happy for it. But today I was shouted at like I was indigent and begging. If we were at the bar without families present it would have ended much differently I promise. So eventually he agrees to remake it. I wait another 20 minutes. It comes 2eggs one order sausage. Not what I ordered. I told the waitress it's not her fault. She's horrified. She charged me for what came. I ate it. I left. I'm never going there again. This place is teeny tiny--maybe four two-tops along the wall and about 20 seats along the counter. But it's charming in a divey sort of way. I ordered a simple breakfast, since I had already eaten a bit earlier. The eggs were cooked perfectly but under-seasoned. Everything else was good. The coffee was surprisingly great. Service was a little scattered. I felt bad for the one waitress who was trying to get to everyone. I could tell she was overwhelmed, but she was still so upbeat and friendly. The first time I came here I was floored by how friendly the service was and how yummy my meal was. The few times that followed left something to be desired. I would say the staff is consistently good, but the food can be inconsistent. It's a diner so don't expect comfortable seating or a lot of space. Once I made the mistake of ordering breakfast after lunch had started and my pancakes tasted a bit like burgers and onions. Another time my hash browns were more black than brown. This is a great neighborhood diner! First off, its mainly counter seating and it's small. Personally, I enjoy sitting at the counter, I feel like it's old school and fun to interact with the waitress and other dining patrons. I recently went with my four children and wife. Upon entering, other diners graciously moved down so that my family of six could grab seats together. (without even being asked) The waitress was very sweet and interacted well with the kids. We ordered the chicken chorizo hash, pulled pork hash, corn cakes, and marshmallow/chocolate chip pancakes. Both hashes were really delicious. The hashbrowns and meats are homemade. We did order a side of sausage and the waitress asked if it was for the kids, I told her yes, and she let me know that it was also homemade and sometimes kids did not like it. I ordered it anyway and I thought it was really good, but she was right, the kids didn't like it. The pancakes were huge. One order filled up 3 kids. The corncakes were covered in a fruit salsa which was good but the cakes themselves were not sweet enough for the kids. My wife however enjoyed them. He cured his own pork and smoked this bacon.... Okay, what else would expect for a guy named Cranky Chris, right? It's not over... any ole Joe can smoke some meat, right? (I know; me either) So, it turns out that Mr. Cranky over there adds some special seasoning in the making-of-the-bacon process... Special seasoning? What seasoning? (you know- right?) This freakin guy makes his own seasoning... Cranky Chef Chris makes seasoning called Cranky Chef seasoning. The bacon was awesome! If you have not been there lately, go there before it too late! If you're at that SB on say a Saturday or Sunday evening, look for the 20-something redhead barista, Mary. She's the best barista in the world in the best Starbucks in the world. But enough about that, let's talk Edgebrook Coffee Shop. "There is no ambience" is like saying there is no vacuum in outer space. The place OOZES ambience, but that's not why I think it's one of, if not the best weekend breakfast joints in the entire state. The menu is standard at first glance, but when the food arrives it kind of punches you in the face with the fact that every single item on that "standard" menu is crafted to be the very best that it can. Personally, I like the smoked sausage hash; it's a mixture of some very high-end sausage, FRESH vegetable ingredients, perfectly cooked potatoes, and two eggs cooked to order (I go for over-easy, I like some egg yolk on my food). I've ordered this dish dozens of times, and the consistency with which it is delivered and the quality of the food is what keeps me coming back. They also have a "special" menu written on a chalkboard, and I've occasionally ordered from it. Let me just say that I've not only never been disappointed with a selection, I've overwhelmingly been impressed with each and every meal. I have not once left the place feeling like I should have gone elsewhere; conversely, I have left the place every single time thanking GOD that I chose the Edgebrook Coffee Shop as the place to eat that morning. The owner is around my age and shares my musical tastes. he has great music playing, there are two flat screen TVs with alternating Jeff Beck concerts and such and the news of the day. Very agreeable. His kids are obviously working the counter, and while as teens they'd almost certainly rather do something else at the moment, you never get the feeling that you're being short-shrifted. They're more than adequate, they kick butt and take numbers. He has a cook or two working the grills and he either watches them plate the finished meals or he plates them himself. There is NO GREASE IN THE AIR. It's immaculately clean and a very fresh feeling environment. It's really the very best place to eat breakfast on a Saturday or Sunday morning. I'm sure if you live in Logan Square or a fake neighborhood like Bucktown you have your fave spots, but for me, being about a mile away, I wouldn't go anywhere else other than the Edgebrook Coffee Shop. read more

I tried it 5 years ago, and have been hooked since! It has your classic diner breakfasts, but also more exotic fare, like a goat cheese and Majool date omelette--where else will you find that? My go-to dish is a chicken chorizo and poblano veggie mix HASH; where the ingredient are mixed-in with the hash-brown potatoes, not scrambled into the eggs. The chicken chorizo is made in-house, and is not greasy like the typical pork chorizo. Chris, the Owner and Chef, weekly dreams up new dishes as "Specials", and I always try these new combinations that are dishes I have never heard of before--I'm never disappointed! It has a long, "L" shaped counter seating, and a few cafe tables, but can go from 5 patrons to full in the space of 5 minutes, but no time seems to be consistantly the "best" time to arrive. Very friendly and knowledgable staff. I drive from the lake-front several times a week. read more

Fantastic servers and fantastic food! The best steak and eggs I've ever had. The steak was juicy and tender and full of flavor. I'm usually a medium rare kind of person but given it's early, I ordered medium. Medium was just perfect - I would recommend it. My friend ordered the hash special with chicken fajita which he very much enjoyed as well. Overall, the portions and price served eachother well. I will be back when I visit Chicago again. read more

This place was not good. No ambiance at all. It was a diner set up with the grease so exposed I felt like I was getting Coates by sitting there. The best part... it bills itself as a coffee shop. I asked for a latte and the guy says "this is a coffee shop pal. We serve coffee only"... And he wore that fact like a badge. He's just too proud and too far gone. There was also no music and the conversation the guy was having was loud. I felt like I was in his living room. Idk. It was not a good impression. For all around good breakfast this is the place to go. Its small and the staff is friendly. The food comes out a little slow but its good and hot when you get it. I think one of my favorite dishes is the Chilaquiles. I have tried them all over the city and this is my favorite spot to grab a plate. Their pancakes are delicious! When my wife and I moved into the neighborhood a couple a months ago from out of state, this was exactly the kind of place we were hoping to have in the neighborhood we moved into. Excellent variety of breakfast options on the menu, plus there are always a number of specials to pick from. My wife is a vegetarian, and one of the problems she always runs into is having to order the same things over and over again. She enjoys the Edgebrook coffee shop because she can always pick different things to order. To be honest I wasn't sold when we drove by and it's very small inside, but the laid back atmosphere and great food make it a new go to place.
