I had a bad experience but the owner handled it beautifully. No complaints there. However, I'm now being ghosted by the "ego" stylist who I should have seen in the first place. Even asked her for a fresh start. Don't let my experience ruin yours. The shop is clean and they are friendly. Not sure what happened. Oh well, life goes on. This salon is in a beautiful spot in Dana Point/Laguna Niguel. I love a great salon experience. This was not one. In fact I am so disappointed. I took my daughter in for a blow out and style to get ready for homecoming! We frequent the Dry Bar which I love but they were booked for the day! I tried this salon hoping that they could at least compare. We are terribly disappointed. When we arrived we expressed that we wanted a blow out and tight curls knowing that the rainy weather would cause them to fall a little by the evening. Our stylist said (and I quote) I am not going to spend an hour and half tightly curling your hair but I can show you how to touch up. We said, we know we may have to touch up but she would still like tighter curls. This was for her first homecoming dance! They stylist blow Dryed and curled her hair loosely and then proceeded to pull and shake out the curls and tell me how I could touch it up later. I asked my daughter if she was happy and she just got up to go to the car. She was so disappointed, she didn't even want to be in the salon any longer. I went to pay and it was $65. A typical Amazing Blow Out at a blow dry bar is $45. I should have asked more questions. When I got to the car my 14 year old was so disappointed because this is her first homecoming and her hair was practically straight! I tried to talk her into going back in but she wouldn't. She curled her hair tightly in 20 min when we got home. Literally had to redo the entire thing. When I called the salon I spoke to Jennifer. She was very nice. She offered to refund me $20. I actually don't think that is sufficient at all for basically walking away with a wash and dry and having restyle my daughters hair before her dance. I was grateful but she is still supposed to call me back. I haven't heard from her yet about the refund. I've waited a few hours. When she does call, I will add to this review and let you know. Hopefully this salon will realize that they did not provide a good product and do something to make up for it. I'm highly disappointed with our service and especially frustrated by the high cost. Having my daughters hair cut doesn't even cost me that much. A blow out at the Dry Bar is peaceful, does everything you want and even offers you a drink. We got none of this treatment here. Sorry for the long post but I rarely am so frustrated and it takes a lot for me to leave a negative review. If Ego Salon monitors these posts, I'd love for you to reach out to me and refund more than $20 of what I spent. Below is an image of my daughters hair as she is redoing and adding curl. I cannot rate this salon for the very poor services and rudeness of the manager. I will give it a one star because of the receptionist. My daughter had a cut, hair coloring and styling. Absolutely HORIBBLE UNEVEN haircut. The stylist with over forty years experience I am told) admitted to being "rushed" and did not check my daughter's hair to assure both sides were even. I was also told because the hair was styled, the stylist didn't notice the hair was not even on both sides by almost two inches. In fairness, I called and spoke to the receptionist, who was lovely. I was issued an $70 credit. The cost to repair the uneven hair cut was another $70. I then asked for a full credit of the $240 my daughter's hair was almost two inches short on one side, the cost of the repair and the time spend to find another salon.( which will receive a 5 star rating) I was asked to send a picture, and did. I received a rude call today, stating a "courtesy" refund was issued. The owner or supervisor then had the audacity to say the cut did not happen at his salon. Stephanie Nguyen - she is a perfectionist with everything she does! I've been going to her for several years and although I stray away and think I can find someone better, I just never do. My hair is fine, has a slight wave and all sorts of cowlicks. It's tempermental but Stephanie knows how to tame it. Plus her color lasts forever! I've gotten lots of compliments on my hair and since my hair isn't that great to start with, that's saying a lot. It's a fun salon to go to and they have some neat jewelry too which I've bought on occasion. Stephanie really takes pride in her work - very detail oriented and funny too. read more

I had a little time to kill between my last business meeting and dinner. I saw the shopping plaza and hoped for a hair salon as I noticed my ends were frayed beyond reasonable comprehension (always needing scissors to comb through a knot). I have hair well past my shoulders and all I wanted was a trim and I needed it to be find in 45 min. The receptionist balked at first but the hairdresser (Farri, I might have the incorrect spelling but she is a petite blonde from Colombia) said "no problem". We cut off 3.5" and she face framed the front. Fantastic wash, dry and style in definitely less than 45 min. It was bit more than I wanted to spend but the service and results in such last minute were worth it. Definitely recommend. I would go back. read more

I am 49 and have tried my whole life to find someone to do my hair. I am of Jamaican/black/etc. etc. heritage and have baby fine curly hair . I've been to many stylists in the past who have tried to press it (burned my hair), relax it (my hair fell out) or blow dry it (I ended up with a straw afro). I gave up and just started trimming it myself. I really didn't think about trying to find someone in South County because there are maybe 3 people here that look like me! After getting a significant promotion I decided to try again. I tried Ego Salon because it was near my house. Phong was assigned to do my cut. I came in prepared to give him my whole genetic history to explain my curious locks, but he never flinched. Over the next hour he washed, trimmed and blow dried my hair on low heat (what???). HE NEVER USED A CURING OR FLAT IRON!!! He achieved a slight curl that was so soft and smooth. I thought this was a fluke, but no, he's done it every time I've come in. I still don't believe how wonderful his technique is. After talking with him over time I have come to understand he is an artist...he truly understands hair... he is the hair wisperer and I look forward to coming in to see him work his magic every chance I get. read more

Worst haircut, next to the one I gave myself when I was eight years old. I asked for a senior stylist and they assured me that all of their stylist and colorist have been trained and working for numerous years. Let's just say I had to stop my stylist from cutting deeper in to my front layers to avoid me looking like I had a full on asymmetrical haircut. I've never had to just stop a haircut to avoid more damage. I felt bad because it was pandemic so I still tipped her and paid 50% of my haircut with the intention of returning to have it fixed by another stylist but let's face it - once your hair is butchered it's hard to regain trust. I ended up finding someone else who was absolutely amazing and fixed my hair enough to allow it to grow out looking normal. Not to mention the name of the salon is awful. I should've known from the beginning. If you want an amazing cut and color I highly recommend a place called the modest Spot- another 15 minutes south of here. Schedule with the owner Stephanie she will change your life! The irony of both of these salon names is hilarious but take my advice if you want an amazing haircut. read more

Recently, she took me from a long hairstyle to a fun, sassy a-line bob. I get compliments on it from perfect strangers all the time! Philip is THE BEST stylist! My daughter and myself both have very curly hair, and he absolutely understands how to cut curly hair to either wear it curly or blow it out straight with fantastic results! My other daughter has very straight hair, and he does an excellent job with her needs as well. I've had Philip also perform color and glazing services, and conditioning services as well, always with excellent results. The salon in general seems to be kept very clean, and they have a lot of products to choose from. They tend to be a bit pricey on their products, but they have a great selection. I have only been here to see Lina for my eyebrows so I can't speak about any other services. But I can tell you that the staff is friendly and the owner always says hi. Lina does a great job at giving my brows a polished look with minimal pain during the wax application. She takes her time so you don't feel rushed. Instead you feel like she cares about her work and gives you enough attention. Her professionalism keeps me coming back and it's reasonably priced as well. read more

I have recently moved to Red Bank, New Jersey and am realizing how hard it is to find a good hairdresser. I hope this helps someone who is in need of one. Carl has been my hairdresser for a long time at least 5 years until I moved to Jersey, he's amazing. If you need a great cut, color highlight, go to Carl and if you want an amazing Bob, go to Carl, I never even had to tell Carl what I wanted; I always left looking amazing! Terrible terrible terrible. We walked in and Carl was the only one available to cut my brothers hair. Which was fine. Ladies at the front desk were sweet and polite( the only reason why I selected one star). However, Carl honestly did not know how to cut men's hair. AT ALL. He took a very long time. And wasn't able to shape or trim his eye brows properly. ALSO, upon finishing I asked politely if he could trim the back a little shorter for him because it looked REALLY uneven. I couldn't believe he was going to leave it LIKE THAT. He looked so insulted that I asked him politely to cut it shorter. He even said "okay. Do you want to do it yourself" and tried to hand me the razor. I was so shocked. I politely said "I wasn't trying to be rude with asking if you could cut it shorter...it's just we want to be happy with this hair cut" and he just kept shaking his head as if I was the rudest and most appalling person on earth. We left the salon very unsatisfied. His eye brows were still not shaped and his hair was still really long and not up to par. $40 wasted. I regret leaving Carl an $8 tip, but I'm not that heartless. However I'm SOOO DISSAPOINTED and ANGRY, I mentioned it to the ladies at the front desk and they apologized...No professional stylist should ever treat a paying client like that, especially if the client is politely asking for a better product. read more

I have been going to Ego Salon (mostly at the old Mission Viejo location) on and off for nearly a decade. I have since moved from Orange County, but still try and make my way to see Jessica when I can. She can do anything with my hair and I always feel hot when I leave the salon. I once told her I wanted something similar to "Victoria's Secret" hair for Halloween, and she somehow got it. Granted, I can't recreate the look myself very well, but at least I feel great for a day. I really have tried looking for a stylist closer to me as I don't live near the area anymore, but I just can't seem to find someone to replace Jessica. read more

I was in the area and just happen to wander in and was recommended to Linda for a perm~ yes, a perm. Linda quickly renamed it as a retro wave. Nice. The experience at the salon was very nice although I had hoped that the "wave" would last until my daughters wedding 8 weeks later there was no wave for the event. The cut was FAB! Just got my second perm here a few days ago with LINDA H. She really is amazing in that she focused completely on me and my hair and never got distracted with other people or other things going on in the salon. I have been going to Jayne for years for my color and extensions. I actually used to be a hairdresser so I am extremely picky and she not only meets but exceeds my expectations. She does such a great job on my hair that people are shocked when I tell them that I am not a natural blonde and I have great lengths extensions. I always feel fabulous when I leave! She is also sweet as she could be and really cares about her customers being happy. Maybe he was just having a bad day, but Mayer gave me the worst haircut I've ever gotten in over 50 years of salon cuts. Not sure he was really listening or paying attention, but my usually very manageable hair looked terrible when I walked out and it only went downhill from there. I went back a couple days later hoping for a little improvement, and all I got was chunks cut out. Now over a month later, it still looks awful. It doesn't matter how I try to style it, it just looks like I stuck my head in the garbage disposal. I have NEVER complained before, but I paid more than I ever have for a cut and it's just the worst. read more

Talk about a complete disappointment. Called to make an appointment, explained to the lady that I needed my daughter's hair washed, blow, and straightened. She told us to come in at 3pm, which we did. We then waited 20 minutes for the stylist Linda to come and talk to us Which I was told she had double booked a deep conditioner client in between my daughter. How can you do two clients when my daughter requires your full attention. It's not like she is getting color and will need time to process. Anyways Linda finally comes to talk to us, she tells us that she only booked 30 minutes for my daughter's hair and she didn't have enough time. How can you wash, dry, and straighten in 30 minute. The receptionist then tries to tell me I never told her that I needed her hair straightened. Really your just going to wash it and blow dry but not style, come on. I asked for a manager they claimed there was none. We had to leave cause they wouldn't do her hair and Linda insulted my daughter. It was the worst customer service I have ever experienced read more

Very nice salon! Vicky cut my hair and I came back a week later for color. Vicky is great at what she does- you really should have seen my hair when I walked in; it was not ok and she made it look great! I also like that you can buy the products right there. They use only top line products and it has made a difference on my hair for sure. Not only is Vicky very talented at what she does, she is super friendly. I have resistant gray hair and every time he has done my hair the color is perfect and he can blow dry/style hair better than anyone I've ever seen. He has done my hair for 20 plus years. The woman behind the front desk, with the British accent (I believe her name is Kim), is the number one reason I will never return to this salon. I've been here three times, twice for a cut and once to have my hair done prior to a wedding. While the stylists seem nice and friendly, I just could not get past the attitude of the woman answering the phones / behind the front desk. She is condescending and rude and as un-accomodating as they come. I suspect she is the one who named it "ego salon" or she didn't get the memo that working at ego salon does not have to require that you, too, come to work each day with your ego. It's crazy how one person can have an impact on your overall experience. She's a smart ass and until someone gets the balls to fire her, I will be taking my business elsewhere and telling all my friends to do the same. read more

My mom and I have been going to Ego for years! All of the stylist here are highly trained and experts in what they do. What I appreciate most about Ego is their ability to listen to what it is your looking for as well as adding their own professional and unique style (as opposed to the trendy corporate companies like toni&guy whose clients all seem to have the same exact look!). The decor of the salon is very intimate and cozy, which is also reflected on the friendly and welcoming front desk staff and stylists.
