So. Great. We had drinks and a bite to eat here with a friend on a weeknight, and had a great time! The drink menu is unique and full of creativity with classic spirits - be sure to try the Branchwater. I was not sure of it until I tried it...and now I think that's the only thing I want to drink there. There is a taco truck there during the week, and it's GOOD. Like, don't just get chips and salsa-good, but splurge on the guac (YUM) and a taco Good! Let me start off by saying that in fairness, I would give Eighth Row 3.5 stars if it were possible, maybe even 3.75, because it is definitely better than a 3, but not quite a 4 either. That being said, while the ambiance is very nice, the food great, and the HH very respectable, the service has been SLOOOOW each time I've visited, regardless of how crowded it was, and the cocktails could use some work. My last visit was yesterday. It's not far from me and the weather was lovely, so I decided to walk down there with my dog and meet a mate for HH. The place was practically empty, and my poor dog was thirsty after the walk, but at least three servers walked past me, multiple times, before my presence was even acknowledged. I basically sat there like some lonely wanker for two full songs before someone finally came by and took my order. However, once I got my tab started, the wait staff was attentive and I didn't have to sit around with an empty drink even once. But there were also only like 15 people there at the time... The HH is good. They have $5 Moscow Mules, Old Fashioneds, and Margaritas. I've tried them all, as well as a number of their "regular" cocktails, and they've all been way too sweet for my taste. Not bad tasting by any means, and totally acceptable at HH prices, but completely off the mark at regular cost. Downhouse has the same offerings, in addition to many others, at the same price during their HH, and taste wise, their mixes are vastly superior. Now if beer is your thing, you're in luck. They have an incredible selection, and during HH, a good variety are available for $3 a pop. No complaints there, and if all I ever drank was beer, this place would get an extra star. That brings us to the food. During HH, they have $3 tacos, and they are the true stars of the show, not to be missed even at regular prices. Equal kudos to their other culinary offerings. All in all, not bad, but then we come back to the service. When I got my tab, I noticed I was charged regular price for the HH margarita. I tried to get our waitress' attention numerous times to correct the error, but I might as well have been a ghost after she closed me out, cause she seemed to see right through me. Normally I wouldn't care, but that diabetes inducing 'rita was not worth $10. I would definitely come back, as the pros outweigh the cons by a good margin, and if shortcomings are remedied, I would happily bump up my score. read more

I really wanted to like this place but I didn't!! The only thing upscale about this place is the price. The rice tasted like it was from a box, the beans are canned and the tortillas are bought from a grocery store. They are also cooking your food in the back and not even inside the "restaurant." Hey look, another hipster-ish bar in the heights, go figure. This place seems to have a good selection of whiskey and has a nice set up. There is a big patio and then also the more normal bar area inside. There are plenty of places to sit your butt, but not so many places to park your car. The people watching is pretty good, and at least there was some all night happy hour special since it was Wednesday. Can't complain about a $5 drink at 9pm. The bar service was kind of awkward, yet an attempt to be good in that three people came by to take our drink orders; coordination clearly not a strong suit. I'm not much for bars and this one didn't impress me much. But hey, it wasn't horrible and the people watching was alright. Just don't fall off the stools that are connected to the bar... yeah, I saw that happen twice while I was there. read more

Cute place in the Heights. Huge menu with a variety of drinks, and definitely a good place for whiskey lovers. The food from the truck (or bus?) in the back was excellent and a great price. Pretty full inside and outside on a Saturday, with a big dog open patio. Also the valet staff was very personable. read more

They have individual, fully enclosed toilets but a shared sink with a glass door out to the pub. Can they please put a private sink in one of the toilets? Are they not aware it is common for many women and girls to have accidents on their period and need to wash both underwear and outer garment in the sink? They would have to do it in full view of the bar which is right outside the glass door. Please consider womens privacy & dignity when designing toilet spaces. read more

Not welcoming. We live in the neighborhood and were so excited about this bar. Been there 4 times in past 2 weeks. But not going back. Someone brought this huge hairy dog that was roaming all over the patio. I am highly allergic to dogs and asked the manager if there was something he could do. He was extremely condescending and unhelpful and basically told us he would rather have dogs there than us. So he will. read more

Went here for the first time for drinks. Loved the cocktails. They have really good summery cocktails. Are waitress was really nice and my fiancé told me to be sure and right that they played good music. They have some good outdoor seating, not too sunny just enough shade. Good spot to enjoy an early evening summer drink. read more

I have been super eager to check this place out! The concept really appealed to me (I mean, whiskey/bourbon and tacos? Yum). It was a gorgeous day out, and they have a pretty awesome and expansive patio. On a nice day, I would highly recommend it! They are also dog friendly which is great. Once seated we were greeted by our server pretty quickly. We needed some drink recommendations and he was super happy to help. I decided on the ranchwater, which was seriously delicious. Its a very almost salty/lime margarita, but it is not too sweet. It was to die for. My companion went for the eight row mule which he really liked as well! For food we went for tacos, as there really isnt much on the menu. About 6 taco choices and chips and queso or guac. We asked how big the tacos were, and were informed they were "bigger than street tacos". I ordered two, the brussel sprout taco and the beef cheek. Beef Cheek: very flavorful and really was great with the hot sauce added Brussel Sprout: The brussels were great, but the taco was totally taken over by large amounts of queso fresco. It was just ok. My only reason for not giving this place WAY more stars: -We were never given any type of napkins or silverware. We finally asked someone and they brought them a few minutes later. -Never given silverware: the tacos sort of fell apart in the one corn tortilla, so we basically just ate the fillings with our hands.. not really ideal. -The taco size is a street taco. 2 IMO is not enough for hungry people. Maybe if you filled up on chips and guac or queso, but just tacos.. left not full at all. The tacos range from 4-6 dollars, so that would be a pretty expensive meal for tacos. -Also asked for salt (hey, I like a little salt on my food) and I was told they didnt have any. Really? The quality of everything is really amazing.. it truly is a great place. I will be back, but a few things need to be worked out in terms of food and service. I've been meaning to try out Eight Row since I first saw them open awhile ago and finally did this past weekend. It's definitely a chill spot to hang out and grab some drinks and eat some tacos. Service: Our bartender was absolutely crap. Don't remember his name, but I don't really care to learn it either. Slowest service ever, and it wasn't even super busy. He was just too busy flirting with a group of girls seated at the bar next to where my friends and I were. I came to get a drink, not sass. Next time, try less sarcasm and condescension. We found seating at one of the indoor tables quite easily and Ashley started taking care of us. SHE IS WONDERFUL. An absolute angel who anticipated every need and checked up on my group of friends regularly. She brought out water for the table without us asking and napkins with our tacos. Will definitely seek her out next time I'm here. Drinks: they had 4 frozen drinks on top, the shandy, the frozen gin and tonic, the marg and the purple drank. We tried all but the shandy, and they were good and tasty. Had a mule and it tasted terrible. Bleh. Will stick to the frozen drinks next time. Food: you order tacos from them but its served from a taco truck on site. Ordered the brussels since everyone raved about them and just thought it was good not great. Too much charring for my taste. The queso was awesome though. Pricey for what you receive in terms of tacos though. read more

Actually I'd give this place 3.5 stars for now. Its a cool little set up built out from an old gas station, reminds me of a similar idea on lower Washington, but more open. Nice unisex bathrooms with a common wash area, probably the standard for all new builds. Good sized patio with a limited food options from their truck. Good bourbon/rye selection which includes some special house blends in casks (not all of them were in casks yet though). They also have a couple frozen drinks and some custom cocktails...on tap. I can't vouch for the quality of those, but haven't seen anyone complain. I liked the mini flights of bourbon & ryes, I think they were $9 for 3 half pours. On one occasion I had three of the house blends (full pours), which I enjoyed, but it was $57. The place is not cheap, but maybe that will keep the backwards hat crowd away. My complaint...the god-awful chairs at the bar. They are essentially wooden circles on a swing arm from the bar. Getting on and off of the chairs would not be the easiest thing to do after a few cocktails. I noted that I was not the only one struggling with this endeavor. Let alone the arm is a fixed distance from the bar, so if you are larger than 6'0", 200# it may be an uncomfortable fit, you will literally 'belly up to the bar'. If I'm going to spend north of $60 for three drinks I better have a comfortable chair. Fix that to get another star. read more

OK, here is my seemingly semi weekly update...I feel they are going through some growing pains which they are probably not over with. Though my latest visit was fantastic. Service was spot one, no valet and not over crowded. They have come down on their pricing for many bourbons, which is one of the single biggest concerns for me. More on that in a sec... Tacos are still fantastic, even if a bit pricy they are very much worth it. They do have a few whiskeys on tap now, though I was not blown away by them. They have a special Eagle Rare, which was great as all Eagle Rare is, but I did not find anything particularly different than the regular bottle. That being said, the price was $11, which is very much in line with regular Eagle Rare to begin with. The same can be said about many of the Bourbons. Mix the pricing with the spot on service I received, great tacos, a very well selected beer list, and this will once again be on my short list of bars in the Heights. I don't see this as becoming as schizophrenic a bar as some in the immediate area have been, and hope this is the last update a will write (unless it is for a five star review). I am very happy this spot has worked out some kinks in a very short time span. read more

I've been a few times and we get consistently bad service. I try to flag servers down and even if they make eye contact with me, most of the time they won't come to our table. Last night my friend waited on a tack she ordered for 40 minutes. Then she had to order it again because no one put the order in the first time. It is like a whiskey bar got into a steam/industrial kinda trend and did it in a classy way. I heard about this place in early November. I love the concept of a whiskey bar. The last couple places to open felt too complicated. What if I just wanted a nice neat glass of the good stuff? I don't want it all churched up and fancy sometimes you know? - Spacious patio with lots of room for seating and standing - A very very good selection and a few good cocktails that aren't of the weak variety. - The bathrooms are solid. Which is important. This isn't a college hangout...! - Tacos are good but seriously If you are there to eat you are doing it wrong. Grazing would be the way to go...Grazing on chips and guac or queso......or BOTH!!!! The stools are weird inside because they swing out from the table and I am overweight and feel weird sitting in them. This is the only issue I have. But, I am more than willing to stand. TIP: Try the flights...because a series of shots are not just shots but a tasting...and tastings are classy. Be Classy. read more

I would say I 100% agree with the review from Leslie T. The place is nice and all but way over priced. You can get the same selection elsewhere in the neighborhood or close enough at a lot less money. Their full shot of Basil Hayden bourbon was $14 and this was just a standard shot. Half shots are $8. I understand the need to mark up but I can get that same shot elsewhere for $8. Beers where also smaller than a full pint. Also bourbon list was almost all mass market brands. Only saw one craft distiller on their list. Did not see any locals like Yellow Rose. Staff was so so with at least 2 of the servers being short and inattentive. Had asked for a bourbon over ice and they never brought the ice after asking 3 times I had to go to get it myself. This happend on 3 more orders. Hopefully they will get the hit that the neighborhood does not appreciate overpriced drinks read more

I usually hesitate to review new places right away because they're usually still working out the kinks. But I'm pleased to report that ERF seems to have all the pieces in place already! My boyfriend and I went on a crowded Thursday night and the service, food, and drinks were all excellent and speedy. Sometimes places like this have terrible service where you're seemingly waiting forever for someone to come over (lookin' at you, Cottonwood...) but we were helped promptly. Additionally, throughout the evening waitstaff who weren't our waitress were checking in/removing dishes. If you're coming here looking for an expensive menu you're out of luck. It's mainly a bar with a few tacos and apps. But oh boy the tacos were delicious! The roasted chicken with guajillo was so tasty I'm still thinking about it! And my boyfriend really enjoyed the Brussels sprout taco. We both loved the chips and quest--they have those incredible made-in-house corn tortilla chips. We even got a bag to go they were so good. The cocktails were also top notch. We loved the "firewater" in particular--went down incredibly smooth. To top the night off they sent over a flan since it was my boyfriend's birthday and it too was to die for! All in all this place has a great atmosphere, quick service, smooth whiskey drinks, and really tasty tacos so if you're in the Heights you'd be silly not to stop by! read more

We've been waiting weeks for this spot to open and finally we drove by to see the lights on. The much talked about whiskey/bourbon list did not disappoint; their 6 page menu even goes into detail about the tasting notes of their barreled whiskey. They have servers and bar service so feel free to sit anywhere. The area inside is way bigger than it looks outside there's 20 or so tables lining the wall and plenty of standing room. Don't worry if you're not a whiskey nut, they have half shots, and flights available for your tasting pleasure and some excellent tequila cocktails too. We tried one of every taco and their queso. Queso was big enough for 3-4. Everything was really tasty and impressive considering it all comes from a food truck. As far as desserts go according to my flan hating boyfreind- "that's some damn good flan" as he ate half of mine. Looking forward to coming back and seeing everything in full swing. read more

I love coming to 8th Row Flint. Their frozen drinks are delicious. The staff is friendly (some more than others) and there has always been ample parking in the across the street lot. If you come, be sure to check out heir frozen Gin and Tonic or their Frozé! I absolutely love both. I tried their quesadilla tonight, it was a little too greasy for my liking. But their tacos are Delish! Plus you can never go wrong with queso and chips in the great ole state of Texas. I highly recommend this place. But be prepared to not have a table during busy times, but bar seating is fairly ample and the energy is generally high that you won't realize you are standing anyway. A go to place for me, check it out. read more

I thought the place was overpriced and parking was bad. The atmosphere seemed friendly but the building itself seems plain and lacks character in my opinion. Also, you have to give them your drivers license so that they can scan you into the system to be a member because of it being in the "dry part of the heights", which I know it exists and has been in place since 1912 but it just seems to me a hassle in order to enjoy a drink. As a final note, my wife didn't really care for the mixed gender area of the restroom. I didn't use the restroom while I was there so I don't have an opinion about it. read more

Last Friday was our second time here. This is a great spot. I love their cocktails, beers and tacos (not a huge bourbon fan)! The location is awesome, I really would like to love this place. But... They are under staffed. It was a Friday night and I only saw 2 waiters for the patio. It took the waitress forever to find us at our table. We ordered two beers, after 20 minutes she comes back with one beer and a whiskey..?? It took her another 10 minutes to get the other beer. She told us it was her 2nd day so, ok I'll give her some slack. Same with the tacos. It took a while for them to bring them over and I saw another server running around with our food on the patio. He had no clue where he had to deliver the food until he asked one of the two waitresses. Ok, so we order the second round of drinks at the bar. The bar clearly is under staffed as well. They were stressing, didn't look happy and the barlady was not so friendly... I'm guessing they need more staff and more structure.. I don't think we will be back soon, but I hope that the experience will be better when we do go back. read more

They taste great, but are small for $5. Drinks: 3 stars. Good drinks but not worth the price. In all, there are a lot of good places I'd rather go in the area that are more affordable and I can have a similar experience. The first time we went, service was great. Super friendly, and great drinks. They are mostly a patio area, which is great and they enclose it for the winter. They have TVs, which we took advantage of, to watch the Ms. Universe pageant. The service was great, and they serve tacos front their food truck. They are not the best, though (too expensive, greasy, and salty). The Moscow mules were great, though! The second time, our friends went. They also loved it, until they went to the restroom and it was torn up, and stuff all over the floor of the ladies room. Then, the bartender, instead of cutting them off, they started only pouring ginger beer in the cups for their Moscow Mules. They left the bar totally sober, and charged $9.00 for straight ginger beer. Came out here with some coworkers and was pleasantly surprised to see the they have the main lot AND a back lot for parking across Yale. There were lots of signs about not leaving valuables in your cars so I wonder if lots of crime tends to happen?? I know it boils down to big city problems, but that part of the heights seemed pretty reasonable. Anyway, once you make it inside the drink menu is quite expansive and there is plenty of patio seating available. The taco menu leaves more to be desired, but they were decent and I imagine they taste better with the increase in beverage purchases. Service was a little hard to flag down, our table was pretty much on the verge of sending smoke signals to the staff, but we managed to flag them down when they had to bring a beer or cocktail to someone else in the table. Otherwise, walking up to the bar might be your best choice. I would definitely come back for the atmosphere. Seems like a great place to spend a spring, summer, or fall evening with friends. read more

We finally made it in here and we're glad we did. They have craft beers which start at $4 (I think) and cocktails which can go for $11; With that said, if you're looking for a place where you can get spruced up and take a date, this would be a good option for drinks. Or, if you just wanna chill with friends and sip beers, it's good as well. Happy Hour is 2p-6p M-F and is all-day Wednesday. They have various $3 beers during this time, but the big selling point for me is they have $5 Old Fashioneds during HH. I'd rather wait until after happy hour ends to get their Live Oak Hefeweizen when it's $4 instead of $3, and focus on the cocktails. Hip place with great vibe. Drinks clearly is the focus. We enjoyed the wide variety of spirits and creative cocktail. Service was stuffy and slow (I had to bus our table of 8 myself as empty drinks and plates were piling up). Chips and guac was fresh and good. Tacos were a mixed bag with shrimp being a hit among the group, while the beef were a near joke as the meat was all fat and gristle in most.
